Field trip to a biogas plant
A field trip to an organic farm at Aroor was organized for the B Sc Microbiology students by the
Department of Microbiology on 8th September 2016. The students were accompanied by Ms. Shainy N K, Ms.
Asha B and Ms. Farha Baramy, Faculties, Department of Microbiology and Ms. Abitha V, Lab assistant,
Department of Microbiology. The farm was owned by Mr Ilyas, a ‘Karshakashri’ award winning farmer, who
strictly employs organic farming methods in his field. The farm comprised of a vermi-composting plant, a
biogas plant, a cattle and bird farm, cultivation of varieties of crops and trees. A large part of his property was
turned in to a natural forest with a rare collection of medicinal trees. The farm was completely free of plastic
wastes.
Mr. Ilyas was kind enough to give fruits and vegetables to the students. He also gave some samples of
plants from his collection and he also taught the students how to plant them and gave a detailed description
about the plants.
Mr. Ilyas explained about the vermi-composting plant were all the organic materials from his house,
agricultural land and cow dung from his cattle farm were dumped into a well cemented pit and the
earthworms from the previous batches are collected and again added to the new batch. He explained us the
process of vermi-composting and how he recollects the earthworm after the whole process.

He has a biogas plant in his backyard. For it he uses the cow dung from his cattle farm and the kitchen
and agricultural waste products. The fuel produced is used for all domestic purposes. The whole experience
was great and the students learned a lot of things from him.

World Science day celebration, 2016
Celebrated on every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the
important role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific
issues. It also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. By linking science more
closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept
informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our
understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.
The department of Microbiology organized ‘World Science Day’ celebration on November 10th 2016.
The day was celebrated with different interdepartmental competitions including Seminar presentations,
Science quiz, Collage making and Collage exhibition. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. A A M
Kunhi, Principal and Research Director, SIAS.
Students from all the departments actively participated in the programmes. Topics for seminar
presentation was selected by the students itself which covered almost all the areas of science. The first prize
was given for students from M Sc Food Technology, who presented the science behind our dreams in a very
interesting way. The science quiz was the event with more number of participants from both science and arts
departments. The first place was secured by B Sc Food Technology students. Collage making was another
event with topic, ‘Bio conservation’. First place was secured by B Sc Microbiology students.
