Clubs, competitions, laboratories enable students to participate in a variety of research activitiesStudents in UB’s mechanical and aerospace engineering program have recently been recognized for excellence in their research endeavors.

• Nagavenkat Adurthi won the 2014 Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award from the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS).

• Sourobh Ghosh received the 2013 National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship award; Michael Mercurio and John Mcgreevy received Honorable Mention.

• Javed Sovizi won the Best Student Robotics Paper Award at the 2013 ASME Dynamic Systems and Control Conference, held at Stanford University.

• The undergraduate Design/Build/Fly team placed in the top third at the AIAA/Cessna/Raytheon Missile Systems international student competition.

In the Spotlight: Laboratory for Autonomous and Intelligent Robotics Systems (LAIRS) & Aerospace Robotics Laboratory (ARL)

LAIRS and ARL represent the hub of autonomous aerospace systems research at UB. The labs operate one medium and two small unmanned aerial vehicles, and two helicopters (Align T-Rex and a Bergen RC Twin Observer). In addition, several quadrotors are avail-able that cater to a variety of photogrammetry, automated terrain navigation, landing and guidance, target tracking, and reconnaissance missions.

Research grants from AFOSR, AFRL, NASA, NGA, NAF and ONR as well as UB’s academic intramural programs such as the Center for Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (CURCA), Zimmer Award Program, Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) and NASA Space Scholar program support research for students at all levels.
