REPORT ON ALL ACTIVITIES (2012-2018)

ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-2018

The activities of the Chemistry association for the year 2017-18 were inaugurated by our

principal Rev. Fr. A. Britto, S.J., on 17th

July 2017. Miss R. DivyaReshmini, Cethar Vessels Ltd.,

Trichy, one of the illustrious alumni was the chief guest for the inaugural function. She delivered

a talk on “Applications of Chemistry in industries”

On 27th

August 2018, the department organized a State level quiz competitions

(CUBANyesE-18) separately for school and college students of tamilnadu. Students from 63

schools and 7 colleges participated. Mr. S. MuthuKumaran, Director, SIOL quiz club served as

the quiz master.

An intercollegiate competition (SYMPHORIA-18) was organized on 24th

January 2018.

Students from 12 neighboring colleges took part in the event. SadakathullahAppacollege,

Palayamkottai bagged the overall rolling trophy.

An educational tour was arranged for the final year UG and PG students on 16-18th

February 2018. 42 students of our department went for an industrial visit to Sea Blue Shipyard

Limited, Kerala and Kerala minerals & metals Ltd Kollam on 20th

and 21st February 2018.

An intradepartmental competition was arranged for the chemistry students on 27th

February 2018. All the students of both shift I and shift II were participated and benefited.

The department has successfully conducted a one day national seminar on advances in

materials science on 5th

march 2018 for which Dr. R. Edwin Raj, Professor, Department of

Mechanical engineering, St. Xavier’s Catholic college of Engineering, Nagercoil, Dr. Bibin

John, Scientist, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO, Trivandrum, Dr. SreejaKumari, Scientist,

NIIST, Trivandrum and Dr. S. Ginil Mon, Assistant professor, Nesamony Memorial Christian

College, Marthandam were the resource persons.

The valedictory function was held on 13th

March 2018. Mr. Siva Balan, TTE, Sothern

Railways was the resource person.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017

The Department of Chemistry has started the association activities with a lecture by

Dr. Kavitha, Scientist of CMTI, Bangalore.

A state level quiz for school students and College students was also conducted.

Special lectures by scientists from reputed institutions were also arranged. The scientists

visited the department were Dr. Ramakrishanan from Germany and Dr. Michael William Xavier

from thermal Power Plant, Bangalore.

Symporia academic festival was celebrated on 20th

September 2016 in which hundred

and twenty students from twenty colleges participated.

For the conservation of environment the department has taken initiative to move towards

microscale experiments. A two day workshop on Microscale experiments was conducted for

staff in which staff members from neighbouring colleges participated.

On 23rd

and 24th

of February 2017, a National Conference on Recent Trends in Materials

Chemistry was arranged for which the resource person were Dr.T.P.DRajan, Dr.VenuGopal, and

Dr.JobinCyraic from CSIR labs and IITs.

The Valedictory function was held on 6th

March 2017, Dr. Arul Vijaya Kumar,

Cardiologist, Tirunelveil was the resource person.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-2016

The inauguration activities of Chemistry association was arranged on 07.07.2015, and Dr.

Lionalraj, Chief surgeon and visiting professor of ophthalmology spoke on chemistry of vision.

Part of star college activities our I BSc chemistry students have visited organic farming,

Vasuthevanallur as industrial visit. Our department staff Dr. V. Jeyabal and Mr. M.S.

Selvakumar conducted training on Preparation and analysis of solutions for the I B Sc Botany

and I B Sc Botany Zoology students.

Part of Star college programme our department staff visited Jawarhalal Nehru Tropical

Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Pachapalodu, Thiruvananthapuram. We visited

phytochemistry lab and had an exposure on new analytical tools.

State level quiz programme was conducted in collaboration with SIOL academy on

03.09.15. Quiz programs in four levels were conducted for colleges and schools. Rolling

trophies were provided for college level championship and another school level championship.

An Invited lecture was arranged on 7.09.2015, Dr P. Ragupathy, Senior Scientist,

CECRI, Karaikudi gave a lecture on Construction and Challenges in Lithium battery synthesis.

Part of star college training programme Prof. Dr. G. Gnanakumar, Madurai Kamaraj

University, Madurai gave two days training & demo in biofuel cells and its application microbial

fuel cells and electrochemical sensors for students and staff respectively.

International conference on material science research and its applications was organized

on 16.12.2015. One hundred and seventy participants attended and sixty presented papers. Four

delegates from Malaysia and Arab universities Prof.Farook Adam, UniversitiSainsMalaysiya,

Penang, Malaysiya; Dr.P. Saravanan, University of Malyasiya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia;

Prof. VengadeshPeriasamy, University of Malyasiya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Dr. Abdul

AzizKing Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia were the recourse

persons. The alumni of the chemistry department doing their research work in IIT’s were invited

to interact with the final year UG and PG students.

Symphoria cultural competitions for UG students and invited talks by two scientists from

NASA for P.G students were organized. More than eighy students and staff from

neighbouringcolleges participated and students from AnnaiVelankanni College, Tholaiavattam

won the overall championship.

An industrial visit to zirconium complex, a part of Atomic Energy Department was

arranged for theI year UG student on 12.02.2016.

In this academic year three scholars, namely Mr. C. Joel, Mrs. R. Biju Bennie and Mr. S.

Daniel Abraham successfully defended their Ph.D thesis and were awarded the Ph.D degree

through the Chemistry Research Centre.

The chemistry association valediction was arranged on 4th

of March, 2016. Dr. B.

Xavier Innocent Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology delivered the valedictory

address and spoke on chemistry in life.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-2015

Dr. M. Baby Mariyatra is in-charge of Chemistry students association. Chemistry association

was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. K. Pitchumany, Director, Head of Organic Chemistry,

MaduraiKamaraj University on August 6, 2014. He delivered inaugural lecture on "Recent

Trends in Green Chemistry".

The department organized Several lectures and workshops as part of Diamond jubilee

Celebrations. Dr. R. Lakshminarayanan,India innovator awardee, Scientist, Hindustan Life care

Ltd., Trivandrum delivered a lecture on "Impact of Biomaterials on human health" on September

8, 2014.

Prof. Dr. P. Venuvanalingam, Emeritus Scientist, Bharathidasan University delivered

lecture on "Chemical Bonding: Facts and Myths".

Diamond Jubilee lecture series on Industrial Chemistry was conducted. Mr. D. James Balgan

Anand, Lab Chemist (Formerly worked) Saudi Aramco Project, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

discussed the marine research on petrochemical products.

Our illustrious alumni Dr. Vijay Solomon, USA gave a demo and training on Molecular

modeling and explored some chemwares in current research.

The Department organized One day national level symposium on "Recent trends in

Chemical Sciences" sponsored by Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (South India Section) on

December 12, 2014. Prof. P. Selvam, delivered the inaugural lecture on Nanomaterials and Its

applications. Professors from Madras University and Madurai Kamaraj University have also

delivered lectures on that day.

Symphoria 15 intercollegiate competitions on Chemistry topics were conducted on

December 16, 2014 Sri Parasakthicollege for women, Coutralam won the overall championship.

Department has also organized Three day lecture workshop on Emerging Trends in

Chemistry, on January 10, 2015 sponsored by National Science Academies. Professors from

Indian Technology and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore delivered lectures and interacted

with the participants from various colleges in southern districts of Tamilnadu.

Diamond Jubilee celebrations

On the eve of Diamond Jubilee celebration a state level intercollegiate and interschool quiz

(CUBANE) competitions were conducted. St. Patrick School, Pondicherry and Holy Cross

College, Nagercoil won the overall trophy.

The Diamond Jubillee of the Department was celebrated on January 24, 2015. The Chief Guest

was H. Sivaramakrishnan, Piramal Health Care Ltd. who is one of the eminent alumni of our

department.

Guest lecture on Electronic spectroscopy was delivered by Prof. Dr. Sivakolundhu, Madurai

Kamaraj University on February 21, 2015.

All the UG and PG students of our department visited Nuclear Power Plant, Kudankulam

and Zirconium Complex, Pazhayakayal.

The valediction of Chemistry Association was held on March 6, 2015. Dr. G. Rajaraman,

Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, Mumbai delivered the valedictory

address on "Molecular nanomagnets: Past, Present, future".

Two days training programme was arranged on 12.03.15 &13.03.15 for the I BSc

Chemistry students on Separation of bio compounds using Chromatographic technique. Dr. P.

Shanmugam, Senior Scientist, C. L. R. I Chennai discussed principles and varioustechniques

involved in Chromatography.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014

Chemistry Association was inaugurated on 29-07-2013. Rev. Sr. YesuThangam,

Provincial of Immaculate Congregation, Periyakulam gave an interesting talk on how chemicals

are very much associated with human life.

A short film was developed about the history of the Department and shown in the inaugural

function. Dr. S. Gnanpathy Subramanian, Principal Scientist, Process Development, Biocon

Limited, Bangalore, gave a talk on "Felkin-Anh model" to predict the stereoselectivity of

reactions of carbonyl compounds.

Dr. Vijay Solomon, University of Basel, Switzerland, addressed the final year students

and discussed the opportunities and fellowships available for the chemist in international

universities.

Dr. M. Sankar, Chancellor's Research Fellow, Cardiff University, United Kingdom,

spoke on current research in catalysis.

SYMPHORIA 2014, Department Festival, was celebrated on 13-12-2014. Nine colleges

participated and WCC, Nagercoil won the overall championship. Besides Quiz and paper

presentation were also conducted.

The diamond jubilee celebration was inaugurated on 25th January 2014. Nearly seventy

alumni participated, shared their memories and interacted with the present students. The

valediction of chemistry association was held on 27-02-14.

Dr. Subash, Professor, Govt Siddha College, Palayamkottai, delivered valedictory

address on the role of chemistry in Siddha Medicine.

Mr. Stanly John Xavier was the Staff-in-charge in this academic year.
