5. Specific Learning Objectives (SLO)

While planning for lessons all three main domains of learning are used to construct lessons. These

domains are

Cognitive (thinking),

Affective (emotion/feeling), and

Page 2: DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY · Immunology, Genetics, Scientific writing and communication To learn basics and fundamentals of subjects included in biotechnology TYBSc Large scale

Evaluative Report Biotechnology Department -2017 Page 2

Psychomotor (physical/kinaesthetic)

Cognitive thinking is based Anderson and Krathwohl – Bloom’s Taxonomy and emphasizes on

knowing, understanding, applying, analysing, evaluating, and the last and highest function,

creating.

Affective or feeling Domain inculcates attributes such as Receiving, Responding, Valuing,

Organization, and Characterization amongst the students.

The Psychomotor or Kinaesthetic Domain - As we learn more about how the brain learns and retain

information, the educators in department are realizing that targeted physical movement has the

potential to enhance memory and recall and can aid in accelerating long-term memory.

Intentionally adding movement to enhance learning is often called “embodied learning.” With the

aid of technology this field is growing rapidly.Special attention is given on non-discursive

communication

Workshop on High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC)

Workshop was organized between 28th& 29th November, 2014. Following are the objectives of

workshop

Objective:

o To make students and staff acquaints of the modern separation technique HPTLC.

o To help and further the usage of the instrument in the research being conducted in the institute.

With the rapid growth in the field of chemistry and biotechnology, separation of molecules form

the mixture or secondary metabolites from the plant extract always been a challenge. To

overcome this problem many of the new techniques have been developed and currently in use.

Being most basic and widely used separation technique, TLC has gained much more attention of

the scientific community. So over the period of time this basic technique of TLC has evolved in

to High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography. HPTLC is the most advanced from of TLC

and comprises the use of chromatographic layers of utmost separation efficiency and the

employment of state-of-the art instrumentation for all steps in the procedure: precise sample

Page 24: DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY · Immunology, Genetics, Scientific writing and communication To learn basics and fundamentals of subjects included in biotechnology TYBSc Large scale

application, standardized reproducible chromatogram development and software controlled

evaluation.

Future Strategy: It is possible to keep instrument running by offering service to the industry and

other organizations. And one person from the institute can be sent to the Anchrom, Mumbai for

the in-depth training, who can keep instrument functional single handedly. Overall it was a life

changing experience and it offered a great platform to interact and exchange ideas on HPTLC.
