Preface
The present Department of History was established in 1995 as Centre for History. Since then, It has been
offering Post Graduation, PhD and M.Phil programmes from 1995 and five year Integrated Masters from
2008. During the short span of Twenty three years, the Department has received the national professional
attention. The faculty of the department had made visible contribution as teachers, researchers and
supervisors. With good exposure to the national and international academic environment, faculty of the
department have been excelling teaching and in the field of their expertise. The department has been a place
intense intellectual activity. Established historians who were visited our department and directly and indirectly
have contributed to the growth of the department like, Dr. B. Sheik Ali, Dr. M.G.S. Narayanan, Dr. R.
Champakalakshmi, Dr. Y. Subbarayalu, Dr. Rajan Gurukkal, Mr. Ramachandra Guha, Dr.Sabyasachi
Bhattacharya, Dr. M.S.S.Pandiyan, Dr. A. R. Venkatachalapathy, Dr. Surendra Rao, Dr. Shiren Moosvi,
Dr.Ishrat Alam and Dr.John Bosco Lourdusamy.
Professor N. Rajendran, Former Professor & Head had made an immense contribution to the department. He
served as a member of ICHR, New Delhi (2008-2014). Presently he is the Vice-Chancellor of Alagappa
University, Karaikudi Tamil Nadu. In 2008, Dr. T. Asokan (PhD, Bharathidasan University) and
Dr. Y. Srinivasa Rao (PhD, IIT Madras) joined the department. Dr. Y. Srinivasa Rao is a member of Society
for the History of Technology.
Since its inception, the department has been conducting various academic programmes such as 41 seminars, 7
workshops, 2 training programmes on human rights, 10 Refresher Courses, 1 Symposium, 7 Endowment
Lectures and 31 lectures on Jawaharlal Nehru as the Centre for Nehru Studies (CNS) has been with the
department since the inception of the center. It also hosted conferences of state level history associations. The
department has produced 28 PhDs. Scholars have been doing well as teachers and as researchers.
The Department of History has been regularly publishing at international, national level. Few books and
nearly 50 articles are published so far. Prof. N. Rajendran‟s book on “National Movement in Tamil Nadu was
published by OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS. His other book Nationalism and Swadeshism in Tamil Nadu,
(Tamil) has been given the best book award by Collector Tiruchirappalli. He published another book
Historiography (Tamil), His monograph Shifting Paradigms of Nationalism, Ethnicity and Language in Tamil
Nadu and edited a book entitled Sources: Construction and Reconstruction of History, has been published by
the ICHR. He Published more than 45 articles such as: “Uprising in the South (1857)” which was published
as a part of the cover story in the Front line on 29th June 2007 issue and in Rethinking 1857 “The Revolt of
1857: Rebellions Prelude and Nationalist Response in Tamil Nadu”, edited by Sabyasachi Bhattacharya,
Chairman, ICHR, and published by the Orient Longman; Moreover, Prof. N. Rajendran has served as the
editor of Tamil Nadu History Congress from 2002 to 2007. Who served as the honorary consultant for the
District Gazetteer Project of the Tamil Nadu State Archives, He has served as the Chairman for Tamil Nadu
Plus Two History text Book, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Department has also completed 1 major 5 UGC
Minor Research Projects. Dr. T. Asokan has published 2 Books and 13 Articles. Dr. Y. Srinivasa Rao
published entitles as „Electricity, Politics and Regional Economic Imbalance in Madras Presidency, 1900-
1947‟ in Economic and Political Weekly „Colonialism and the Development of Electricity: The Case of
Madras Presidency, 1900-1947’ Science, Technology & Society, along with Dr. John Lourdusamy,
‘Electrification of Madras Presidency, 1900-1947‟, Review of Development and Change, and „Separation of
Child from Mother: Exclusion of Poor from Environment‟, edited book Trends in Sociology: Development,

Education and Diaspora. He also writes popular articles on contemporary issues in web portals such as
counter currents and roundtable India. Faculty of the department have also delivering lectures as resources
persons in academic programmes. Dr. Srinivasa has delivered 77 such lectures and visited United States and
United Kingdom to participate in the international academic gatherings. Dr. Asokan has delivered 64 and did
Live Phone in Programme on “How to Conquer the Disability to Excel in One‟s life” and on “Maruthu
Brothers” in All India Radio, Tiruchirappalli.

• Guide and train students in historical objectivity and historiographical skills
• Through focused historical research, create a database for policy making in social, economic
and cultural spheres.
• Imparting values such as egalitarianism, secularism, respect for pluralism, the idea of
nationhood.
• Train students in Heritage Management.
Vision and Mission
To mould future citizens who could appreciate the rich heritage and culture of our society and
provide a platform for secular, harmonious society inculcating ethical and human values with
a sense commitment to the society and nation.
Transform the Department of History in stages to a pioneering School of Historical Studies
in South India with emphasis on Research and Teaching.
By providing history based professional skills prepare students for careers in education, law,
international affairs, Art and Culture, social service, journalism, and government.

Program objectives
The objectives of M.A History programme are:
Guide and train students in historical objectivity and historiographical skills
Through focused historical research create a database for policy making in social, economic and
cultural spheres.
Imparting values such as egalitarianism, secularism, respect for pluralism, the idea of nationhood.
Train students in Heritage Management.
Five-Year Integrated Master o f Arts in His tory
Students of all streams, who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Board
of Secondary Education of Tamil Nadu or CBSE or an examination equivalent there of and who have
obtained not less than 50% marks in all subjects, shall be eligible for enrollment for the M.A. History
(5 years Integrated Program).
M.A. Regular
Eligibility: U.G. in any discipline
Duration: 2 years
M.Phil . (Ful l -Time)
Eligibility: P.G. in History with 55% of marks
Duration: 2 semesters
Value Added Course Open to all the Departments.
Selection Procedure There will be an Entrance Test (two hours duration) to test the candidates‟ Aptitude, Writing Skill and General
Knowledge. The selection will be based on the performance in the Entrance Test and the marks scored in Hr.
Sec. Exam and UG Marks.
After preparing the merit list, selection will be made applying the communal reservation of the Government of
Tamil Nadu.
