DAY 1: SATURDAY 4 MARCH AUCKLAND - SINGAPORE - HANOI Today we meet at Auckland airport for the start of our journey.

DAY 2 - SUNDAY 5 MARCH ARRIVE HANOI

Welcome to Hanoi. Vietnam’s capital is an attractive, laid back city with charming French-Colonial style buildings, spacious boulevards and cheerful, bustling markets. Upon arrival in Hanoi you will be transferred to your hotel where you will be met by our local Cosmos representative.

DAY 3 – MONDAY 6 MARCH HANOI Enjoy a full day of sightseeing taking in the TEMPLE OF LITERATURE, a peaceful series of walled courtyards and ONE PILLAR PAGODA designed to resemble a lotus blossom, a Buddhist symbol of purity. Later see HO CHI MINH’S STILT HOUSE, Hoan Kiem Lake, the HISTORY MUSEUM and the fascinating network of alleyways and shop houses which make up the Old Quarter. (B,L,D)

DAY 4 – TUESDAY 7 MARCH HANOI Journey through the tranquil countryside to CHUA THAY PAGODA, home to an ancient stage where it is believed the first water puppet show was performed before heading to one of Vietnam’s first pagodas TAY PHUONG. Upon arrival back in Hanoi view A WATER PUPPET SHOW.(B,L)

DAY 5 – WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH HANOI-HALONG BAY Drive to Halong Bay, one of Vietnam’s favourite destinations, and board your CRUISE BOAT for a leisurely journey through the dramatic limestone islands of the bay. Lunch is served while you cruise past islets, caves, beaches and floating villages. This afternoon you may wish to enjoy sunset on the top of Titov Mountain or take a bamboo row boat to discover a water tunnel, scenic lagoon and coral reef. Anchor in a secluded lagoon overnight. DAY 6 – THURSDAY 9 MARCH HALONG BAY-HANOI-DANANG-HOI AN

Before breakfast, you may have an opportunity to view sunrise over the bay. Continue cruising through Halong Bay to Bai Tho Mountain in the beautiful Bai Tu Long Bay before returning to the dock for disembarkation. Later, fly to Danang and travel to the vibrant yet traditional town of Hoi An. (B,L,D)

DAY 7 – FRIDAY 10 MARCH HOI AN Start today with a cruise on the THU BON RIVER, passing unspoiled countryside on the way to a pottery village and a wood carving village. Return to Hoi An to explore the town on a leisurely walking tour taking in sights such as the JAPANESE COVERED BRIDGE, a family chapel and the SA HUYNH MUSEUM with its early Hoi An history. (B,L,D)

DAY 8 – SATURDAY 11 MARCH HOI AN Today is free to further explore the quaint streets of Hoi An. Perhaps take a cooking class, visit a spa, or simply stroll the shops and galleries of this unique little town. (B)

DAY 9 – SUNDAY 12 MARCH HOI AN-DANANG-HUE Journey back to Danang and visit the CHAM MUSEUM. Continue through the spectacular Hai Van Pass (weather permitting) to the imperial walled city of Hue. Here your sightseeing tour takes in THE FORBIDDEN PURPLE CITY, THAI HOA PALACE, the HALLS OF THE MANDARINS and THE NINE DYNASTIC URNS. (B,L,D)

DAY 10 – MONDAY 13 MARCH HUE-HO CHI MINH Begin today with a boat trip on the Perfume River to the pretty THIEN MU PAGODA, made up of seven tiers. Continue up the river to the IMPERIAL TOMB OF MINH MANG, a majestic complex of courtyards, pavilions and temples in a beautiful setting. Later, fly to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam’s largest and most vibrant city, packed with timeless traditions. (B,L)

DAY 11 – TUESDAY 14 MARCH HO CHI MINH Today’s sightseeing tour takes in DONG KHOI STREET, the main shopping thoroughfare, the NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL and the Central Post Office. Afterwards enjoy a special Vietnamese cooking class. (B,L)

DAY 12 – WEDNESDAY 15 MARCH HO CHI MINH AND CU CHI TUNNELS Today, visit CU CHI, an important base during the Vietnamese War due to its strategic location. Learn about the impressive 200km tunnel network constructed by the Viet Cong to connect command posts, hospitals, shelters and weapon factories. The more adventurous may explore the deeper, and much narrower tunnels. This afternoon and evening enjoy free time to explore bustling Ho Chi Minh city (B)

DAY 13 – THURSDAY 16 MARCH HO CHI MINH CITY (EMBARKATION) This morning, transfer to the port on the Saigon River and board your Avalon Waterways river cruise vessel to start your deluxe CRUISE up the Mekong River through Vietnam and Cambodia. Get acquainted with the ship and relax before your welcome reception this evening. (B,L,D)

DAY 14 – FRIDAY 17 MARCH CRUISING: CAI BE-SA DEC This morning, board a sampan for a scenic cruise through Cai Be Harbor, passing the city’s beautiful French Gothic cathedral. First stop is a local establishment to see how rice paper, rice wine, and traditional candies are made. Then, take a walk through town to visit the beautiful CATHEDRAL. After lunch on the ship, reboard sampans and enjoy scenes of daily life along the river near Sa Dec. Stop at a BRICK FACTORY to see workers forming the clay bricks that fill the local landscape. Here, you will also learn about the importance of the rice husk in fueling the brick kilns. Next, visit the ancient HOUSE OF MR. HUYNH THUYLE, the lover of French novelist Marguerite Duras and inspiration for the film L’Amant (The Lover), directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. Afterward, walk through the LOCAL MARKET and absorb the atmosphere as locals are busy buying and selling fish, meat, and produce. (B,L,D)

DAY 15 – SATURDAY 18 MARCH CRUISING: CHAU DOC, VIETNAM-CAMBODIAN BORDER CROSSING Board a sampan for sightseeing around Chau Doc. Along the way you will see scenes of local life, including traditional Vietnamese floating markets and villages. Learn about some of the different species of fish living in the Mekong at a LOCAL FISH FARM. Then, continue down the backwaters of the Mekong to the religious sites at the base of SAM MOUNTAIN. You will also stop to see a LOCAL MARKET where shop owners sell a variety of dried goods. Return to the ship for lunch and head for the Cambodian border. (B,L,D)

DAY 16 – SUNDAY 19 MARCH CRUISING: PHNOM PENH The capital city of Phnom Penh retains its French charm to this day. This morning, your sightseeing tour by private cyclo includes visits to the ROYAL PALACE with the spectacular SILVER PAGODA and the NATIONAL MUSEUM, featuring an outstanding display of Khmer artifacts. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to enjoy the city. Just before dinner, children from a local orphanage will put on a SHOW featuring local song and dance. (B,L,D)

DAY 17 – MONDAY 20 MARCH CRUISING: PHNOM PENH-PREK BANG KONG Sightseeing this morning provides a glimpse of the atrocities inflicted on the Cambodian people by the Khmer Rouge regime. Visit the TUOL SLENG GENOCIDE MUSEUM, a former high school that housed over 17,000 prisoners. Of this number, it is believed that fewer than 15 survived the torture and avoided being sent to the Killing Fields. You will also visit one of the KILLING FIELDS, where over 200,000 people were killed by the Khmer Rouge. After lunch, visit the village of PREK BANG KONG, where silk weaving is a well-preserved tradition. Spend time at one house for a SILK WEAVING DEMONSTRATION and to learn more about how silk is produced. (B,L,D)

DAY 18 – TUESDAY 21 MARCH CRUISING: WAT HANCHEY-ANGKOR BAN This morning, visit WAT HANCHEY, a temple dating back to the 8th century and the Chenla Empire. Located on a hilltop, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area and partake in a TRADITIONAL WATER BLESSING given by local monks. After lunch, enjoy a WALKING TOUR through the rural village of Angkor Ban. Here you will see traditional Khmer houses and visit a LOCAL SCHOOL. (B,L,D) NOTE: The climb to Wat Hanchey features a steep incline. If you feel you are unable to make the climb, you will be driven to the top by car.

DAY 19 – WEDNESDAY 22 MARCH CRUISING: PREK DAM-KONPONG LOUANG-KAMPONG TRALACH Today, dock at Prek Dam and transfer by motorcoach to the SILVERSMITH VILLAGE of Konpong Louang. Here you will see talented craftsmen use age-old techniques to turn pure silver into works of art. Continue on to Kampong Tralach for an OX CART RIDE past rice paddy fields and the beautiful Cambodian countryside. Along the way, stop to MEET A LOCAL FARMER and learn about his daily life. Return to the ship for lunch. This afternoon, cruise up the Tonle River to Tonle Sap (Great Lake). After the rainy season, this massive body of water can cover around 25,900 square kilometres (10,000 square miles) and is the perfect breeding ground for fish, which play a vital role in providing food for people living on the lake. (B,L,D) NOTE: During low water conditions, generally late December to June, we will not be able to cruise up the Tonle River to Tonle Sap. In these cases, we will fly from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and sightseeing will begin in the afternoon. No included sightseeing will be missed. Low water conditions vary from year to year so this will be evaluated on a cruise-by-cruise basis.

DAY 20 – THURSDAY 23 MARCH SIEM REAP (DISEMBARKATION) This morning arrive in Siem Reap and enjoy a full day at leisure to explore on your own. Perhaps pick up some gifts and souvenirs at the Old Market & enjoy a refreshing drink on Pub Street while taking in the fascinating culture, or relax by the resort pool. (B)

DAY 21 – FRIDAY 24 MARCH SIEM REAP This morning visit nearby Angkor, the ancient Khmer capital. Visit the splendid temple complex including Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and ANGKOR THOM, the former fortified Royal City built by King Jayavarman VII, which houses the Bayon and Baphuon temples, the Terrace of Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper King and Phimeanakas or the ‘Celestial Palace’. DAY 22 SATURDAY 25 MARCH SIEM REAP Visit the exquisite 10th century BANTEAY SREI TEMPLE and TA KEO, the first Angkorian monument built entirely of sandstone. Also visit TA PROHM, SRAS SRANG and PRASAT KRAVAN. (B,L,D)

DAY 23 - SUNDAY 26 MARCH SIEM REAP - SINGAPORE - AUCKLAND This morning we make our way to the airport for our journey home (B).

DAY 24 - MONDAY 27 MARCH AUCKLAND Our journey ends today on arrival into Auckland Airport.
