Oxide Gallery features two

artists this month, Jane

Ruestmann and Linka Behn.

The exhibit puts Ruestmann’s

work — with strong graphic and

surreal elements — with Behn’s

more interpretative work. The fea-

tured show includes mixed-media

paintings and collage. Ruest-

mann’s No. 12 (above) uses repeat-

ing circular patterns to bring the

eye to silhouetted birds. Small col-

ored squares could suggest a

number of ideas, from the literal

(breadcrumbs?) to the metaphori-

cal. Behn concentrates on figura-

tive images, as in Dark Flower

(left), which come into sharper

focus from a loosely painted field

of color. Oxide Gallery is located at

Columbus, Ohio, artist RJD2 writes about his 10-year

journey from making “little beats in my bedroom

for release on an independent record label.” He’s

still doing it. “OK,” he says, “to be fair, some things have

changed — a bigger studio, I own the studio, I own the

independent label, and instead of driving 10 blocks to a gig

in my hometown, I fly 10 hours to a gig in another coun-

try.” RJD2 released the album The Colossus last year. And

after a decade, the musician says his goal is unchanged:

“to make a piece of music that is going to hopefully

rearrange your brain.” Let your brain decide for itself when

Forgive me. I might be theonly person in NorthTexas who didn’t watch

the Super Bowl. I know, Iheard. That wasn’t the gameto miss. It wasn’t just good, itwas great.

To be honest, I’m only so-sointerested in professional foot-ball, unless it’s the DallasCowboys. I figure Jerry Jonescould use one more persontelling him how to run histeam, and Tony Romo wantsto feel the love, especially sinceJessica is out of the picture.Otherwise, I root for the teamwith the finest uniforms.

Since the Cowboys didn’tmake it to the Super Bowl, Iprayed for New Orleans. Ineeded the Saints to win.Moreover, I needed a goodexcuse to write about frog legsand alligators. Some of you areprobably thinking I should’vecheered for the Colts.

Usually when I think Cajun,my mouth waters for disheswith andouille sausage, bowlsof red jambalaya and shrimpgumbo, and plates piled highwith blackened catfish orcrawfish etouffee, with dirtyrice and jalapeno corn bread.You can get all those good eatsat both Frilly’s, too. I was on amission for frog legs and alli-gator, however — which,despite their popularity in theSouth, haven’t quite made itto America’s Top 10 of favoritefoods.

I ordered mine fried fromFrilly’s Seafood Bayou Kitchen,with a side of red beans andrice. They came with seafoodcocktail sauce and tartar saucefor dipping. I started with thealligator, which, covered inbatter, looked a lot like pop-corn shrimp. It even had a bitof a chewy, shrimp-like texturebut more closely resembledcooked turkey breast.

The frog legs were surpris-ingly meaty, despite their tinydrumstick size. I expectedthem to taste like chicken, butthey definitely didn’t. Insteadthey tasted like — well — froglegs. They were very fresh andsomewhat gamey, more fla-vorful than the alligator.

I can’t say I’m a big fan, but

I’m happy for the Saints. By allaccounts, they played well anddeserved to beat the Colts. Buteven if they had lost, there’s noway I would’ve tried horsemeat.

will host Thin Line Film

Fest, an international doc-

umentary festival that runs Feb. 17-

21. During the five-day event, 46

films will be screened — with an

even split between features and

shorts. Moviegoers will have the

opportunity to go to numerousworld, Southwest and Texas pre-mieres and view 13 internationalfilms representing nine countries.In addition, 25 filmmakers fromas far away as New York City andJapan will attend screenings of their works.

The festival opens Wednesdaywith the critically acclaimedGasLand, followed by five documen-taries from the 2009 Oscar shortlist:Beaches of Agnes, the autographicalfilm written and directed by longtimefilmmaker Agnes Varda; GarbageDreams, which follows two Egyptianmen who work and live in a Cairo slumcalled Garbage City; The MostDangerous Man in America, aboutDaniel Ellsberg and the PentagonPapers; The Cove, which follows agroup of animal rights activists as theyuncover a terrible secret; and BurmaVJ, which has won awards all over theglobe for its look at the unrest inBurma.

tage clothing store in Austin. The

film’s focus is mostly on how com-

munication, or lack thereof, affects

our daily lives. Bujalski isn’t con-

cerned with much in the way of plot-

ting, but his naturalistic style carries

a modest charm, and the characters

and performances convey genuine

intimacy. Not rated, 100 minutes. At

Crazy Heart (��) Jeff Bridges

offers a stunning performance in an

otherwise contrived character study

about the redemption of a washed-up

country music star addicted to booze

and women, and who finds himself

alone and bankrupt — both financial-

ly and creatively. Things improve

when he meets a journalist (Maggie

Gyllenhaal) with a young son, but his

vices get in the way. While the story

takes a familiar arc, Bridges and a

cool soundtrack make it worthwhile.

Creation (��) Muddled but

intriguing biopic about Charles Dar-

win, the 19th century scientist best

known for his theory of evolution. It

tracks Darwin’s (Paul Bettany) family

life that includes his God-fearing wife

(Jennifer Connelly) and the death of

one of his daughters. That, along

with Darwin’s psychologically crip-

pling conflict of faith, contributes to

his descent into madness. The film’s

perspective is heavy-handed and its

presentation is stuffy, yet Bettany’s

portrayal is fascinating and the film

does offer provocative insight into its

subject. Rated PG-13, 108 minutes. At

The Last Station (��1/2) Despite

several Oscar nominations, this

period piece directed by Michael

Hoffman never offers anything grip-

ping. Christopher Plummer plays

Leo Tolstoy, who nears his last days,

while a feud brews about his

a questionable visionary (Paul

Giamatti) pleads for the common

man. James McAvoy is the eager

acolyte caught in the middle.

Like many of the sugary con-fections prevalent this week,Valentine’s Day may not bewhat you wanted for theallegedly romantic day, but it isjust about what you wouldexpect.

Take the sappy Love,Actually and trade itsChristmastime trappings andits London setting forValentine’s Day in Los Angeles,and the result is this superfi-cially complex yet ultimatelypredictable romantic comedy.Not surprisingly, superficialand predictable are wordsclosely linked to director GarryMarshall, the one-time televi-sion maven who graduated toturning out assembly-line

movie schlock (Dear God, Exitto Eden).

Here, Marshall followsKatherine Fugate’s simplisticscript involving a series ofromances, near-romances, fatalromances, and various otherromantic and comedic diver-sions. They play out with a fre-quently changing structurethat simply calls attention tothe film’s artificiality. In addi-tion, many of the scenes look

rushed and sloppy, as if theywere first takes that Marshallwas too hasty to polish.

Any allure provided byValentine’s Day comes from thestar-studded cast who drop inand out of roles that neverseem to fit. One aged couple,Shirley MacLaine and HectorElizondo, seems ludicrouslymismatched, as does an ill-timed confession of a long-agoinfidelity.

Ashton Kutcher tests hislikeability in his role as a floristwhose girlfriend (Jessica Alba)turns down his Valentine’s Daymarriage proposal, which thenpropels him to realize thatmaybe his one true love is hislifelong best friend (JenniferGarner).

Marshall juggles these narra-

tives — along with others — yetnever seems comfortable ornatural with any of the mis-matched couples. He randomlyinjects his customary use ofpratfalls, clumsy physical com-edy and broad humor.

However mismatched, thecompetent cast (including JuliaRoberts, George Lopez,Bradley Cooper, Taylor Swiftand Patrick Dempsey), pro-vides occasional moments ofmirth. And running at morethan two hours, a few laughscan be mined from the saccha-rin-laced detritus.

But don’t look for muchmore than a laugh or two.
