Quality Improvement Initiative

The program standards and guides materials, which form the basis for instruction in Georgia’s technical colleges, are developed to support industry driven needs. Faculty and local program advisory committees review programs, each year, to ensure the latest technology and employment needs are addressed for the program.

Through the Instructional Faculty Consortium Committee (IFCC) process, programs are reviewed and, if needed, recommendations are made to update competencies found in the program. Given the accelerating changes in technology and the workplace, a major systematic updating of all standardized programs in the technical colleges, with business and industry involvements, is needed.

A joint IFCC Executive Board and State Technical Committee (STC) meeting was held in March 9, 2007 to examine the Dental Hygiene , degree , program. A working committee composed of instructors and state technical committee members met in March 30, 2007 to discuss and respond to recommendations made by the IFCC Executive Board and STC members.

Currently, the Probe process is being initiated for program revisions recommended by the State Technical Committee . The following sections are included in this Probe document:

a listing of the IFCC Executive Board a listing of the State Technical Committee members a list of the Working Committee members and recommendations made by the IFCC Executive Board and STC

The recommended changes/revisions made in this document apply to the Dental Hygiene , degree program(s). The deleted items are reflected with a strikethrough while new material is boldfaced. Course number and course title changes are recommended to more accurately describe the course level and content of the affected courses and enhance transferability.

The appropriate sections from the program standards are included, showing recommended revisions, and a revised curriculum sequence illustrates the impact of revisions on scheduling.

State Technical Committee Recommendations

The State Technical Committee made the following 20 recommendations that were approved by the Dental Hygiene IFCC.

1. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that the content of AHS 104 is more geared to basic knowledge of all health professions. Course content should de-emphasize common skill sets and increase awareness of the interdependence of other health professions.

Rationale:It is desirable for AHS 104 to include basic knowledge that pertains to all health professions.

2. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that a separate course be developed (Introduction to Dental Hygiene) -1 credit hour (3 clinic hours) to address specific topics and procedures needed prior to DHY 104/105-Preclinic Lecture and Lab.

Rationale:This new course will enable the programs to more efficiently address the additional clinical skills needed on the new ADHLEX clinical exam. It will include a redistribution of the competencies in the courses DHY 104/105 (Preclinic Lecture and Lab) and DHY 110/111 Clinic I Lecture and Lab) allowing the students more time to practice instrumentation technique prior to patient care.

3. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that Psychology and Sociology be recommended as separate core courses for those students interested in Bachelors or higher degrees; however, students could elect to take a combined Psychology/Sociology course (Introduction to Behavioral Sciences) to fulfill the requirement should they choose to not further their education beyond the Associates degree level.

Rationale:

ProbeTemplate.081105.Dot Page 4 of 24

Page 5: Dental Hygiene, Degree

This option will give students the option of fewer required course hours to obtain their degree. This option would equate to a savings of 5 credit/ 3 semester credit hours. This can be a beneficial alternative for students relying on funding from the Hope Scholarship and Pell grant programs.

4. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that a minimum grade of 75 be required for all dental hygiene courses.

Rationale: This recommendation is based on the required minimum passing score of 75 on both the NationalBoard Dental Hygiene Examination and the ADHLEX clinical exam. Both examinations must besuccessfully completed with a passing grade in order for the graduate to obtain licensure fromthe Georgia Board of Dentistry. It is the general consensus of the working committee thatstudents must be able to pass the program coursework with a grade of 75 to properly preparethem to gain their licensure. All grades obtained in the program are still to be scored as per the DTAE grading scale, but the minimum score of 75 will be required to continue in the program.

5. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that DHY 112 (Biochemistry) be combined with DHY 212 (Nutrition) into one 3-hour course since curriculum content is similar. (New course number to be assigned by DTAE upon posting).

Rationale: The content of these two courses have been noted by students and faculty to contain an overlap of information. The combination of these two courses is an attempt to reduce redundancy and to minimize the total credit hours required for program completion.

6. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that one additional credit hour be added to DHY 108 (Radiology) to be reflected in lecture time for the course. This would increase the course from 3 to 4 credit hours.

Rationale: Increasing the course an additional hour will allow more time to gain knowledge in radiology theory and digital imaging. The faculty currently teaching this course agree that additional lecture time is already required to properly cover the material.

7. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that DHY 108 (Radiology) be taught in two separate quarters or in a sequence where radiology theory is taught first followed by radiographic technique. Two separate grades would be required for both radiology theory and technique to ensure competency in each segment. DTAE will assign two unique course numbers for the theory and technique courses in Radiology.

Rationale: Offering Radiology as two separate courses, where the lecture and lab components are divided, would allow dental assistants or those previously trained in dental radiography to test out (exempt) the technique course and would allow the educational process to be more seamless.

8. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that digital radiography be added as a specific competency listed in the Standard for DHY 108 (Radiology).

Rationale:Digital radiography has become commonplace in the private practice sector. Graduates must be well versed with the theory and practice of using digital radiography to meet the needs of the community. In addition to teaching the theory of digital radiography, the dental hygiene programs should budget for digital radiography equipment including computer support in the clinical and radiology areas.

9. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that the minimum age of 18 be required to enter the dental hygiene program. This change is to ensure that students entered in the program meet the minimum age requirements by law to operate radiography equipment.

Rationale:

ProbeTemplate.081105.Dot Page 5 of 24

Page 6: Dental Hygiene, Degree

Although the Georgia Board of Dentistry requires dental hygiene applicants to be 18 years of age to obtain licensure, the working committee could find no evidence prohibiting persons under the age of 18 from learning to use ionizing radiation. The dental hygiene programs agree that applicants to enter the dental hygiene program, who will be under the age of 18 at the time of graduation, must be advised of the fact that they will not be able to gain licensure until they attain the age of 18.

10. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that DTAE Standards state that dental hygiene graduates of Georgia DTAE schools receive an Associate of Applied Science degree instead of the Associate of Applied Technology degree. Mr. Petty indicated that this recommendation has already been approved.

Rationale: The type of degree has already been changed and needs to be reflected in the Standards.

11. The STC committee supports the current minimum quarter hours listed in DTAE Standards. The previous minimum quarter hours listed in the DTAE Standards for graduation from the Dental Hygiene Program was 123 quarter hours. With the changes requested the new minimum quarter hours will be 124 quarter hours.

Rationale:The Commission on Dental Accreditation mandates Standards that dictate course content that must be met within the dental hygiene programs. The specific Standards from CODA regarding course content are Standard 2-10, 2-11, 2-12, 2-13, 2-14, 2-15, and 2-16.

12. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that time management be added as a specific competency listed in the Standards for DHY 114 (Clinical Dental Hygiene IV Lab) and DHY 221 (Clinical Dental Hygiene V Lab).

Rationale:This competency is added to assist the student in developing time management skills allowing them a smoother transition into the private practice sector.

13. It was recommended by the State Technical Committee that specific competencies regarding pain control be added to the Standard for DHY 206 (Pharmacology and Pain Control).

Rationale:Although all the DTAE dental hygiene programs include pain control as part of the DHY 206 (Pharmacology) course, there was no specific competency covering pain control. This subject needs to be added as a competency.

14. The State Technical Committee engaged in discussion centered on whether an additional hour should be added to DHY 106 (Pharmacology). No recommendations were made at the time of the STC meeting. The Working Committee considered the issue and decided to request the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend changing the credit and contact hours for DHY 106 (Pharmacology) from 3 hours to 4 hours.

Rationale:Increasing the course an additional hour will allow the proper lecture time required to properly cover the subject material.

15. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend removing the competency “Impression and Study Cast Techniques” from DHY 110 / DHY 111 (Clinical Dental Hygiene I Lecture and Lab).

Rationale:The competency concerning “Impression and Study Cast Techniques” is taught to clinical competency during the demonstration lab for DHY 103 (Dental Materials). The rationale for removing it from DHY 110 / DHY 111 (Clinical Dental Hygiene I Lecture and Lab) is to reduce redundancy within the program.

ProbeTemplate.081105.Dot Page 6 of 24

Page 7: Dental Hygiene, Degree

16. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend adding the competency “Applied Techniques” to DHY 111 (Clinical Dental Hygiene I Lab), DHY 202 (Clinical Dental Hygiene II Lab), and DHY 209 (Clinical Dental Hygiene III Lab).

Rationale:This is apparently a typographical error from the earlier Standards since the competency “Applied Techniques” is listed as a specific competency for all other clinical laboratory sessions where live patient care is a component of the course.

17. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend correcting the D. Lab hours reflected for DHY 113 (Microbiology) from 3 hours to 2 hours.

Rationale:This is apparently a typographical error from the earlier Standards since the laboratory session for DHY 113 (Microbiology) is a demonstration lab instead of a participation lab.

18. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend removing the competency “Amalgam Polishing/Recontouring” from DHY 201/202 (Clinical Dental Hygiene II Lecture and Lab).

Rationale:Amalgam polishing and recontouring are considered to be dated procedures, and should no longer be required as a specific competency within the program.

19. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend removing the competency “PSR Index” from DHY 213/214 (Clinical Dental Hygiene III Lecture and Lab).

Rationale:Students need to be well versed in obtaining different types of indices, but there is no reason for there to be a specific competency using the PSR index.

20. The Working Committee requested the Dental Hygiene Program’s Advisory Boards to recommend adding the competency “Dietary Assessment” to DHY 213 (Clinical Dental Hygiene III Lecture).

Rationale:“Dietary Assessment” is an important component of dental hygiene education. It is already taught within the programs and it appears on the National Board examination. “Dietary Assessment” should be added as a specific competency.
