Density of Solids and Liquids
Key Question:How can you find the density
of a solid or liquid?
Properties of a Solid
• Density –ratio of mass to volume in a homogeneous mixture or substance
–gives information about the “compactness” of a material
–Formula: D= m/V
Does density depend on the size or shape of the material?
• Yes• Does density depend on the type of
the material?• Yes • How can density be used to identify a
material? • Use a Density Chart or compare to a
substance with a known density
What are some other properties of solids?
Other Properties of Solids
• Hardness –measure of a substance’s resistance to scratching
• Elasticity–measure of a solid’s ability to return to its original size when stretched
Other Properties of Solids
• Brittleness–measures how easily a material will shatter
• Malleability –measures a solid’s ability to be pounded into thin sheets
Other Properties Solids
• Tensile strength –Measure of how much pulling a material can withstand
How can you find the density of a solid?
• D = m/V
• What is the density of a rock that has a mass of 300 kg and a volume of 500 cm3
• 300kg / 500 cm3 =0.6 kg / cm3
How can you find the density of a liquid?
• Use the same formula:
• If a fish tank holds 50L of water and the density of the water is 1g/mL what is the mass of the water in the fish tank?
• 50L = 50,000 mL • 50,000 mL x 1 g/mL =
m = VD
50,000g
D = m/V
