DensityFor science… density is equal to the mass

of a thing divided by its volume.

D = m/vMass – amount of matter – measured in

grams (g) Volume – amount of space something

occupies – measured in cm3 or mL Mass = D(v) v = m/d

Volume

For regularly shaped objects-

l x w x h ~ (cm)x (cm)x (cm)=cm3

For irregularly shaped objects- use displacement (amount of water pushed aside equals the volume of the object)

Archimedes PrincipleArchimedes- Greek philosopherWas in his bath tub one morning – he

noticed that as his body went in to the water – the water rose out of the way. He realized that the volume of H2O that rose was equal to the volume of his body.

So… the volume of an object is equal to the volume of H2O it displaces!

1g H2O = 1mL H2O = 1 cm3 H2O

Buoyancy

-upward force that keeps things afloat. -in water: an object floats if its buoyancy is greater than its weight; sinks if its weight is greater than its buoyancy -the buoyant force on the solid object is equal to the weight of the water displaced

So why do things float?

What’s that glass bubble thing on your desk? It’s a Galileo

thermometer?Glass bubbles of

colored water with metal tags attached

Each tag has a slightly different mass

Practice timeIf an object has a density <1g/cm3,

what will it do if placed in water? If an object has a density >1g/cm3,

what will it do if placed in water? If an object has a density =1g/cm3,

what will it do if placed in water?
