Alan David Katz spent the
first seventy of his eighty-
five years of life in Chicago
before moving to Boulder,
Colorado in 1997. While a
successful Chicago trial
attorney for fifty years,
he was also a self-taught
collector. Fascinated by
minerals and lapidary, his collection began with jade
carvings, but then expanded to include Asian works of
art, art pottery, Southwestern jewelry, vintage watches,
Art Nouveau objects and photography of the American
West. A true Renaissance man, Mr. Katz also amassed a
personal research library to further educate himself on
his collecting interests. The American and European art
pottery offered in this sale represents only a fraction of
Mr. Katz’s diverse collection.
His introduction to travel and a world beyond Illinois
was initiated by his military assignment in Los Alamos,
New Mexico in 1945. His travels took flight to a wider
expanse such as Berlin before the destruction of the
Wall, to China just after its opening to westerners, and
to Japan, Russia, Egypt, Peru, Australia, New Zealand,
Thailand and Cambodia. The last trip that he took with
his beloved wife Myrette, who predeceased him, was to
Venice. Together they shared a passion for travel
and collecting.
Mr. Katz’s intelligence and literary adeptness became
his signature traits, and he was known for his mastery
of puns. Researching and acquiring works of art brought
him great pleasure, and he embraced life through this
confluence of curiosity, education and collecting. Leslie
Hindman Auctioneers is honored to offer this extensive
and distinctive collection.
