SAS MIDDLE TIER

SOFTWARE

• With the release of 9.4, SAS now directly provides most of the middle-tier

elements that our customers need to build robust applications as part of the

SAS Platform.

• Those middle-tier elements are, in many cases, third-party software products

which been re-branded as SAS solution components.

• SAS Remote Services is no longer deployed by default. Available if needed

for legacy support.

• Mid-Tier technology is no longer based on J2EE technology

• There’s a concerted focus on supporting:

• Replication

• Redundancy

• Virtualization

METADATA-BOUND

LIBRARIES

• Enforce metadata security

regardless of access

method

• Introduced in 9.3M2

• 9.4 SMC provides GUI to

• Create

12

LOCKDOWN

• LOCKDOWN is a SAS configuration option that:

• Restricts access from a server session to directories not explicitly identified

• Restrict Enterprise Guide users

• Restrict SAS/CONNECT users

• Automatically includes

• Required resources (e.g., WORK, SASHELP)

• Pre-assigned libraries

• Disables

• Certain PROCs (e.g., JAVAINFO, GROOVY)

• Certain functions (e.g., ADDR, PEEK, POKE)

• DATA step javaobj methods

14

SAS/SECURE

• Included with Base SAS

• Offers options to SASProprietary encryption

• Stronger at-rest encryption for SAS data

• SAS/SECURE must be explicitly installed

• Default is to not install it even though it is in the depot

STANDBY MODES

• Hot Standby

• Standby nodes are run simultaneously

• Data mirrored in real time

• Warm Standby

• Standby node run in the background

• Data mirrored at regular intervals

• Cold Standby

• Standby node is powered off until needed

• Data mirrored less frequently

• Software license implications

SAS METADATA

SERVER CLUSTER

• A Metadata Cluster allows multiple SAS Metadata

Server instances to work together as a single service.

• The primary goal of the Metadata Cluster is to improve

availability by eliminating a single point of failure. In

achieving that, scalability is improved as well.

• SAS Metadata Server can provide higher availability:

• The clustering functionality is now built directly into the

SAS Metadata Server software. No third-party

components or additional software licenses are required.

• 3 (or more) Metadata Server nodes must be deployed to

build a HA cluster

• If a node goes down, the others continue to service

requests

29

SAS MIDDLE TIER

CLUSTER

• The SAS Web Application Server is scalable:

• Vertical scalability = larger host machine

• All resources for a single SAS Web Application Server JVM, or

• Deploy multiple SAS Web Application Server JVMs with different responsibilities on

one host

• Horizontal scalability = additional host machines

• Deploy multiple instances of the same SAS Web Application Server JVM onto

different hosts

• Deploy multiple SAS Web Application Server JVMs with different responsibilities to

different hosts

WITHOUT THE SDW

• New in SAS 9.4, the ability to install EG and AMO without running the SDW

on each computer

• At initial release only these are the only 2 supported applications

• May be useful installing EG and AMO where there are SAS 9.3 client

applications installed
