Intuitive

With the Zentangle Method, anyone can create beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is easy to learn and easy to do. And even though it is a specified series of steps, it results in a creative expression that transcends its own rules.

Fun and Relaxing

Creating Zentangle art provides a fun and lighthearted way to relax and intentionally facilitate a shift in focus and perspective. The Zentangle Method of creating art is unencumbered by dogma and cost which can weigh on other approaches. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently structured and organized so you can enjoy and benefit from an activity that otherwise might be considered whimsical.

Unexpected Results

With the Zentangle Method, you do not have a preconceived idea of your final result. Following this somewhat unusual approach, your creation is not restricted by your expectations.

Please do not park in the visitor’s spaces in front of the church.

April President’s Message: What an incredible month it has been. We had a wonderful spring show at the Kimball gallery with prizes for some really outstanding work. There were 30 entries. I would like to say wow to that but con-sidering we have 200 members most of whom consider themselves artists, this is a low turnout. Our next show will be the July summer show connected with the Art Festival. This show gets more viewers than any other show we put on. You can enter it for a mere $15 and get your art out of the studio where people can see it. So I look forward to a much larger show in July. Start painting! Volunteerism is high in PAL with lots of you stepping up to the plate to help out. Our first meeting of the Open Show committee had 11 people all of whom volunteered to take on a small job to help out. Con-sequently the show prospectus is be up and running April 1...right on time. Kudos to those wonderful people! At the general meeting we had two people volunteer (Eileen Schurer and Pat Rush) to learn the work-ings of our projector and computer. So now we have 3-4 qualified people to do our set-up for the general meetings. Kudos to them for giving our wonderful Carlene a backup!

AND we have a volunteer to fill the position of First Vice President...Feather Hilgar! Enthusiasm, that's what runs a successful organi-zation. Thanks to all. More opportunities are coming up with the Festival. We always need lots of help. When the call goes out consider what you can do. If you can't be there personally do something behind the scenes. Send a snack, send $10 to buy a snack, use your imagination because we all know "many hands make light work!" Thanks for being a part of this great and creative organization!

Charli Live well, laugh often, love much!

CREATING DRAMATIC, DYNAMIC LANDSCAPES

This workshop will focus on the basics for creating dramatic, dynamic, timeless landscapes: value, composition and simplifying shapes into strong abstract design. Color relationships, edg-es, temperature of light will be discussed, as well as the application of value sketches and at-mospheric perspective for stronger statements in your paintings. Also to be discussed: creating a passionate approach to your subject matter, evoking a more interactive response with the viewer. Each day will have an instructor demonstration, as well as personal attention and cri-tique, focusing on developing individual style.

Welcome to Tacoma! Join us next summer in another fabulous west coast city, Tacoma, Washington, for the fourth in a series of annual west coast urban sketchers sketch crawl events. We have been in the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, and San Diego over the past three summers, and this coming summer we offer up Tacoma, the second largest urban area in the state of Washington. Tacoma offers an historically and architecturally rich downtown area that cries out for the sketcher/artist to pay it homage, and we are excited about sharing that opportunity with the global urbansketcher community.Because we offer no workshops or demonstrations, these annual west coast events are FREE. Each is designed for simply a few days of pure sketching in another of our fabulous west coast cities with others who share the same passions about sketching in urban environments. If you are coming from out of town, please find a listing of accommodations in the right margin, and there are maps embedded in the agenda below showing where each event will be held. Also check out the Tacoma Link Light Rail in the right margin to learn about how free and easy one can travel from one end of downtown to the other.

Agenda 1. Friday - August 19th. Our "Meet & Greet" will begin with our Registration at 6pm at Picasso's Catering (map) where they proclaim, "Food is Art." Dinner will be served at about 6:45 - 7pm. During the evening we will "break the ice" with timed, 5 min portrait sketches of each other, we will enjoy dinner together, and we will hold a raffle for art supplies - each attendee will receive a ticket at the door. Be sure you get your RSVP back to us by August 5th, and you will receive an extra ticket for a second raffle for a very special art-supply item. Our caterer is offering four dinner choices to serve various tastes (meat, fish, vegetarian, gluten free). Each dinner will cost approxi-mately $25, which includes the tip. There will be a no-host bar for wine, beer, cider, and mixed drinks. (Menu details forthcoming.) Once the menu items are fully detailed (late January), we will add that menu here. You may then indicate your dinner preference while you RSVP. For those who want to RSVP before late January, or who have already RSVP'd, we will send you a personal email for plac-ing your order with a simple reply. 2. Saturday - August 20th. The Sketch Crawl Marathon will begin at 9 am with an orientation in the Reception Area of the Auditorium of the Washington State Historical Museum (map). If you use the Museum's parking lot, you will receive all-day $3 parking coupons - details pending. Sketch-ing should begin about 9:15ish. The first of two Sharings of Sketches will take place at 11:30 am, along with the "Official Group Photo." Sketchers will be on their own for lunch. (Hint: join one of our volunteers for lunch and find out about great sketching spots you might otherwise miss.) The second Sharing of Sketches, and possible second group photo, will take place at 4pm back at the museum. 3. Sunday - August 21st. Meet up at the front door of the Tacoma Art Museum (map) at 9 am for announcements and a few more hours of sketching. The loca-tion for the final Sharing of Sketching and Final Group Photo will be announced at the 9am session. They will take place at the event's closing at noon.

RSVP

1. If you plan to attend (Friday, or Saturday, or Sunday only - OR All three days) please click theEvent Questionnaire link below and let us know your plans. PAL BOARD MEETING March 18, 2016 Minutes

President Charli Meacham called the meeting to order at 10:00.

Attendees: Virginia Wedington, Myrna Binion, Carlene Salazar, Cathie Johnson, Charli Meacham, Randy Robbins, Jeni Woock, Barb Ruble, Nancy Bartlett, Stevie Cardinal, Charlee Glock-Jackson

Treasurer’s Report: Checking account balance $2,350.67; Money Market account $47,499.10; total CD and Investment accounts $120,708.05. Total end of month balance $170,557.82.

A motion was passed to have the treasurer make an appointment and/or form a committee to explore recommendations for the management of the PAL investments.

TCC PAL Show: K.C. Bitterman of TCC will be at the PAL general meeting this month. PAL will be the only artists in the show dur-ing this period from April 4 – June 9. An artist reception will be held April 7 form 4-6. The theme is “Spring.” We need more commu-nication and publicity to get artists to hang here.

Open Show: Carlene reported the contract with the Harbor History Museum is not yet signed. April 2 is the date to get the prospec-tus out and online. She was asked to send a time line out.

Art Festival: Jeni reported the location for the food trucks and music at the Key Bank is doubtful this year. Other possible sites were discussed including 7 Seas which has already agreed to host this area of the festival. The applications are closed and were juried last week. There are some copywrite issues being addressed regarding the music during the festival. A thank you note is to be sent the the Milgards for their support. Aprons to identify volunteers at the Festival were displayed. These will have a Heron printed on them and will be kept from year to year. Any PAL member wishing one may purchase it if signed up for purchase before the event. An announcement will be made at the April meeting.

Member Show: Cathie reported the most recent show is now at the Kimball Gallery. There was a poor attendance this year. Art work has no time limit for creation but “should be representative of what the artist is currently doing.” Photos of the show will be posted online and sent to FaceBook and the newsletter editor.

Plein Aire: Anne sent word that she didn’t think there would be a show this year because of the exhibit at Harbor History Museum. Anne indicated she will be in charge but needs help with days for hosting. A discussion followed regarding hosting an Urban Sketchers show at Mallards Landing and/or possibly having a winter/spring show.

AV Training: Carlene will train anyone interested as a backup for the AV duties. A request will be made at the PAL General Meet-ing. All the equipment is in one box at the storage unit.

Workshops: Myrna said there are still openings in the Robin Peterson Sketchbooks workshop being offered on April 15, 16 for $165. An announcement will be made at the General Meeting.

New Business: A motion was passed to have the secretary record all motions made in the meetings, list by category and an updat-ed copy sent to all board members and committee chairs. If anyone has any questions, come to the Board.

Reward Luncheon: Thursday, March 31, 12.30 is the date set for the recognition luncheon for retiring PAL officers. PAL will con-tribute $15 toward each individual’s cost. RSVP by March 18. Randy was authorized to write one check for the total cost and then distribute the $15 to each attendee.

Sunshine Committee: Chris Cotton requested payment for past expenses. A motion was passed to give her $25 with the under-standing that future expenses be fully documented. A thank you note will be sent.

Art at meetings Coordinator: Roberta needs a new coordinator for the monthly art display at our meetings. She has individuals signed up through May. A request will be made at the General Meeting.

An announcement will be made at the General Meeting for a Vice President.

Poster Contest: Stevie presented the posters made by art students from Henderson Bay High, Gig Harbor High and South Kitsap High. The Board voted on all posters and selected 4 finalists to be voted on at the General meeting.

A physical therapist from The Bridge requested a small amount of art to be displayed in the lobby area. This request will be put in the newsletter and would need a coordinator.

Meeting adjourned at 11:15.
