Delta South MLA VickiHuntington is criticiz-ing B.C.’s environmentminister for a “hands-offapproach” to the envi-ronmental assessmentof Terminal 2, but MaryPolak insists that’s not thecase.

Earlier this year,Port Metro Vancouversubmitted a compre-hensive environmen-tal document to theCanadian EnvironmentalAssessment Agency, whichwill trigger a lengthyreview of the proposedthree-berth container ter-minal at Roberts Bank.

The document summa-rizes the results of severaldozen studies undertakenover four years for the pro-posed terminal.

Huntington said thisweek she “grilled” Polakfor publicly declining toask the port authority foradditional informationon matters of provincialjurisdiction. The objectof the comment phase ofthe assessment processis to ensure the scope ofinformation provided is ascomplete as possible forthe review panel, she said.

“The minister said againtoday her ministry willstep in to address gaps inthe environmental assess-ment process for T2, butthey have failed to fulfillthat promise to date,” saidthe independent MLA.“7,663 pages were sub-mitted in the port’s EIS(environmental impactstatement), and despitethe shortcomings of those

documents, the EAO (pro-vincial EnvironmentalAssessment Office) didn’thave one comment.Instead, it was left to indi-viduals, organizationsand federal agencies likeHealth Canada to pointout provincial issues miss-ing from the report.”

In July, the CanadianEnvironmentalAssessment Agencyreleased a list of additionalinformation the port wasstill required to includein its application. Manyof those requirementsare areas of provincialconcern, including issuesrelated to air quality, origi-nally identified by HealthCanada, Huntington said.

She added the prov-ince’s failure to notice theport had not consideredstandards set by its own

ministry raises seriousconcerns.

Polak told the OptimistHuntington doesn’t under-stand the process goingon, saying the provinceparticipated in the screen-ing of the environmentaldocument with the feds.

“Insofar as her say-ing we have a hands-offapproach, we’ve beenworking with CEEA fromthe beginning on this. Thepoint is, early on, we iden-tified which issues wereunder federal jurisdic-tion and the vast majorityare. So, the approach wehave taken is that we willobserve their process andevaluate as they proceed. If there are areas we don’tthink they have coveredsufficiently that are impor-tant to British Columbia’sinterests, then we will

proceed to have thoseassessed,” she explained.

“So it’s far from ahand-off approach. Our office is workingvery closely with theCanadian EnvironmentalAssessment (Agency)office.”

Meanwhile, the clockis about to start tickingagain on the T2 applica-tion. Ottawa asked theport authority for addi-tional information beforethe review could proceed, effectively stopping theclock until the environ-mental document wasdeemed complete.

In an early October let-ter to the government,Cliff Stuart, the port’s vice-president of infrastructure, advised they were gather-ing that information andexpected everything to be

ready for submission bythe end of the month.

Once all the additionalinformation is in thehands of the CEAA, thereview process, whichincludes public and stake-holder input, will beginonce again.

The project is sub-ject to an independentreview panel under theCanadian EnvironmentalAssessment Act, but willalso undergo an assess-ment under the BritishColumbia EnvironmentalAssessment Act. It alsorequires other permits andauthorizations.

The port has estimatedconstruction of the pro-ject would commencesometime in 2018 andwould take approximatelyfive-and-a-half years tocomplete.

A centuries-old Germantradition made an appear-ance in Tsawwassen ear-lier this month.

About a year ago,Richard and Ilona Yuedecided they neededmore space. The couple, along with their son MarkRoesler and his family, decided to demolish theYues’ home on JacksonWay and build a largerhome that could accom-modate Roesler, his wifeCharmaine and their twosons, Logan, 10, and Luca,4, with the Yues living inan “in-laws” suite in thelower portion of the home.

After months of plan-ning, a couple months agothe home was demolishedand construction began onthe new house.

As construction on theframe progressed, IlonaYue knew she wanted toincorporate a little of herGerman heritage into theproject — specifically arichtefest, a traditionalGerman ceremony to blessa new home, that datesback to the 14th century.

The ceremony includesseveral elements, includ-ing placing a tree or crownof branches on the roof

as the last rafter is put inplace. Ilona said what isused depends on whatregion of Germany you arein and she is from Berlinwhere they traditionallyuse the crown of foliage.

Ilona said in Germany, where the tradition is stillwidely practiced today, you can get the crownfrom a florist, however, shehad to make her own withinstructions she foundonline. She said the crown

also includes colourfulstreamers and sometimestrinkets to signify themembers of the family.

With construction pro-gressing, she said they hadabout a week’s notice ofwhen the last rafter wouldbe complete and the fam-ily went door-to-door toinvite neighbours to therichtefest, which also typi-cally includes a celebra-tory feast.

“It was really lovely,”

Ilona said of the richtefest, adding that about 60 to 70neighbours attended thefestivities.

During the ceremony, the Yues’ grandsons deliv-ered the crown to thebuilder, who placed it onthe roof. As per tradition, the head of the householdwould then hammer inthe final nail of the frame. In this case Richard andMark hammered in thefinal two nails.

Terry

Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry livedoutdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terrybit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned tothe finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather bea friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter andcan be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry woulddo best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understandcat body language. Terry likely will be fine as an indoor cat in his new home as longas there’s a bright window for him to stare out and watch the world go by. Can Terryget comfortable in your home?

Delta police will haveextra officers on the streetsover the next few days toensure everyone stays safethis Halloween.

Safety tips for parents:* Plan your route ahead of time and trick or treat in

familiar neighbourhoods.* Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries.* Stay on the sidewalks and off the streets. Cross only

at intersections and designated crosswalks, obeying alltraffic signals.

* Apply reflective tape to your Halloween costumesto help drivers see you— be especially cautious infoggy weather.

* If you or your children are wearing customs withweapons, make sure the weapons look fake enoughnot to be mistaken for the real thing.

* Remember to take an extra second while driving towatch out for trick or treaters.

If children are going out without parents:* Make sure your child is with a trusted group of

friends.* Give them a flashlight. A cell phone is a good idea

too.* Plan your child’s route ahead of time and ask them

to call you if they go on a street that isn’t on the route.* Discuss setting a curfew with older children and

make sure they have a watch with them.* Tell your children to try not to eat anything until

they get home so you can check their candy.Tricks for homeowners:

* Turn on your outdoor lights and replace burnt-outbulbs.

* Sweep wet leaves from your steps and sidewalk.* Use alternatives to candles in your pumpkins, such

as battery operated candles or flashlights.* Remember that some children have food allergies

– consider having alternatives to candy such as stickersfor those kids with allergies.

* Keep your pets inside. Halloween can be a fright-ening time for pets because of the costumes and thefireworks.

A local student is hopingto get the word out aboutthe Teal Pumpkin Project.

Madilynn Ukranitz,a Grade 8 student atSouthpointe Academy wholives in Ladner, saw a tealpumpkin while out trick-or-treating last Halloween. She found out about theFood Allergy Research &Education’s Teal Pumpkin

Project that aims to “raiseawareness of food aller-gies and promotes inclu-sion of all trick-or-treatersthroughout the Halloweenseason.”

The American organiza-tion started the initiativelast year.

Ukranitz, who has foodallergies, explained thathaving a teal pumpkin ondisplay means the homehas allergy safe treats tohand out.

“So that kids with aller-gies, like myself, can havea safer Halloween,” shesaid.

That could be non-fooditems like pencils, note-books or markers, or non-allergen candy.

She said her family willhave a teal pumpkin thisyear.

The 9,000-vote margin onelection night certainly hint-ed at it, so the subsequentpoll-by-poll numbers merelyprovided confirmation that

all parts of Delta were painted red inlast week’s federal election.

When the electoral map wasredrawn, combining a staunchly con-servative South Delta with a middle-of-the-road North Delta, it promptedspeculation as to what that would meancome election time. Would North Delta, which often holds the hammer inmunicipal elections, tip the scales fed-erally as well to potentially put an endto more than four decades of right ofcentre representation in these parts?

That didn’t turn out to be the case asvoters in all three communities agreedon the need for change.

With North Delta awash in red,Tsawwassen and Ladner, which hadn’tbeen represented by a Liberal sinceTom Goode in the late 1960s, fol-lowed suit, although it should be notedthat Carla Qualtrough’s margin overConservative incumbent Kerry-LynneFindlay, while significant, wasn’t aslarge in South Delta. In a closer race,North Delta could well have been thedeciding factor, but it wasn’t this timearound.

How this came to be is a complexequation but from where I’m sittingthere appears to be a trio of major fac-tors that played out to varying degrees, including a decline in popular vote forthe Conservatives across the country. That wasn’t enough to knock off AliceWong in Richmond or prevent DianneWatts from claiming victory in SouthSurrey-White Rock, so there was some-thing beyond just sagging Conservativesupport that changed fortunes in theright wing stronghold of Delta.

Part of that had to be voter dissat-isfaction on a number of local issues, including radio towers, communitymailboxes and port expansion, whilestrategic voting, particularly by NewDemocrats, sealed the deal. Eventhough the NDP fielded a crediblecandidate in Jeremy Leveque, who notonly was conversant with the issues butwas passionate about them, support forthe party plummeted as voters clearlylooked for the candidate most likely todefeat the Conservatives.

With leakage from the right and con-verts from the left, Qualtrough was ide-ally positioned and it showed in a bigway last Monday.

Last week B.C.’s privacycommissioner issued astinging report on howa provincial govern-ment employee had

destroyed emails relating to aninquiry about the Highway ofTears. A government employeecounselled another to eraseemails related to the inquiry. When that employee resisted, the other employee took over thecomputer and deleted the emails. He then swore under oath he hadnot done this, but finally con-fessed.

In response, the minister oftechnology, innovation and citi-zens’ services claimed it was an“exception.” Further checking bythe privacy commissioner, how-ever, showed that up to 40 percent of all emails handled in thepremier’s office were being sys-tematically destroyed. Includedwas the commissioner’s state-ment that “the [premier’s] deputychief of staff has not personallyretained a single email she hasever sent from her governmentemail address.”

So where are the records? Howdoes this track with the premier’selection promise to have the mostopen, transparent government inthe country?

Closer to home, in Marchof 2013 the Ministry ofTransportation published a con-

sultation guide that showed fivescenarios to replace the GeorgeMassey Tunnel. This was to helpin the discussions.

In September of that year, thepremier announced at the Unionof B.C. Municipalities conven-tion (all mayors and councillorsin B.C.) that the tunnel was tobe replaced by a single eight- to10-lane bridge at the same loca-tion.

In April 2014, I submitted afreedom of information requestfor “materials such as documents, data, analysis prepared for thepremier to allow her to determineand to announce that the MasseyTunnel would be replaced by abridge over the Fraser River.” OnJune 4, I received a letter stating:“Although a thorough search wasconducted, no records were locat-ed in response to your request.”

So what happened? How didthe premier become involved, how did she become awareenough of the discussions, thepro and con? Did the cabinet par-ticipate in the multi-billion dollardecision so she could make thispronouncement?

Her public comment last weekwas: “Decisions I make are mostlymade in cabinet meeting andall that’s evident to the publicbecause all of that is recorded…and released.” But no recordscould be found, so did she simplymake the decision on her own inthe middle of a shower?

I later asked the question of thesenior public servants in chargeof the George Massey TunnelReplacement Project office inRichmond. Their response wassilence. I asked them for thefinancial analysis of comparingthe five choices. They responded:“It was high level.” I then asked:“Where were the notes?” Theysaid none were taken.

So just how open and disci-plined is the provincial govern-ment? Is this how you want adecision costing billions of dollarsto be made? Who is hiding what?Where are the notes and briefingpapers?Ian Robertson is a retired pro-

fessional engineer who has beenactive in South Delta affairs forover three decades.

Editor:Jack-o’-lanterns, trick-

or-treaters, haunted hous-es and costume parties.Halloween is full of funthings for you and yourfamily to enjoy, but it’s oneof those holidays that isenjoyed more by peoplethan by pets. Keep thefollowing precautions inmind when preparing forthe frightfully fun festivi-ties and help ensure thateveryone in your family —including your pet — has asafe Halloween.

Keep your pet in aquiet place; away fromtrick-or-treaters and otherHalloween activities. Youmay know those littlemonsters and goblins thatcome knocking aren’t real, but your pet doesn’t. Dogsand cats are creatures ofhabit and could becomefrightened or agitated bythe unaccustomed sightsand sounds of these cos-

tumed visitors.In addition, frequently

opened doors provide theperfect opportunity foryour pet to escape, whichcan go unnoticed duringall the commotion. Be sureall pets are wearing collarsand ID tags in case of anaccidental getaway.

Place live flame deco-rations like candles andjack-o’-lanterns out of yourpet’s reach. Curious crit-ters risk being singed orburned by the flame. Theycould also easily knockover a candle or pumpkinand cause a fire.

Keep all candy awayfrom pets. Those sweetsmay taste great to crit-ters, but candy, especiallychocolate, can be toxic topets. Candy wrappers canalso be harmful if swal-lowed. Instead, tempt yourpet with a few of his/herfavourite treats.

Resist the urge to put

your pet in a costume. You may think your petlooks adorable dressed asa princess, but most petsdon’t like the constraintsof costumes. If you dodecide to play dress-up,make sure the costumeis safe for your pet anddoesn’t constrain his/hermovement, hearing orability to breathe. Checkthe costume for parts thatyour pet could chew offand choke on and look fordangling pieces like flow-ing capes that could injurehim/her.

Don’t let the familydog accompany your kidson their trick-or-treating.Children may have a dif-ficult time handling a petand your pooch could getloose, especially if yourdog is spooked by thestrange sights and soundsof all those trick-or-treat-ers.

headquarters in thechurch on 47A Avenue arejust across the street fromthe Park Villa apartments. In August of this year, ParkVilla received its newmail-boxes. They are indoorsjust inside the lobby.

Once the newmailboxeswere put in place, theresidents were told theirmail would be deliveredto these boxes. All theresidents were given theirown key to their mailbox. For the first few days theresidents got their mail attheir mailbox. Then themail started to again behome delivered to eachapartment as the courte-

ous mailman explainedthat home delivery was toremain until after the elec-tion.

We had the election andone of Justin Trudeau’spromises was for us (andall of Canada) to continueto have home delivery. Wewill see.

Now just this week, someone (we know notwho) came in and clearedan area at the corner of47A Avenue and LaidlawStreet for mailboxes.Nothing was said aboutthis land clearing. Theycame, they cleared andthey left.

The apartment managerhas phoned and emailedeveryone save for the Popeand the Queen trying todiscover why this area

was cleared for a mailboxwhen the whole mailboxplan has been put on hold.

One suggestion hasbeen this mailbox is forthe new housing projectacross Laidlaw Street. Ifso, why put it on Park Villaproperty? If these mail-boxes are to be used, thenthis area will be coveredwith all the junk mail themailbox holders do notwant and who is going toclean up that mess?

Another suggestion isthese mailboxes are for theresidents of Park Villa, thatpossibly someone forgotthat Park Villa already hasmailboxes.

In the words of SherlockHolmes, “This I feel is athree pipe problem.”

Out in the Pacific Oceanis the biggest garbagedump in the world. It iscalled the Pacific TrashVortex or the Great PacificGarbage Patch. A stag-gering quantity of trashgets trapped in the spiral-ing currents of the NorthPacific.

The bulk of it is plas-tic, much no larger thanconfetti, making the totalsize difficult to measure.Estimates range fromone per cent of the sizeof Texas to twice the sizeof the continental UnitedStates. Sometimes debrisfrom this patch escapesand washes up on ourshores.

Do you ever feel youhave something like thatswirling around in theocean of your brain?Memories of all thosethings we have done or

were done to us? Stuff wehave watched, looked at,read or listened to? Allthose things we have saidor were said to us?

It all goes into thisswirling mess that, for themost part, remains underthe surface, contained byour mental currents. Buttoo often, whether we areawake or asleep, stuff pops

to the surface and washesup on our mental shores. What can we do?

First, we need to becareful about what we takein. We can’t change ourpast, but we don’t have tokeep repeating it. “Finally, brothers and sisters, what-ever is true, whatever isnoble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, what-ever is lovely, whatever isadmirable—if anything isexcellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”(Philippians 4:8, NIV)

Second, seek God’scleansing. He’s the onlyone who can clean up themess. “If we confess oursins, he is faithful and justand will forgive us oursins and purify us from allunrighteousness.” (1 John1:9, NIV)Mike invites dialogue at

Cruising aboardHAL’s Eurodamfamiliarizes us with

captivating Baltic ports.Of them all, St

Petersburg stands out. There, ship’s excursionsprove perfect for first timevisitors like us. With theneed for costly visas elimi-nated and transportationsimplified, two sightseeingdays are filled to the max.Local guide Tanya intro-duces her storied city.

Named for his patronsaint, Apostle Peter,Tsar Peter founded StPetersburg in 1703. Thisnew capital providedcrucial Baltic access andprospered, despite frigidwinters. Nowadays, ice-breakers keep the portopen year round.

Our tour reveals a diz-zying kaleidoscope of leg-endary city sights. French-inspired architecture tagsthis city as “Paris of theEast.” An enormous eques-trian statue memorializesTsar Peter while nearbyDecembrists’ Squarerecalls an 1825 revolt.

Massive red granite col-umns support St Isaac’s, aRussian Orthodox cathe-dral designed to accom-modate 14,000 standingworshippers.

Driving through oldneighbourhoods and oninto the countryside, wereach World HeritagePeterhof, Tsar Peter’s sum-mer palace.

“Starting as a smallfamily residence, thisroyal complex eventu-ally encompassed theseauxiliary buildings, upperand lower parks, severalpalaces and even a forest,”Tanya explains.

Tsar Peter designedPeterhof’s first 30 roomsin 1714. DaughterElizabeth and grandson’swife Catherine the Greatexpanded his efforts.

From the front terrace,we gaze over the GrandCascade. This magnificentcreation incorporates 64fountains, 200 gilded stat-ues, bas-reliefs and otherornamentation. Amid itscentral pond, Rastrelli’sgolden Samson wrestlesa lion.

Aboard a hydrofoil,we’re back in the city

Visiting Resurrection ofChrist Church concludesthis day.

Onion domes sparklewith blue, yellow andgreen glazed decorativetiles, two in gold.

Inside, 7,500 squaremetres of glorious mosa-ics drench walls and ceil-ings with brilliant, almostoverpowering colour.Breathtaking motifs frameradiant biblical scenesand figures. Shimmeringin gold, silver and col-oured enamels, Holy Gatesenclose the main altar.

Wondrous artworks fillour second day. One of theworld’s oldest museums,The Hermitage housesthree million pieces of artin the Winter Palace andfour other buildings.

A marble spectacle initself, the 18th-centuryJordan Staircase leadsupward to a lavish secondfloor ballroom.

Following her husband’sdeath, Catherine the Greatmet eligible bachelors inthe smaller Pavilion Hall. There, the bedazzlingPeacock Clock, a mag-nificent gift from one suchsuitor, still works.

Over 100 grand hallsand rooms exhibit 13th to20th century European art.

Among many mar-ble sculptures, we spotVoltaire, eyes a-twinkle.Catherine, we learn, com-missioned Houdon tocreate this likeness of theFrench philosopher, herbeloved friend and corre-spondent.

Plantsbelieved toprotectandheal still used today

These daysHalloweencharacterslook more likea Hollywood

zombie set, but the centraltheme is one any long-agopagan would recognize: onthis night the dead walkagain (at least symbolical-ly) and spirits roam freely.

In those ancient times, healing, magic and spir-ituality were all linked ina complex dance that’snot difficult nowadays todismiss as superstition.Except that some of theplants then consideredpowerful have been foundto be so.

Hemp (aka marijuana)is one of these. It was oneof the ingredients in the“flying ointment” said tobe used by witches to givethe illusion of levitation.Once, it was reputed toassist visions for psychics.

Butit hadanotherlife formanythousandsof years asa sourceof foodfrom itsseeds, asa sedativeand pain-reliever and as afibre that produced strongand durable cloth. In morerecent times, its narcoticproperties overshadowedits more practical uses. Now the pendulum isswinging back again.

Another “flying”ingredient is aconitum.Today this is still used (invery minute doses) as apain-killer in alternativemedicine. It’s valued for itsbeauty and slug-resistanceas a garden plant but is

hugely poisonous.Used as a wolf poison

for many years, aconitumshould be treated withgloved hands and theutmost care.

Yet another “flying”ingredient is foxglove(Digitalis), which producesthe heart stimulant digox-in. One ancient namefor the plant is WitchesThimbles. Tall and eye-

catchingwith pinkor whitebell-flowers, itwill growin deepshade, flower forweeks andpopulatethe neigh-

bourhood if you let it.Hellebore, another

“flying” favourite, wasused long ago as a curefor worms, lice and as avomiting agent. It fell intodisuse due to a high deathrate among patients. Todayits beautiful cup-shapedflowers and decorativeleaves make it a valuedgarden plant.

But hellebore sap onnaked skin can give younasty burns and blisters.Wear gloves for seed-col-

lecting and pruning andthoroughly clean prunersafter using them for hel-lebores.

Hazel is one of the treesassociated with Halloweenalong with willow. Bothwere considered magictrees with an especialattraction for water. Theyare still used for waterdivining.

Unfortunately hazels inNorth America have beenattacked by Eastern Filbertblight and whole orchardsof European hazels havealready been torn up. Thecontorted hazel is oneof those affected. NativeCanadian hazels havesome resistance.

Willow’s magic includedits ability to relieve painand to heal. The activesubstance in willow issalicylic acid, which is nowmade synthetically in thepain-reliever known asaspirin.

Cuttings can root fasterand stronger if started inwillow water. This is madeby using water that hashad many small-cut wil-low twigs soaking in it. Thetwigs are removed after aday or so and the cuttingseither started in that wateror watered several timeswith it.

It’s interesting howmany of the plants onceused to protect against evilspirits were also believedto have healing potential. For instance, ivy was oncebelieved to cure tooth-aches and make cornsvanish.Anne Marrison is happy

In September 2013, the Province of B.C. announced that the George Massey Tunnelwill be replaced with a new bridge. One of our transmission lines runs throughthe tunnel so we need to relocate it. We’re studying conceptual designs for threealternatives for relocating the existing transmission line out of the tunnel:

ALTERNATIVE 1: An overhead transmission line crossing the Fraser RiverALTERNATIVE 2: An underground transmission line running under the Fraser RiverALTERNATIVE 3: A transmission line located on the new bridge

HOW YOUR INPUT WILL BE USEDWhat we hear from you during consultation about the three alternatives, alongwith input from First Nations, and our study results, will be considered as wedetermine a preferred alternative.

One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is thatit’s only for the extremely wealthy. But the truth is, anyone withinvestments, a home, a small business, or any assets he or shewould like to pass on should have an estate plan.

An estate plan is much more than a will. It is a plan designed tosafeguard your estate, smoothly transfer assets upon your passingand care for the ones you love. It is the best way to ensure yourassets will be handled as you wish and your legacy is preserved. And it can provide important tax advantages, too.

An estate plan doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, there arejust five steps to developing a successful estate plan:

1 Simply starting. Jump right in and commit to creating an estate plan. Meetwith your financial advisor and begin the process.

2 Following through. Complete all the components pertinent to your estateplan, and consider including each of the five key estate planning documentsmost people have (see sidebar).

3 Empowering. Appoint an appropriate fiduciary to oversee the estate plan, someone you trust to carry out your wishes when you are no longer able to.

4 Sharing. Communicate the plan with everyone it impacts. Let them knowyour intentions so there are no misunderstandings.

5 Maintaining. Update your plan regularly, especially whenever events in yourlife warrant changes.

Take that first step and talk to your financial advisor today about creating yourestate plan and turning your life’s work into your legacy.

Essential EstatePlanning Documents

Everyone needs an estate plan

Time for your yearly beneficiary checkup?A lot can happen in a year: births, deaths, weddings, divorces, graduations, new jobs, and retirements. That’s why it’s a good Idea to review the namedbeneficiaries in your estate plan, retirement accounts, banking accounts, insurance policies and trustdocuments at least annually.

One of the best ways to make a beneficiary check part ofyour routine is picking a consistent date to do it everyyear. But it’s also wise to review your beneficiaries duringor immediately following significant life events, such as:

• A change in mental or health status

• Death or incapacity of your spouse or child• The birth or adoption of a child or grandchild• A significant change in net worth• Nearing retirement• The impending sale of a family business• Changes in tax laws

Whenever you review your beneficiaries, be sure toinvolve your financial advisor to ensure all your assetsare considered and that you don’t overlook opportunitiesto protect your estate and your loved ones.

As the only three 18-year-old Delta girls playing rep“A” softball this past season, Taylor Woodward, OliviaPriestlay and Keeley Ainge sure made plenty of noise.

A week after Woodward was named Softball B.C.’sMinor Athlete of the Year for her memorable season withthe ’97 Delta Heat, Priestlay has been recognized for herdecorated career by Softball Canada.

The Delta Secondary gradate is the 2015 recipient ofthe Ethel Boyce Memorial Achievement Award— pre-sented annually to a female and male player who hasexhibited leadership traits and skills in softball. Ontario’sGreg Hammell was the co-winner. Both receive $1,000 tohelp towards their education costs.

Priestlay is now in her first-year with the UBCThunderbirds where she is playing under coach GordCollings. Her impressive minor career includes par-ticipating in four Canadian Championships with the’97 White Rock Renegades, including this past summerwhen they fell to Woodward’s ’97 Heat in the gold medalgame.

The standout third baseman was a tournament all-star at U16 Nationals in 2013 and also won the top bat-ter award that year. She has played in seven provincialchampionships.

Priestlay joined Woodward on Team B.C. which domi-nated its opponents in route to winning gold at the 2015Western Canada Games back in August. She will offi-cially be presented the Ethel Boyce Award at the SoftballCanada Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on Nov. 14 inWinnipeg.

Ainge, also a Delta Secondary graduate, was a domi-nant pitcher/outfielder with the Fraser Valley Fusionwho is now continuing her career with Woodward atDouglas College.

one for Tsawwassen swimming standoutMarkus Thormeyer.Coming off an impressive summer com-

peting for Canada at the Pan AmericanGames andWorld Junior Championships, theWinskill Dolphins Swim Club product hasmade a verbal commitment to continue hiscareer at the University of Southern California(USC). Thormeyer is currently with SwimCanada’s High Performance Center, based outof the UBC Aquatic Centre after graduatingfrom South Delta Secondary School in June. The move to a NCAA Division One pro-

grammeans Thormeyer must make thesignificant adjustment from competing ina 50-metre Olympic size pool to the muchsmaller U.S. college pools which are typically25 yards in length. Yet, he is still expected tomake an immediate impact with the Trojans’sprint freestyle and backstroke squads.

At the World Juniors in Singapore,Thormeyer helped Canada capture gold tinhe 4x100 mixed freestyle relay thanks to ahuge second leg swim. Teamed with JavierAcevedo, Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck,Thormeyer swam a blistering time of 48.77seconds to move Canada up two positions. It was then up to Oleksiak and Ruck to com-plete the comeback with a winning time of3:27.71 to hold off Austraila (3:28.59) andRussia (3:28.79).He also qualified for the finals in three indi-

vidual swims, highlighted by personal bestclockings in the 100 backstroke (55.11 sec-onds) and 100 free (49.76).Back in July, he was the youngest member

of Canada’s swim team at the Pan AmericanGames in Toronto. He also won the 100 backat the National Championships.Earlier this month, Thormeyer was named

South Delta Midget A1 Stormhave started off the season on a win-ning note by capturing the KelownaMinor Hockey Midget Tournamentlast weekend.Despite having to play two 7 a.m.

games and dealing with a flu bugthat struck the team, the Storm gut-ted out a well-deserved tournamentcrown. They scored 23 goals whileonly giving up 12 over the course ofthe five games thanks to some greatdefensive play and strong goaltend-ing.The opening game Friday after-

noon saw the Storm come out slug-gish against West Kelowna. TheOkanagan squad scored a lucky goalwith just over a minute remainingto pull out a 2-1 win. Jordan Bogresshad the lone South Delta goal, while head coach Lawson (Boots)Boutilier told his players he hopedto get another shot at West Kelowna. An early Saturday morning start

against a very physical Pentictonteam saw the Storm capitalize on

a number of second period powerplay opportunities to break thegame open in route to a 4-2 win.Bogress paced the attack with a pair, while Greg Porter and Matt Rogerseach added singles.Back on the ice Saturday after-

noon, the Storm cruised to a 9-2 vic-tory over the Spokane Junior Chiefs.Leading the way with four goals wasrecent addition Bryn Davies. Porterchipped in with two. Singles wentto Jared Garcha, Jeevan Bath andBogress. The Storm then had to wait until

later that evening to see if their vic-tories and 2-1 record were enoughto carry them into the semi finals. The reward was another 7 a.m.

game, this time against a very quickand physical team from St. Albert,Alberta.South Delta came out of the gate

firing on all cylinders and were up6-1 at the end of the first period. St.Albert then mounted a comebackand the Storm held on for a 6-5 win.

Porter had a hat trick. Also scoringwere Connor Bavaro, Zack Vaughanand DaviesCoach Boutilier then got his wish. The final was a rematch with West

Kelowna who had defeated SalmonArm in the other semi final.Despite playing their fifth game in

less than 48 hours, the Storm weredetermined to avenge the earlierdefeat and did just that, overcom-ing a 1-0 deficit to produce a well-earned 3-1 victory.Porter continued his torrid scor-

ing pace with two more goals to givehim seven in the tournament. EthanFowler also scored.Other members of the Storm

include goaltenders TylerMcLennan and Josh Morrell, defencemen Jesse Conroy, HaydenDance, Thomas Morison, ConnorSagert and Matthew Salas and for-wards Tyler Rogers, Emile Tracy andZack Valana.Assistant Rob Bogress rounds out

the coaching staff.

HILTON (BEAVERS), Ellen LaureneFebruary 18, 1920 - October 09, 2015

Laurene passed away peacefully at Ridge MeadowsHospital on a sunny autumn day. Fall was her favoriteseason as she loved watching the changing colours ofthe trees. Laurene led a productive and inspiring life.Born in Exeter, Ontario, she spent her early years onthe family farm near Exeter. As a teenager she movedwith her family in to Exeter, where she excelled atmusic and played the organ in the Methodist church. After high school she attended the London, OntarioSchool of Nurs ing where she graduated as aRegistered Nurse. She met her husband, Don, whenhe was stationed at the Air Force base near London,Ontario. When WWII ended they married and settledin Vancouver, BC, Don’s home town. Laurene nursedat VGH and other Vancouver hospitals unti l sheretired in 1986. They moved to Delta and travelledextensively to Europe, China, Australia and othercountries. Laurene was an avid rockhound andLapidarian and a member of both the Richmond andDelta Gem and Mineral Clubs. She enjoyed searchingfor rocks with her pick and shovel traversing up steepmountain slopes and down dark mine shafts. Thegarage became her lapidarian workshop, and it heldrock tumblers, saws, drills and numerous tools of thetrade. She crafted gold and silver jewellery, and stonecarvings, but was best known for her gem tree. Shedonated many of her trees to her clubs’ annualshows, and it gave her great delight to see the lookon children’s faces when they chose their gem treeprize. Laurene led a busy life, but she always had timefor family. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.Pre-deceased by her husband, Don, in 1992, she issurvived by her children Ron (Tara), Janet, and Jack,as well as grandchildren Sarah (John) and Ryan, andtwo great-grandsons Matthew and Andrew.

Many thanks to the wonderful, caring staff at ChartwellWillow Manor in Maple Ridge where she lived for thepast two years.
