In March, Delta reached a new milestone in its commitment to education promotion.

The DeltaMOOCx Massive Open Online Course sponsored by Delta Electronics Foundation was officially launched on March 2. It was Taiwan's first interactive online course tailored to vocational education. Breaking the limit of classroom-setting, the open space of voluntary learning and community forum, supported by Delta's products such as ultra-short-throw projection and interactive whiteboards, managed to create a more visualized teaching environment, flipping the traditional mode of classroom teaching.

Moreover, Delta partnered with selected high schools in the past two years to build a digital flagship classroom. The classroom applies total solutions integrating Delta interactive projection and NovoClassroom teaching platform to boost students' interests in learning and facilitate exchanges between students and teachers. Meanwhile, Delta products of energy conservation and safety monitoring also help build a smart campus with low carbon emission. The "Special Report" will feature a full coverage.

This January, Delta FMBG participated in the renowned CES and the largest AHR Expo for industrial air conditioning in the US, showcasing its energy-saving home ventilation fan and its EC-tech industrial/commercial fan solutions. In "Brand People", we have a special coverage about the FMBG General Manager Mr. Wilson Huang. In the report, he shared with us the strategies for the successful switch from key account business model to that of consumer products carrying "Delta" brand.

We will also take you to tour the CES show floor, where you will see this year's industry trends and how major companies promoted their brands using those media consumers are most attached to and introduced the newest applications of IoT through "user experience". CES was just like an arena filled with future technologies. By integrating hardware and software, various innovative technologies opened a broad horizon for visitors. The "Brand Academy" will have a closer look.

To create "user experience" like at CES show, Delta's datacenter roadshow truck, which integrated various solutions at MCIS started its tour at the end of March in China. This bus will head to 40 major cities in China and spend five months, reaching deep into contact with users to learn about their actual needs and come out with more effective products and services. More exciting stories will be shared in this issue of "Brand News Bi-Monthly".

• Bi-directional digital teaching has successfully stimulated interactions between students and teachers

Delta's Smart Campus Solution transforms education

< Text by ESSBD, DEF >

As they walk into their middle school classrooms, the teachers are not carrying chalk or markers in their hands, but stylus pens, as the blackboards at the front of their classrooms have been replaced by electronic whiteboards. The students write down their answers and ideas on tablets and then tap a "Send" button, to share their findings with teachers, filling math classes with fun interactions. This bi-directional digital teaching has successfully transformed traditional passive learning into that of active participation, and the key is Delta's Integrated Education Solution.

In recent years, Delta has invested in the education market, hoping to nurture a greater number of excellent students. In 2013, Delta partnered with Taipei's Dongshan High School to build digital flagship classrooms, where mobile teaching platforms would be complemented by Vivitek's interactive ultra-short-throw projector, the NovoConnect wireless presentation system, and tablet-based education solutions, helping students' initiative and motivating learning. Dongshan High School has also nurtured seed-faculties, for "innovative teaching" through a match of hardware equipment and teaching software such as mobile platforms and electric whiteboards.

pecial Report Tech tools to enliven classroom instructionDongshan High School principal Chen Jiayuan has a lot to say about the promotion of technology-based teaching. "The dedication of teachers is a key to success. Though tough at the beginning, this is the right trend to follow. Once they get used to it, the teachers will see the value of the extra effort during the early tough days," said Mr. Chen.

"We were quite against it at the beginning," said Dongshan High School Chinese literature teacher Shen Cheng-yi, "as we were used to traditional ways of teaching. However, the teaching was rich and fun for students. After all, children are more interested in things that have images." Mr. Shen shared his experience as a seed-instructor. "What is unique about Delta's NovoBoard electronic whiteboard and NovoClassroom tablet-based interactive teaching platform is that children can perform and express themselves on stage," said Mr. Shen. "Though they weren't used it to at the beginning, they started to like this way of lecturing. This could truly become a major trend for the learning as teachers gradually step down from the front stage."

Founded on teaching, backed by IT"In addition to behavior in a classroom setting, the concept behind transformation of classrooms is the preparation," explained Mr. Leo Chan, Manager of Delta ESSBD. "Teaching is no longer a one-way passage of instruction and knowledge. Students can follow their own pace and gain more in-depth exploration from their learning activities. They can even give feedback to their teachers and peers. This kind of 360-degree learning helps to build and accumulate confidence for the students." The core of Delta's efforts in development of digital learning is based on the notion of "Founded on teaching, backed by IT". This IT-based teaching helps boost motivation and participation by the students.

Chen, a student from the eighth grade, fell in love with learning because of the digital classroom. "Classes are like friends chatting. We no longer receive knowledge one-way from the teachers, and just write down notes, but we get to create new things as we learn"

Delta's Integrated Education Solution has successfully stimulated interactions and learning between students and teachers. In addition to receiving knowledge, students also get to learn about ways to construct a knowledge-based system. In the future, Delta hopes to gradually build a complete management platform that will extensively incorporate preparation for teaching, classroom interaction, family interaction, and after-class learning.

Delta's Smart Campus Solution offers to build a learning environment with low carbon emissionsIn addition to its digital flagship classroom, Delta is also utilizing its innovative products in education technology, smart green energy, and safety monitoring for applications. campus with low carbon emissions, hoping to create a replicable mode of operation. Delta assisted Dongshan High School by establishing smart green energy and smart management to "visualize" energy and display total power usage for major buildings on campus. Delta's EnOL smart green energy cloud platform enables utilization of tablets and cellphones that control equipment such as lights and fans inside a classroom, which helps to promote education on the conservation of energy. By integrating information platforms on green energy and monitoring blind spots for video safety, the iPEMS display system (2x2 splice wall) installed in schools offers early warning along with more services created for a smart campus.

Delta's interactive whiteboard adds more value for DeltaMOOCx Recently, Delta launched its WX21i interactive whiteboard utilizing ultra-short-throw edge-blending projection. Two ultra-short-throw projectors with 3400 luminance are blended on a 348 by 104 centimeter large screen. With interactive writing software, teachers can simultaneously demonstrate multiple applications on the screen.

This DeltaMOOCx teaching solution was officially launched in March. It is an open online learning platform that was created for vocational education. When filming the lecture utilizing the projection slides, the teachers can simultaneously replay a video, open websites, or start animation programs on the screen. There is no need to switch. A high-quality image with high luminance will maintain clarity, even when filmed through lenses. Courses can now be more interesting and efficient, and teachers are making frequent inquiries about opportunities for trial use.

With digital teaching, Delta's integrated service for video and smart campus is inspiring students to take the initiative in learning. It also helps build a community of students and teachers that learn together, and demonstrates a new model for innovative education.

Delta introduces single-phase UPS to the Akmola distribution facility< Text by MCISBU >

Delta's Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) were successfully installed at an Akmola Electricity Distribution Company (AREK) facility based in Kazakhstan. A majority of the businesses and organizations in the Akmola region, Kazakhstan's main industrial area, are connected to AREK electricity mains. A new station was recently put into operation with equipment that requires continuous protection from power outages. The station required universal and interchangeable sources that would provide guaranteed power to different types of equipment ranging from control panels to servers and automated electricity control and metering systems.

Delta's distributor, Spektr RS, proposed the implementation of single-phase RT Series UPS from Delta Electronics with a one hour backup time. Four UPSs with nine battery packs connected were installed. The unit allows for the continuous operation of mission-critical applications. "Our electricity network company provides electricity to tens of thousands of people here, and reliability is a key factor on which we focus," commented Alexander Kovalenko, chief engineer at AREK. "The high quality of the equipment, the prospect of immediate supply, and the possibility of expanding the UPS system in the future are what attracted us to Delta Electronics."

The Delta RT Series single-phase UPS with online double conversion features an innovative compact architecture, high output power factor, and low input current harmonic distortion. Additional battery modules are available for shared use so that the UPS provides cost savings with two units working in parallel.

"More of our end-clients are not merely looking at the appearance of products," said FMBG General Manager Mr. Wi lson Huang, " they also care more about built-in components, such as Delta's power supplies and fans that all carry Delta logo. The pros and cons of the products make an impression on the end-clients about the Delta brand."

Changing mindsets from B2B to B2CSince joining Delta's FMBG in 1990, Mr. Huang has witnessed his team's growth and success. Leading the FMBG to become the world's number one in market share for DC fans and heat dissipation systems, most of Mr. Huang's past business has focused on key accounts for industrial products. This was based on standard products sold via distribution channels. In 2010, the FMBG crossed from B2B to B2C and developed Delta's first consumer product with its own brand, adding a retail channel to its mode of operation.

Mr. Huang has insight on operations based on various types of businesses.

"Industrial products require more consistency. Managers for key customers usually focus on staying close to those customers and their customers by trying to truly understand the needs behind their needs while being knowledgeable about developments on their competitors' side. They can then devise a plan for long-term moves and product developments. However, consumer products are different. Because of rapid changes, they must stay on top of the market pace

Strengthening core technologies and product innovation to expand applicationsAn interview with Mr. Wilson Huang, General Manager of Delta FMBG

In January Delta FMBG participated in the renowned CES consumer electronics show and the AHR Expo for industrial air conditioning in the US. The FMBG showcased its energy-saving home ventilation fans and its EC (electronically commutated) industrial/business fans, which were highlights of those shows. In "Brand People", we interview FMBG General Manager Mr. Wilson Huang, where he shares strategies and expectations for a successful switch to consumer products based on the "Delta" brand.

eople and have a full knowledge about changes in consumer preferences. We have staff dedicated to timely correspondence with consumer posts on websites as well as feedback from channel retailers so we can acquire consumer evaluations and suggestions for improving use. This can then be used for adjusting the direction of product strategies for the next phase."

To cater to both B2B and B2C modes of business, Mr. Huang knew he had to change his team's mindset accordingly. Though less than 5 years in developing ventilation fans, the team at FMBG managed to increase revenues year-after-year by attentively listening to their customers and establishing an excellent mode of cooperation with distributors. Now, the group is enjoying decent performance in both Taiwan and the US, with close to 900 thousand shipments made as of February 2015.

"Ventilation fans are mostly manufactured under Delta's own brand name. By focusing on areas such as architecture, hotels, and air conditioning in the US with a requirement for quietness and energy efficiency, we have built up partnerships with more than 200 distributors, many of which are in the top 50 distributors in the US. They often offer valuable suggestions for Delta's fans, so we can improve and enhance accordingly, which helps us a lot in building a good reputation for the Delta brand in the US," Mr. Huang said.

Strengthening core technologies and expanding areas of business"An excellent brand is not just rooted in the products themselves. It is a mark that is maintained and refreshed every day. It is an image accumulated after a long period of time," explained Mr. Huang using terms such as "abstract" and "substance". "'Abstract' refers to the brand and look of the product, while 'substance' represents the accumulation of core competencies and serves as a foundation. Consolidating the abstract and substantial aspects is vital for giving a brand a solid foundation from the inside out."

Although FMBG is a leader in fans as a result of long-term dedication, Mr. Huang still works very hard.

"Delta founder Mr. Cheng has often said that technical competency is the key to a long-lasting brand. That statement is my constant self-reminder. The only way for us to maintain competitiveness is to strengthen our core technical competencies. We always encourage innovation for our products. Engineers from FMBG have taken the initiative in R&D and applying for patents as a way to constantly stimulate innovative ideas."

However, the development of the fan industry does not come without limits. As a result, expanding application areas has become a goal that Mr. Huang is currently working toward.

"At a strategy meeting last year, the FMBG adopted a vision of 'being the most highly-efficient air-mover and heat-transform provider' to become a provider of smaller-sized heat flow modules for handheld mobile devices and fans for higher wind volume and pressure. We are refining Delta's core technologies for products with fluid dynamics and heat flow for fan blades, motor and control, as well as mechanisms and noise. We continue our R&D efforts for air flow and heat conduction products, while enhancing their overall product and energy efficiency."

Mr. Huang led the FMBG in clarifying their positioning, which was considered an important strategy for the development of the group. In addition to expanding FMBG's target market, their recently-launched high-efficiency fan and heat exchange products also helped open more business opportunities. The team also thought about employing methods such as M&A and strategic partnerships, as a way of introducing new techniques or manufacturing technologies with a shorter learning curve to achieve accelerated growth.

After years in the business, Mr. Huang had Delta join an association that formulated rules for the ventilation fan industry.

"Delta became a member of HVI (Home Ventilating Institute) in the US four years ago, which has helped the company learn about industry trends and the direction of development for technical specifications. This was beneficial for the development of products that needed to comply with the US-based Energy Star Most Efficient standard. Although there is no standard available for ventilation fans in Taiwan, we took the initiative by contacting the Bureau of Energy at the Ministry of Economic Affairs to work out a standard mark that signifies energy-efficiency for ventilation fans. We were also the first company to receive this mark for our ventilation fans. All our products sold in Taiwan have received this mark."

Delta's culture of "Just do it"Having joined Delta more than 30 years ago, Mr. Huang has inherited a consistent pattern of thought for Delta people in terms of leadership and management style.

"During the development for a new product, its teams do not say too much about it to external parties. They get a solid foundation step-by-step. By starting with end results, they get to test whether the strategies and plans for the early phases are thorough enough by checking them against end results."

"Just do it!" Mr. Huang has also instilled Delta's "Strive to Change" culture into his team.

"Delta offers an environment for people to achieve their fullest potential. The IT market offered a track of development that serves as a model to follow. However, future markets require individuals to find their own unique way. In addition to surpassing competitors in technologies, we encourage our colleagues to learn from an applications perspective and create their own goals as well as new markets from scratch. They should be able to constantly adapt to changing circumstances and be able to survive in adverse environments."

As a "Deltan", Mr. Huang leads his team with prudence, while taking initiative to create more business opportunities for the FMBG.

Brand arena: Product trends and brand presentation at CES 2015

< Text by Brand Management Office >

Imagine this as your lifestyle: You finish a busy day of work, and a fully-charged car is parked waiting at an exit of a parking lot, playing a song from this week's TOP 100. You get in the car and a smart navigation system takes you along less congested roads while its automatic driving mode lets you enjoy the speed this car has to offer. Travelling at high speed, you think about what to have for dinner, as the app on your mobile phone generates a list of recommended recipes based on food you have available in your fridge. As you arrive your smart home turns on the balcony lights, the air conditioning in your living room, and the preset washing machine. Everything in your home is ready to welcome your return.

No need to picture this scenario in your imagination. At CES 2015 early this year, major companies went all out to implement concepts of IoT into our daily life in ways most familiar for users. Integration of software and hardware presented a variety of innovative applications that are no longer far from reality.

A bridge to IoT- Mobile wearable devicesThe rise and popularization of smartphones, as well as explosive innovation in wearable devices, have completely changed our living, signifying the advent of the era of mobile living. Wearable devices that feature sensing, communication, and computing functions are what many companies are vying to produce. From user self-management of basic health matters and home care to watching pets, companies are making strides in a wide range of applications. Wearable devices once considered dull in design are now displayed as quality boutique goods on the show floor. Noteworthy were the conventional clothing brand Guess and the crystal décor brand Swarovski coming out with wearable

products. No matter how powerful they are in terms of functionality, more innovative syntheses of old and new are expected.

Intelligent electric cars for the futureSmart cars were another highlight at the CES show this year. The upscale exhibitions from major car manufacturers offered visitors the illusion of visiting a car show. Most memorable was a test drive with five reporters riding the Audi auto-driving car equipped with the ADAS advanced driving assistance system travelling San Francisco to Las Vegas. During the 550-mile trip, the speed was as high as 70 mph. Except for the city-driving when control was handed to a human driver, the trip was handled by the car's auto-driving feature. Another highlight of the show was electric vehicles that use clean energy as their source of power. Volkswagen displayed its wireless charging technology, which claims as high of 90% conversion efficiency Toyota's battery-fueled car Mira coming out in 2017 is quite anticipated in the market.

Your smart houseTelevisions featuring smart network connectivity are becoming the center of the automated home and network-enabled living, where you'll be able to handle and manage tasks large and small. The WEMO smart home living platform developed by Belkin links up various devices at home, bringing one more able homemaker standing ready on the side. He or she will have the temperature and humidity at home adjusted to a setting that is the most comfortable for families. It won't forget to turn on the balcony water sprinkling system as you scheduled. It reminds you of boiling water for tea. Remote control with switches is also possible if you forget to turn off the lights as you hurry to go to work. All of these touch designs are centered around enabling an easy and enjoyable lifestyle for users.

Brand advertising wins on the unexpectedThe entire show space for this CES show was like an arena filled with future technologies. Attracting visitors' attention was a major challenge for every brand marketer. In 2014, Delta's consumer brands Innergie and Vivitek joined together for the first time to participate in this once-a-year global consumer electronics show. The strategy of "A brand of Delta" was announced to better understand consumers' needs, develop innovative energy-saving consumer applications, and extend core technical capabilities to consumer applications. Through contacts with a wide base of consumers, Delta strives to instill its image as a leading brand of industrial products. In 2015, it will take a step further in incorporating consumer products into its brand for a

greater synergy as it continues the smart green house theme unveiled at Computex. A scenario-based exhibition based on the popular theme of IoT will be featured to draw worldwide media coverage.

Placing advertising where crowds pass is an important way of enhancing awareness of the brand. Though costly, it is a worthwhile move for rising Chinese companies. More than 1,200 exhibitors this year were from China, representing one-fourth of all participating companies. Hisense spent a large amount of money on billboards on the monorail body and outer wall of the south exhibition hall, stating their brand's ambition via advertising that was difficult to ignore. A simple and easy-to-remember slogan offers a fast way for consumers to know a brand message. Huawei, a major tech company from China, is a noteworthy example. It used white as a base color to make its red corporate color more prominent. Its corporate slogan of "Make It Possible" offered a simple and direct way to state the commitments of its brand.

Seeing with eyes might not be enough, the user experience is also important. Many companies do not hesitate to devote a large amount of money to experience-based events, where an area is available to showcase the most advanced technology applications from these companies. To exhibit their newest sensor technology, Intel built an interactive wall with snow, where you can immerse yourself in snowy artic scenery and wave your hand.

Of course, most important is a return to the product itself. Given the emphasis on consumer experience, the best way to advertise is to have the product speak for itself. With a limit on technological breakthroughs, creat ing added value that touches users is the key to design and advertising for future products.

• Huawei of China conveys the spirit of its brand via a simple and clear design for its exhibition booth

• An interactive snow wall at Intel booth creates a pleasant user experience

Microgrid Enabling TechnologiesMicrogrids are a global phenomenon, it is really just a small-scale version of the traditional electricity utility grid. Like today's power grid, microgrids include generation facilities, distribution lines, and voltage regulators. They can be networked with one another (and the central grid) in order to boost capacity, efficiency, and reliability, or they can function as autonomous islands of power during times of emergency or to respond to real-time market conditions.

Considering that without distributed generator the vast majority of microgrids would not exist, distributed generator assets are the foundation of any such network. Navigant Research forecasts the Total Annual Distributed Generation Vendor Revenue will be USD1,800M in 2014 and reach USD 9,600M in 2023. Navigant Research identifies 7 main categories in the Total Annual Distributed Generation market including Fossil Fuel Distributed Generator, Renewables, Energy Storage, Combined Heat and Power, Inverters, Software, and Distribution Hardware & others.

E-vehicles on the rise in China, finds KPMG surveyDue to increased environmental focus and regulations, electronic vehicles are expected to comprise 10 percent of market share for new car sales in China by 2025, finds from the KPMG's annual automotive survey.

KPMG China says: "China's government and automotive industry have high hopes that e-vehicles will signal a new era in the world's fastest growing car market. Not content with catching up with more established players in traditional combustion engine technology, China aspires to leapfrog rivals to become the premier market for e-mobility."

"Rising air pollution in China, fuel costs, strict emission standards, and rapid urbanization will ensure the huge potential for electric cars is eventually realized, although this will require further innovation and disruption across the automotive eco-system, and help from regulations and tax incentives." Concluded by KPMG China.

Forecast Analysis: Devices, Worldwide, 4Q14 UpdateAccording to the Gartner’s forecast for the devices (PC, Tablet, and Mobile phone) in 2014 Q4, the shipments in 2015 will reach 321M for PC, 242M for Tablet, and 1,906M for Mobile phone. The CAGR between 2013~2018 will be 1.9% for PC, 8.0% for Tablet, and 2.8% for Mobile phone.

Gartner highlights some key findings: • Unit growth for all devices in 2015 was revised down from 5.2% in the 3Q14 forecast to 3.9% in the 4Q14

forecast, mainly due to a slowdown in demand for basic ultramobile tablets. • The life cycles of tablets are being extended as vendors struggle to innovate and OS updates keep devices

current. This means that, by 2018, the basic and utility ultramobile tablet market will no longer exceed the PC market in unit terms.

• In 2015, the professional desk-based PC market will decline by 5.5%. The PC market no longer needs to rely on extended XP migration to maintain its stabilization, as it will see growth in both consumer and business notebook markets.

• The growth of Android in the basic smartphone market will result in further polarization of smartphone price points across both basic and premium markets over 2015.

Mr. Bruce Cheng, the founder cum honorary chairman of Delta Electronics, has always been grateful to the good teachers he encountered from National Taichung First Senior High School and National Cheng Kung University, who had changed his entire life. He has always wanted to give back to the society, allowing more people to be inspired by good teachers. Two years ago, with referral from Professor Victor Zue, he got to know the series of MITx courses launched on edX platform by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has created deep influence to the world. Since then, he hopes to introduce this system into Taiwan.

Mr. Cheng and Perng Tsong-Ping, former president of Yuan Ze University and professor in National Tsing Hua University, happen to be the conveners of the Ministry of Education's white paper for talent cultivation in the technical and vocational education group. Mr. Cheng was moved by the passion Perng Tsong-Ping has in education, and hence cordially invited President Perng to be the project director of DeltaMOOCx. This platform focuses on the long-neglected technical and vocational education, and starts off with technological universities' automation curriculum. It combines basic science of senior high and vocational schools, and aims to assist in building a close industry-academia link, bringing greater competitive advantages to Taiwan's industry.

With the great efforts of President Perng, Delta Foundation, together with National Taipei University of Technology, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, set up "Automation curriculum alliance for universities of science and technology", and is expected to

launch more than twenty online courses within three years. With the laboratories and automation equipment set up or subsidized by IABG in the three universities, it hopes to build a seamless integration with the industry for the students. The first two courses offered by universities of science and technology, "Microcomputer Principles and Applications" and "Digital Signal Processor", were launched in March 2, 2015, and had received positive responses. Within two weeks, these one-hour courses received more than 200 registrations, and 2,000 people had browsed the videos.

Make use of big data, giving a new look to education with technologyTo continue improving the browsing quality of digital courses, DeltaMOOCx not only provides the teachers with high-end hardware such as WX21i ultra short-throw projector and interactive whiteboard for recording, but also entrusted ELTA TV to produce high-definition videos in the studios and laboratories, making the content of these 10 to 15 minutes per unit courses attractive and easy to understand. The platform is also equipped with tracking mechanisms such as online test, learning history, virtual discussion rooms, etc., which then makes use of big data to analyze the students' time spent on the courses, question-answering pattern, understanding barriers, elective preferences, etc. This allows teachers to customize learning recommendations for the students in the future, realizing autonomous and flipped learning through community collaboration.

Join the wave of MOOCx that swept the worldWith the success of MOOCx in 2012, it has become a trend for such platforms to digitize teaching materials and put them online for users to share and use for free. It also emphasizes on interactive learning and exchange, making knowledge sharing more in-depth and widespread. At present, it has attracted the world's top schools to offer courses, and in the past three years, these platforms have each accumulated more than millions to tens of millions of registered members. The newly started DeltaMOOCx platform hopes to start off from Taiwan, building a leading platform in the Chinese speaking countries, narrowing education-jobs gaps, and transferring practical knowledge. Interested partners are welcome to share and register (http://deltamoocx.net/) and ride this open course wave.

• Automation related courses officially launched on DeltaMOOCx platform in March

Enlightenment of shoe repairing< Text by Wim Chang/ Delta Electronics Foundation >

While I was busy with the "Run for Water, Water for Run" exhibition last year, the sole of my shoes worn for years was unexpectedly split in two. Without the habit of preparing new dresses, I would have only a pair of red sneakers for wearing out. At the moment, I could not but urgently look for a shoe repair cobbler in the surrounding area for mending the sole as soon as possible.

Several blocks away from the exhibition ground, I found a shoe repair shop. The master cobbler examined carefully the shoes and refused to mend them. His reason was simple: "The repair costs the price as buying new shoes." Such an answer pulled me up short. I wondered, if every master cobbler were of such a character advising the clients to buy new shoes, how could these shoe repair shops sustain? In hope of prolonging the life of an object, I didn't give up and kept looking for another shoe repair shop. Very soon I found one in the alley nearby. Behind the young master were repaired bags and luggage. The shoe repair should not be difficult for him. He quoted 1,000NTD and said transferring the needed item would take three days, then he could give this pair of worn-out shoes a whole new life.

I learned two things. First, now between "repair" and "buying new one", the latter option seemed more common and well received. When I found the sole of shoes broken, almost all colleagues suggested me to buy new ones. Repairing shoes is obviously considered as bothersome. Second, though shoe repair seems to be an outdated business, two shops can continue to operate in a distance of some alleys. That means, a steady market sustaining such an industry still exists.

This reminds me the "Repair Café", which has been popular in western countries for a while (Repair Café in Holland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5fHAnDFQ4A). It evidently saw people's needs for the genuineness. Now there are over 400 café globally with a resident repair master providing all kinds of free or charged repair service: from CD player, umbrella skeleton, stuffy doll to diploma, almost everything imaginable can be repaired.

In Taiwan, for example, at Dapeng New Village in Xindian District of New Taipei City, repair masters are regularly invited to the community for providing repair service to the residents. In last October, the first Repair Café, or beer house, debuted in Zhongshan District of Taipei City. Anyway, it is a place allowing people to order a drink and wait for the repair assistance.

If you have long time not asked people to repair your objects, probably you can choose one or two appliances as a try and let your new year have a green start, as the beginning of a sustainable life.

Since the extravagant feasting with family and friends during Chines New Year always gains me 2 more kilos of weight while back to work, this year, before returning to Taiwan, I had planned to be more active, more healthy and walk around more.

Most relatives and friends live in the districts of Taipei County, so we shuttled everyday between different families for paying New Year visits. By this chance, we headed on foot, which was helpful for the digestion and allowed us to enjoy strolling on the street. Xiangshan (象山 ) in Taipei is an important base for Taipei 101 New Year firework show. One day morning, I arranged a hiking to Xiangshan. Probably due to the Spring Festival, there were not many people going up the mountain. The air was very fresh and the weather was luckily a cool cloudy day. Though it's not difficult to climb the ladder all along, some parts of the route were steep. I was bathed in sweat while reaching the peak. In addition to the beautiful overlook of Taipei 101 building, we were also very excited to see many colorful butterflies flying around.

The vegetables we had in Taipei were all from my aunt cultivating herself. So we also hoped to seize the chance to visit her vegetable garden. It was bigger than I thought, where she farmed many unknown plants as well as raised chickens, ducks and geese. My aunt said they had learned a lot during the course of planting vegetables; she could even give a lecture on how to collect the bamboo shoots. For letting me experience the farmer life, the job of pulling up the radish was handed to me!

We scheduled a trip to Yilan for our last three days in Taiwan. Our friends were surprised to hear that we planned not to drive nor rent a car nor motorcycle on the spot. They reminded us again and again the bus system in Yilan was not as convenient as in Taipei and it could be very difficult to move without our own transport. I was a little worried on this in the first place. But after studying the map and train schedule of Yilan, I found the interval trains could help to solve the long distance transport problem. So I didn't get worried anymore. At the worst we walk!

On the first day of our trip to Yilan, we got off the train at Toucheng (頭城 ). We visited the featured old street, which had land temples at both end and was not commercial at all. That day happened to be the 104 anniversary of Toucheng City God Temple. We stayed for a while, watched the parade of deities, walked to Lanyang Museum and then took the free bus heading directly to Jiaoxi!

The hot springs in Jiaoxi were really great. We went to the park morning and afternoon for a foot bath until the whole body sweated. In the evening we returned back to the hotel for taking a hot springs spa, relieving all the fatigue and calf aching of the trip. The hotel offered moreover free bicycle rentals, allowing us to look for delicacies in the alleys!

While planning our trip to Yilan, the only must-visit site was Fushan Botanical Garden. As it has the quota of 500 visitors per day, we booked online one month in advance. We were lucky to have to chance to visit this magnificent mountain. Along the mountain road, we saw the Taiwan cherry blossoms and different gradations of greenness full of mountain, which made people completely relaxed, carefree and joyful. I was happy to see all visitors striving for protecting the environment as they prepared the snacks and water bottle by themselves as well as took all the trash with them downhill.

During the yearly family visit, it is unavoidable to enjoy the Taiwanese gastronomic delights. But as long as we walk and move a lot, the New Year vacation can be not only fulfilling but healthy!

"Run for Water, Water for Run" special exhibition for redisplay in wake of recent water shortage in Taiwan< Text by Pamela Huang/ Delta Electronics Foundation >

In face of the largest scale of draught in a decade, many counties have enforced limitation on supply of water according to varying time of day. Having shown long-term care about the issue of water resource and climate change, Delta Electronics Foundation received special invitation by National Development Council to host the "Run for Water, Water for Run" Environmental Education Exhibition again from February 27th to April 9th at the former headquarter of air force, where latest information on status of water supply and innovations from many countries on conservation of water were presented to remind more people and enterprises of a need to join the effort to save water.

Originally a response from Delta Electronics Foundation to the newly-released United Nations report on climate, the "Run for Water, Water for Run" exhibition held last year at Taipei Songshan Cultural Park featured presentations with rich humanistic interpretations that were transformed from incorporating worldwide scientific forecasts with cases of Taiwan's adjustment on draught. The 26-day exhibition attracted 37,000 visitors and received highly-positive recognitions from co-recipients of 2007 Nobel Prize on Peace, including Professor Donald J. Wuebbles and Director of Climate Office Dr. Wayne Higgins from US NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). During this re-hosted exhibition at the former air force headquarter, Premier Mao Chi-Kuo of the Executive Yuan also attended inauguration of the exhibition on February 27th to express his appreciation for the effort by Delta Electronics Foundation to raise awareness on scarcity of water resource.

The exhibition this time featured real-time information on status of water supply and knowledge of related policies. Also presented again included the previously well-known cases of Delta Electronics Foundation vice president Mr. Wim Chang having developed "Wim's bathroom" that managed to annually save an amount of water equivalent to that

from 288 fire-fighting trucks, as well as the "window farm" that managed to reduce the amount of water used for watering plants. Interactive projections featured at the exhibition aimed to present the concepts for "water footprint" as reflected in indirect consumption of various types of food, to offer useful ways for people to save water in their daily life. Before March 22nd, the exhibition will also feature a 3D documentary film on seas and ocean around Taiwan that will be played by the "3D movie bus for low-carbon actions" from the foundation at a designated

location as scheduled. For details regarding the exhibition and more tips on saving water, please visit the "Run for Water, Water for Run" exhibition website at http://waterforrun.blogspot.tw/.

Welcome the new and cherish the old - launching of "Delta's first flea market"< Text by DGC >

On February 6th, the second story corridor and conference room of Delta's Pudong headquarters were transformed into a bustling market, where "Delta's first flea market" was being held. The purpose of this event is to enrich the employees' spare time, promote interaction between employees, and find new owners for the "old stuffs", fulfilling the group's philosophy of "Smarter. Greener. Together." More than one month before the event, comprehensive preparatory work started, which soon received positive responses from many employees. Everybody dug out from their home school supplies, books, clothing, electrical appliance, toys, etc. that they no longer needed, waiting to show off their selling skills at the "flea market".

In that morning, the sellers began to set up their stores and couldn't wait to move their stuffs to the corridor and conference room. Within a short amount of time, "the market" was already crowded with people, and there were quite a number of goods to be sold. Look, there were so many stores, and those few tables would be counters for displaying their goods. A dazzling range of items were being sold, including electrical appliances, brand-name bags, ornaments, toys, and even Qipao costume. At 11 am, the "flea market" was officially open. Within a short while, continuous shouting of selling and bargaining could be heard.

Look, every store was filled with goods, and the way the "store owners" carried themselves, really made them look like professional sellers. Listen, in order to attract customers, "promoters" from each store shouted, "Quick, selling at low prices for high-priced goods, you'd regret for not getting them". There were also stores owners who shouted, "Don't miss it when you pass by, don't let the chance slip by", attracting a big group of customers rushing to the store and forming a long queue in a short amount of time. During intersession of the event, DGC's Vice Chairman, Mr. Jimmy Yiin, visited the flea market and chatted with the store owners. He also brought with him a precious item to be sold.

In just half an hour, half of the goods had been sold, which was so unbelievable. Many buyers and sellers chose "WeChat Alipay" payment method, replacing the traditional cash payment. With just a few clicks, money would be credited to the other party's account. At the donation counter, many people donated books and clothing for the needies, showing their care by playing a small part.

When the event ended, many employees were still reluctant to leave. They said, "This event is really meaningful and hope the company will organize more of these events in the future. Through actual personal practice and experience, it

not only builds up our interpersonal communication skills, but also cultivates our quality of taking joy in giving out and frugalness from environment-awareness, allowing us to experience the joy of creating values through labor. With the success of this event, we will continue to organize it in the future, to fully realize the objective of resources recycling, drive positive corporate culture, and actively unleash the 'positive energy' ".
