“It’s summertime, summertime, sum, sum, summer-

time!” Those were the first words of the 1958 Rock & Roll song, “Summertime,” written by Sherm Feller and Tom

Jameson, and sung by the The Jamies - Tom, his sister, Serena, Jeannie Ray and Arthur Blair. Oh what promises that song held! An entire summer of nothing to do but have fun with our friends! Ah, the thought of it makes me wax nostalgic. I was privileged enough to share some of that nostalgia with the folks who saw the After 6 Social Club show in March that I wrote. I’m just sorry I didn’t

include this song with the show’s musical numbers! But I digress. The real reason I mention summertime is that we have had a wave of the weather lately which puts us all in the mood for cold drinks, a pool to dip our feet in and steamy nights for cool showers. It would be silly for me to say I won’t miss the weather because I am

probably going to be experiencing a lot more of it even as I leave Florida for the nether lands of New York State. Yes, my friends and neighbors, I am getting ready to leave our Delray Villas and trek to the North where there will be other friends and neighbors to romp with in the glorious summer sun of the North American continent. GREAT, GREAT NEWS we have finalized our contract with AT&T which will start in 2016. Look for special meetings in the fall to help homeowners to understand and have all their questioned an-swered. Let’s not forget summer is upon us and we have

APRIL ASSOCIATION MEETING

The following is a synopsis of the salient points addressed at the Board Meeting. This is by no means an approved or com-plete copy of the minutes - these will be published to our web site after the next Board meeting in May. Since there is a mini-mal number of people who attend the meetings, here are some issues that have an impact on all members of our community.

Pat Lazaroff reported that the contracts for renovating the "C" Building have not yet been finalized. Diane Weiss reported that the last show on April 8th was the final show of the season. Approximately 234 people enjoyed the Fabulons. The box office will reopen in September for ticket sales to the Rec Assn annual Halloween function.

President Weiss read a copy of a letter that was sent to AT&T by our attorney negotiating the proposed new contract switching television service from Comcast to AT&T. Briefly, this letter contradicts the outlandish demands AT&T proposes which put Delray Villas Plat 4/5 at fault where sub contractors liability is con-cerned. President Weiss then reported he spoke with a AT&T representative by phone earlier, telling that person that we will walk away and cancel the con-tract. This afternoon, our counsel contacted him and said that AT&T has agreed to change their contract demands. Board members will meet with our attorney to review the changes. This matter needs to reach con-clusion so work can commence to make the transition from Comcast without any costly delay.

Work to resolve an asphalt problem on LaSalle Dr. and the 20% deposit proposal is still ongoing and will be further discussed at the May meeting.

Life Saving Information Vial of Life & Yellow Dot

In the event of an emergency can you remember all of your doctors, their telephone numbers, your medications and their strength and frequency? I know I can’t. But maybe this can help..

Vial of Life

Vial of Life is a form that you can fill out that provides emergency providers with information about you, your medical history, and your doctors’

telephone numbers and medications, dosage and fre-quency. After filling out the information, put it into a baggie with a Vial of Life Decal on it and put it on your refrigerator door. Then you place a Vial of Life Decal on your front door. In the event of an emer-gency, responders can get your medical information and that may save your life. To obtain a form and decals go on your computer to Vialoflife.com

Yellow Dot

The “Yellow Dot” program is the Vial of Life for your car. It gives information to emergency respond-ers quickly that can save your life. You fill informa-tion on the form and put it in the glove box. Then you place a yellow dot sticker on the driver side rear window. You can get a form and the yellow dot decal by contacting Carol Michalic 270-7211.

Here are some words to contemplate. They truly are worth repeating even if we have heard them before.

For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

Sharon’s Read submitted by SHARON O’HALLORAN

(continued from Page 7, column 1) Hey, it just occurred to me. Last month, I was talking to you about the shark tank. This month, it’s the

drunk tank. Maybe I should be visiting an aquarium right now, seeking material for next month. Or a World War II museum. Tank you very much.

went into the drunk tank 22 years ago today. Well, actually that’s not quite true. At least

it won’t be by the time you’re reading this. I’m

writing this column on April 15, and I went into the drunk tank on April 15, 1993. I guess I’m not being

politically correct, though. I should be saying rehabili-tation hospital. I like drunk tank better. You probably know I used to work for the Brockton Enterprise in Massachusetts. I’ve told you that before.

And you also probably know that I covered the courts a long time. Like I said, the time I want to tell you about was April 15, income tax day, 1993. For years previous to that, my tax returns went into the mail exactly on the April 15 deadline. This particular year, I filed early. I don’t know why. No reason. Probably Karma or some-

thing like that. That afternoon and several drinks later, I was due to cover a motions hearing of a well-known, female Brockton realtor who was accused of heading a drug ring. I sat in the jury box, pulled out my trusty re-porter’s notebook, clicked open a ball-point pen and sat poised to take notes. An hour and a half later, I glanced down at my notebook. I hadn’t written a damn thing. I left the courtroom and went straight to a pay phone on the wall. I called a hospital, made a reservation and then called my boss to say I wouldn’t be back from

court. The woman I made the reservation with on the phone, told me to drink normally between then and my arrival, they didn’t want me showing up with the DTs.

She said they’d have a bed ready for me at 6:30. I

asked if she could make that 7:30. She laughed and said OK. Then she made me promise to get a ride, not to drive to the hospital myself. I went back to the Genova. Meredith had left, but there was this other woman I often drank with, Mary. I asked Mary if she’d drive me to the rehab hospital in

my car and then return it to Brockton. She said sure. We had several drinks and left. Mary was involved in an accident on the way back to Brockton. Get this, a drunk driver smashed into her. Fortunately no one was injured. The drunk was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol. Mary was not. About 10 months later, I submitted a story for The Enterprise about my battle with the bottle and how I beat it. My boss said he liked the story, but questioned its timing. He wondered if 10 months was too soon to declare victory. I told him I wasn’t going back to being

a drunk and I haven’t.

Some Luck. By Jane Smiley Jane Smiley returns to the town of Denby, Iowa, the setting for her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Thou-sand Acres, to begin the story of Walter and Roseanna Langdon and their children, Frank, Joe, Mary Beth, Lillian, Henry and Claire. Some Luck begins in 1922. Walter Langdon has re-turned from the Great War and married Roseanna and bought a small farm. He and Roseanna are expecting their first child. As he walks the hedge that divides his land he knows that to choose farming is a gamble; but his father and grandfather have been farmers and they, too, have gambled in choosing to be farmers. Rose-anna’s parents are first generation immigrants from

Germany and still speak German. She is also Catholic and he is Protestant but she has decided to forgo her faith to marry outside of her religion. Each chapter of the book is a different year and within that chapter are the voices of all the Langdon’s,

including the children’s voices, even those of children

who are not yet talking but merely observing their new world. All of the children have different personalities and those differences will determine their lives as the book moves from year to year. Also within those years the family is impacted by what is happening in the world in which they live. The effects of the Great De-pression, the mechanization of farming as it moves from horse drawn plows to tractors and the changing political and world realities impact the lives of the Langdon family and their children. As the years pass the reader comes to know each of the characters and their inner thoughts and dreams. The voices are clear and well developed. The marriage of Walter and Rose-anna struggles on at times, with the clash of their per-sonalities, particularly when it comes to rearing of their oldest son. They struggle financially and spiritually to deal with hardships and loss, including the death of a child. Walter realizes that in many ways it is Rose-anna who holds the family together and it is her egg and butter business that help them survive the Depres-sion and drought that overtakes the land. ALLIANCE HAPPENING APRIL 2015 Captain Calise, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office

just returned from several weeks training at the FBI Academy. He told us that scam calls claiming to be from the IRS or Sheriff’s Office are being made. The calls

threaten to arrest the person called if payment is not made, sometimes within the hour. This type of call will never be made by anyone in the IRS or Sheriff’s Office.

There has been a rash of entries into homes by smashing the locks. A current scam is burglar alarm companies will install alarm systems but not activate them. They therefore know no alarm will go off when they enter the home. The captain suggested hiding valuables in places other than the obvious, which are top dresser drawers, under a mattress, etc. He also told us the new sub-station at the site of the old public library on West Atlantic Ave is now operational. Fire/Rescue Battalion Chief Rich Ellis told us the department recently held urban search and rescue drills for Fire/Rescue personnel from a wide area. They will have a course on what we should do when coming up on a Fire/Rescue vehicle in front of, on the side of or be-hind us on the road. More Fire/Rescue personnel are killed driving to or from a scene than from any other cause. Scott Solkoff from Solokoff Legal told us that in most situations family members cannot help us in a cri-sis without proper legal planning. Among the areas of concern is a Long Term Health Plan including provi-sions for decision making when we can no longer make these decisions for ourselves. Another is a Durable Power of Attorney designating whom we trust to make decisions regarding financial and certain other important matters. A Will ensures our assets will go to those peo-ple whom we wish to leave something. Our Featured speaker was Rebecca Caldwell, Execu-tive Director of the Palm Beach County Planning, Zon-ing and Building Department. This department is com-prised of six divisions with 260 employees. It provides expertise for the planning and regulation of land devel-opment and construction in client provision of facilities and services, prevent the overcrowding of land and fa-cilitate the adequate and efficient provision of transpor-tation, water, sewage, drainage, solid waste, parks, schools, and fire and police facilities. The plan provides a framework for land use and changes of land use and mechanisms and standards through which changes can occur. During fiscal 2014, the Building Division issued over 62,000 permits for construction valued at over one

billion dollars. and efficient provision of transportation, water, sewage, drainage, solid waste, parks, schools, and fire and police facilities. The plan provides a framework for land use and changes of land use and mechanisms and standards through which changes can occur. During fiscal 2014, the Building Division issued over 62,000 permits for construction valued at over one billion dollars. Also, the division performed over 131,000 inspections on permitted construction projects. The purpose of the Contractors Certification Division is to regulate contractors doing work in Palm Beach County. This division ensures contractors have the technical skills and business stability and knowledge to perform the work they are hired for. Some of the 49 trades are; General Contractor, Electrical, Plumbing, Roofing, Drywall, Painting and Swimming Pool Con-struction. Some of the warning signs that a tradesman is not properly licensed and vetted are; ads not including a license number, a large down payment requested be-fore work is begun and stating that it would be cheaper if the homeowner obtains the permit. Anyone hiring a contractor should ask to see the license, certificate of liability and workers compensation insurance. Among the responsibilities of the Palm Beach Construction Industries Licensing Board are; levying fines and sus-pending or revoking a contractor’s certification for a

violation of a rule or regulation. More information about the Palm Beach County Planning, Zoning and Building Department can be found at PBCGOV.COM/PZB.

(continued from page 7, 2nd column) For me this was especially true as I grew up in the Midwest where my mother’s family had farmed all the

way back to my great great grandparents, also German immigrants. My grandmother had six children, only five of them surviving, and all of them went different ways in life. Only one of them chose to remain in the small town where I spent a good part of my life and she chose to marry a farmer. Imagine my surprise when reading this book to come across the name of my fam-ily’s town in the chapter where Frank is taking the train

to Chicago and passing through the town of my child-hood. In fact, he is taking the same train I used to take from northern Illinois downstate to visit my grandpar-ents. So for me, this book has special meaning as it captures the pace of farm life and the hardships of gam-bling on farming as a way of life. For some the pace will be too slow and it will feel like ‘nothing is happen-

ing’ but isn’t that like life sometimes as the years go by

and families grow and change? The changes can be subtle within families at times even though the outside (continued on AD Page 2, column 1)

It includes a space for you to write your name(s) exactly as you would like it to appear in the holiday greetings, i.e. “ Joe and Jane Smith” or “John

Doe and Jane Jones.” Please submit before August 15

along with $3.00 to be included in the remaining two is-sues. Thank you.

(continued from page 8, 2nd, column) world is changing rapidly. Family farming is rapidly be-coming a thing of the past in this country with agribusi-ness buying up family farms. As Walter observes in the beginning of the book, it takes ‘some luck’ to be a farmer as your livelihood is in

the hands of nature and of God, if that is your belief. The book ends in 1953 and all of the older Langdon children are established in their lives. Frank and Lillian do not live in the Midwest anymore and only Joe remains on the farm. Henry has entered college and Claire is finishing high school. This is the first book in a series of three that will span 100 years in the life of this family and their children and grandchildren.
