• VMware View Persona ManagementPersona Management dynamically associates the user persona to stateless floating desktops. Administrators can easily deploy pools of lower cost stateless, floating desktops and allow users to maintain their designated settings between sessions.

• VMware ComposerVMware View Composer lets customers easily manage pools of “like” desktops by creating gold master images that share a common virtual disk. All cloned desktops linked to a master image can be patched or updated through VMware View Manager by simply updating the single master image, without affecting users’ settings, data or applications.

• VMware View ClientView Client enables access to centrally hosted virtual desktops from Windows PCs, Macs, thin clients, zero clients, iPads and Android-based clients. View Client with Local Mode allows access to virtual desktops running on a local Windows-based endpoint regardless of network availability.

• VMware vShield EndpointOffloads and centralizes antivirus and anti-malware (AV) solutions, eliminating agent sprawl and AV storm issues while minimizing the risk of malware infection and simplifying AV administration in virtualized environments.

The Dell Solutions Laboratory — along with VMware — has spent over 50,000 man hours testing configurations to identify the right scenarios and develop stable and scalable solutions. Dell knows it’s critical for higher education institutions to have software that works correctly and meets the needs of students and staff. Six of the most frequently used software programs have undergone extensive testing and have been validated:• Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop,

Illustrator, Premiere Pro CS5)• AutoDesk – AutoCAD 2DLT• Wolfram – Mathmatica 7• MathWorks – MATLAB• SAS• IBM – SPSS

How Was Testing Done?Testing was completed with VMware View (4.6) and Unidesk (1.4). As noted in the previous table, applications listed completed 10 testing cycles without issue. To maintain integrity and ensure results were not affected by system caching, each testing cycle included the creation of unique files with unique images and graphs imported.

Applications were tested on the following platforms: Dell OptiPlex 980 running Win7; Dell FX170 running WES; Dell Latitude 13 running Windows XP; Dell Adamo 13 running Win7; iPad2 running iOS 4.3; Motorola Xoom running Android 3.0 with flash upgrade; iPhone running iOS 4.3; iMac and Macbook running OSX Lion 10.7.1.

Test FindingsWhile most applications worked seamlessly during testing, the Dell Solutions Laboratory observed the following:

• When the Base OS was initially installed, virtual machines were created for all three major operating systems (Win764, Win7x86, XP) without issues. The environment is stable and well managed. All virtual machines function as expected and are accessible from all

major OS revisions (Win7, WinXP, iOS, Android 3.0, OSX Lion). Base testing in this step included functionality testing on browser, file management structure and importing/exporting. All work as expected.

• When testing AutoCad 2012, the only testing performed was in the 2D format. When the application was opened, it required switching to a standard driver from a Heidi module. This is likely a result of 3D support not yet being available for virtual environments on the application.

• If running SAS and SPSS, Dell suggests running with no less than 3GB of RAM.

• Establishing VMs through VMware View/Unidesk was very user friendly for the typical IT manager. Compared to what is available in the industry, VMware View/Unidesk is simple enough that it reduces the necessity of training and management of the infrastructure. Application and desktop functionality works as expected on all levels.

• VMware View 4.6 was tested with and without Unidesk 1.4, and there wasn’t a measurable performance difference between the two architectures.
