The Paediatric Dial-A-Rate giving set is fully pump compatible with standard infusion pumps and has kink proof tubing in the end extension. The precision flow regulator (5 – 250ml/hour range) provides greater accuracy at lower flow rates.

When using as a gravity fed infusion, using the precision flow regulator allows accurate flow control, 5 to 250ml/hr range. Provides immediate control of flow rate unlike the roller valve.

When using an infusion pump, the precision flow regulator needs to be in the fully open position.

Infusion


A silicone luer-activated valve for use on any female luer lock. The surface is swabable so no capping is required in normal use.

If fluids are to be administrated for a longer period of time when there is a high likelihood of needing to move the patient then it is good practice to insert a needle free valve onto the end extension where it joins to the rest of the giving set. This seals the end extension when disconnecting and helps maintain sterility.

Basic Principles of Bandaging3 Check and change regularly to make sure there

are no complications such as pressure sores.

3 Always attempt to include a padding layer (such as Orthowrap) to provide comfort.

3 Never mistake firmness for tightness to keep a bandage on.

Standard bandaging formulaInitial Layer – use a dressing such as Melolin or Allevyn. The type used depends on the nature of the wound.

Primary Layer – padding e.g. Orthowrap or Cotton Wool. This layer should be placed rather than stretched or pulled tight.

Secondary Layer – conforming for strength, contouring and security use Select Conforming Bandage.

Tertiary Layer – for protection, conforming and strength use Select Cohesives.

Aftercare is the most important aspect that can prevent complications

3 Bandaging should be checked twice daily to ensure it isn’t too uncomfortable or too tight.

3 It should be checked for any odour, oedema (fluid build up under the skin), discharge, skin irritation or wetness from the wound or external factors.

3 It is extremely important that the dressing does not become soiled or wet from environmental factors e.g. water, urine, mud. The bandage should be covered with something waterproof before the animal is taken outside.

3 The animal should not be allowed to chew at the bandage and the use of a neck collar should prevent this.

Cleaning & Inspection

Pre-cleaning Ultrasonic Cleaning21 3

Begin the washing process within 10 minutes of finishing surgery

Keep contaminated instruments moist to prevent bioburden hardening onto your instruments

If you are just too busy, use an enzymatic, post-surgical wetting agent to safely start the cleaning process

Instruments must be processed within 24hrs following application

Wash instruments with a neutral pH instrument cleaner. The use of hand scrub solutions can cause spotting and corrosion

Using an instrument cleaning brush, brush outwards from serrations and hinges

Rinse thoroughly When cleaning the instruments,

check them over for cracks, broken tips, faulty ratchets, missing screws and springs, worn jaws and missing inserts

The use of instrument stain removers will remove mineral staining, rust, pitting and corrosion from stainless steel

Place instruments in an ultrasonic machine for 10 – 20 minutes using a neutral pH solution

Ultrasonic machines clean 16 times more thoroughly than hand washing alone

Remember not to overload the machine

Rinsing & Drying

After cleaning in the ultrasonic machine, rinse instruments with clean or distilled water

Place all instruments on a towel with ratchets open, blotting off any excess water with a towel

Leaving instruments to air dry will cause water spots and minor rusting

Once dry, spray the open instruments with lubricant on hinges and joints

Surgical instrument lubricants are water based, avoid using mineral or silicone based lubricants as these interfere with steam sterilisation

Sterilise all instruments with the hinges and ratchets in the open position to allow full steam penetration, preventing cracking of the hinge area

Place heavier instruments on the bottom shelves and lighter more delicate instruments on the top

Do not stack sterilisation pouches on top of one another during sterilisation

Use a perforated tray for effective steam penetration
