Body Image and Wellbeing Education in Primary SchoolsDr Zali Yager, Senior Lecturer, College of Education, Victoria University

Body image is one of the main concerns among boys and girls today. Primary schools are in a unique position to influence the body image of children before issues arise. This engaging presentation will focus on a range of evidence based practical lesson ideas aimed towards improving body image in young children. Important actions that teachers and schools can take towards adopting a Health Promoting Schools approach to promoting positive body image and improving wellbeing will also be outlined.

Dr Zali Yager has research expertise in the school-based promotion of positive body image. She has evaluated programs designed to improve body image, and prepared teachers to be able to incorporate these resources into their class and school. Zali recently spent a year at the Centre for Appearance Research at the University of the West of England as a Leverhulme Postdoctoral Fellow, and has been the co-chair of the Body Image and Prevention Special Interest Group at the Academy for Eating Disorders (2010-2013). Zali has previously served on the Board of ACHPER Victoria and is a strong advocate for the teaching profession.

Primary School Physical Education: Under-Prioritised And Our Children Pay The Price Prof Dick Telford, AM PhD, High Performance Coach, Athletics Australia

A physically literate child possesses the competence, confidence and motivation to enjoy physical recreation and sport; and inadequate physical literacy creates increased risk to psychological, social and physical well-being. The Australian Lifestyle of our Kids (LOOK) study is the most comprehensive, randomised controlled trial of primary school physical education conducted to date world-wide.

Professor Richard Telford was Australia’s first full time sports scientist and a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation. He currently coaches Australia’s two best marathon runners, and some of our emerging middle distance runners. He is also Research Director of the Lifestyle of our Kids (LOOK) project through his Professorial appointments at the University of Canberra and the Australian National University. This project concentrates on the effect of lifestyle, particularly physical activity, sport and physical education, on the development and well-being of our children.

He is a Fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and Sports Medicine Australia; awarded an Order of Australia in 1992; and in 2014 he was named Australian Athletics Coach of the Year and inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame.

The conference has been designed to provide all participants the opportunity to connect with likeminded HPE teachers and create new networks for collaboration and support. Be inspired – join our community and come away with strategies to deliver dynamic Health and Physical Education programs.

This session will show you the basics of how this amazing program can be used in your class, and new features that will challenge you to further enhance the assessment and the feedback you can provide to your students.

B7 Have a clumsy kid in class? Why it might matter more than you think Jackie Williams, Victoria UniversityChildren who are clumsy have often just been considered to be poor at sport. They might simply be considered to fall at the lower end of the normal developmental spectrum. Little consideration is given to how their poor motor skills may impact other aspects of their education and development. Approximately 1 in every 20 children will meet the criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD; sometimes termed Dyspraxia). These children take longer to acquire skills and perform them less accurately, with this impairment impacting significantly on their daily living. This session will discuss what DCD is, the impact of DCD on education, self-esteem, health and long-term physical activity levels and provide resources and tools to help you, as educators, identify and aid these children.

ELECTIVE SESSION C: 2.15 – 3.30pm

C1 Aquatics in the Primary School (Prac)Loretta Konjarski, Victoria University and Kate Simpson, Life Saving VictoriaPrimary Physical Education aquatic education classes are challenging at the best of times… no bus money, not enough allocated class time, not enough qualified staff! How do you create an aquatic education program where all students are engaged and moving, everyone is challenged and everyone is having fun? We may not have the definitive answers but we can show you some ways to make your aquatic education classes engaging and appropriate for all ability levels. We will give examples of fun swimming skills and water safety education. Come and join us in this interactive (and wet!) workshop - be prepared to be challenged! NOTE: This is a practical, in pool, session.

C2 The feasibility of the ‘Motor Skill Obstacle Course’ (Prac)Natalie Lander, Deakin UniversityChildren who have acquired Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are more likely to develop into fit and ac-tive adolescents, with a flow on affect to a healthy and active lifestyle. The ability to authentically and reliably assess FMS within Physical Education and to provide specific teaching and learning opportunities is critical. This evidenced based workshop will demonstrate the Canadian agility and movement skill assessment (CAMSA) as a feasible measure of FMS and show how you can use this to link your assessment to your instruction, as well as improving your confidence in assessment of FMS.

C3 Net / Wall Games (Prac)Tim Buzzard and Nathan Ellsworthy, Victoria UniversityGame sense is a student-centred, instructional approach focusing on the tactical and decision making development of players. The purpose of this practical session is to introduce the game sense approach, specific to teaching net/wall games. In this session, participants will be presented with a variety of constraints and modifications to playing conditions, emphasising the tactical and decision making development for net/wall games, while maximising enjoyment and participation for primary school students.

C4 Whole of School Health and Physical Education Steve Crowe, Pearcedale Primary SchoolDespite overwhelming evidence that increased physical activity significantly enhances academic performance, getting classroom teachers enthusiastic and taking an active involvement in a whole school approach to Health and Physical Education is still a significant challenge. The question is why? Through the experiences of a practising PE/Classroom teacher, this workshop will address this question by highlighting challenges teachers encounter in schools. Attendees will actively participate in collaborating, generating and sharing ideas and initiatives to support a successful whole school approach to PE.

C5 Addressing Body Esteem in Primary Schools Amberley Laverick, Butterfly FoundationAustralian research has found that by the age of 4, children have developed quite a strong weight bias – fat is bad, thin is good. With a focus on Primary aged children, this workshop aims to challenge these preconceived ideas of health by examining commonly used language around weight, size and shape. Included will be discussion around appearance based teasing, building resilience, the impact of body dissatisfaction and how to shift the focus to what is most important, participation in all aspects of school life and supporting one another.

C6 Amplify Your Teaching Sean de Morton, Balwyn North Primary SchoolThis session will give you some fun, vibrant and innovative ICT tools to AMPLIFY YOUR TEACHING and increase student engagement in your Physical Education sessions. You will gain an increased understanding of explicit learning intentions, success criteria and challenge activities and their importance in shaping your Physical Education classroom.

C7 Top 10 PE Games and Activities (Prac)Mark Collard, PlaymeoA practical, interactive session which will present the ten most popular PE games and activities as featured on Playmeo, the world’s largest online database of PE Games. Emphasis on outrageously fun, highly interactive and very simple activities most of which do not require equipment and appeal to all ages. Mark will present all of the activities and discuss how they can be easily integrated into your classes to not only warm-up your students, and generate energy, but develop critical interpersonal skills as required by the new Victorian curriculum.
