1. Executive summary
The outreach activities of the AQUACOSM project are focused both on the academic and industrial sectors as well as the general public. The main goals are to inform the scientific and industrial community about the TA opportunities and the project’s activities and also to promote aquatic research to the general public.
The website of the project is the main communication portal with more than 24,000 unique visitors between July 2018 and November 2019. Also, the social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and ResearchGate were used for the distribution of the project’s news and activities and had a significant increase in their impact and audience since the previous reporting period (January 2017 - June 2018).
Project partners have given oral and poster presentations to major international scientific meetings focused on marine as well as freshwater research also including industry interests, in Europe and globally. In addition, mesocosm-focused sessions and workshops were organised at major aquatic conferences (ASLO 2019 and SEFS 2019). Mesocosms, as research tool, as well as the project and the opportunities for students to participate as trainees in the TA experiments, were presented in various courses and seminars.
Finally, AQUACOSM partners have participated in 3 public events in Netherlands and Greece.

2. Main Report
The following dissemination activities cover the period from July 2019 to November 2019.
2.1. Social Media and Website
In order to reach as many people as possible from various disciplines, backgrounds and geographical areas, accounts in all major and relevant social media (Facebook, Twitter and ResearchGate) were created (Fig 21). These social platforms were used to post news, events and comments relevant to the project’s activities. Also, most posts include links to the project’s website where visitors can find more information.
Since the first reporting period (January 2017 to June 2018) the audience of the AQUACOSM social accounts has increased substantially. On Facebook, the page likes and followers have doubled while on Twitter and ResearchGate the followers have increased by 55% and 49% respectively.
As of the 20th of December 2019, the statistics of the social accounts are (numbers in parenthesis are from the previous reporting period - January 2017 to June 2018):
• Facebook: 199 (101) page likes, 215 (106) followers with more than 5,000 post “clicks” by Facebook users.
• Twitter: More than 100 tweets have been posted and 1205 (780) twitter users are following the AQUACOSM account.
• ResearchGate: AQUACOSM account in ResearchGate is being followed by 204 (137) users and has been read by 1633 (809) users.

Co-funded by the European Union D5.7 Second Report on Dissemination Activities
In addition, AQUACOSM project is coordinating two web portals, the www.aquacosm.eu and the www.mesocosm.eu in which the visitor can find information regarding the project and the mesocosm facilities around the world. During the here covered reporting period, the aquacosm.eu had 24,316 unique visitors, while the mesocosm.eu had 11,089.
2.2. Conferences, Seminars and Courses
To achieve a broad communication with the scientific community, the AQUACOSM project, as well as the scientific results from the mesocosm experiments, were presented in various international scientific meetings (conferences, workshops, etc.). Common poster and oral presentations have been produced (Fig 22). From July 2018 to November 2019 the project and its results were presented in 5 major international conferences (including ASLO, SEFS, SAME), and numerous national and academic meetings (Table 31).

Co-funded by the European Union D5.7 Second Report on Dissemination Activities
Complementary to conventional oral and poster presentations, in order to enhance the dissemination of the project during major scientific meetings, AQUACOSM partners organised specialised mesocosm-focused workshops and sessions at the major aquatic conferences of ASLO 2019 and SEFS 2019.
Special attention was paid to approach a wide geographic coverage and multidisciplinary audience. In fact, AQUACOSM was presented in scientific meetings for both marine and freshwater sciences (e.g. ASLO, iLTER, EGU, SEFS, ENVRIplus etc.) and with participating scientists from all over the world.
Furthermore, in order to promote the mesocosms, as a research tool to the next generation of scientists, as well as to present the AQUACOSM project and the opportunities that it offers to students to participate on mesocosm experiments, partners gave talks in the frame of various university courses and seminars. The audience was mainly PhD and MSc students from various postgraduate projects and courses such as the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Aquaculture, Environment and Society Plus (EMJMD ACES\ACES+) and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions funded ITN-ETN MixITiN project. A detailed list of the scientific meetings, seminars and courses in which AQUACOSM project was presented can be found in Appendix (Table 31).
2.3. Scientific Publications
The results from the experiments conducted in the frame of the project, as well as opinion and review articles, have been published in peer-reviewed journals. In total 12 articles have been produced during the reporting period, with 10 of them having an open-access status. A detailed list of the scientific publications produced by the project can be found in Appendix (Table 32).
2.4. Web publications, press, interviews, direct communication, public events etc
The AQUACOSM newsletters as well as the announcements regarding the 2019 and 2020 TA calls were directly forwarded, via emails, to a group of more than 500 aquatic scientists and representatives of public bodies and companies around the globe. In addition, the announcement of the 2019 TA call was distributed via several major scientific web portals such as ENVRIplus, EuroMarine Network, EurOceans, SIL, GLEON, etc.
Furthermore, in order to inform the scientific community and the general public about the AQUACOSM research activities and the progress of TA experiments, media articles describing individual 2018 and 2019 TA experiments are published on the project’s website (http://www.aquacosm.eu/news/) and social media accounts. Further web publications were posted on other websites and blogs (Table 3-3).
In order to engage directly with the general public, AQUACOSM partners are participating in public events related to science. At these events, partners presented aquatic research and especially mesocosms as research tool as well as the scope and the goals of the project. Also, the AQUACOSM App (developed in the framework of Task 5.4) is being demonstrated to the younger audience. In total the partners participated in 3 public events in Netherlands and Greece during the second reporting period.
