    On With the SnOW:

d!: What drew you to the role o Snow White?

GG: The writing. I wasnt looking to get on

another television series, but then I discov-

ered that TV is where all the great writershave gone. Every single script I read was

phenomenal but the one I was drawn to ar

above the others was Once Upon A Time.

d!: Best thing about playing her?

GG: Were not reinventing the story. Were

    illing in all the blanks.

d!: Can we expect anyLost-isms in the

    storytelling?

GG: Its a very diferent story but we use a very

similar ormula or storytelling. Were go-ing to give the audience all o the puzzle

piecesout o order and leave it to them

    to put it all together.

d!: Three Little Pigs or Jack and the Beanstalk?

GG: Jack. Hes such an adventurer.

    d!: Cinderella or Snow White?

GG: Snow White or sure. Shes a woodsy girl.

And shes a brunette. Shes the one I

responded to in that way. Thats what

you do when you are a little girlaskyoursel which one you look like

At rst glance, her lie looks enchanting. When I was little, I thought I was Alice in

Wonderland, Goodwin beams, noting thatshe wore the dress and everything. Shedoten instruct her mother come in her roomat varying intervals and say a certain lineGoodwin had prepared or her. She wouldntbelittle it and say, Oh, isnt that cute, shethinks shes Alice. She would come in and say

the line and leave. And I would go on withwhatever scene I had created with my dolls.

Goodwin was, in act, always encouragedby what she proudly calls her hippy-artsy-artsy amily in Memphis, Tennessee.

My ather was in the music business and Idid not realize that children [elsewhere] werenot raised being woken up by blasting rockn roll music, she refects with amusement,or having a mom that was not bothered by

nding that their child (Goodwins sister)had taken the trash and papier ma-

chd it in the middle o the bed-room. Instead o my sister getting

in trouble, we threw a party to cel-ebrate her artistic talents.

    Goodwin laughs. That was myhouse.

There just was never a ques-tion that I wanted to be an

actress, she says. Iremember loving be-ing in school plays andthen local productions. My parents said that,as long as you keepup your grades and aslong as you dont take

a paycheckbecauseI wasnt allowed to doanything that wouldmake me moneybecause I thinkthey elt that wouldchange my rela-tionship to itIcould always act.

And my motherwas encourag-ing, saying thatacting wasntgoing to be a

    backup job.

She said, You dont need to have a backuI you have a backup, youll back up.

And so, with her amilys blessing, tyoung girl rom Memphis ventured out inthe world, shined in university productioand eventually received honors or her peormance skills at Boston Universitys Colleo Fine Arts. That was 10 years ago. In justshort amount o time, Goodwin has becom

something o an anomaly in the showbuniversea young actress praised or boher beauty and her talents. Shes one thhas consistently received avorable reviewstelevision appearances rom Law & OrderEd, and dramatic movie roles in Mona LSmile and Walk the Line.

O course, theres Big Love, HBOs awarwinning polygamy saga with Bill PaxtoJeanne Tripplehorn and Chlo Sevignin which Goodwin played ingenue wiMargene, to such believable ends. The expsure led to eature roles in heart-warmers liHes Just Not That Into You and Somethi

Borrowed. It also solidied her as a soughater actress with girl-next-door charm.

But shes quick to point out that its hlove o good stories that infuences much her decision-making.

I was always on the high school summreading list, she reveals. I loved anythinby Jane Austen. I loved my Edith Whartoand Charles Dickens. I was so into that, inthose characters. I realized recently that theisnt any one genre I love. I just love exploing what makes other people tick. I had a rally disgustingly healthy upbringing in a realoving supporting amily so I just wanted

know what it was like or other people. Its downright un to hear Goodwin co

ess all this with such ervor. Shes relentlessocused, seems genuinely happy and peectly upbeat. I generally always know whI want, she goes on. I am not really usabout that. I am really competent in askinor those things.

She pauses to refect. Growing up, mmother always used to say, Never comprmise yourselyoure all you got.

Insights worthy o a princess. So whare the odds this air maiden will live happever ater? Pretty darn good.

Larry CrowneThis upliting love story is written ormaximum whimsy by Nia Vardalos(My Big Fat Greek Wedding) andis directed/acted or maximumcharm by Tom Hanks. No one couldmake a more eel-good movie inwhich unemployment, oreclosure, alcoholism and divorce make upthe plot. Hanks stars as a well-likedeight-time employee o the monthat a big box retailer. Because his lacko higher education (he was in theNavy or 20 years) limits his promotionopportunities, he is let go. Unableto nd another job and determinedto broaden his opportunities, heenrolls at a community college. Enterdisillusioned teacher Mercedes Tainot(Julia Roberts), who despairs that shehas no impact on her students livesand whose unhappy marriage hasdriven her to drink. Extra credit to the

casting director who assembled BryanCranston as Mercedes husband,George Takei as a sel-absorbedeconomics proessor, Pam Grier asMercedes sympathetic colleague,Cedric the Entertainer as Larrysencouraging neighbor and GuguMbatha-Raw as a young classmatewho gives Larry a makeover. This isnot a movie that wants to set theworld on re, but its heart is in theright place and humanistic comediesare at a premium, so we are happy tograde this on a curve. Rated PG-13.

BeginnersEwan McGregor stars in this obeatdrama as Oliver, a commitment-waryman who gets an unexpected lielesson rom his 75-year-old ather Hal(Christopher Plummer). Six monthsater the death o his wie o 45 years,he tells his son that he is gay. The lmfashes between Olivers childhoodand his relationship with his mother(who knew Hal was gay), the period inwhich Oliver and his ather navigateHals period o adjustment, and thetime ollowing Hals death, in which

Oliver begins a tentative relationshipwith a ree-spirited French actress(Mlanie Laurent) he meets at acostume party. Plummer, continuinghis late career renaissance, gives asuperb perormance without articeor sentimentality (the character isbased on director Mike Mills ownather). Perhaps the lms breakoutstar is Cosmo, Hals dog whom Olivertakes in. His thoughts, amusingand heartelt, are communicatedin subtitles, but this conceit is usedsparingly. Beginners embraces lie

and love with an upliting optimism.Rated R.

Water for ElephantsBased on Sara Gruens bestseller,Water for Elephants is Titanticundthe Big Top. Instead o the veneraGloria Stuart, we have Hal Holbrooas an aged circus hand who tells thstory o a Depression-era disaster spoken o in hushed tones. Insteado Jack and Rose, we have aspiringvet Jacob (Robert Pattinson) andcircus perormer Marlena (ReeseWitherspoon), star-crossed loverswho risk all to be together. Insteado Billy Zane, we have ChristophWaltz as August, Marlenas circusowner husband. He is a charismatiman, but torn by desperation overhis nancial straits and jealousy ovMarlena, who is driven into Jacobarms by Augusts cruelty towardhumans and beasts alike. Pattinsonis enough o an attraction or hisans, but Water for Elephants is su

to resonate with baby boomers whgrew up with Disneys Toby Tyler. Irunning away to join the circus stilirresistible childhood antasy? Watfor Elephants depicts a grittier andmore brutal hard knocks lie thanToby. But this ravishing melodrampopulated by colorul characters aanchored by its sincere love story, boasts a much more bittersweet abuoyant conclusion than Titanic. Sright up! Rated PG-13.

    Crazy, Stupid, Love

This rereshing raunch-ree romantcomedy is a downsized Love Actuwith only our subplots. Two othem make the movie. Steve Carein lovelorn Dan in Real Life mode, stars as Cal, a man whose world isrocked by his wies (Julianne Mooadmission o an aair and request a divorce. Ryan Gosling costars asJacob, a lounge lizard who takes tsel-pitying, vodka cranberry-drinkCal under his wing, gives him anextreme makeover and teaches himhow to be a player. But when Jacoalls or Hannah (Emma Stone), alawyer who resists his well-rehearslines, it is Cal who becomes thementor. Thats more than enoughright there, but then things get alittle crazy and a little stupid. Cals13-year-old son is obsessed with hbabysitter (Analeigh Tipton), whohersel has a crush on Cal. Amidsta cast o seasoned scene stealers(including Marisa Tomei as a one-night stand and Kevin Bacon as tother man), Gosling coolly ownsthe screen. His scenes with Carelland Stone are the best in the lm,

unorced and naturally unny becathey are true. Rated PG-13.

Where do you go creatively ater youve be-come a best-selling author and nabbed an Emmy

o a popular travel series? You just keep going,

apparently. Thats what Anthony Bourdain is do-

ing with this new Travel Channel outing, which,

at rst glance, looks downright captivating i

not inormative and educational. The lowdown:

Bourdain jetsets to a locale and only has 24-48

    hours to explore that destinationeverywhere

rom Singapore to Amsterdam and then some.

In every case, these are places where I either

did go, or would visit even when the cameras

are o, Bourdain muses. This is a refection owhat Ive learned over time. Its about telling a

story that viewers can re-create themselves.

Inside reports reveal that the series will be

robust and ast-paced. Sounds good to us. Its

all part o the curious evolution o Bourdains

vibrant legacy. Hes a 28-year vet o the

proessional kitchen experience and when he

published a memoir about lie in the culinary

lane back in 2000 (Kitchen Confdential), it

sparked deeper interest about what happens

behind the scenes. A Cooks Tour ollowed,

which somehow unleashed a smorgasbord oother noteworthy turnsmore culinary books,

an essay book and even a series o crime novels.

    Meanwhile, Bourdains other Travel Channel

show, No Reservations, has hit a seventh-season

milestone and the mans plate is ar rom empty.

He once quipped: Context and memory play

powerul roles in all the truly great meals in

ones lie. But the same can be said about all

    o Bourdains unorgettable adventures.

Dont be surprised iThe Layoveris picked up

or a second season. In the meantime, buckle

up. These should be memorable trips.Watch: Premieres Monday, November 21, 9/8 pm C
