"I see Modi's impact on ground and it is zero. This is because he is not an organised politician, and he sometimes doesn't know what he says. Soon after saying this, Salman went on to say. "I am not the correct personto be with, the way I am right now in this phase of my life," he says.On being asked, how he faces his exes in real life, the 47-year-oldbachelor said, "Some I ignore totally. I try and run away from them. Idon`t face them. I`m sure by that it would mean you cannot look mein the eye and all. But that`s not the point. The point is now you`resomewhere else. You have your own life. I don`t want that some-where in somebody else`s mind that thought about ex-boyfriend youknow". When asked about the much-talked about animosity betweenhim and Shah Rukh Khan and the hug that took place at the Iftaar par tyearlier this, Salman Khan said: "If I had crossed him and didn't ac-knowledge him it would have been wrong… I saw him sitting downthere and I moved and said salaam alaikum."When Karan Johar asked if he felt that is was the media that propa-gated this so-called war, Salman Khan said: "It was never a war … Itwas just two guys that got along fine and one night they didn't getalong and it was something that hur t me. "Theparty provides us with lawyerswhenever there is a case in thecourt." Kejriwal is seen as aundisputed leader among thiscommunity thanks to hisresistance to the Delhigovernment's plan to install aGPS device in all autos."After the electricity protest

only I started noticing[Kejriwal]. Earlier he was therebut still talking about issueslike corruption, which didn'tmake any sense to people likeus," says Ajit from ChiragDelhi's Jatav Mohalla. Theelectricity protest struck achord with people who werefeeling the biggest pinch. "Ihad a pending water bill ofseven thousand, which I paid. But that protest made sure thatsomeone is here to talk aboutthe problem that I was facingeveryday," says Savitri in

Sangam Vihar, where manyresidents have received nowater in 30 days.Kejriwal's bijli-paani (electricityand water) protests made him afamiliar face to lower middleand lower class households. His popularity until then, saysYogendra Yadav, "wasrestricted to only a sizablemiddle class populationbecause issues likecorruption resonates withmiddle class more." This earlysuccess around everydayneeds explains why the newly

released AAP manifestopromises a 50% rate cut inelectricity tariff if it comes topower.Kejriwal's other politicalconstituency has a similaraam aadmi quality: hissupport among the city'sautowallahs. "He is with us.He rallied with us, stayed withus but most importantly hestill helps us in whicheverlegal way possible," saysRaman Prasad, an auto wallahfrom Khanpur. "The partyprovides us with lawyerswhenever there is a case inthe court." Kejriwal is seen asa undisputed leader amongthis community thanks to hisresistance to the Delhigovernment's plan to install a

GPS device in all autos. But a year after his officialentry into politics, anddespite his best efforts,Kejriwal remains hampered bytwo significant burdens. One is the break from AnnaHazare, and theaccompanying suspicion ofexcess ambition. "Arvind'sproblem has been that he wastoo eager to come out of theAnna Shadow, and projectinghimself as the leader of themass movement," says ajournalist in Delhi who hasbeen observing Kejriwal sinceAnna Hazare started his firstindefinite fast at JantarMantar."He was with Anna and themovement, and then suddenlyhe is here asking for votes?"says Ajay Kumar inPatparganj who runs a teashop. "He had his politicalambition and he just usedAnna," says Karina, an MBAgraduate! who claims she hadbeen to ramleela maidan toshow her solidarity during themonthlong fast.Even those who support hispolitical avatar are takenaback by his ambition."It wasa good move that he stepped

into the electoral politicsbecause the Anna movementfor it's apolitical nature couldnever root out a problem likecorruption. But ArvindKejriwal looks like a man inhurry," says Sunil Bhai ofSocialist Front.Kejriwal's other problem is hisoutsider status. While manynow know his name, heremains an unfamiliarcommodity as a politician."What is his politicalideology? He is cashing inthe anti incumbency waveand making false promises,"claims A B Bardhan, veteranleftist leader of the CPI,comparing him to Mamatawho may be an outsider "but

before that she has beenaround for 20 years. it takesthat much time to build apolitical party."And if Kejriwal at least enjoyssome recognition, many of hiscandidates are outrightunfamiliar. As Bardhan pointsout, many candidates of AAPare barely known among theelectorates. Even though 25%voters of Krishna Nagar areMuslim, Ishrat Ali Ansari, theAAP candidate, willundoubtedly lose to BJP's chiefministerial candidate HarshVardhan. "Doctor Saab (HarshVardhan) has been here for last20 years. Of course we will votefor him," says Imtiyaz Khan, from Khureji, a Muslim ghettoin Krishna Nagar.Even Kejriwal's loyal middleclass constituency wonders ifhis clean outsider image willwork against him. "I'm notworried whether they will turncorrupt themselves but howmany people will want a partythat is outright against thecorruption? The peoplethemselves are corrupt. An anticorruption campaign excludesat least 60 percent of thevoter," says Ashok Rawat(name changed), a government

serviceman from INA.However doubtful the votersmaybe, everyone agrees thatArvind Kejriwal has finallyoffered Delhi voters a realchoice - a choice not to opt forthe same old two nationalparties."Is it possible for one man tochange everything in a day? Ifthings were this easy then whyno one spoke about themever?", asks Kunal Kumar, fromkhichripur, a slum in East Delhi. But despite his doubts, Kumarwill be voting for jhaadu: "Gavea chance to everyone. TheCongress is in the governmentand the BJP is in themunicipality. Why not give hima chance too?

Justice delayed: No hearing on plea for Bhopal gas relief in 3 years

Just days before the 29th anniversary of the Bhopal GasDisaster of 1984, news

came last Friday that no hearingtook place at the Supreme Cour ton a curative petition filed by thecentral government to rectify theflawed settlement of 1989, andno fur ther date had been fixed. The petition had been admittedby the apex cour t three yearsago, on December 3, 2010. Not asingle hearing has taken placesince then.Lost in a maze of litigation thatstretches from the SupremeCour t in Delhi to the MP highcour t in Jabalpur and down to thechief judic ia l magistrate inBhopal, survivors and familymembers of the worst ever in-dustrial disaster were baffled butresigned - they are exhausted andhopeless.Nasreen Bi, was just 25 yearsold when poisonous gases brokeout from the Union Carbide pesti-cide plant and drifted throughsleeping Bhopal on the night of2-3 December 1984. A grand-mother now, she feels betrayedby all."The big political par ties, thecour ts, the sarkari babus - theyare all unconcerned of our plight. We have survived till today byour own fate, though weakened

by the gas, and poor," she says, breathless due to compromisedlungs. In 1989, the Supreme Cour t had

approved a settlement betweenthe government and Union Car-bide that gave Rs 713 crore ($470million) as compensation to vic-

tims estimated at 3,000 dead andover 1 lakh injured. In the follow-ing 24 years the number of deadhas grown to nearly 20,000 and

number of those suffering dis-abilities to a staggering 5 lakh. The effect of the poisonous gaseswas becoming clearer as time

passed. The compensat ionneeded to be given to many timesmore than the original numbercounted. Under pressure from theharried survivors, the govern-ment moved the Supreme Cour tto review its order authorizing thesettlement of 1989, so that a bet-ter compensation could be givento all the survivors and kin of dead.Perhaps the government is pur-posely allowing the matter to dragon, speculates N D Jaiprakash, activist and a petitioner in sev-eral of the key Bhopal cases. "Butif that's the case, why is the Su-preme Cour t not pulling them upand getting on with the case?" heasks. There is similar disregardof the apex cour t's orders on theshocking neglect of the survivors'healthcare needs. Four teen yearsafter a petition had prayed forimprovement in healthcare, thecour t had ordered in August 2012the Indian Council of Medical Re-search (ICMR) and the state gov-ernment to computer ize a l lrecords of patients, carry out nec-essary research, issue health-books to all survivors and finalisea protocol for treatment."Neither the ICMR nor the State Gov-ernment have taken the necessarysteps to comply fully with all the di-rections of the Court," says AbdulJabbar, another petitioner.

NEW DELHI: Unregulated floating private armouries carryingcombatants of certain countries are a matter of concern and canhave serious security implications for the country includinginfiltration of terrorists that can lead to 26/11-type attacks, Navychief Admiral D K Joshi warned on Tuesday.

Addressing the annual Navy Day press conference, he alsosought a "reversal" of high risk areas for merchant ships plying inthe piracy prone zones, saying such an extension in these zones hasresulted in incidents such as the killing of four Indian fishermen byItalian marines near Kerala coast.

"Floating armoury is a matter of very serious concern. This isentirely unregulated... This has very serious security implicationsfor us including the infiltration of terrorists.

"...If there are unregulated arms and ammunition on a vessel, the existence of weapons is not known as also where guards aretransferring them and this could lead to such a situation on anybody'ssoil," Joshi said when asked if unregulated floating armouries canlead to a 26/11 attack.

The Navy chief was talking on the issue against the backdrop

of seizure of the American floating armoury MV Seaman Guard Ohiooff the coast of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

He said the government has also received reports about thepresence of "combatants from some countries who on a temporarybasis take up these employments and become private armed guards."

Asked if he meant that these combatants are from Pakistan,Joshi skirted a direct response, saying, "I am referring to what I amreferring to."

He said over the years, these armouries providing escort to themerchant vessels plying in piracy prone areas have become a "loose-knit structure" and the "unregulated manner these ships areoperating, there is no track of which ship is coming and whatguards it has, what arms does it have and where they aregoing."

He said like the merchant vessels operating under theInternational Maritime Organisation (IMO) framework, thesefloating armouries have to be brought under the regulationand all the littoral states must be aware of the identity of suchships, the number of weapons and guards present on them.

Test batting on Dhoni's mind ahead of ODIsIndia are usually short on practice and preparation

time in international cricket. MS Dhoni is usuallyphilosophical about it. There are only so many days

in a year, he seems to often suggest, and that he and hisplayers have to make the most of what they get. Indiahave landed in South Africa on Monday, and are due toplay their first international on Thursday, with only onetwo-day tour game to follow between the ODIs and Tests.

"I don't know if it [preparation time] is enough ornot but this is the only time we have," Dhoni said beforeleaving for South Africa. "We will try to have longpractice sessions in the first one or two days that wehave with us. We will have one light session before thematch, and that is how we will get ready for the ODIs.That is how much we have got, and we have to get thebest out of what we've got."

During the second of those long practice sessions, which India have to get the best out of, Dhoni seemedto have batted to his heart's content, properly againstthe India quicks, spinners and throwdowns from fieldingcoach Trevor Penney, and rashly against the low-qualitynet bowlers India had at their disposal. Just when youthought he was leaving, Dhoni padded up again. Behindhis net at the Wanderers stood coach Duncan Fletcher, and CM Dhananjay, the team's analyst, was asked tobring a camera.

The surprise came when the red Kookaburras werebrought out. Two days before the first ODI of the tour,Dhoni - a man who loves to stay in the present - spenthalf an hour doing exclusive Test-match practice, evenas others around him played the big hits. With nochange of ends and other such delays, you can face agood 10 overs in those 30 minutes. Fletcher remained inconstant conversation with Dhoni from behind the net.Dhananjay, who is a decent bowler himself if allowed tobowl from 18 yards, and Penney's throwdowns testedDhoni. At one point, as the ball began to lose someshine, Dhananjay applied a foreign substance to keep itnew.

It seemed to be an exercise in moving forward tocover some of the late movement, and after the end ofthe session you could hear Fletcher telling Dhoni, "Youcan also ride the swing and play it late." Dhoni's battingwas critical to India's success in the home Tests earlierthis year, but he has had a weakness against the movingquick ball when he plays with hard hands outside offand edges through. He has in the past said that that isthe way he plays and can't do much about it.

Not on this net session's evidence. At the veryleast, Dhoni is looking at his batting with much moreresponsibility now that he is the more experiencedbatsman in the side. He is possibly looking at himself asmore than the declaration batsman or the saviour on theodd occasion that has been.

However, this early Test preparation of Dhoni'scould have a bigger implication. It was not just Dhoni'sbatting in India that worked, but it was also the balancehis move up to No. 6 provided, with the extra spinnerdrafted in. There were no tired bowlers around, no softovers when the ball would become old and take slowturn. Three years ago, in Cape Town, when India hadthe upper hand in the second innings, their bowlers -playing a third back-to-back Test - lost their sting onday four, although you can't take away from JacquesKallis' genius that day.

You wondered, though, what if India had anallrounder, like Kallis himself, who could bowl a fewfresh overs then. Like the limited preparation time, Dhoniknows there is no proper allrounder in the country. Sohe combined with Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin tokind of contrive one. The natural question was, if hewould be able to do the same outside Asia. If he wouldbe confident enough to do so outside Asia. Beforeleaving Asia, Dhoni kept his cards close to his chest, but didn't rule out a move up to No. 6.

"Well it's something that we have to go there anddecide," Dhoni said. "We have to see the strength ofour batting line-up. And at the same time whether fourbowlers are good enough to get the opposition out. It'ssomething that we have to weigh out.

"In the last Test match also we played with four

bowlers, and Rohit [Sharma] was the one whobatted at No. 6. If you see at times five batsmenare not enough, even six are not enough. And ifyou see the last two Test matches, the No. 6batsman has had a lot of impact on the game. Wewill weigh how it is and then decide as to whether3-1 [bowling] combination is good enough or we

‘ MS DHONI'S HALF HOUR AGAINST THE RED BALL IN THE NETS, TWO DAYSAHEAD OF THE SOUTH AFRICA ODI SERIES, SUGGESTS HE IS THINKING HARDABOUT HIS TEST-MATCH TECHNIQUE AND TEAM COMBINATION

have to play with 3-2."A lot, of course, was going to depend on

how Dhoni feels about his batting in the ODIsand in the nets. If he is thinking of not letting "Idare not" wait upon "I would", unlike the cat i'the adage, he is at least spending as much timepreparing as he can.

CHARACTER, COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY:CM BLOGS ON NATIONAL SPORTS DAY

Dear Friends,Greetings to my fellow countrymen on National Spor ts Day! Onthis day we remember the legendary spor tsman Major DhyanChand, who mesmerized the world with the magic of his hockeystick and made India a force to reckon with in hockey. I alsocongratulate all the spor tspersons and coaches who would behonoured with the various spor ts awards this year!I am sure every one of us has a lot of memories attached withspor ts. We still remember the first time we held a cricket bat. Asyoungsters, how we wished that the frequency of the games pe-riod were exchanged with long classes on grammar, algebra orhistory! Did you not rejoice when India won a world cup or amedal? In my view, the three Cs that wonder fully blend with spor ts are-Character, Community and Country. All round character building is incomplete if spor ts are not a par tof our lives. With reference to spor ts I feel, With reference tospor ts I feel, the person who plays, shines. Without spor ts, therecannot be any spor tsmanship! Every spor t has something or theother to offer. It is a unique oppor tunity both to sharpen our skillsand fo r ou r pe rsona l i t y deve lopmen t . No wonder SwamiVivekananda once said, “You will be nearer to heaven throughfootball than through the study of the Gita.”We all live in a community and there are only few better ways tostrengthen community bonding than spor ts. It is a great levelerand a unifier- when we play in a team we are not concerned withthe caste, creed or community of our teammates. Neither doestheir economic status bother us. What matters is the victory of

our team. I have seen so many lifelong friendships that have origi-nated from the games field. We are blessed to see such kind of a wonder ful atmosphere ofoneness and social harmony during our Khel Mahakumbh. Cut-ting across all age groups and districts of Gujarat, the athletescompete in various spor ting events. Khel Mahakumbh 2012-2013witnessed a record par ticipation of lakhs of athletes. For thisyear ’s Khel Mahakumbh we are star ting a new Under-12 categorythat will enable us to tap young talent. The Government will alsobear the various expenses of the talented youngsters, which willhelp them pursue their spor ting dream in the years to come.A few years ago, we integrated specially abled athletes to par-ticipate in Khel Mahakumbh. The genesis of this happened whena group of young specially abled athletes who had won in a tour-nament in China came to meet me. I spent two hours with them, spoke to them…this touched my hear t. We decided to fur ther ourresolve to provide maximum oppor tunity to them so that they canshine on the field and that is when we decided to integrate them inKhel Mahakumbh. Thousands of specially abled athletes left KhelMahakumbh 2012-13 spellbound with their stellar per formance.Winning a medal or a cup is a great gif t to give to our country.Invariably, success on the games field becomes linked with na-tional pride. Spor ts also blends with culture when a nation hostsan impor tant spor ting tournament like the Olympics or a WorldCup that enables it to showcase its history to the entire world. Notto mention the boost to the economy and tourism due to suchevents. Thus, it is very impor tant to inculcate a spirit of spor ts and spor ts-manship espec ia l ly among our youth . Apar t f rom the Khe lMahakumbhs I talked about, Gujarat has set up a Spor ts Univer-sity, a unique initiative to harness spor ting talent from all across

the country. Fur thermore, every district will have a spor ts schoolto give an impetus to spor ts. By integrating spor ts with educa-tion, a lot can be achieved. As a par t of 150th bir th anniversarycelebrations of Swami Vivekananda, Vivekananda Yuva Kendraswere set up in every corner of Gujarat with an aim to promotespor ts. Among the other initiatives under its auspices, spor tskits were distributed to the youngsters.Yet, despite all these effor ts there is a lot we have to do. I noticethat due to academic pressures, the attendance on games field indecreasing. And if children are not studying, they are playinggames on their computers. This is a very big shor tcoming on ourpar t. As citizens, let us create the right atmosphere and providethe right oppor tunity so that every child goes out to play for sometime. Is it not better to hit a six or score a goal in a park nearbyrather than on the computer screen? Another good idea is to de-vote some time where the entire family comes together and playsa game together.I am aware that there are several spor ts players who are ex-tremely talented but they miss the bus due to financial and logis-tical constraints. As a Government, we are trying but I also seekyour help in this. What if corporates can come together set up acorpus so that budding spor tspersons can get constant world classtraining oppor tunities along with other facilities, with an aim thatIndia emerges with many medals in the future Olympics and otherspor ting tournaments? This can be a par t of their CSR. Likewise, our NRI friends who never shy away from helping their Mother-land can contribute in the same way or even by sponsoring tour-naments and helping create spor ting infrastructure in their vil-lages. CONSERVATIVESMISLEAD CANADIANSBY RE-ANNOUNCINGOLD NEWSThe Conservatives are continuing their pattern of misleading Ca-nadians by re-announcing measures on pre-paid credit cardsand gas pump accuracy that won’t even take effect until 2014.“If they truly cared about protecting consumers, these regula-tions would have taken effect months ago,” said NDP ConsumerAffairs Critic Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury). “It is downright wrongfor the Conservatives to give the impression that they’re givingconsumers a Christmas present when, in reality, it’s just a lumpof coal—Canadians will continue to be ripped off well into 2014.”Gas pump problems were exposed by an Ottawa Citizen investi-gation in 2008. Although the NDP immediately called for regula-tions and inspections, it took the Conservatives until March 2011to pass legislation to address fairness at the pumps, which theystill have not implemented.“Instead of taking action to protect consumers who are payingtaxes on phantom gasoline, the Conservatives wasted millionson ads to boost their failed Economic Action Plan,” said Thibeault.

On CTV's Question Period on Sunday, LiberalLeader Justin Trudeau was asked why hasn't hecalled up on the Prime Minister to resign over thesenate scandal and said the opposition should

continue to get more answers. He said Harper's resignationis a "is a very, very serious thing," and its much moreimportant to get to the bottom of the issues surroundingthe scandal. "Opposition leaders who call for the primeminister's resignation anytime something happens inOttawa begin to lose credibility," Trudeau said. "And whatI'm focused on right now is restoring the credibility ofParliament and of politicians in general for Canadians byemphasizing facts, by getting people to answer honestquestions, and to be less focussed on cover-up and morefocused on governing." He said if more information isrevealed, "it becomes clear that these allegations and theseinvestigations are grounded in the betrayal of trust ofCanadians towards their government or seems that it mightbe, then absolutely there will be a stronger call. But I thinkwe have to be very respectful of our democratic institutionsand our Parliament," reported CTV News. Question Period

last week surrounded the documents that were revealedby the RCMP that show PMO insiders that wereallegedly involved including Sen. Irving Gerstein Noneof the allegations are proved as yet. Harper has stuck tohis claim that he knew nothing about the $90,000cheque and the two people who are accused are Wrightand Duffy who are no longer part of the senate. He hasalso defended Gerstein in the past saying he is not partof the RCMP investigation. The Liberals want RCMP tolook into 12 staff members who were named in theaffidavit and continue to investigate, reported CTVNews. Just last week, the party bagged two byelectionridings and polls show Trudeau's support has gone up."…We're pleased with the kind of response we'regetting right across the country and I think there'sreason to be satisfied that the approach that we aretaking. Being positive, reaching out around substantiveissues and trusting Canadians with the truth and withhonesty is giving a certain amount of interest in theLiberal Party that hopefully will translate into votes in2015," he said on CTV's Question Period.

Auditor General ExposesConservative Failure to Ensure

Basic Safety for CanadiansThe Auditor General's (AG) 2013 Fall Repor t clearly confirmsthat the Conservative government has continued to fail Canadi-ans when it comes to ensuring basic safety measures, specifi-cally regarding rail and food safety, said Liberals today. "Canadi-ans would have thought that after the recent tainted meat scan-dals that occurred under this government, measures would havebeen put in place to ensure the safety of Canadians so that suchsituations could be avoided," said Liberal Health Critic, Hedy Fry."But the Auditor General found that Canadian Food InspectionAgency (CFIA) officials do not have enough time available todeliver proper quality verification and that they have been skip-ping follow-up procedures after a food recall; the Conservatives'solution to this 'lack of time' has been to cut $56 million fromCFIA's budget and lay off over 300 staff." In fact, the AuditorGeneral's 2013 Fall Repor t concludes that "even when the gov-ernment identifies a problem, it takes too long to develop andimplement solutions." The AG's global conclusions are worryingand shed light on this government's lack of commitment when itcomes to the basic safety of Canadians in communities acrossthe country. "Barely four months after the terrible Lac-Mégantictragedy, this AG repor t clearly demonstrates that the Conserva-tive government is failing to improve rail safety in Canada," saidLiberal Transpor t, Infrastructure, and Communities Critic, DavidMcGuinty. "It is deeply worrying to read about 'significant weak-nesses' the AG has identified in rail safety. In par ticular, the AGsays 'it is taking too long to resolve significant safety issues' andwe don't know if rail safety inspectors have the necessary skillsto do their job. Basic information on such impor tant data as thesections of tracks used for transporting dangerous goods and thecondition of railway bridges is missing. Canadians deserve agovernment that will act to protect their safety."

Ontario is proposing legislation that, if passed, would supportlong-term strategic infrastructure planning to build a strongereconomy that suppor ts more jobs and apprenticeship oppor-tunities. If passed, the proposed Infrastructure for Jobs andProsperity Act would require the province to regularly table along-term infrastructure plan in the legislature covering a pe-riod of at least 10 years. The proposed act also includes guid-ing principles to help planning align with demographic andeconomic trends to maximize the value of provincial infra-structure investments and promote innovation, competitive-ness, and job creation and training.Recognizing the province's need for skilled trade workers, theproposed legislation would also require the government to in-volve apprentices in the construction of cer tain provincial in-frastructure projects.Strengthening communities by suppor ting strategic growth ispar t of the Ontario government's plan to invest in people, buildmodern infrastructure, and suppor t a dynamic and innovativebusiness climate.

Liberals and Conservatives embrace Senate-style self-policingThe NDP rejects the majority repor t of the Procedure and House Affairs Committee which states that the current level of disclosure is“sufficient for the transparency and accountability of the House of Commons”. “Liberals and Conservatives both seem happy with the current Senate-style self-policing,” said NDP Caucus Chair Peter Julian, aftertabling the NDP’s dissenting repor t in the House. “But Canadians are tired of secrecy, entitlement and backroom deals. Liberals andConservatives will use smoke and mirrors and band-aid solutions to try and deflect the attention from the only real solution, which isan independent oversight body.” An NDP motion that was adopted unanimously by all par ties in the House on June 18, 2013 and reaffirmed on October 21, 2013instructed the Procedure and House Affairs Committee (PROC) to conduct hearings with a view to replace the secretive Board ofInternal Economy (BOIE). Against the Auditor General’s suppor tive recommendations, the Committee’s Liberal and Conservativemembers concluded that the status quo is adequate.“Canadians want to fix Ottawa. The NDP is the only par ty actually trying to do just that”, said Julian.

New Democrats put focuson cyberbullyingNew Democrats moved to split the Conservative cyberbullyingbill (C-13) in order to put the focus squarely on legislative reformto make the distribution of intimate images without consent illegal. This would have ensured that other unrelated provisions weredealt with separately. "It is irresponsible for the Conservativesto play politics with this important and sensitive topic," saidNDP Justice critic Françoise Boivin(Gatineau). "Splitting the billas proposed by the NDP would have allowed the committee tofocus solely on cyberbullying. Unfor tuna te ly, fo r theConservatives, playing political games is more importantthan working together to protect Canadians." Earlier thisyear, New Democrat MP Robert Chisholm (Dartmouth--CoalHarbour ) in t roduced a b i l l to make non-consensua ldistribution of sexually explicit images illegal. However, instead of putting partisan politics aside to fast-track this bill, the Conservatives introduced their own version containingdozens of unrelated provisions. "Many people in the digitalcommunity have raised concerns that this bill contains significantitems like changing electronic interception laws, which areunrelated to the issue at hand," said NDP Digital Issues criticCharmaine Borg (Terrebonne - Blainville). "At committee, NewDemocrats will press the Conservatives for answers about theimpact of these provisions."

Political parties inTamil Nadu and severalother outfits had opposedIndia’s participation at anylevel in the CHOGM summitalleging that the Sri Lankangovernment had committedgross violation of humanrights during the last phaseof the civil war in 2009 andhad no plans to devolvepowers to the minorityethnic Tamils.

Modi seeks debate on Article 370Addressing his first rally in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday,Gujarat Chief Minister and the BJP’s prime ministerial candi-date Narendra Modi sought ‘at least a debate’ on Ar ticle 370(that grants special status to J&K) and assured the people thatthe par ty would transform the ‘separate State’ into a ‘superState,’ even as he laid stress on development and integration. He avoided references to terrorism, border killings and thecommunal riots in Kishtwar.“Irrespective of whether it remains a par t of the Indian Con-stitution or not, the time has come for at least a debate tofind whether Ar ticle 370 has benefited the common man inJammu and Kashmir. This is the need of the hour. The Con-gress has unfor tunately obfuscated this issue with the rheto-ric of secularism to the extent where it is hard to count itsmerits and demerits,” he said.“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has lately scolded us,saying the BJP leaders were uselessly referring to the bignames and they had no will to act. We would just remindhim one thing about Nehru: He [Nehru] had said that Ar ticle370 would get worn out with the passage of time and die.We ask Manmohan Singhji, why doesn’t his governmentact on Nehru’s wish [to repeal the law],” Mr Modi said.Significantly, Mr. Modi did not push the BJP’s trademarkdemand for the repeal of Ar ticle 370. He did not make sharpattacks on Pakistan, terrorism and Kashmir’s separatistleadership. His 40-minute speech made no mention of thisyear’s killing of the Indian troops on the International Bor-der and the LoC, ceasefire violations, the fidayeen attacksat Hiranagar and Samba or the communal riots of Kishtwar.Mr. Modi, never theless, paid rich tributes to the Army andparamilitary forces who sacrificed their lives while fight-ing terrorism and protecting the country. The BJP claimed that around one lakh people, including afew thousand Muslims, par ticipated in the ‘Lalkaar Rally’that could mark beginning of a fiery campaigning for thecoming Lok Sabha elections in the State.Mr. Modi, accompanied by par ty president Rajnath Singh, spoke at length about the need for ‘transformation’ in Jammuand Kashmir. The Congress, he alleged, had sown the seedsof a ‘separate State’. “I assure you that the BJP’s governmentwill transform Jammu and Kashmir into the country’s superState,” he asser ted.

Thailand braces for more violenceThe United Nations closed

its main office inBangkok, dozens of

schools closed and many civilservants stayed away from workon Monday as the Thailandcapital braced for more violencein a spiralling political crisis.

After a weekend of chaos inpockets of Bangkok, protestersvowed to push ahead with plansto topple Prime Minister YingluckShinawatra by occupying heroffice compound along withother key government buildings.Police again used tear gas onthousands of protesters onMonday after repeatedly drivingthem back with similar attacksthroughout Sunday.

In an e-mailed statement to itsstaff, the United Nations’ securitydepartment said “there could beviolence (Monday) on a largescale . . staff should avoidgovernment offices” and otherprotest locations.

Many of the offices andschools closed on Mondaywere located near theGovernment House, in thehistoric quarter of the capital, where police over the weekend

fought off mobs of rock-throwing protesters armed withpetrol bombs. At least threepeople were killed and 103injured in skirmishes over theweekend.

The protests have renewedfears of prolonged instability inone of Southeast Asia’sbiggest economies and comejust ahead of the peak holidaytourist season. Protest leaderswant to replace Ms. Yingluck’spopularly elected government, which they say is illegitimate, with

an unelected “people’s council,” butthey have been vague about whatthat means.

Protest leader SuthepThaugsuban, a former deputy primeminister, has refused to say how sucha demand, which has been criticizedas undemocratic, could be acceptedby a government that was electedwith an overwhelming majority.

Mr. Suthep met with Ms.Yingluck late Sunday in the presenceof top military officials even thoughhe has an arrest warrant against him.He later told cheering supporters that

he told Ms. Yingluck that the onlyway to end the protests was for herto step down. He said his goal is totopple Ms. Yingluck by Wednesday.

The military has said it is neutralin the conflict but Army commanderGen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has urgedthe police not to use force.

“There was no negotiationduring this meeting,” Mr. Suthepsaid. If Ms. Yingluck “listens to thepeople’s voices and returns thepower to the people obediently, wewill treat Ms. Yingluck Shinawatrawith politeness because we all aregood citizens.”

Yingluck’s government hasgone to painstaking lengths toavoid using deadly force.

The French Embassy issuedone of the strongest warnings ofdozens of foreign governments, urging citizens to “stay inside” toavoid the conflict on Bangkok’sstreets. The French School islocated in a northeastern Bangkokneighbourhood where gunshotsrang out over the weekend duringclashes between Ms. Yingluck’ssupporters and opponents.

In the era where commercial cinema is the spice of the season, and where majority of cine sorcerers are fetching maximumgoodies at the power of this mantra. It is quite obvious for

someone, who otherwise owns a marvelous cine sense to develop afascination for this desirable dessert and to sacrifice his actualpotential in order to join the league. And as they say for surviving ina league you need to follow the the norms established by the league. So probably this would have been the reason which compelled thedirector of Dhulia's stature to try his hands on commercial form ofmovie making. After charming the audience with some of the criticallyacclaimed cine flicks, which left the masses in aw with their brilliance, this time Dhulia stepped in to the aisle which actually is not his cupof tea. But as the thumb rule says "fascination seldom shares aberth with prudence", so even this ace cinematographer belongingto elite league of movie makers could not prevent himself fallingprey to it and decided to test his cine dexterity in the commercialform of cinema with Saif, Sonakshi, Jimmy and Vidyut starrer "BulletRaja". Due to prevailing notions and admiration about Tigmanshu'ssignature style of movie making, at opening even "Bullet Raja"secured a decent foot fall and opened with an approximate occupancyof 45 percent at the multiplexes.Premise of "Bullet Raja" primarily narrates the story of twocommoners, Raj Mishra (Saif Ali Khan) and Rudra Tripati (JimmySheirgill), who have a rendezvous at a wedding and howcircumstances transform them into circumstantial strongman or ratherdons, who are courageous enough and give a damn to societalnorms. And subsequently what follows is forming of a a formidableteam under the patronage of a local minister Ram Babu Shukla (RajBabbar). With frames rolling ahead they emerge as one of the mostfearsome duo of the region who in a fit of mild vengeance kidnap abusiness magnate, Bajaj (Gulshan Grover) and during this stint oftheir's also saves a budding starlet Mitaali (Sonakshi), with whomRaja falls in love subsequently. With vengeance breeding in hishead Bajaj decides to avenge his insult and teams up with Sumer

Yadav (Ravi kissen) for the purpose. So to know what follows nextwatch "Bullet Raja". After viewing some of the path breaking delightswhich always possessed a captivating plot underneath them, thistime many of Dhulia's admirers (even I am one of them) may getsurprised to see the quality of script which this ace cine literati haspicked to knit his first core commercial cine delight. And you will besurprised because after seeing those sheer visual delights it is hardto believe that someone belonging to Dhulia's stature can alsoembrace a disastrous worn out script while trying his hand onrelatively new genre. But unfortunately Tigmanshu did so, and optedfor a flimsy story idea which uptill great extent seems to be rottenand directionless. As soon as the narration of "Bullet Raja" takes off with so much ofmonotony and lack of expressiveness it starts giving you "I haveseen this before" pangs. Although in the second half the plot of"Bullet Raja" transforms into a somewhat gripping saga, but if wetalk about the first half then it looks totally confused and lackingcaptivating potency.Even persona of characters seems to be so ill-defined that none ofthe characters could leave any impressive impact on the viewers. Infact about "Bullet Raja" it won't be wrong to say that major durationof run-time seems to be so perplexed that throughout your stay inthe auditorium you keep on scratching your head in bewildermentthat what exactly onscreen proceedings want to communicate toyou. On the other hand if try to gauge the script of Bullet Raja onthe novelty front then, despite himself being an exceptional authorTigmanshu along with Amaresh Misra has completely failed indeveloping a refreshing out of the box and engaging tale.

'I don't know if I amemotionally ready to

invest in a relationship'Contd. from Page 17You know these six years I have been working non stop so I

have not really had the time to sit down and analyse. I don't knowwhy those films didn't do well because as far as I know I did themwith the same gusto, same passion. These six years have been toughand easy. Easy because I was fortunate to get some good films andbig banners. Tough because my debut film was such a nice set upwhere I was protected so beautifully and presented so well, and Iassumed this is how it is going to be everywhere. But then suddenlyI found myself to be on my own. The unit of my first film used to tellme that it would not be easy for me from my second film onwards, but I didn't listen to them. I am like that. Even when my parents tellme not to do something, I go ahead and do it.

You mean you had to drop some inhibitions?Maybe. I have never been on a movie set before I did my debut

film. It is right on the sets that I understood the craft, learnt to dealwith the people, and most of the time I have let my instinct do thejudging for me. I still rely a lot on my instinct. I owe a lot of what I amtoday to my sports background. You get defeated and you knowwhat to learn from it. You get a better sense of where you standwhen you face defeat. I should be grateful also to some fans whobelieved in me even when I didn't believe in myself. Everyone goesthrough bad phases, but I remember the people who neverquestioned my decisions and loved me for who I am.

So for someone who comes from a different background, is ittougher to deal with adulation?

Of course. My life has changed over the past few years. Buteven when people shower praises, it will not go to my head. Really, within me nothing has changed.

But there is something else that has changed. You were openabout your personal relationship but now you are more cagey aboutit. Did you regret being open?

I don't think I regretted that. I decided for myself that I don'twant to do that anymore. Also, right now I have nothing to talkabout. I am in this phase of my career where I have to spend all myenergy on work. When I seriously get involved with someone, I willgive a lot of myself emotionally. I am scared to do that now. I do notknow whether I am emotionally ready to invest in a relationshipright now. The beauty of investing all your energy in your work isthat it gives you back 100 per cent but in a relationship you aredependent on someone else. So yes, I am scared. And I controlmyself.

Shahid, Sona and theirquirky director

The R...Rajkumar team engage in a full-on legpulling banter....Sonakshi: Shahid and Prabhu sir would pull my leg as soon as I’denter the set.Shahid: Really? When?Sonakshi: You all are devils, who make fun of such a sweet girl.Shahid: Despite that, you continue working with Prabhu sir againand again. In fact, both of you would be sitting together and chatting, making me feel like an outsider. I had to request to join you guys.Sonakshi: What a liar! You felt settled on the first day itself.Shahid: Settled? There is no time to settle on the set. What peopledo in three days, Prabhu sir completes in a day. Where’s the time tosit idle? Prabhu: Except for the two of you, we all knew what we hadto do and were quick. Whenever you (Shahid) would ask, ‘Sir, whatam I supposed to do now?’, I would say, ‘Nothing’.Shahid: I learnt a new expression from you — no expression.Prabhu: I had given you both a full narration, hadn’t I?Shahid: But what we finally did on the set was completely different. When did you explain how the scene would be executed on the set?

Prabhu: How can I tell you what will happen on the set? Shahid:After 15 days of shooting, you looked at me with a smile and said,‘Now, you may be able to understand why I say I can’t explain whatwill happen on the set’. Because, it’s all there in your mind. I felt likeyour personal robot when you would shoot orders — ‘Shahid, lookup, jump, stop, turn left, open your mouth, close…’Sonakshi: Shahid was like a toy for you… chaabi maaro and hestarted action. However, I understand you very well. Even when Iwas standing behind the camera after giving a shot and you werebehind the monitor, you would do some action from there and Iwould understand automatically. I also became familiar with Tamil. Icould follow your discussions with your team and would know whatwas expected from me.Producer Viki Rajani joins in at this point to add, “This film is a mixedbag of action, dance, drama and comedy. It will touch the pulse ofthe audience.”R...Rajkumar, produced by Eros International (Sunil Lulla) andNextGen Films, releases worldwide on December 6.

I WAS THROWN OUT OFTHE FILM INSTITUTE

Sanjay Leela Bhansali did his editing course at the Filmand Television Institute of India, Pune (1985-88). WhileSanjay completed his course and was sent his diplomacer tificate, he was kicked out of the institute and could

not complete his diploma film that haunts him till date. He be-lieves that a par t of his soul is at the Film Institute and despitehaving directed seven acclaimed films, he still feels a lack ofcompleteness that he believes he may be able to achieve if hewere to someday edit another student’s film or teach there. Hegoes back to the institute every time before star ting a film. Thistime he went with the Bombay Times post Ram Leela. What did getting into the Film Institute mean to you?The first day I came to the institute was with my sister Bela di in1982 when she wanted me to fill up the form. That time, wewere not a l lowed inthrough the gate. Bela digot through in 1982. Forme, coming through thisgate was a big thing asthere were stor ies ofJaya Bachchan andKundan Shah and KetanMehta and Vinod Chopracoming out of here, sothere was always adream to come out of thiscampus. That orangegate still haunts me. Ifirst tried in 1984 butcould not get in. I tried asecond time in 1985 andgot through and I cannever forget that Augustrain in Pune when mydream came true. I kept going to the loo till Bela came and toldme I had got in. There is a lane just outside where Nana Patekarlives and I kept walking there. Getting in the institute was theturning point in my life.Have you changed as a person from the time you were a student?I was my best and only friend and was extremely quiet. SriramRaghavan stayed right next to my room and Raju Hirani on thesame floor but I would, at best, say only a hello to them. Iam better now and I can at least say hello to people. I haddecided I won’t allow myself to be ragged even though Iknew it was a way to break barriers with other students andovercome your inhibitions. But I found it humiliating and didnot allow it as a result and did not form a par t of the gang. Iwas very insignificant, unobtrusive, unnoticeable and madeno mark at all. But people would feel that I was arrogant andrude and therefore when my moment of trouble came and Iwas to be chucked out of the institute, I did not find the support coming myway which should have as I had no connect with people and no one foughtfor me.Why were you chucked out?Even though I was a very good student, it came from the direc-tor who wanted to revamp the institute and picked up the quiet-est student of the lot, the person who slept at 9 pm and woke upat 6 am and chucked him out. I was thrown out of the institute.I was an editing student. We did not have a direction batch sothey decided to call a director from outside, one director foreach student who would give his film to us to edit. This was tobe our diploma film. Dilip Ghosh was the director whose film Ihad to edit.

'GAMBHIR SHOULD BE INTEAM FOR SA TOUR'

MS DHONI SAID PLAYING THE ODIS BEFORE THE TESTS WOULD HELP HIS BATSMEN SETTLE IN BETTER IN SOUTH AFRICA

'There is always a new start' - DhoniThere was a time when a

day before departure fora big tour would be the

day for a captain to state intentor unwittingly reveal fears. WithIndia's most successful Testcaptain MS Dhoni, though, it hasalways been about coolingthings down a bit. Hours beforehe and team-mates left for the big- not long - tour of South Africa, you couldn't tell if Dhoni wasthe captain of a side that haswon its last six Tests at homeor one that has lost its last eightaway. Or if the team is going tocarry the confidenceaccumulated over the homeseason or doubts sown on theprevious two trips - to Englandand to Australia.

What is certain is, this isIndia 's most inexperiencedbatting line-up in a long, longtime, India don't have enoughtime to acclimatise to theconditions, and the conditionswill be vastly different fromwhat they are used to. About

this being a new side Dhonisaid even Sachin Tendulkar atsome point played for the firsttime, about the lack of time hesaid the big help will be thatthe ODIs will be played beforethe Tests, and he didn't shyaway from the challenge offacing the bouncing andmoving ball, something his sidewill need to get used to.

"Well if you see there isalways a new start," Dhoni saidwhen asked about cricketIndian cricket after Tendulkar."When paaji [Tendulkar]played his first Test match thatwas his first Test match.

"What's fairly important isthat they [the new batsmen]have a good amount ofexposure - even though it 'sODIs - outside India. Thatalways helps you adjust to thepace and bounce of the wicket. It will be a new challenge for allof them, at the same time it is alearning curve. It's the first timethat they will be going there, and

they will learn a lot in the series."Dhoni knows his team might bekids when it comes tointernational experience -especially in testing conditions- but they won't be treated withkid gloves should they fail."There is a one thing for sure,"Dhoni said. "If you don't performand you're part of the team, whether you're playing your firstTest or 50th Test match, criticismgoes hand in hand so that'ssomething you can't really getaway from. If you don't performyou will be criticised.

"What they need to keep inmind, what's really in their hands,is to prepare properly. Also, concentrate on what little thingsthey need to do so that they'resuccessful. I think it's all aboutthat. Good exposure."

Dhoni was hopeful thesequence of the tour - ODIs,followed by a tour game, followed by the Tests - will helphis side counter the reality ofIndian cricket: no proper

preparation for big tours. "I thinkit is always a challenge when yougo and play abroad," Dhoni said."You are competing against thehome team, and they know theconditions well. Their fastbowlers always know whichlength to bowl and also the areasin which they need to bowl. I feelthe batsmen will have to quicklyadjust to the bounce, see thedeliveries which they can leaveand push the bowlers to bowl atthem instead of going to thebowlers.

"But of course starting withthe ODIs it is always a help. When you get to play the shots, you get rid of nerve factorinitially. We are playing threeODIs initially, the guys will beexpressing themselves, will beplaying shots and then they willbe carrying it forward into theTest matches as well. The goodthing is that there won't be toomany changes when youcompare the Test squad to theODI squad."

MUMBAI: Gautam Gambhir's presence was felt by his absenceon Sunday. In a curious turn of events, Indian skipper MS Dhoni launcheda veiled attack on the Sandeep Patil- ledselection committee while addressingthe media prior to the team's departure toSouth Africa for a series comprising threeODIs and two Tests. It was apparent that Dhoni didn't likethe exclusion of Gautam Gambhir forthe series when he was asked whowould per form the role of the thirdopener in the series. "Gambhir is ourthird opener," he stressed while leav-ing the media contingent stunned. When reminded that Gambhir wasn't par t of the squad that flewout to SA late on Monday, Dhoni said, "You asked who are youlooking at as the third opener, I replied. You didn't specify if youwere asking about someone in this team."The No. 4 conundrumHe was less cryptic though when asked about the No. 4 positionand who would occupy the slot left vacant by the great SachinTendulkar. "Is it not possible to not look at number four at all? Imean, why not play 1, 2, 3, and then 5, 6, 7?" "It's not aboutsomeone replacing someone else. Whoever walks in at numberfour will bring a fresh character into the side and will progressfrom there. As of now we have not decided who will bat at No. 4,"he added.'A New Beginning'With the last member of the senior brigade out of the team, thisis very much Dhoni's side and the skipper wants his young turksto express themselves sans fear. So what if this is the first timeIndia will be playing a series in SA without Tendulkar. "There'salways a new star t. When Paaji played his first Test, it was hisfirst Test. It's the same for a youngster star ting now. What mat-ters is exposure. When you go to a new place, it's about howwell you adjust. It's about figuring out the pace and the bounce ofwickets and it's all a par t of learning," the skipper said.'Advantage playing ODIs first'It's a given that the team will not be given flat tracks and thewickets will be pacy and bouncy and Dhoni admits that the con-ditions will be trying. However, he feels it will be an advantageplaying ODIs before as that will offer the batsman a chance togauge the wickets. "Our batsman will have to quickly adjust tothe bounce and figure out which deliveries we need to leave. We're playing the ODIs first and given the way we've performedin the format, the 50-over game will allow our batsman to playshots, score runs, and in turn get rid of nerves factor. A positivefactor is that our Test and ODI squads are almost the same."'Don't be scared of scrutiny'This series will be the first away assignment for India post thetwin 0-4 debacles in England and Australia and Dhoni knows histeam, although young, will be criticized if a similar performanceis dished out. "If you're par t of the team then regardless of whetherit's your first Test or 50th, criticism is bound to follow if you don'tperform. That's something they can't get away from."

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain, has kicked off hisrole as BCB's new cricket operations committee chairman byseeking to bring more solidarity with India, Pakistan and SriLanka. He was given the most influential cricketing position inBCB after he was elected as director unopposed last month. The cricket operations committee is in overall charge of theBangladesh team as well as the Bangladesh A side, and Akrambelieves there ought to be more tours to the neighbouring coun-tries. The senior side has never toured India, while their visitsto Sri Lanka have substantially reduced over the last five years. The BCB's relationship with the PCB is at rock bottom after theyfailed to send over a side to Pakistan twice last year."I want to build more understanding with the neighbouring coun-tries before we go to Australia and New Zealand," Akram toldthe Bangla daily Prothom Alo. "If we can arrange more A team,Academy and Under-19 matches with them regularly, we canhold more international matches in that way. They cooperatedwith us before we became a Test nation. So why not now? I willtry hard to develop relations with them. We have to play regu-larly with them, and at the same time, reduce our differences."Akram however said that he would have to arrange for morematches outside the new Future Tours Programme which isn'tfavourable to Bangladesh, and added that the previous board'sbargaining capabilities left a lot to be desired.

Cheteshwar Pujara warmsup for SA with double tonCHENNAI: The fourth day of the Tamil Nadu-Saurashtra RanjiGroup B game here was once again about one man - CheteshwarPujara (269, 33x4) - and his ability to carry the team on hisshoulders. The ever-solid Pujara continued from where he hadleft off on Saturday to give his team the all-impor tant first-innings lead. The India No. 3 stood tall as Saurashtra finishedat 581-6 in chase of TN's 565-8 declared. It helped them gainthe crucial three points while TN had to be content with one.Pujara's batting was about his refined approach and finesse. There was hardly a false stroke and the Saurashtra batsmanensured that he doesn't play anything in the air. Having com-menced the day on 152, Pujara quickly got off the blocks as the TNbowlers struggled to find answers. More than the Tamil Nadu bowlers, itwas bad light apart from rain that seemed to come in the way of Saurashtrataking the first innings lead. Pujara was left stranded on 193 for about anhour in the morning session. But once the covers were off, he did not takemuch time to script his ninth double century in first-class cricket, courtesya square-drive off right-arm medium-pacer J Kaushik. Pujara, along withskipper Jaydev Shah (195, 17x4, 8x6) proved to be biggest differencebetween the two sides. Earlier, a cloud cover greeted the teams as theyarrived for the final day, but that did not deter the Shah-Pujara pair fromgetting the runs at will. From their overnight total of 326-3, the visitorsswelled their total to 419 before right-arm medium-pacer Aswin Cristdismissed Shah off his very first over of the day, caught by B Aparajith atgully. The Shah-Pujara stand fetched 353 runs in 93 overs.

good to start with ODIs. As thebatsmen can play their shotsand express themselves andcarry it into the Tests," he saidahead of team departure.Asked who will perform theduties of the third opener inTests, which has only tworegulars in Shikhar Dhawanand Murali Vijay, Dhonisurprised everyone bynaming Gautam Gambhir, who is not part of the 17-member squad."If you see, Gautam isdefinitely our third openerthat we are considering.
