In the year 1200 Bristol was a thriving mercantile town, with a population of nearly 2000; today the population is closer to 350,000; however we are lucky to still be surrounded by flora and fauna that brings the countryside into the heart of our city.

The closest major city to London and gateway to South West England, lively and dynamic, cosmopolitan and ambitious, Bristol is truly a 21st-century city; combining a rich maritime heritage, state-of-the-art attractions, world-class events, a wonderful new shopping quarter and a richly deserved status as the ‘UK’s Green Capital’ and the ‘European Green Capital 2015’.

Bristol in Bloom raises awareness and maximises opportunities for improving the environment ~ it brings flowers and colour across the city, in partnership with communities in both the private and public sectors. GOLD medal and National UK winners in the RHS Britain in Bloom initiative Bristol in Bloom was honoured to represent the United Kingdom in Entente Florale in 2012 when we were delighted to achieve the prestigious GOLD AWARD.

“...a city that has a rich seam of history, ful l of echoes and marks fr om the past.”

Award Ceremony and Gala Dinner The Entente Florale Award

Ceremony and Gala Dinner will be held at the Bristol

Marriott City Centre which is located in the

heart of the City and on the door step of the

award winning Cabot Circus

shopping centre.

An instantly impressive venue for major events and special banquets, fully air-conditioned and accommodating up to 700 guests for a reception.

For those delegates who wish to stay in luxury there are 300 bedrooms featuring en-suite bathroom, high-speed Internet access, iron, hair dryer, safe, with an onsite Gymnasium & leisure club including indoor pool, spa bath & steam room for use of all residents.

‘Bristol Hosts Europe’ the Saturday Market will be a wonderful event in Millennium Square which is located in the heart of the city within the new Harbourside development. The modern landscaping, large water feature and bronze statues (one of which is Bristol-born actor Gary Grant) provide a fabulous setting for the Bristol Big Screen.

Bristol Aquarium Tour & Buffet Supper

With over 40 displays and over 4,000 aquatic creatures in themed geographical

zones, Bristol Aquarium offers an inspirational experience, featuring

a wide range of displays from UK native to urban jungle, coral seas

and the Amazon.

ExcursionsTour 3: Brunel’s ss Great Britain ~ ssgreatbritain.org One of the most important historic ships in the world

Winner of more than 30 major tourism, heritage, conservation and access awards, the Dockyard Museum tells the ss Great Britain’s remarkable story, from her launch in 1843 ~ through a long career as luxury liner, emigrant steam clipper to a super-sized sailing ship carrying coal to San Francisco ~ discover the story of her rescue from the bottom of the South Atlantic and her final triumphant return to Bristol.

Brunel fitted her with a 1000 hp steam engine, the most powerful yet used at sea, no one had ever designed so vast a ship, nor had the vision to build it of iron. Perhaps most daring of all, Brunel rejected using conventional paddle wheels to drive his ship. Instead, he gave the ss Great Britain a screw propeller. This was the newest invention in maritime technology, by seeing how to combine these key innovations, Brunel created a ship that changed history.

Tour 4: Clifton Suspension Bridge ~ cliftonbridge.org.uk 150 years Anniversary

Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s personal motto was ‘En Avant’ (Forward) a man dedicated and in love with his craft, he described the Bridge as his first child, his darling; the project was started when he was 23 years old and took 33 years to complete.

The Bridge spans 214 metres between its two 26 metre high towers, standing 76 metres above the high water mark in the Avon Gorge; which was formed during the last ice age. Brunel spent much time surveying the location before working on his designs to best ensure the dramatic effect of the Bridge whilst not impacting on the beauty of the Gorge. Home to many rare plants and animals it is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is one of the country’s very best wildlife and geological sites.

Followed by a choice of either ~

The beautiful herbaceous borders of Tour 4a: Bristol Zoological Garden

There are unusual trees, shrubs and plants from around the world, such as the monkey puzzle tree, tree ferns, wollemi pine and the purple-berried flax lily. You can also see rare species like moth orchids from the Philippines or native plants like the bath asparagus, which are endangered in the wild. The tree collection is as broad as it is tall, ranging from ornamental acers to centuries old cedars; carefully combined colour and texture create stunning displays all year round.

It’s thanks to over 170 years of nurture and gardening artistry, that we’ve established these 12 acres of such rare beauty and outstanding variety, which have great botanical and educational interest, and provide an enjoyable horticultural experience for all.
