AIESEC International Congress 2012 | Moscow, Russia

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

FOREWORD

Lao Tsu

Journey is not only about travelling to new destination, it’s a process of self-discovery, process of finding your-self in new environment and rediscovering your place in this world. Journey is education in its highest form.Cross-cultural awareness nourishes our curiosity and always informs what is different in you and in others.

We believe as Congress Committee that experience of IC 2012 will be huge transformation and learning in each single AIESEC way and life and it will be even more powerful through getting to know various part of vast country which is called Russia. To make International Congress happen, CC team works hard and in the middle of June team leaders will come to join preparation. We all understand huge responsibility that lies on us, but it’s not only about organizing committee now.

It also depends on you, on every single move you make to be part of this amazing conference. There are a lot of small steps which make you closer to IC2012, like getting visa, buying tickets, and all these steps require discipline and consideration.

IC is about each one of you, your country and at the same time about AIESEC globally as it is. And only together we can make it happen, all 110 countries heading towards one goal, one destination to open next page in AIESEC history for the first time in Russia.

ICVENUE

International Congress Venue is the Cosmos Hotel, majestic 25-story hotel structure, built in 1979 and intended to cater the XXII Moscow Olympics. The Cosmos hotel complex is located in one of the most beautiful and ecologically healthy districts of Moscow. n one of the city's major streets - prospect Mira, in green district, just 20 minutes drive to the centre. It is next to the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (V.V.C.), close to Ostankino Telecom Tower, Count Sheremetyev's Palace, the "Olimpijsky" Sports Complex and the "Sokolniki" Exhibition Complex. The closest airport to the venue is «Sheremetyevo» airport (SVO), and the most distant is “Domodedovo” airport

The architectural asceticism expressed by the simplicity and harmony of its construction and the combination of glass and steel make the hotel similar to the spaceship striving to the universe. Even the interior of the hotel creates the atmosphere of cosmic freedom, purity and relaxation.

Cosmos hotel is winner of Russian Business Travel & MICE Award 2011 "Best congress hotel in Moscow 3*"

Delegates will live in standard rooms, 3 people in 1 room. Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served in main hotel restaurant “Kalinka”

More information about the hotel you can find on website http://www.hotelcosmos.ru/eng/

WINDOWVIEW

Right next to the IC venue there is a Monu-ment to the Conquerors of Space, erected to celebrate achievements of the Soviet people in space exploration.

The world's first satellite was sent into space from the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. Soon after, a contest was announced to find the best design for a monument to mark this historic occasion, and five years later the Explorers of the Cosmos monument was unveiled on Moscow's Prospekt Mira, in honour of those who had begun the space era.

The upper part of the monument comprises a vast slanting obelisk of steel and titanium that stretches to a height of 99 metres, topped by an eleven metre rocket pointed toward the heavens.

ISSUESPECIAL10

There are so many ways to trigger the anxiety of upcoming travelling, but one of the good old ones - startting a good book about the coutry you are about to go to. Just in case this thought has already visited you - we have prepared an issuespecial - a couple of recomendations on what worldwide known Russian books to read now or later.

“...this book is a great act of faith in art and in the human spirit” [Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak]

[The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov]

[Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky]

This epic tale about the effects of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath on a bourgeois family was not published in the Soviet Union until 1987. One of the results of its publication in the West was Pasternak's complete rejection by Soviet authorities; when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958 he was compelled to decline it.

Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet/physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago's love for the tender and beautiful Lara, the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times.

One of the greatest novels ever to come out of the Soviet Union. A parable on power and its corruption, on good and evil and on human frailty and the strength of love. Equal parts fable, fantasy, political satire and slapstick.

A desperate young man plans the perfect crime -- the murder of a despicable pawnbroker, an old women no one loves and no one will mourn. Is it not just, he reasons, for a man of genius to commit such a crime, to transgress moral law -- if it will ultimately benefit humanity? So begins one of the greatest novels ever written: a powerful psycho-logical study, a terrifying murder mystery, a fascinating detective thriller infused with philosophical, religious and social commentary. Raskolnikov, an impoverished student living in a garret in the gloomy slums of St. Petersburg, carries out his grotesque scheme and plunges into a hell of persecution, madness and terror. Crime And Punishment takes the reader on a journey into the darkest recesses of the criminal and depraved mind, and exposes the soul of a man possessed by both good and evil ... a man who cannot escape his own conscience.
