Introduction
• Delay means a time overrun either beyond the contract date or
beyond the date that the parties have agreed upon for the delivery of
the project.
• Delay is an interruption in the planned sequence or flow of work. It
can occur during the work or it can effect the over all project, so
completion of project may be extended.
• Delay Analysis is used to find the delays and its effects on the
project schedule and factors affecting the project.
![Page 5: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Need of the Study
• This study concentrates on the work sequence, planning and
scheduling of the project.
• This study helps to identify the critical paths of the Reservoir and
pumping station construction work sequence.
• This study dwells on the importance of construction schedules in
achieving the aim of producing good quality construction work within
the specified time.
• This study also helps the project manager and concerned professionals
to produce good planning and scheduling for the project.
![Page 6: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Objectives of the Study
To understand and identify the major types of construction
delays and causes in the construction project.
To estimate the amount of resources involved in the project,
during planning and construction stage.
To make a realistic and achievable schedule using Primavera.
To measure the impacts of construction delays of schedule
project.

Literature Review
![Page 8: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
• Trying to anticipate what will happen and devising ways of
achieving the set of objectives and targets”.
• The process of selecting one method and order of work to be
used on a project among all the various methods and
sequences in which it could be done.
• The process of determining the actual time periods during
which the activities are planned to take place.
• Scheduling is used for measuring delay and time extensions.
• Delay is an event that causes extended time to complete all or
part of the project

Most Common Causes
Differing site conditions
Change in requirements or design
Inclement weather
Shortage of labor, material and equipment
Defective plans or specifications
![Page 11: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Construction Delay Types
Excusable Delay:
o Compensable Delay
o Non - Compensable Delay
Non Excusable Delay
![Page 12: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Non Excusable Delays• Contractor problem result in schedule impacts.
• Contractor not entitled to either time extension or
compensation.
• Examples:
• Late submittals
• Late material delivery
• Insufficient manpower
![Page 13: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Conti…
• Contractor gets NO additional TIME
• Contractor gets NO additional MONEY
![Page 14: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Excusable But Non Compensable
• Delay event:
Not controlled by the contractor
Not controlled by the owner
• Depends on contract, but typically
Acts of God
Union strikes
Local disputes
![Page 15: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
• Granted additional TIME
• NO additional MONEY
Owner Caused Delay:
• Defective designs
• Slow return of shop drawings
• Change order
• Defective supplied equipments

Critical and Non Critical Delays
• Delays that result in extended project completion are
known as “Critical delays” and
• Delay that do not extend the project completion date are
known as Non Critical delays.

Project Schedule
• The total project duration was 713 days. The actual planned
schedule contains all types of activities with different duration
based upon the nature of work.
• The actual planned schedule also contains work breakdown
structure where the activities are categorized under their
specific work and explains the resources, roles assigned to the
activities.
![Page 25: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Updated Proposed Schedule
• The updated proposed schedule was 683 days. The updated
proposed schedule is prepared by an general survey regarding
the duration of the project.
• The survey is conducted to find out whether the planned
schedule can be decreased by adding more resources.
![Page 26: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Duration Analysis
• The duration analysis is to compare the actual planned
schedule duration and updated proposed schedule duration.
• The duration of the activities are taken into account to show
the difference between the two schedules.
• The duration of the activities are compared to find out the
delays in both schedules.

• After comparing both the durations of activities, the updated
proposed schedule is reduced by 30 days.
• The schedule duration is decreased by assigning more resources
(manpower, equipments).

Resource Analysis
• The resource analysis is to compare the resources used in
actual planned schedule and updated proposed schedule. The
resources assigned for actual planned schedule takes the
project to complete in 713 days.
• The updated proposed schedule takes 683 days to complete the
project. By assigning more resources the duration is decreased
by 30 days.

Summary and conclusions
![Page 42: Delay analysis of raw water reservoir and pumping Station](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062218/58cf28fb1a28ab00168b4881/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
Conclusion • It is observed from delay analysis that, the total 20 parameters
were identified and analyzed.
• From these 20 parameters, 11 parameters are the sensitive
parameters that effect the overall duration of the construction
project.
• It is observed that the updated proposed schedule decreased, by
increasing the resources and the cost of the project increased.
• After the updated proposed schedule, the complete project was
reduced by 30 days.
