MODERATOR’S DUTIES•Room setup – push chairs to the perimeter of the room. Students sit in a huddle on the floor and parents/guests sit in the chairs. •Teams have 20 seconds to answer question. If a team is trying to earn points AFTER the other team misses the question, they must answer immediately. There is no time for deliberation. •Remind parents that when students are conferring, it is important that the room remain quiet (i.e. no cell phones, no texting, if small children are disruptive kindly ask them to step into the hall, etc.). •Each team is permitted to have 12 students participate in each round. If a team has more than 12 students, the extra students will need to sit out the round (NOTE: teams may have from 8-15 students).

MODERATOR’S DUTIES•The first round will be slightly longer than the second and third rounds to allow everyone additional time to acclimate themselves to the competition format. •The moderator guidelines state that you must repeat each question and answer twice. Please use your judgment to decide if this is necessary. •If you finish a round early, please tell the teams to remain in the classroom until the announcement is made to move to the next round. This will prevent other rooms from being distracted by noise in the hallways.

MODERATOR’S DUTIES• If a MODERATOR witnesses a TEAM LEADER (or outside observer) providing hints/help to their team DURING THE ROUND, the MODERATOR will exclude that team from any further questions (=0 for the round), and the opposing team will receive the remainder of their 20 questions.

• NOTE: Before round 1 begins, MODERATORS should shuffle questions for each individual round to make sure a variety of books are covered during the rounds of questioning.

Caveats•MODERATORS and SCOREKEEPERS should make a “room map” of their assigned classroom so that the room can be easily re-organized after Round 3. Ask students participating in Round 3 to assist in returning the room to original set-up before going to the Awards Assembly.

•EXIT PLAN: We will need to leave HTHS as quickly as possible following the Awards Assembly. To make sure all your students have a ride home, please arrange for your team to meet outside the building. Have a parent pick-up policy in place before the competition.
