Effective calf care

Calf care is a vital part of any farming operation. Get it right and productivity should increase and with it so should profitability. Get it wrong and it can lead to production losses and unnecessary calf costs for your business.

In this brief catalogue we list a number of products that can help when rearing calves, along with some tips and tricks that you should bear in mind. For a detailed breakdown of how to improve calf care you can read the comprehensive DeLaval calf rearing handbook, which is available for download at www.delaval.com/en/-/Dairy-knowledge-and-advice/Calf-management

Getting it rightThe ideal heifer will calve at 24 months, weigh somewhat more than 600 kg (1320 lbs)* and live a healthy and fertile life. It will also deliver a high lifetime yield of premium quality milk. To achieve this cows needs to get the right start to life. This means making sure they are reared in a healthy environment with the right amounts of feed on a daily basis, that they receive the right nutrients and supplements, and that they are treated quickly and effectively if they fall ill.

Benefits of high growth rates• Higher early (preweaning) growth rate has been associated

with reduced mortality.• Higher early growth rate has been associated with increased

milk yield during first and second lactation• Higher growth rate has been shown to increase fertility both

for heifer and in first lactating animals• Higher growth rate enables heifers to calve first time at a young

age (24-25 months) resulting in an increased life time yield• Higher growth rate and an earlier first calving reduces the

feed and labour for rearing

The recommendation for larger breeds is to achieve a daily weight gain of 750g or higher during the full rearing period. For smaller breeds like Jersey the recommended corresponding weight gain is 500g or higher.

Calving – the best startCalving is a risky process for both mother and calf. Calves are born with virtually no immune system or natural ability to defend for themselves. It is therefore vital that the feed they receive provides them with the best possible start, providing both the protection and the nutrition they need to grow into strong, productive cows. At this stage, colostrum is essential for the well-being of the calf. Give calves at least 4L (or 10% of BW) high quality colostrum within 2 hours of birth to reduce the likelihood of diarrhoea – the most common cause of death among newborn calves.

Day six – continuing the good start. The rumen isn’t very developed yet so feeding has to be controlled to minimise stomach problems. Calves should be given plenty of milk and the amounts should be gradually increased as they gain weight. Any solids should be fed to calves a handful at time in these early stages,

as their stomachs become used to them. Calves need access to fresh water as and when they want it. Your calves also need to be able to walk around and play, they should have access to good quality air and be in an area that is cleaned on a regular basis, including fresh bedding.

Second month – preparing for the futureAfter the first month the rumen of calves is more developed. This means that they are ready for a change of diet to solid feed. They will still consume a large amount of liquid, in the form of water. If they are deprived of drinking water, starter intake can decrease, which in turn can decrease weight gain. Getting the feed and liquid intake levels right is essential in order for cows to achieve the right weight for maximum production when they mature.

Calves should gain weight at a rate of more than 750g a day (this is less for smaller breeds - see table at the bottom of the page), which means providing the right amount of feed for the right conditions. For example, a calf with a weigth of 45 kg being reared in 20°C will require around 6–7 litres of milk a day, while a calf being reared in -25°C will require almost double the amount.

Up to three months – the next stepsAfter the first week, when the calf has started to build up its immune system and given it is sturdy and consumes milk steadily from a nipple it can be housed individually or moved to group housing. Whether you choose individual or group housing, sanitation, adequate nutrition and ventilation remain important factors. Calves, similar to older animals, will perform best in clean, dry, comfortable and well-ventilated housing with free access to palatable feed and water.

Growth rate and nutrient intake prior to weaning have a greater effect on milk yield than genetic selection. Genetic selection yields around 70–120kg milk per lactation. Pre-weaning calf nutrition and effective management can yield between four and eight times more milk than genetic selection in the first and second lactations.

Calves can be housed in groups or individually, indoors or outdoors. Keeping one or two calves in separate pens in the early weeks and months of their lives will allow them space to move around, while reducing the risk of any illness spreading. Feeding is also easy to control as you can monitor exactly how much each calf is consuming.

Once your calves pass the eight weeks mark you may wish to move them over to cubicles in your barn. The right stalling, the right sized pens and the right access to feed and water all make a big difference in the welfare of your calves. DeLaval stalling solutions are designed to suit your calves throughout their lifetime (Be sure to fulfill local and country specific legislation on how you house your calves).

1. Calf hutch CH2 This is the perfect size for calves up to 8 weeks. It ensures a dry, comfortable environment for the calf protecting it from wind, sun, cold and rain.

Dimensions: 122cm W x 221cm L x 136cm H

2. Calf hutch CH3 The CH3 can be used for calves up to 12 weeks and large bull calves. It ensures a dry, comfortable environment for the calf protecting it from wind, sun, cold and rain.Dimensions: 158cm W x 249cm L x 140cm H

3. DeLaval calf hutch GH4 The sudden transition from an individual hutch to a large group can cause calves unnecessary stress. However, by placing calves in a “half-way house” such as a group hutch, they can adapt to being with others, learning how to access feed and water. The group hutch can house 4-5 weaned calves. Dimensions: 270cm W x 226cm L x 201cm H

4. DeLaval calf box CB1 — penThis heavy-duty pen makes it easy to observe how your calves are progressing. The robust feeding door with steel frame

facilitates access to calves. Made from heavy-gauge, reinforced roto-moulded plastic, DeLaval CB1 enables thorough cleaning routines.

5. DeLaval calf box CB10DeLaval calf box CB10 is easy to keep clean, and makes it easier to provide individual calf care: a comfortable place to lie down, protection against infection, adequate ventilation and easy access to food and water.Dimensions:• Width: 1 000 /1 100 or 1 300 mm• Length: 1 200 /1 400 or 1 600 mm• Height, top box: 1 200 mm

6. Premium fence and CH2The calf hutch CH2 can be combined with a fence made of hot dipped galvanized steel. The fence creates a pen providing an area for calves so that they can be outdoors. The pen also makes it easier to supervise calves.

DeLaval SC1 and DC2DeLaval SC1 and DC2 are food approved plastic water troughs which can be used in loose housing barns or on a pasture. They come as single chamber (SC1) or as double chamber (DC2) with capacities of 18 and 36 liters. With double wall isolation, this trough is ideal for the use outside and in cold climates. A submersible heater is provided with the trough to keep the the valve ice free. The user-friendly hatch allows fast and easy maintenance work of the valve and the heater. Easy open clips means no tools are required.

DeLaval water bowl C10The C10 provides the right amount of water for heifer needs. With a capacity of 10 l/min this bowl optimises the growth of your future cows.

DeLaval water bowl CF7The DeLaval CF7 is a float water bowl designed for young stock. The newly designed CF7 is lighter than previous models and has a plug to support the cleaning process. The float valve has a capacity of 5 l/min.

Access to clean fresh water is essential for calves (and all cows for that matter). Water and the microbes from feed help to promote healthy rumen growth. The need for water increases on warm days.

Feed is an essential aspect of the calving process. It provides calves with the good start they need and helps them remain productive throughout their lives. Calves need all the help they can get to ensure they consume the right supplements and nutrients at the right time. This way their digestive systems will develop and their weight should increase steadily, according to plan.

Simplifying and improving feeding

Whether you are feeding a calf colustrum in its first hours or concentrates after a few months there is a feeding solution to simplify the job. And as the calves get older you can choose to automate the feeding process for optimal control and efficiency.

1. DeLaval calf feeder CF150XDeLaval calf feeder CF150X combines a milk station with a totally integrated concentrate station or with a second milk station. The calf feeder programme on DeLaval feeding processor FP204X allows complete feeding plans to be set per group of calves, or for

individual calves. Weaning can be done automatically according to concentrate intake. Information from milk and concentrate consumption makes it easy to detect possible health problems before the calves are affected. Delaval calf feeder CF150X allows you to feed your calves cow’s milk, milk-replacer, or a

combination of both. Each CF150X can handle up to 25 calves. You can feed more calves by connecting as many as four stations to one FP204X processor, which can then manage up to 100 calves. Several processors can be linked via the PC Link tool, offering the possibility to extend the capacity of the system.

2. DeLaval calf feeder CF500+ and3. DeLaval calf feeder CF1000+DeLaval CF500+ and DeLaval CF1000+ are both available with a stand-alone control or a DeLaval herd management connected control system. There are many advantages with herd management connectivity, but the sophisticated on-board processor in the stand-alone control system gives good calf feeding control.

Freshly preparedWhen a calf enters a milk station, both CF500+ and CF1000+ prepare precise instant portions of fresh milk at the right temperature, provided the calf is allowed to drink. The milk station identifies each calf by its electronic transponder, knows the calf’s feeding plan, when it is allowed to drink, and how much. CF500+ can handle two teat units, allowing up to 50 calves to use the feeder. CF1000+ can handle four teat units and up to 120 calves. It is available in milk, powder and combi versions. The combi version can mix fresh milk, powder and water in any combination.

4. DeLaval calf milk mobile CMM200+The calf mobile is available in 100, 180 and 200 liter volume models. The milk trolley allows you to prepare and distribute milk (fresh or powder) at the right temperature. The new model CMM200+ expands the range to include a combined version with a capacity of 200 liters. Thanks to its motorised wheels, the work of distributing milk is made easier. And with its dosing pump control, you can be sure of distributing the correct quantities.

Bringing feed to calves is a time-consuming task – DeLaval mobile feed tanks are robust, hygienic and easy to move, even over rough and uneven ground. Made from stainless steel, these feeder carts are durable and easy to clean. DeLaval CMM200+ includes on-board mixing and heating. Equipped with its own drive, it features a control system, user interface, powerful dosing pump and tank cover. All models can even be used to collect milk from DeLaval VMS divert units.

Controlling the type and amount of feed your calves eat is essential if you want them to gain the appropriate weight on a daily basis and become healthy and productive throughout their lives. The best way to achieve this is with a DeLaval feeding solution.

Efficient monitoring Hygiene and comfortEvery calf represents an investment in your business. Therefore you should monitor them on a regular basis, particularly in the initial days after birth. A cow camera with remote viewing is an ideal option if you cannot be in the barn, particularly in the calving area.

Regular cleaning and sterilising of pens and stalling is essential to preserve the health of your calves. Ensuring your calves have access to fresh air is also vital: if you can smell ammonia in the air then your calves could suffer. Effective ventilation in the barn will help calves develop into healthy and strong individuals.
