Numerous challenges had to be planned for and overcome during the course of the project: Timing – Due to the regeneration work being undertaken in the winter months, timing was crucial for the project and the challenge was to be able to lay as much of the product as possible within the better weather periods, this was extremely challenging given that it was the wettest January on record. Organisation – With a small window of opportunity with regards the weather, both the contractor and materials needed to be at the work site at short notice. THE REQUIREMENTS

THE SOLUTION

As a pedestrian thoroughfare, a hardwearing aggregate was specified by the Council. In contrast to the industrial grey of the bridge, the aggregate needed to provide thewow factor and compliment the other areas of Cosham which were being redevelopedunder the same umbrella project (see Cosham High Street Case Study).

The contractor was also keen to find a way of guaranteeing that the time restrictionswere met and that the maximum amount of DekorBound surfacing was laid duringthe windows of opportunity when the weather was good.

Like the Cosham High Street project, the Council opted for the toughwearing – DekorBound system with a Natural Wicker aggregate, at adepth of 18mm.

To enable the work to be completed in the allotted time, the contractorswere provided with the hire of a DekorTrowel – the latest in resinsurfacing application technology. DekorTrowel is a multi-bladed trowellingmachine which compacts and shapes the resin and aggregate mix intothe desired surface with minimal hand trowelling required. One workerwith a DekorTrowel is able to lay up the same amount of surface perhour as three manual operatives. Using the DekorTrowel meant that the contractorsfinished the work in the allotted time period, keeping the re-opening of the road andbridge on schedule.

DekorGrip were also able to help with thetiming and delivery issues that the Councilcontractor faced. Through close communicationand planning, the resin, which needs to be kept in a warm place overnightto maintain pliability, was stored at the DekorGrip warehouse located nearby whilst the preparation work was done and then shipped on demand, straight to the site when the weather allowed the resin bound system to be laid.

The Council were so impressed with theadvice, service and system that they have specified the use of DekorGrip in a numberof other projects.
