The NLA Role in Medicine
Clinical Lipidology is a multidisciplinary branch of
medicine focusing on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism and their
associated disorders.

Definition of Clinical Lipidology
The development of certification programs for Clinical Lidologists and the lipid management team of allied health providers was spearheaded by the visionary leaders of the National Lipid Association.
Although independent from each other, the organizations work closely together to ensure adequate educational opportunities for lipid professionals
Certification
American Board of Clinical Lipidology(ABCL)
The ABCL is an independent certifying organization offering the only certification program for physicians specializing in Clinical Lipidology.
Since offering its first exam in 2005, nearly 500 physicians have earned the distinction of “Diplomate of the ABCL.”
Clinical Lipidologists come from a variety of backgrounds: Internal Medicine Cardiology Endocrinology Family Practice Osteopathy Obstetrics & Gynecology Preventive Medicine
The ABCL certification program establishes a consistent benchmark of expertise in the field of
Clinical Lipidology.

Credentialing Requirements
Basic Requirements for All Candidates Be a currently licensed physician (MD or DO) in the United
States or Canada Be certified by a primary care board (ABMS or equivalent) (i.e.,
Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Geriatrics, Neurology/Vascular Neurology, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology)
OR Have completed a two-year minimum relevant accredited
fellowship (e.g., cardiology, endocrinology)
OR Have two years of demonstrated appropriate experience and
practice activity in the management of patients with lipid disorders

Examination Dates – 2010 4-hour Exam to be Offered Online in Testing
Centers in US and Canada. Exam is multiple-choice with ~240 questions.
Spring Testing Window March 15–April 15, 2010
Summer Testing Window June 14–July 14, 2010
Fall Testing Window September 20–October 20, 2010

CORE CERTIFICATIONBasic Competency in Clinical Lipidology
• Open to licensed Allied Health Professionals specializing in the management of patients with lipid and related cardiometabolic disorders.
• Must meet clinical experience and training requirements to credential.
• 200-question comprehensive exam in clinical lipidology
• Open to primary care and allied professionals with an interest in the area of dyslipidemia.
• Must complete 10+ hours of focused training in lipid management
• 50-question exam covering basics of dyslipidemia management
