Dear Friend of the Howard Young Foundation,For more than 33 years, the Howard Young Foundation has been helping Howard Young Medical Center and

Ascension Eagle River Hospital advance the health and wellness of the communities we serve through your

charitable support.

Because of your generosity, last year the Foundation raised $2.1 million. Your contributions, matched in some

cases by Ascension, made it possible for us to gift $2.5 million right back into our local hospitals and community

for innovative surgical, emergency and patient experience equipment. Thank you for your dedicated support.

We trust you will enjoy reading about the Foundation’s new special campaigns and how you can help. Be sure

to check out the life-changing opportunities to give for our youth on the autism spectrum, Women's Legacy

Council’s “We’re Ticked Off” campaign, and comforting “We Care” totes for those living with breast cancer.

These are only a few ways that your gifts can impact our community.

Whether you support the Foundation by participating in special campaigns, annual donations, through

your estate plans or by supporting events like the Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival, YOU CHANGE LIVES.

And for that, we say THANK YOU!

Sincerely,

Erin Biertzer, President Howard Young Foundation

From the Chairman...Investing in Community by Supporting Quality Healthcare

We dedicate this issue of Defining

Moments to the memory of Ken Ozinga,

who passed away in early February.

Ken was a valuable member of the

Howard Young Foundation Board and

also served on the executive board

as treasurer. Ken, along with his

wife Judy, shared their caring talents

throughout this community. He

will be greatly missed by many.

The purpose of the Foundation is

and always has been to support the

Howard Young Medical Center and Ascension Eagle

River Hospital initiatives that foster the health and

well-being of the communities they serve. We

work hard to support all the healthcare providers

who work at these hospitals and involve them in

identifying the future needs of the hospitals.

Ascension is actively recruiting doctors to our two

local hospitals. Our caring community looks forward

to welcoming these medical professionals and their

families to the Northwoods. Your gifts to the Howard

Young Foundation enable us to maintain the quality

of our facilities, meet the training needs of our local

medical staff and ensure the quality of care provided

to each patient. It’s a defining difference that makes

our area an appealing choice for highly-skilled

medical professionals.

NEW INITIATIVES

Two new funds were established to address growing

and ongoing health concerns in our community.

We have established an Autism Services fund to

support medical and educational autism services.

The prevalence of autism continues to rise and we are

proud to fund services, through the generosity of the

community, that provide children and their families

with timely and local diagnoses along with the many

therapies and customized education that greatly increase

a child’s confidence and build independent living and

job skills. You can read more in our cover story.

The Tick-Borne Illness Center fund was initiated

to address Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

Wisconsin’s northern communities see one of the

nation’s highest concentrations of ticks and the

illnesses associated with them. This initiative will help

fund research and treatment of tick-borne diseases.

MINOCQUA DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

Be sure to come to the 3rd Annual Minocqua Dragon

Boat Festival on August 18, 2018 at Torpy Park.

Sponsor the event or a team. Enjoy food, beverages

and shopping on site. And of course, cheer for the

mighty dragon boat racers.

THANKS FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT

Over the past year, working with our generous

donors, the Howard Young Foundation has funded

the purchase of equipment like the ZeroG® Gait &

Balance System, C.A.R.E Healing Channel, warming

blankets for the birthing center, an ambulance, lift

cots and more. Your contributions make it possible

for us to support ongoing training for our hospitals’

highly-skilled medical professionals, life-saving

services for our patients, life-changing opportunities

for our youth on the autism spectrum and comforting

personal care packages for those living with breast

cancer. These are only a few ways that your gifts

impact our community. You truly make a difference.

Sincerely,

Trig Solberg Board Chairman

Ascension’s commitment to our Northwoods community can be seen through our investments in facilities, equipment, staff and services.

RENOVATIONS IMPROVE PATIENT EXPERIENCEThe final touches are being put on the renovations to Howard Young Medical Center’s emergency department (ED) and rehabilitation department.

Ascension’s investment of $5 million made it possible to restructure the ED space to provide a more welcoming entrance. A triage room accommodates patients if there is a wait for ED services, while a comfortable waiting room is available for friends and family. We’ve also added a consult room so physicians can talk privately to family members without the distraction of the ED hustle and bustle.

The rehab department has been rearranged with treatment equipment in the center and the track around the outside, so patients can complete all of their treatments without having to leave the area. Some of the services, including the wound clinic, have been centralized into service pods, reducing the need for patients and associates to move from spot to spot. We’ve also added enclosed treatment rooms to provide more privacy.

The ZeroG® Gait & Balance System, funded through the Howard Young Foundation and generously matched by Ascension, will be an invaluable addition to the rehab department. With it, patients can practice walking, balancing, sit-to-stand exercises and stairs in a safe, controlled environment, without the fear of falling. The device also reduces the physical strain on therapists. Only a few Wisconsin hospitals have the ZeroG, the nearest

of which is in Milwaukee. Your charitable support has made it possible to bring this life-changing technology to Howard Young Medical Center and our rural patients.

BUILDING OUR MEDICAL STAFFHigh-quality facilities and equipment are important, but so is an excellent medical staff. We established our medical staff development plan and are actively recruiting to build our local team of primary care physicians and specialists. We are confident we will be successful in expanding our staff and continuing our established history of providing top-tier treatment to both Northwoods residents and visitors.

ASCENSION SUPPORTS LOCAL NEEDSThe number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to rise. But so does our level of support to those children and their families.

We will continue to provide therapy services to students in our schools – including the new Lakeland STAR charter schools - as well as at our hospital. Contributions from the community to support the schools can be made to the Howard Young Foundation’s Autism Services fund.

We are also proud to be an internship site for Project SEARCH, a business-led collaboration that leads young adults with disabilities to employment through training and career exploration. It is such a pleasure to see our interns grow in confidence and skills during their internships.

Warmest regards,

Center for Autism

Ascension will address the medical and mental health needs of those on the spectrum. Their highly skilled medical professionals will conduct research, diagnose ASD and provide ongoing resources to those on the spectrum including speech therapy, physical therapy, child psychology and child psychiatry.

People with ASD have challenges with social skills, communication and repetitive behaviors. But while they may have differences from others, they also have unique strengths, and, according to Gregg who is also Governance Board chair for the newly formed Lakeland STAR charter schools, “Focusing on strengths and building confidence are key things we’ll be working on with the students.”

“We have seen exponential growth in the special needs student population in recent years,” said Jim Bouche Principal/Superintendent of Lakeland Union High School. “I’m a big proponent of what is coming in terms of the next best-practice in education and this is it. I have been excited about it since day one!”

LAKELAND STAR CHARTER SCHOOLS

The Lakeland STAR charter schools are part of the Center for Autism and a key ingredient in the effort to better serve students on the spectrum. The schools, slated to open in fall of 2018 with a small inaugural group of 18 students, will focus on individualized education and building on each student’s distinctive strengths. These are concepts borrowed from the very successful Lionsgate Academy in Minnesota.

“What’s exciting about our school is that we’re going to be able to tap into our students’ unique

A U T i S M

Imagine not being able to communicate. Or struggling to understand social cues and norms. What would it feel like if no one understood you, and people picked on you when you longed, instead, for friends?

For children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

(ASD) this is often the reality.

In our 12 northern Wisconsin counties, ASD cases have risen from two to 650 cases in just two years. Yet it currently takes 6 to 12 months to get a diagnosis of ASD here, and even with the diagnosis, there are very few services available to help. This presents our families and communities with a major problem because the earlier a child receives services the better their chances are for future successes.

AUTISM SERVICES FUND

That’s why the Howard Young Foundation is working to improve services for children with ASD. The Foundation established an Autism Services fund in November of 2017. By the end of the following month they had already received two large gifts totaling $350,000.

“The number two issue facing our area is mental and behavioral health,” said Gregg Walker, Howard Young Foundation board member and Lakeland Times publisher. “That makes this effort a perfect fit for the Foundation. It will allow us to provide first rate services to those in our community impacted by ASD.”

Page 7: Defining Moments - Cloudinary...Because of your generosity, last year the Foundation raised $2.1 million. Your contributions, matched in some ... your estate plans or by supporting

AUTiSM

potential and to really maximize their capabilities with a transition focus,” says Eric Mikoleit, Lakeland STAR charter schools director and lead teacher. “Instead of looking at what they can’t do, we’re looking at what they can do and creating an atmosphere and environment that really fosters and accepts their individual strengths so they’re better prepared to go off to college or into the workforce.”

Lakeland STAR School will serve students in grades 7 – 8. Instruction for these middle schoolers will focus on students’ strengths and teaching how to modify behaviors. Lakeland STAR Academy will include grades 9 – 12 and will also focus on students’ strengths as well as independent living and job placement. Twelve local businesses have already committed to providing job placement for students.

PROJECT SEARCHStudents age 18 - 24 can also apply to participate in Project SEARCH. Project SEARCH is a business- led collaboration that leads young adults with disabilities to employment through training and career exploration. A typical day for a Project SEARCH participant includes four hours of hands-on, skills-building work for an actual employer and two hours of instruction.

“They take pride in doing their job well,” Eric said. “They’re being immersed in this work experience. They have a dress code, policies and procedures, just like any other employee here and we hold them accountable. Our interns are very motivated to do the best job possible with their assignments.”

One place that offers Project SEARCH internships is Howard Young Medical Center and it’s making a difference not just for the students, but also for the hospital staff.

“Having the Project SEARCH participants in our building is one of the best things to happen here,” Karen Mikul, RN, said. “Their smiles and positive attitudes brighten up my day as I see them enjoying their new roles.”

Those who are working to get the school up and running anticipate widespread support from the greater community in terms of providing internship opportunities and hiring program graduates who have gained confidence and valuable work skills through their experiences.

As the parent of an autistic child, Gregg is optimistic about the impact the Center for Autism will make in the Northwoods.

“When it comes to autism it’s going to take a community to be involved,” said Gregg. “To be successful we need to build confidence in these uniquely talented kids. We need educators with specialized roles. We need job coaches. We need employers. When these factors are all in place, students will succeed and employers will gain valuable employees.”

By bringing these services for children with ASD to the Minocqua/Woodruff community, families no longer need to relocate to access schools and programs that offer the therapies and education their children need. And these same students will be able to contribute back to the community after completing their education.

d e f i n i n g m o m e n t s 07

When it comes to autism it’s going to take a community to be involved.

• More than 3.5 million Americans live with autism. • Autism in U.S. children increased by 119.4%

from 2000 (1 in 150) to 2010 (1 in 68). • Autism is the fastest-growing developmental

disability. • Cost of lifelong care can be reduced by

2/3 with early diagnosis and intervention. • 35% young adults (ages 19-23) with autism have

not had a job or received postgraduate education.

You can support the Foundation’s Autism Services fund by participating in the FIRST ANNUAL LAKELAND STAR GOLF OUTING to be held June 12, 2018 at Minocqua Country Club,

or by donating to the Howard Young Foundation’s Autism Services fund. Please call the Foundation at 715.439.4005 or visit our Web site at howardyoungfoundation.org to learn more.

Energy pulses. Drums pound. People-powered dragons race across Lake Minocqua and crowds cheer. Is this a dream? No. It’s the Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival to be held at Torpy Park on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Back for the third heart-pounding year, this free event raises funds for the Howard Young Foundation. In the first two years alone, the Festival raised an astounding $500,000, every penny of which goes to fund technology and facility upgrades at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff and Ascension Eagle River Hospital in Eagle River.

From the opening ceremony to awaken the spirits of the dragon boats, to the races to the awards ceremony – this is definitely a fun and family-friendly day! Culturally themed, hands-on children’s activities, Forbidden City Food Court, Dragon Breath Beer Garden and live music on the WXPR Music Stage ensure there is something for everyone.

RACE – ALL SKILL LEVELS WELCOME

While we will have teams who travel far and wide to compete in dragon boat festivals, we are also looking for more community teams. So, send out the alert that you’re looking for 16 – 20 paddlers. They can be your friends, neighbors, family, co-workers, club, knitting circle, camp, church community, bowling team or a mix of people who are all up for exciting team-centered fun to raise funds for a worthy cause.

Competitive dragon boat club teams pay a registration fee of $600. Community teams pay $900 per team (that’s only $45 per person for a team of 20). Everything your team needs to compete is included:

• All necessary equipment including a boat, life vests, paddles and a steersperson/coach

• One practice, scheduled in the week leading up to the event

• Racing a minimum of two times on race day on a 300 meter course

Register your team at www.minocquadragonboat.com using our new, streamlined process. You can also enter in a variety of divisions including community, club, senior and breast cancer survivors, as long as there are at least three teams in the division.

NEW THIS YEAR is a senior division for teams of paddlers all over age 55. After an 84-year-old paddler competed last year, we know age isn’t a deterrent to competition. It’s the spirit of the paddler that counts.

For those who prefer to stay on dry land, let’s fill the beach and bleachers with fiery support for our dragon boat paddlers and the Foundation.

PLEDGE – Support your favorite team or paddler with a pledge of any amount. All pledges are MATCHED!

The Paddlers Pledge Program makes it possible for you to support your teams and paddlers by making a donation directly to the Howard Young Foundation. Every gift made during the campaign will be matched dollar for dollar by the extreme generosity of Ascension, doubling the impact of your donation. Remember, there’s an award for the team that raises the most pledges. Making a pledge can also reduce a team’s registration fee. Team pledges of $1,500-$2,999 qualify for a 50 percent refund of your team’s registration fee. Team pledges of $3,000 or more quality for a full refund of your team’s registration fee. Last year 80 percent of the teams surpassed their registration fee. Two teams raised over $10,000 each!

SPONSOR – SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR THE FESTIVAL AND ITS MISSION

Our sponsors are key to making this community event free and open to the public. They help us put dragon boats on the water, tents on the ground and people in the park. With their much needed

support in the form of financial contributions, in-kind donations, property use, labor and more, we are able to ensure that every dollar raised through this event goes to the Foundation to support its important mission.

Sponsorship levels range from $500 to $15,000. We’d love to add you to our team of sponsors. Please call the Howard Young Foundation at 715.439.4005 to learn more about this impactful opportunity.

VOLUNTEER – MANY TYPES OF ASSISTANCE NEEDED

It takes eight months of planning by our dedicated event committee, and the work of many, many amazing volunteers to make the Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival a success. Our volunteers contribute more than 1000 hours to do so much, from holding boats and handing out paddles to hanging signs and posting race results. With roughly 100 volunteer slots open at a variety of times, you can be sure to find something that’s a fit for your talent and time availability.

We also appreciate the support of local service clubs, including the St. Germain Primetimers for Forbidden City Food Court sales and Lakeland Noon Rotary for coordinating the Dragon Breath Beer Garden this year.

Did You Know?Let’s Tee Off Against Breast Cancer Benefits “We Care” Totes

According to surveys that Karen receives from tote

recipients they are definitely appreciative. One

woman wrote, “Imagine my surprise when getting

a bunch of sad and emotional news from the doctors

and then being handed such a meaningful and

thoughtful gift.”

“In our first year of doing Let’s Tee Off Against Breast

Cancer, we raised $2,800,” recalled Karen.” Last year

we donated $19,000, and this year we are on track to

raise even more thanks to donations from Marthaler

Chevrolet Buick and River Valley Bank. But we still

have room for more teams of golfers.”

Your entry fee of $75 per golfer or $300 per team

includes greens fee, cart fees, range balls, individual

and team prizes, gifts for each player and lunch.

There will also be flag events on several holes. And

when you buy mulligans and magic putts, and bid on

dozens of tempting raffle baskets or sponsor a hole,

you are helping to make the life of a breast cancer

patient a bit more comfortable.

FUN DAY ON THE COURSE, FOR A CAUSE!

Start with a fun day on the golf course with magic putts

and flag events on several holes. Add in decorated carts

and a whole lot of women in pink. Stir in a luncheon

and prizes. Top it off with raising funds to benefit

breast cancer patients. What do you get? The ninth

annual Let’s Tee Off Against Breast Cancer fundraiser.

Let’s Tee Off Against Breast Cancer, sponsored by

Trout Lake Ladies Golf League, is a ladies only 18-hole

scramble with 100 percent of the funds raised going to

provide financial, emotional and educational support

services to breast cancer patients in the Northwoods.

Every dollar raised is invested directly into our local

communities through the Howard Young Foundation.

This year, as with last year, the funds will be used to

provide “We Care” totes to breast cancer patients

going through treatment.

“In our first year doing “We Care” totes, we raised

enough funds to put together 150 totes,” said Karen

Lewis, event chair. “We anticipate giving them all

away before we do our next scramble on June 21.”

"WE CARE" TOTES PROVIDE COMFORT

“We Care” totes are given by nurse navigators

to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients going

through treatment. They are a portable package of

personal care and comfort items that help sustain

dignity, provide comfort and relieve anxiety.

And because many women travel for treatment,

a gas card is included too.

As soon as I said I thought I was having a heart attack, they immediately got me in a wheelchair and into the first open bay. It probably took a minute or less.

LIFE CAN CHANGE IN A HEARTBEAT.

Dave Imlah was working as a school bus driver,

and like anyone who works around children, he

was exposed to a plethora of viruses. That’s what

he thought he was dealing with on April 13, 2017.

After completing his morning route, Dave was

standing by his car when his friend Dave Sloan

stopped to ask if he was okay. It was only after

he paused to really consider the question that

he realized something was seriously wrong.

“I took a second to see how I was feeling,” Dave recalled. “I realized I had pain down my arms and up into my throat. I was sweating profusely, had tunnel vision, difficulty breathing and what felt like something was trying to burrow its way into my chest.”

That’s when he turned to his friend and said, “No. I don’t think I’m OK. I think I’m having a heart attack.”

Dave’s friend wasted no time in getting him into the car and rushing him the two blocks from the bus company to Howard Young Medical Center

emergency department (ED).

OUTSTANDING CARE

As an American Heart Association CPR instructor

and Minocqua Fire Department Emergency

Medical Technician (EMT), Dave is no stranger

to patients with heart attacks and visits to the

ED, but he was still impressed with how quickly

the ED team sprang into action.

“As soon as I said I thought I was having a

heart attack, they immediately got me in a

wheelchair and into the first open bay,”

Dave said. “It probably took a minute or less.”

The team drew blood, started an IV and

administered nitroglycerin.

“The first time they took my blood the

enzymes were high,” he recalled. “The

second time they were even higher.

I was definitely having a heart

My 9-1-1 MomentFrom CPR instructor, EMT and volunteer firefighter to cardiac patient; Dave Imlah NEVER thought a heart attack would happen to him.

attack, even though I was still

in a state of denial about it.”

Dave was rushed to Ascension

St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston

by Ascension Wisconsin Spirit

Medical Transport ambulance

where they did angioplasty and

placed a stent in his heart. They

also did an MRI and determined

that in addition to the heart

attack, he had experienced a

stroke sometime in the near past.

CARDIA REHAB

After being released from the hospital Dave began

cardiac therapy at Howard Young Medical Center

cardiac rehabilitation department. He was feeling

better, but he wasn’t completely out of danger yet.

During a rehab session in July, while hooked up

to the Scott Care Telemetry System, the rehab staff

saw that something was wrong and immediately

told Dave to stop. Something in his heart had

converted the wrong way.

“They got my cardiologist on the phone, and

he was able to see what was going on right away,”

Dave recalled. “I was rushed to the emergency

department where they ran tests and found that

three arteries feeding my heart had become

severely blocked. I needed bypass surgery.”

Dave is a U.S. Navy veteran. After getting approval

from the Veterans Administration for surgery, he

underwent a triple bypass on August 31, 2017 at

Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital. Unfortunately, he

Dave Imlah is an EMT, father and husband as well as a stroke and heart attack survivor and cardiac rehab patient.

had a second stroke before being moved to recovery.

This one was more serious than the first.

ROAD TO RECOVERY

It’s been a long road for Dave, but he is back in cardiac rehab which he expects to wrap up in June 2018. He is working with staff to strengthen his heart and reduce the chances of further cardiac problems.

According to Ashley Stanek, Cardiac Rehab Specialist and Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist, “Dave does aerobic exercises like walking and using a NuStep recumbent cross trainer to build his aerobic tolerance. The goal of the exercise program is to make his heart muscle work as efficiently as possible and to make his everyday life easier.”

While the stroke impacted the right side of his body, Dave can walk with a cane and is back to driving his car. He credits the fact that he is still here to the amazing emergency department, surgery, cardiology and cardiac rehab staff, as well as the state-of-the-art ED and equipment funded through the Howard Young Foundation.

“If Howard Young Medical Center didn’t have the facilities that they have now and the caring people that work there, I wouldn’t be here now, sharing my story with you,” Dave commented. “Thank you for my life. Thank you for letting me continue on with the people that I love in my life.”

Dave has taken some ribbing from a few of his EMT friends because he didn’t recognize his heart attack symptoms right away, though it’s not unusual for people to ignore early signs. Eagle River Ambulance and Cots When an ambulance call comes in, response speed is critical. That’s how lives are saved. And in an area like Eagle River, the ambulances also need to cover a lot of ground.

Ascension Eagle River Hospital has two ambulances and a high-quality, well-trained 24/7 paramedic service covering Eagle River and the surrounding townships. They also provide paramedic intercepts to the towns of Land O’ Lakes, Conover, Phelps, St. Germain and Three Lakes. To say they put on a lot of miles is an understatement. The two rigs together run about 15,000 miles per year, and in 2017 responded to roughly 900 emergency calls!

THE AUXILIARY AND HOWARD YOUNG FOUNDATION MAKING A DIFFERENCEWhen the time came to replace the older rig and to purchase two Stryker Power-LOAD System cots, the Auxiliary Partners of Ascension Eagle River Hospital stepped up through their donations to the Howard Young Foundation.

“The Auxiliary exists to support the Eagle River Hospital and surrounding communities,” said Kathy Viergutz, Community Service Coordinator. “Helping with the purchase of the ambulance and cots is a perfect fit for their mission.”

They also recognized that auto lift cots would provide an added level of safety for our EMS teams and provide a safer experience for patients.

In April 2017, the membership voted and approved paying for the purchases with funds they had raised through their thrift store and Life Direct home alert program and donated to the Foundation’s Eagle River’s Greatest Need fund. Because that fund is part

of the Foundation’s Journey to Excellence Campaign, Ascension agreed to match the Auxiliary’s $125,000 donation, and the $250,000 total needed to make the purchases was secured with unanimous Howard Young Foundation board approval.

“The cots make a huge difference for our EMS staff,” Kathy said. “It takes a huge toll on a person’s back to manually lift and move patients.”

After the new ambulance arrived in December 2017, it was sent out for exterior detailing. In addition to the hospital name and other standard decals, another graphic will recognize the Auxiliary Partners of Ascension Eagle River Hospital for their donation.

CONTINUED SERVICEThe new ambulance was put into service in April 2018. But that doesn’t mean the old one was put out to pasture or sold for scrap. It was donated to Lac Vieux Desert to fill their need for an ambulance, and will continue fulfilling its purpose.

“The funds raised by the Auxiliary and donated to the Howard Young Foundation, and generously matched by Ascension, allows us to continue providing high-quality paramedic-level service,” said Kathy. “Together, we work to provide the best care possible throughout our area.”

Together we work to provide the best care possible throughout our area.

WE’RETICKEDOFF

All legacies have their beginnings.

Ours began with a small group

of women who chose to follow

in the steps of Dr. Kate Pelham

Newcomb, the indomitable

“Angel on Snow Shoes.” Dr. Kate

was responsible for bringing

the Lakeland Memorial Hospital

to our Northwoods area. She

became a legend and we realize

that legends once begun should

not end but be acknowledged for

the foundation they established.

Women of this area honor and

continue her work of promoting

quality healthcare.

A special woman’s legacy has

indeed continued and our

work has made a statement!

To date, well over 200 donors and

volunteers support the council

establishing a Diagnostic Heart

Center and 3D Mammography,

often only seen in larger centers,

right here in our community.

The Women’s Legacy Council, a

committee of the Howard Young

Foundation, is currently working

on a new, very large endeavor

and it is one that we as women

OUR MISSION: To Educate, Engage and Empower women to join together in support of Howard Young Medical Center and its efforts to improve healthcare for residents of and visitors to the Northwoods.

find necessary for our families and loved ones

in our entire outreach area.

WE’RE TICKED OFF!

We all know people who have had Lyme disease

and many who continue to carry and suffer from

it. This not only hurts the patient but also impacts

their family. The issue is actually bigger than Lyme.

There are many tick-borne diseases, and our area

is a hotbed. According to the CDC, Lyme disease

is the fastest growing disease in the U.S. Studies

at Johns Hopkins show the common Elisa test you

receive misses 35-50 percent of culture-proven

Lyme disease. When a tick-borne disease is left

undiagnosed, it is insidious.

The Women’s Legacy Council is ticked off and

they’re doing something about it. The vision is

simple. To create a Tick-Borne Illness Center of

Excellence right here in our community. This

would not be just a treatment center, but a true

research center, led by a team of doctors and

researchers that become recognized as the

most effective in the nation at diagnosing

and treating tick-borne illnesses. And what better

place to study and treat a tick-borne disease than

the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin? The

effective treatment of Lyme appears to be in its

infancy, it's often misdiagnosed and awareness of

the seriousness of the disease is finally becoming

mainstream. Our timing couldn't be better.

Are you passionate about leaving a legacy? Join us.

We will hold a fundraising event June 5 at Minocqua

Country Club to honor all who have come together

to carry on this legacy and kick off this next

big endeavor.

Dr. Kate gave us a great gift and our wish is to

share this gift with younger women who will

continue the great legacy begun so long ago.

Why We GivePassionate about Our Community

Jacqui Monge, RN, MSN, MHA, Benefactor

Jacqui Monge’s Northwoods roots run deep. She

grew up in St. Germain and now lives in Eagle

River. She raised her three children here and is

the Manager of the intensive care unit and Director

of nursing at Howard Young Medical Center.

“I feel very passionate about the community,” Jacqui

said. “And giving to the Howard Young Foundation

is a beautiful way to give back to the healthcare

community, the associates I appreciate and the

Northwoods community at large.”

HELPING THE GREATER COMMUNITY AND THE GREATEST HEALTHCARE NEEDS

Located in Woodruff, the Howard Young Medical

Center serves a large radius in northern Wisconsin.

When people give, when people do things for the

Foundation, they’re helping to meet the greater

community need.

“We go to the Foundation when we really need

some specialized equipment or we see something

our nursing staff needs to assist them in delivering

high-quality care, but maybe hospital funds for it

are not readily available,” Jacqui stated. “When I

give to the Foundation and when I ask for support from the Foundation I feel like it’s always twofold because I am advocating and getting things for the community members as well as my staff and my peers to be able to do their jobs more effectively.”

Jacqui has also been instrumental in associate drives. Donating one paycheck hour a month is an easy way to support the Foundation.

“We run associate campaigns every couple of years. ‘An hour of your pay per month’ is an idea we came up with two or three years ago,” said Jacqui. “I’m a strong advocate of this campaign because I feel like when you give an hour, we’re all giving equally. It can be a small gift per person, but with broad associate support, the dollars really add up.”

Jacqui takes pride in where she works and in giving back. She likes seeing her donations at work.

“I like that the Foundation has helped in purchasing LUCAS™ 2 Chest Compression devices,” she said. “And I’m really excited about the ZeroG® Gait & Balance System that was just purchased for the rehab department. This equipment is going to be instrumental in helping patients feel secure as they work to restore their quality of life confidently and safely.”

Jacqui Monge, RN, MSN, MHA is a Northwoods native and has been a generous supporter of the Howard Young Foundation. She directs her gifts to the Foundation’s Greatest Need fund so that her dollars are matched by Ascension and can be used wherever they are most needed at either Howard Young Medical Center or Ascension Eagle River Hospital.

Why We GivePassionate about Children

d e f i n i n g m o m e n t s 17

Judy & Mike McCoy, Philanthropists Judy and Mike McCoy believe that every child deserves the opportunity for an education and to receive the help they need. That’s why they have generously donated to many causes related to children and adolescents over the years including helping to establish a Miracle Park in their area for children of all abilities, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys and Girls

Club, Hillcrest Family Services, libraries and more.

GENEROSITY TRAVELS FAR

The McCoys live in Dubuque, Iowa, but their generosity extends all the way to northern Wisconsin. “Our granddaughter is on the autism spectrum,” Mike explained. “And when our son Doug, who lives in Minocqua, told us that the Howard Young Foundation was establishing an Autism Services fund, we wanted to help get it off the ground.”

It means a lot to Judy and Mike that the school and medical services provided through the fund will be centered in Minocqua so local families won’t have to move or travel for hours to receive the assistance they need for their children. They shared that they gave not just for their granddaughter, but for all children with special needs.

“We give to help all children. I feel that if you don’t give to children and young adults, give them some guidance and opportunities, we are hurting our future,” said Judy. “There are many parents who can’t really afford to give their children the education and opportunities they need. The Autism Services fund will provide help for those on the autism spectrum.”

The McCoys are grateful that they are able to help others through their donations, and feel that it is their responsibility. “It’s a way to pay back for the good life we have,” they related. “We feel very blessed that we’re able to do that.”

Judy and Mike McCoy live in Dubuque, Iowa, and visit their son’s family in Minocqua as often as possible. Judy is a “semi-retired” homemaker, and Mike is retired President and CEO of McCoy Group, Inc., headquartered in Dubuque. McCoy Group, Inc. is the holding company for several businesses involving transportation and employs 2300+ people nationwide. Their main businesses include Foodliner, Questliner, McCoy Nationalease and Truck Country. Truck Country is the largest Freightliner dealer group in North America, with 21 locations in Iowa, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. Truck Country has satellite parts and service locations in Minocqua.

We give to help all children.

Support for the Howard Young Foundation and the community healthcare it supports runs deep and spreads far. Whether you give to a special fund, donate through an event every year or include us in your will or trust, your generosity makes a lasting impact in the Northwoods. Thank you!

A Legacy of GenerosityLeaving a gift through a will or trust to the Howard Young Foundation has a long lasting impact that can transform the lives of so many in our community. And for those who have given generously throughout their lives, it enables the work they began to continue, even after they’ve passed on. That’s what Betty and Frank Koller did.

The Kollers made their first gift of $25,000 to the Foundation in Jan 1989 in memory of their son, Frank B. Koller. They followed that up with not only annual gifts but also, in 2010, Betty and Frank made a generous planned bequest to the Foundation to ensure that the Ascension Koller Behavioral Health Clinic’s services will continue far into the future. According to HYF Board Chairman Trig Solberg, Frank once said that if it took him 50 years to earn the money, it should take 50 years to give it away, and that planned gifts like this make a lasting impact. It is a fitting tribute to a family whose legacy of generosity continues to benefit those who live in or

visit the Lakeland area, and a great example of creative giving through a bequest.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN HEALTHCARE? THERE ARE MANY WAYS YOU CAN SHARE THAT PASSION THROUGH A PLANNED GIFT:

• Gifts of appreciated securities• Make the Howard Young Foundation a beneficiary of your will or trust, creating a gift that costs

you nothing during your lifetime• Donate life insurance that you no longer need• Gifts of real estate• Life income agreements: Receive income for life from the HYF in return for a charitable planned gift.

A bequest is currently the easiest way to include the HYF as one of the beneficiaries of your estate. For more information about how to include the Howard Young Foundation in your will or trust, call us at 715.439.4005 or visit our website at www.howardyoungfoundation.org. If you've already included the Foundation in your estate plan, please let us know so we can welcome you as a member of the Signature Society.

Wouldn’t it would be wonderful knowing your generosity has helped many patients and their families who come to HYMC and Ascension Eagle River Hospital for generations to come?
