A little background - my
“default settings” are the colours I use to give me a starting point with a p a r t i c u l a r s u b j e c t . Somet ime s s ta r t i n g a painting can feel a little awkward, and these default
“sets” of colours really help me to get going with a painting. It then becomes a ma t t e r o f ma k i n g adjustments from there.

“Low light” clouds:‧ French Ultramarine Blue‧ Cadmium Yellow Medium
‧ Dioxazine Purple‧ Titanium WhiteTIP: Use warmer colours closer to the light source, gradating to cooler colours further away from the light source.

“Midday” clouds:‧ Burnt Umber‧ French Ultramarine Blue‧ Titanium WhiteTip: Start with the darks & gradually add layers of paler colours for highlights.
Tip: Use a cross-hatch brush technique for great results. This versatile technique can also be used to paint & build up texture in trees, foliage and whitewash!
