INSIDE FRONT COVER

This is the first symposium of its type held here. We are excited by the opportunity to share minds, foster relationships, and build new avenues of inquiry. For two days, we are focusing on deep learning, machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies. Our collective aim is to explore the ways in which these technologies are transforming diverse scientific, engineering

and business domains. The symposium has two components. One is an educational component that features workshops led by Nvidia instructors on topics including deep learning for health care and image analysis, genomics, image segmentation and classification, neural networks and more. The second is a series of presentations on how these technologies are being used by faculty and students in institutions of higher

education across North Carolina and beyond, as well as by researchers in industry, e.g., SAS. We are pleased to have an extremely diverse presentation series spanning biomedical engineering, medicine, physics, nursing, mechanical engineering, and many more fields of study. The presentations include talks on medical applications including brain imaging, cancer diagnostics, and sepsis detection, as well as interesting applications in shark detection, decision making in gaming, and quantum many body physics, just to name a few. We hope this gathering and sharing of ideas and knowledge will generate new possibilities for collaboration and accelerate discovery. Thank you for joining us at the Deep Learning,

ML, and AI Symposium. We are looking forward to engaging with so many distinguished colleagues and excited to help foster cutting-edge research. The symposium has been organized and sponsored by the Research Computing group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill along with our partners at Nvidia and the SAS Institute. We would also like to thank our colleagues at Duke University and North Carolina State University for their contributions to making this event a reality. We thank, too, SAS and Nvidia for their generous facilitation and sponsorship. It is difficult to imagine better partners. Indeed, this event is emblematic of the fact that we are one community.
