Since our stormy bout with postal theftin December of last year, so many thingshave happened. At first, we were indisbelief and concern over what mightbecome of our beautiful Family of 12million souls around the world. I walkedthe halls of the Rosary Garden on HollyDrive, the hub of all our activity, night

after night and prayed, wept and worked. We know times are evil andthat the economic decline is upon us;still, we just could not believe thatOur Lady would allow this Familydedicated to her Immaculate Heart, toperish. I blessed the building all aroundand sealed it with the Most PreciousBlood of Jesus, asking in His Name, for

our protection and preservation.St. Thérèse is the great missionary Saint of impossible cases and, under herpatronage many years ago, we hadplaced all our missionary efforts.Through all these years, she has neverfailed us. At first, we appealed for moniesfor the FOREX boxes and so many of

them were packed and went out to ourleaders in the Philippines, through their wonderful FOREX service. Our homeon Sweeny was prepared to receive the work. We felt there was no other option. But, this was not a courageous end tothe effort of a great work for souls, which had planted its roots solidly inevery country  in the whole world.

Your quick and generous responseto our appeal and your prayersrapidly turned things around.

Then, it was time to do a newsletter. The new printers did them in recordtime and for an incredibly low price.100,000 newsletters and envelopes had

to be printed to serve our members. Thebig truck delivered them and they filledup the building. It was then I realized ina very concrete way that we would notbe able to operate as we needed at thelittle home on Sweeny. What options were available to us?

I do not have a job as all my work for

the Living Rosary is volunteer and thelandlord had listed the building at$145,000. Daily, I prayed the Novena toSt. Thérèse and, over and over again,it mentioned that her CONFIDENCE inGod’s mercy was the secret of the huge success she had for souls. The thoughtcame to me that I had not even triedto see if it were possible for us to buy

the building we had rented for 10 yearsat $2,200 each month. Two banks wereapproached and the process begun.Miraculously, we were approved atboth banks. The best offer was ourown bank who gave us 15 years to payat 5.5% interest. Our monthly payment would be $600! Two things remained, two very big things: to make our offer

and to obtain the 20% down paymentrequired for the purchase. We offeredthe owners $105,000. They came downto a firm $130,000. We then counteroffered them $110,000; they camedown to $115,000. Our $110,000 held

firm, as we simply could not do more. They said SOLD! In speaking withone of our lifetime members whohas helped greatly in the past, the20% down payment was donated.

During the time this transaction wasin progress, we made a pilgrimage toMansura, LA, for the great Feast of

St. Philomena. Fr. Chad Partain wasso gracious to welcome us. Our webmaster, Richard Fox, flew down forthe occasion and a wonderful couplefrom NJ, who has taken such an activepart in this work, also joined us. Wehad the great opportunity to visit withFr. Partain about our Youth for PurityCrusade.  Father accepted to take aleading role in this work and shelterit in his beautiful movement of theChildren of Mary. Our friend, who hadjust lost his job, made a great act of faith, and donated the money neededfor the first 50 Mini-Shrines!

Looking back now, we can see the Handof God in all that has happened this year. The devil was at our heels making war with Our Lady’s Rosary Army as we neared our goal of reaching the youth  with the Purity Campaign. Now, the

blessings are bursting forth. Absolutetrust in the goodness of God is veryessential for success of any apostolate. When we measure things by our abilityto do them, little happens. There willstill be many hurdles to overcome, butunited with the ArchConfraternity of St. Philomena and the Sanctuary inMugnano, and directed by Fr. Chad

Partain, this work for our youth willsoon be in schools and homes all overthe world.

Please keep this Youth for PurityCrusade in your good prayers and let ushear if you can help with sponsoringa Mini-Shrine or if you would likeliterature to share with others aboutthis most needed Crusade for the soulsof our children.

PATTI MELVIN, ULRA Director

O Holy Virgin, St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, sweetmodel of evangelical simplicity, hear our prayer. Thereare thousands of millions of men who do not knowand love Jesus Christ. There are whole countries wherepeople still worship the evil one and serve him in viceand wickedness.

You longed to travel the world over to preach thenames of Jesus and Mary, and to raise the standard ofthe Cross on heathen soil. You longed to spread theGospel in all parts of the earth, even to the farthestlimits, and to have been a missionary from the world’screation until the end of time.

Assist now, from Heaven, our Missionaries and blessthem. May they bring forth the fruit of your longingamidst a thousand dangers and difficulties! Amen.

“My God, make use of me ... that through me, You may heal others; that through me,You may teach others; that through me, You may give Yourself to others! ”  St. Thérèse

I am very sorry to be so lax in sending you something to help. Thank you with all my heart for the Mass youhad offered for our family. Let meshare a bit about my mother, bear

with me. In the late 1930’s, she worked in a laundry and ironed 500 shirts ina day at 15 cents a shirt. She married at19 years of age. When she began having

children, her teeth simply crumbledin her mouth and each one had to bepulled out. She had 4 children, no carand no insurance. When I was in the2nd grade, my mom had breast cancer. The treatment then was to put acid onthe cancer and burn it off. They let itburn too deep and it ate into her artery. She nearly bled to death. After this, mom

had migraine headaches for years andsuffered with varicose veins, herniateddiscs, arthritis and cancer of her femaleorgans. She now has many deep lesionsfrom the surgeries which were causingher great pain. I told her about theholy oil. I give St. Philomena creditfor prayers answered. I talked with mom

the other day and she said all the painis gone! Mom is not Catholic, but herfaith in God and miracles is verystrong. Through all her suffering, shehas never complained, never gottenangry at God and never told othersabout her suffering. I love my mom somuch. I am so proud of her!

For years, I had not heard from myfather. His wife got cancer and he gaveme power of attorney of his home inNY. Time passed. Then, a friend wasgoing to a wedding in Florida and shepromised to stop and visit him andsend me a photo. I could see that hiscircumstances were dire. I flew down to visit him. I was shocked at his physicalcondition and his environment. I couldnot persuade him to come back to NY with me. The last thing I did, withoutmuch hope, was to give my father aGreen Scapular. Later, I quit my job and went to Florida to be near my dad. Itook care of his paper work, cleaned

his house and tried to persuade him toget his life in order. But, he continuedunchanged as he had no need of God. I felt very comfortable about what I wasdoing because I saw that my dad was  wearing the Green Scapular around

his neck! Our Lady was at work! I hadto return home. After a short while, I gota call from my father’s doctor and he told me that he did not expect my dadto live. My daughter and I flew down.In the midst of the worst scandal in theChurch’s history, God sent me fourholy priests. Dad was registered at thelocal parish, Most Holy Name of Jesus. He

accepted the grace to go to Confession. He received the Sacrament of ExtremeUnction. Father Tobin gave my dad an Apostolic Blessing and he died peace-fully. Dad had a beautiful Funeral Massand burial, with full military honorsat the National Cemetery in Sarasota. Our Lady keeps her promise for those who wear the Green Scapular.

I am currently serving time in theBuckingham Prison and the Rosaryhas been a great comfort to me. It hashelped me overcome many problems. In the beginning, before I convertedto the Roman Catholic Faith, I did notunderstand the need or use of theRosary, but I prayed it anyway and it worked! I am a lot calmer, my worldlythoughts and sins are much less. I livelike a monk and would like to dedicatemy life to God. Father Kelly is ourchaplain here. He is a nice older Irishpriest. You are in my prayers.

Here is Manuela from Belize. We hadthe marvelous opportunity to meetand visit with Manuela who is a greatRosarian for the schools and poor  villages in her country. She was inHouston for a seminar and medical

evaluation. Three years ago, her foot was crushed in a car accident. She willbe going for her fourth surgery thismonth. She will be taking a leadingrole for the Living Rosary in Belize. Hermission began by invitation. Manuelahad lost her car keys. She had lookedeverywhere for them. Then, a friendtold her about St. Anthony. She did not

know of him, but after he insisted, sheprayed, ‚OK, St. Anthony, if you arethere, please help me find my keys.‛She began looking all over again, inthe places she had already looked. She did not see them at first becausethere was a Rosary on the table coveringthem. A Rosary that had not beenthere minutes before. She picked up theRosary and under it were her keys;then she heard a distinct voice say,‚The Rosary is the Key to Heaven!‛From that day forward, Our Lady hasshowed her ways to spread the Rosaryand it is her great mission today. Her visit to us was a window opened by theQueen of Heaven. < Patti Melvin >

I have been wearing my Medal on achain around my neck for over a yearnow and it has transformed my life! Iam not so anxious, am much healthierand I don’t get so angry or dwell onthe past. I want to say, ‘Thank You’ for all the  work you do for souls through thisspecial Apostolate. I hope my donationhelps. The daily Rosary is part of ourfamily’s prayer life. It is because of your encouragement that we stay committedto this wonderful prayer. I have sevenchildren and seven grandchildren. Theyall practice the Faith and we pray thatthe Rosary will be a vital part of theirdaily lives because it is so important. Ibelieve it has protected us from so much

seen and unseen danger in this greatspiritual battle we are all currentlyliving. Like so many others, it feels like we are just hanging on by a thread, butthe Rosary is the glue that holds ustogether with each other and with ourCatholic Faith. I love how you honorSt. Philomena and St. Therese. Thank you for your ‘YES.’ < Patti – WA >

Things are better here. My son wasreleased from the hospital and is working as a math teacher for a holypriest in a small Catholic school; meand my husband are healing. I amproud to be a part of this beautiful workof God, to be a link in this prayer chain

The  American Humanist  Association (AHA)  produces a bi-monthly journaland was given legal status by the U.S.Supreme Court. Their goal is to freeone’s philosophy from the traditionalconstraints of theistic belief. Organizedin 1867 under the leadership of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the AHA appealed notonly to those theological reformers

within the Unitarian Church but also tonon-Christian liberals. It is sometimesreferred to as a “New Religion”  which incorporates naturalism, materialism, rationalization and socialism:

 A N ew F aith for a N ew  Age!

It was designed to be ever evolving andcompatible with the social schema of our present day humanity. It was the  AHA who argued that Bible study inpublic schools violated the separationof Church and State. The Supreme Courtupheld this policy of religious neutrality. They defend the right to abortion andit is they who did much to popularizecremation and humanistic memorial

services. In 2003, they secured a religioustax exempt status, as a non-profit,publically supported educationalorganization. Their goal is to promotethe spread of Humanism and refine itsphilosophy.

In their self-definition, God does notexist and it is a destructive illusion tobelieve in Him. Man marks the highestpoint to which nature has evolvedand he must rely entirely on his ownresources. They decry creation and have worked very hard to promote the theoryof evolution. They believe that every-thing changes, so there can be noenduring or permanent values. JohnDewey, probably the most influential  American philosopher in the field of education, is the author of the firstHumanist Manifesto in 1933! Forty yearslater, a second Humanist Manifesto wasissued. Among its major tenants are these:“... traditional dogmatic or authoritarian religions that place Revelation, God,ritual or creed above human need orexperience do a disservice to the

Page 10: Dedicated Decades Winter 2011

10

human species. Humans are responsiblefor what we are and what we willbecome. No deity can save us; wemust save ourselves. The right tobirth control, abortion and divorceshould be recognized.”

The members of the AHA are placedstrategically in highly sensitive areas, and are internationally funded. Theyhave key positions to influence publicopinion. While they say, “Let us do awaywith all forms of intolerance,” they areadamantly intolerant of all religion.Up until the 1960’s, Christianity, with

a unanimous voice, had taught an ethicof self-control, self-denial, encouragedreparation, sacrifice and prayer.

The great religious upheaval of the16th Century contributed to the longterm decline of religion and the riseof secularism in the West. In the midstof continually multiplying numbers

of groups claiming to have the truth,it became difficult for people tobelieve that any Faith could be true. Another cause of the fragmentationof Christianity was the growth of science. Religion was perhaps notopenly attacked but it was disbelieved. It ceased to be important. The dramaticsuccess of the new scientific discoveries

gave man an exhilarating sense of self-confidence and self-importance. If  itcould not be proven by science, then itdid not exist. In the 18th Century, theintellectuals began to advocate religioustolerance. In part, they said it was out of respect for the individual’s conscience. In part, however, it was out of the convictionthat all religious beliefs were equally

false and, thus, all should be equallytolerated. Voltaire rejoiced that, ina society where there were manyreligious groups, all of them wouldbe weak. The French Revolution of 1789 accomplished many of its goalsof enlightenment, sweeping awayby violence all the social institutions

to which the intellectuals objected, including the Church! Their goal toremake the world in the name of humanity gave birth to a murderousand destructive fanaticism. It was the“Committee of Public Safety”  which

implemented the Reign of Terror inthe name of humanity.

The 19th Century gave birth to threenew revolutionary systems of thought, those identified with Karl Marx, CharlesDarwin and Sigmund Freud. Althoughdifferent in many aspects, they all  were based on materialism. Humanexistence was described, by economicnecessities, biological evolution, andsexual urges. These three gave greatimpetus to Secular Humanism and allthree dispensed with God. Atheism cameinto its own during that Century. “If God did exist, He must be destroyed!”The new Humanism embodied ademonic urge to negate and destroy.Once God had been denied, man couldachieve true freedom by denying allmoral constraints on himself and inventhis own morality. Mass communicationscame into full swing. Books filled withthis propaganda flooded the cities, schools and homes. Compulsoryeducation was established and allthe youth would be impregnated withSecular Humanism.

All these forces, plus the prosperity of the masses, transformed personal valuesand beliefs of countless Americans. Theyproved less and less able to say ‘NO’ tothemselves and did not want othersto say ‘NO’ to them. Spouses divorced, pregnancies were aborted, people of allages made free use of drugs merely toexperience something new and thrilling. The world was experienced as man’s

Page 11: Dedicated Decades Winter 2011

own creation. Belief in God wouldcontinue in some general way, but Hisexistence made little or no differencein their lives. They became SecularHumanists in practice, whateverthey might have called themselves.

Automobiles gave people a great senseof self-reliance. There was little roomfor God, prayer or obedience to God’sdivine Law. Young people rebelledagainst established authority and allrules and demands for obedience.Students gained the right to cohabit indormitories, use drugs and all rulespertaining to personal behavior and

dress, were abolished. Sadly, mostparents were living a compromisinglife of self-indulgence feeling that, after  years of hard work, they deserved it.The obvious result was the breakdownof families. By the late 1970’s, thisreached epidemic proportions. Thenumber of divorces equaled that of marriages, and single parent families

were countless. In over three-fourthof all households, both parents workedoutside the home. The upbringing of the children was given over to schools, the very breeding grounds of secularhumanism. Values clarification is ateaching technique in the schools toundermine the values children havelearned at home from their parents

who are the chief means by whichreligious belief is handed down.

S elf R eigns As G od!

Catering to the whims of self hasbecome an obsession. Self is entitledto do whatever it wants and restraints onthose desires are almost always unjustand unhealthy. The revolution goesdeeper still. It amounts to a repeal of the entire Christian ethic of unselfishlove and self-denial. The family is seenas the bastion of Christian values and,as such, it is under ferocious attack.

Woman’s liberation is a deadly blowto family and religion. Life is reduced toan endless quest for personal fulfillment.

Some clergy have even taken up the newreligion of Enlightenment. Liberalismin religion has never been a way intothe Faith; it has always been a wayout of the Faith!

Pope Saint Pius X in 1907 condemnedliberalism in the name of Modernism. Itis the way by which secularism enters theChurch. They are apostles of unbelief, endlessly telling believers that theyshould no longer accept this or thatteaching of Christianity. In the end, allof them are negated! Christians trust inGod. Humanists trust in themselves.

Secular Humanism promises earthlyhappiness. Totalitarianism is a system which seeks to shape and control everyaspect of people’s lives in the interestof creating a perfect worldly society.Religion in the modern world has beenthe strongest and most tenaciousbulwark against both. In the end thehumanist system betrays man. The

Humanist’s acts of defiance andheedless disregard end by enslavingthe individual to his passions. Sinceman was created by an all-wise andall-loving God, he cannot be freeor truly happy except in lovingobedience to His Creator’s Will .

“Y ou shall know the T ruth, And the T ruthW ill set you F ree!”

In the town of Siroki-Brijeg in Herzegovina, not

one single divorce has been recorded among its13,000 inhabitants. For Centuries, because of pressure of the Turks and the Communists, thepeople suffered cruelly as their Christian Faith wasalways threatened. They knew, through experience, that salvation comes through the Cross of Christ! It does not come from humanitarian aid, peacetreaties or disarmament plans.

T  he S ource of S alvation

I s the C ross of C hrist!   These people possess a wisdom that does not allowthem to be duped over questions of life and death. That is why they indissolubly link marriage with theCross of Christ. When a young couple is preparingfor marriage, the priest tells them that they havefound their Cross. And, it is a Cross to be loved, to beearned, a Cross not to be thrown away, but to becherished. The Cross represents to them the greatestlove and the Crucifix is the treasure of  every home. When the bride and groom set off for the church, they bring with them a Crucifix. The priest blesses the Crucifix, which then takes a central role during their exchangeof vows. The bride places her right hand on the Crucifix and the groom placeshis hand over hers. Thus, the two hands are bound together on the Cross. Thepriest covers their hands with his stole as they proclaim their vows to be faithfuluntil death. The bride and groom do not then kiss each other, they rather kissthe Crucifix. They know they are kissing the source of their love. If the husbandabandons his wife or the wife her husband, they let go of the Cross. If they abandonthe Cross, they are left with nothing! They have lost everything for they haveabandoned . After the wedding, the newlyweds bring the Crucifix to theirhome and give it a place of honor. It becomes the focal point of family prayer. When trouble arises or conflict breaks out, it is before the Cross they seek help. They do not go to a lawyer or consult a fortune teller or astrologer. No, they gostraight to Jesus on the Cross, get on their knees and pour out tears and prayersand exchange their forgiveness of one another.

They will teach their children to kiss the Cross every night and not to go off tosleep like pagans. When at night they kiss the Cross, they know that Jesus is holdingthem in His arms and there is nothing to be afraid of. Their fears and differencesmelt away, in their kiss of Jesus on the Cross.

After the Church, the family is the mostsacred place on earth. Your participationin the ULRA and love for the Mother of God is evidence of your desire to offer yourselves as lay apostles in advancingthe Kingdom of Our Eucharistic Christamong men. You are pioneers. The taskto which you have committed yourselvescalls for enthusiasm, and the zeal anddedication of missionaries. You are to becongratulated! Parents have a divinelyappointed mission in their natural fieldof influence in the home and family. Here, they reign over the heart of theNation and decree the ideals that shapethe destiny of a generation! When thoseideals are Christian, the home is a replicaof Nazareth. The work of re-establishingChrist and Christian ideals must beginin the home.

Today, the soul of Christianity has beenreplaced by a new spirit. Every parentcan serve as a leader in this battle. Every wife can be an influence to her husband, and husband to his wife, both can be anexample to their children. Every Catholicparent must accept the teachings of HolyMother the Church on marriage. Thedignity of womanhood and the nobilityof manhood rest upon that teaching.Marriage is a contract that implies a

right to life-long companionship, mutual support in common interests, common sorrows, common joys; acontract that implies parent-hood,a contract, therefore, which excludesall thought of divorce, trial marriage, and contraceptive birth control. To aChristian, marriage is more than anatural contract. In the great charity

of Christ, marriage has been elevated tothe dignity of a Sacrament. This meansthat marriage has been taken out of thecivil courts and placed in the Sanctuary. It means that Our Divine Savior has shedHis Precious Blood that married lovemay be sanctified, your children willknow the fear and love of God, and yourunion shall not fail. When husband and

wife realize that Christ died that theirunion shall not fail, surely they cannotrefuse to bear the trials of life, yes, tocarry a cross and suffer a crucifixionin all patience rather than succumbto the tragedy of a broken home.

free from mortal sin. Accept this pointin simple faith and understand that God will help you meet your responsibilityas spouse and parent if you put noobstacle in His way, if you preserveHis Life in your soul and are in the

state of Sanctifying Grace. You may getdiscouraged and feel overwhelmed  with the burdens of your marriage, but try to see these temptations asopportunities to prove your love forGod and your family. They are preciouscoins of gold when borne with patienceand love, that will help you to gainmerit and win Heaven.

Marriage is the most challenging vocation there is and, yet, we find nocontinuing education courses on it.Here, we give lines to live by, theLiturgy of married couples. Each willfoster the successful flowering of thesacred covenant of Marriage. The familymust be the one who shows the worldthat God is truly Our Father!

Using these guidelines, often and well, will strengthen your family and bring you peace. Say daily, morning and night,if not more often, ‚I love you.‛ Say it,mean it and show it.

Say often, Thank you. Be specific  when you say this, thank you for a

great meal, thank you for taking timeto listen, for fixing something, repairingthe door, thank you for caring, thankyou for putting up with me. Findingthings to be thankful for and voicingthat thanks will cultivate in your marriedunion gratitude to God and gratitudefor each other. Being ungrateful isirrational. You may express your love

and gratitude by a phone call, in anote, by a hug. You know, there are athousand different ways. Find the goodin everything you can, seek it out, talkabout it, think about it.

Say with sincerity, ‚I am sorry.‛ Sayit, mean it and state it in a way that ishonest. I am sorry for taking you for

granted, for not tell you about thaterrand, for forgetting to call when I was going to be late, for failing to ask  your advice, whatever it might havebeen that caused pain and frustrationto your spouse. And then say, ‘Please

forgive me.’ By saying this, you aretaking responsibility for the injurydone. The mercy of God is medicine. To God we owe everything, He owesus nothing. What do we give to God,next to nothing!  What does He giveto us, everything! No matter how weoffend Him, He is willing to forgive us.He was nailed to a cross and died that

we might have forgiveness. Who are weto withhold mercy to another? Who are we to withhold forgiveness? We have tobe willing to apologize sincerely and askforgiveness and be willing to forgive.

Ask your spouse about her (his) day. Itis important to you and your marriage.Catch up on the activities, challenges,

joys and sorrows of the day beforedinner if possible, or after. You musttake time to be interested. Once youask the question, give your undividedattention to what is shared.

Ask often, ‘How can I help you?’ This will usually get an immediate response. Then you must say, ‚Ok, I’d be glad

to!‛ Say it, learn to mean it and findjoy in doing it. We entered marriageto be like Christ. We are called to lovein a way that is life giving - throughsacrifice.

Ask once a month or when possible,‚Will you go out with me on a date?‛ Make the plans before you ask thequestion as to the place, the flowers, the restaurant, the time. This is allabout renewing the well-springs of love. Make memories now as you did when you were first married. You maynot feel like it, but love is much morethan a feeling. When feelings die, don’t conclude that love is dead. Feelingsare like the weather, they come and

go. While we cannot deny our emotions, for they are real and powerful, wemust not let them rule our lives. Ourcovenant to God and each other isstronger than any feeling. That spouseof yours in the Hands of the Divine

Sculptor is going to make you a saint.Let Him  chip away at all your roughedges. We are pilgrims on this planetfor as long as we are here. We are inexile on our way from earth to Heaven.God uses suffering to make us saints, and make sure we reach Home safely.

Family life must include prayer. Familyprayer is the greatest source of peacein the home. Mary must be the Queenof your home. When we pray the Rosary

we are simply speaking to God’s ownMother. There is no sinner so hardened  with crime, no heart so broken withsorrow, nor anyone so weak that Mary will not save and comfort them if only

they asked her. Mary gave us the Rosaryto make us good, to make us strong, tomake us happy and to make us holy.Let all the members of the family maketheir consecration to the ImmaculateHeart of Mary and wear the Scapularas a sign of that consecration. TheMiraculous Medal is a very powerfulprotection and source of Grace, let it

be worn by all. Place holy water fontsby the entry and exit of the house and inevery room. This powerful sacramentaldrives out the devil, remits venial sinsand helps the Souls in Purgatory.Enthrone your home to the SacredHeart of Jesus. Have a Crucifix in theLiving Room, and a nice picture of the

Sacred Heart of Jesus and the ImmaculateHeart of Mary. Prepare a place for prayer  where you gather each night to prayas a family. Go regularly to Confession. This is so vital. The priest is there todispense with the utmost generosity

the mercies of God to man. The poorsinner kneels at the feet of God’s representative, laden with failings and weaknesses, pain and sorrow. He laysdown his heavy burden and his sinsare swallowed up in the abyss of God’s mercy; fears, doubts and remorse arelifted from his soul. Much neededcounsel may be sought. Make the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass the highlight of  your life, your week and your family.Go to Mass as often as you possibly can.In every Mass, Heaven comes to earth; we are surrounded by angels and saints. Who wouldn’t want to go to Mass! Weall want to go to Heaven - we just don’t  want to die first. As Catholics, we don’thave to die in order to go to Heaven.

All we have to do is go to Mass, this isheaven on earth!

Modesty in your family is important:Modesty in dress, speech and action.Show respect for one another and forGod. At least 15 minutes of spiritualreading should be done each day. Inorder to live our Faith, to defend ourFaith and to teach our Faith, we mustknow it. We cannot love God if we donot know Him. To be a Catholic familytakes discipline, courage, sacrifice andlove. If you cannot do all of the thingsmentioned above, do one of them.Simply begin, have a desire to do themall, and your prayer will be answered. Our beloved country must return toChrist, and the surest and sweetest way to make our homes a veritablefortress of grace is through living a vibrant Catholic life.

T hou F ather of the P oor!  T reasures which endure!  L ight of all that live!

E very good prayer increases a man’s riches in Christ. It isthrough the Holy Spirit that the blessings of Redemption

can be brought to the world and the intentions of theSacred Heart of Jesus realized. Devotion to the Holy Ghostfills one of the greatest needs in the life of the faithful today.

Our times are times of unbelief, in which the father of lies celebrates triumphs ingodless, hell-inspired philosophies; but the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth! He canconvince the world of sin and justice and judgment. These are times in whichinfernal hatred separates Nations and classes of men. The Holy Spirit, Who is theSpirit of Love, unites all men as members of the great family of God. Ours aretimes of unprecedented destruction of spiritual and material values. But, the

Creator Spirit Who brought order and beauty into the universal creation at thebeginning, Who called into existence the supernatural order of life and light, of love and harmony and peace, can reconstruct the world! He can kindle the Lightof Truth in the darkness of ignorance and sin; He can call life out of death. Hecan spiritualize the minds of men and direct them to divine and heavenly things.

The world desperately needs the Holy Ghost today. We need His Sanctifying Gracethat we may live. Do we have family that has wandered from the Church or isin danger of doing so; someone who has not received the Sacraments formany years, or who lives in an invalid marriage, someone whose childrenneed to be baptized? Do we know souls who are infected with the false ideasof modern materialism?   Are these not excellent reasons for us to turn to theHoly Spirit for help? The spiritual fruits of a Novena to the Holy Ghost are anincrease of Grace, the very life of the soul.

“S eek ye, therefore, first the K ingdom of G od and H is justice, And all things shall be added unto you.”

We have prepared a beautiful, full color, 16-pageNovena booklet to the Holy Ghost which is truly

a spiritual treasure in our day and should befound in every Catholic home. For every offeringof $25 made to the ULRA for our missionary work, we will send you, free of charge, this powerfulprayer booklet. We pray it will be the foundationof daily prayer in your home to the Spirit of Truth!

In an effort to promote purity and innocenceamong the youth and to enlist them in the causeof Christ, the Universal Living Rosary Associationand the ArchConfraternity of St. Philomena havejoined together to promote the St. Philomena’sYouth for Purity Program. In every fight, an allyis needed and the Church has proclaimed throughthe Sovereign Pontiffs that St. Philomena, the young Virgin-Martyr, is the ally needed to help

the youth in their struggle for integrity of heart. The program aims to introduce St. Philomena, the power of her intercession and the integrityof her example to the youth of the 21st century. Her inspirational example is evenmore fitting now, in our time, as we see more and more clearly that the temptationsand vices of her day have been recast in our own time - power, greed, lust andthe destruction of the family unit.

The program has two parts: In the first phase, special Mini-Shrines will be sent to

any youth group, school or parish that registers to take part. The Mini-Shrine willcontain a statue of St. Philomena as well as literature and information concerningher life and witness. Additional devotional material will also be included that thechildren can take home and share with the family. A detailed curriculum is includedfor the group leader so that the group can ‘walk' through the literature andpresentations together. The Mini-Shrine program is designed to introduceSt. Philomena as an ally in the struggle against sin and temptation - particularlysins against purity. The role of the Saints as allies and friends is highlighted. Thatintroduction leads to a presentation on the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the

necessity of true devotion to her as our model of discipleship. The example of  Ven. Pauline-Marie Jaricot is presented as a wonderfulmodel of conversion and service. The Mini-Shrineprogram ends with a presentation on the true presenceof Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. In this way, highlighting St. Philomena’s role as intercessor and ally, the Blessed Mother as our model of discipleshipand the living presence of Our Lord in our midst, the program acts as a short retreat for the youth,

focusing their attention on the power of the Faith.

The program aims to foster devotion to St. Philomenabut also encourages the youth to form Children ofMary circles in their schools and parishes. PopePius IX declared St. Philomena to be the patronessof the Children of Mary and the Living Rosary, and the  ArchConfraternity of St. Philomena. All three have

agreed to be co-sponsors of a revived ‘Sodality’ movement. Fr. Chad Partain, thechancellor of the Diocese of Alexandria in Louisiana, has been named to spear-head the program and act as the Director of the Congregation of the Children of Mary. Literature is included in each Mini-Shrine detailing the process of how toform a Children of Mary circle and what is entailed so that the work of spiritualformation may continue. Each circle, composed of at least five members, will be

registered with both the Living Rosary Association and with the ArchConfraternityof St. Philomena. In this way, the children enrolled will share in the spiritualblessings and indulgences attached to those organizations. Each child registered will assume responsibility for praying one Decade of the Rosary each day and forinvoking the aid of St. Philomena. The Children of Mary circles will meet on thefirst Saturday of the month to foster devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Maryand to fulfill Our Lady’s requests for prayer and penance.

The meetings will be designed to foster the

role of the congregation. The Children ofMary is a Catholic Lay Association that has,for its main purpose, the spiritual formationof its members. It takes for its model thespirituality of St. Louis de Montfort and hisideal of Total Consecration to Jesus throughMary. The work of the congregation is tofoster holiness in the youth by giving themsolid formation and peer support under the

mantle of the Blessed Mother. The sign of membership is the MiraculousMedal worn on a broad blue ribbon - the mottoof the congregation is:

‘Monstra esse teMatrem’  ‘S how thyself a Mother’

Regular updates, meeting guides, prayers, and registration forms will be madeavailable on the Children of Mary website to be launched in November of 2011.

Please pray for thisendeavor that we may

form in our time ...

The parental blessing is as old as humanity. Priests have the authority to bless allthe faithful; thus, too, parents have the right to bless their children. Dear Parents, every time, you raise your hands in benediction over your children, you drawdown upon them the blessing of God for the good of their bodies and souls. Theearly Christians, daily, blessed their children with the Sign of the Cross. Yourhappiness and joy does not consist in wealth, but in having good children. TheSign of the Cross which you make upon your children’s forehead will never beeffaced. The blessing will never be lost. No passion will be able to obliterate itcompletely. The parental blessing effects another great good; it is a sacred bond  which unites the father and mother in everlasting fidelity, in perfect love andharmony. The Sign of the Cross, daily, reminds them of the solemn obligationtaken before the Altar to remain faithful even unto death.

The blessing: Have your children kneel before you; place your right handon the head of each as you repeat: GOD BLESS YOU, MY CHILD! Then, you maytake holy water and, with the thumb of the right hand, make the Sign of theCross upon the forehead and lips and breast of the child, saying: “IN THE NAME

OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY GHOST." The child mayanswer: “GOD REWARD YOU!"

You may send your blessing to those away from home. The parental blessing mayextend over hill and vale, and will rest on the children wherever they may be.Post your blessings in a letter: “Your father and mother bless you.” The blessingmaybe given in the evening after night prayers. It may be given oftener; when thechild leaves the house for school or on a journey. It should be given solemnly onthe day of First Holy Communion, on the wedding day, on a child’s entrance into

Religion or to a son about to ascend the Altar for the first time. Finally, dearparents, bless your children when lying on your deathbed. You may not be ableto bequeath any great possessions to your children, but one thing you can givethem: the heritage of your blessing. It is better to be blessed than to be rich!

Fathers! Mothers! Bless you children daily, most especially in these present times  when the dangers surrounding the youth threaten their innocence and theirEternal Salvation! “I BLESS YOU, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THESON AND OF THE HOLY GHOST, THAT GOD MAY BLESS YOU!”

I am sending you some pictures taken at the SacredHeart Catholic Church, Abuja, Nigeria where manypeople were assigned a Decade. There was a lot of publicity so people from other parishes and diocesescame. In fact, all the presidents from other churcheshelped set up a superb meeting, as for the very first

time we had something to eat and drink for they  were really happy with the Living Rosary for thegood work it is doing in spreading the devotion tothe Blessed Virgin Mary.

After Mass, the parish priest, in his message, conveyed hishappiness with what we were doing and encouraged us to domore to reach out to other people who are in dire need of our united prayer. He has worked in many places but has notcome across any society that is doing this much in spreading

the devotion of Mary. I visited the HIV-AIDs victims. Theyare all happy to be a part of the Living Rosary.

< Michael – Nigeria, AFRICA > Our people have little money to buy books or Sacramentals. We thank you verymuch for all the spiritual treasures you send for our members in Romania.  It is with great pleasure I wish to report my visit to Sri Lanka along with ourSpiritual Director, Fr. Prasad Ignatius (who was appointed by our Archbishop,Most Rev. A.M. Chinnappa) from July 29 to August 1, 2011.

F r. Andrew Uthayadas, Animator of Sri Lanka organized a Living Rosary Rally on30th July. About 150 members participated. The role of Our Lady in the Salvation of mankind and the Children of Mary’s cooperation in the Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart was the theme of our Spiritual Director’s talk to the members.

On August 1, we met Most Rev. Malcolm Ranjith, Cardinaland Archbishop of Sri Lanka and discussed about the ULRAfunctioning in our country and recommended the petition of Fr. Andrew, Animator of Sri Lanka for the appointment of aNational Spiritual Director. The Cardinal was happy to appointFr. Prasad Ignatius as the Spiritual Director of the Living Rosary in Sri Lanka andhe is very supportive in spreading the devotion of the ULRA in the country. It was a fruitful and worthy meeting.

T he prayers and reflections during the Rally were conducted in the local dialect,Sinhala and in Tamil, followed by Eucharistic benediction. Brother Joseph Rocheand his Indian Spiritual Director, Fr. Prasad Ignatius, had boosted the program. The success of the ULRA Rally in Sri Lanka is due to the constant love and supportof our ULRA Director, Patti Melvin.

We thank you, dear Benefactors, for helping us spread the LivingRosary in Sri Lanka. We keep youin our prayers and in the SacredMasses too.

F r. Prof. John Appiah Poku, on my left, is aSenior Lecturer, School of Medical Science,University of Science & Technology, Kumasiand on my right is Fr. Dr. Augustine Ntim

Duodu, Vice Rector of St. Joseph’s CatholicSeminary, Mampong. They are very wellrecognized as the Spiritual Directors of theULRA in Ghana, after Archbishop EmeritusDr. Peter Sarpong and are very active andmuch supportive to the work of the LivingRosary. They try always to travel from their various destinations to celebrate theMass of St. Philomena with us on every feast day of the Saint at our St. Peter’sCathedral Basilica. This they have done for over the past 20 years now. They say, they

deserve  NO recommendation from anyone as they do all because St. Philomena istheir own beloved Sister who intercedes for and refuses them  NOTHING theyask through her intercession. Patti, you can see both our good Priest members atthe Altar offering the Mass of St. Philomena during her last feast on May 25, 2011.

During the 1990’s, both Fathers John and Augustine use to accompany ourPreaching Team for some weekendtrips to other Parishes and that was

so very encouraging but, nowadays, due to their heavy schedules, theycannot continue. In fact, they havedone a lot for the fast spreading of the ULRA devotion here in Ghanamore than any other Priest in thecountry. They do much to inspire mein the Living Rosary work in Ghana and other places. Moreover, they have takenthe responsibility to celebrate Holy Masses for the special intentions of the

ULRA, both spiritual and temporal. They love Our Lady, the Rosary, ULRA andSt. Philomena as well as you, Patti and me! You and your wonderful Apostolateare always in their hearts. Many people call them Saint Philomena’s Brothers inGhana, as I am also called Anthony Philomena. Let us continue to keep them inour daily prayers.

You may see how the work is been done at our Center.Michael, Sylvester and Gabriel are so busy at typing theenrollments and filling out Decade Cards for new members.

You can see how we sort out / arrange devotional items for making the packages. You may see, after packaging, how we try to decorate the packages or boxes andaddress label them for mailing. We finally pack them into the St. Philomena’s van,and then to the Post Office for special mailing. So sorry, the little camera I usecannot capture indoor pictures clearly. You may see me behind a lot of boxes inmy office at the St. Philomena’s House!

One of the schools, we had the privilege to visit lastmonth was the Martyrs of Uganda Jubilee School atOdeneho-Kwadaso. We talked much about Purity tothe students who are already members of the ULRA. You can see Sr. Cecilia Salifu, headmistress with someof the staff members in the group photograph.

The enemy is within our gates. We mustidentify him and recognize him for whathe really is and strive with all our mightto crush and expel him from our heartsand our homes. Some feel the enemy is

only political or merely an economicsystem. Be not mistaken that the enemyof your family, Holy Mother the Churchand our country, is atheistic materialism, secular humanism, Communism! Itstalks our cities, community housing, residential neighborhoods and country

villages. It’s tools are terror, murder, lies, deceit, oppression, cruel suppression of

governments, enslavement of millions, separation of families, crisis, unrest, conflict and destruction. It is arevolution against the established order which has at its heart to silence moralauthority and enslave the world.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen spokecourageously and tirelessly exposing thefundamental nature of Communismand our duty to use all our resourcesand energy to oppose it. Every memberof the Communist Party has pledged tocommit treason against the USA andhelp to overthrow our Constitution byduplicity and deceit. The CommunistParty is the largest atheistic organizationin the world. It is determined, dedicated,

well organized and deadly! We must useall our resources to stop this lethalfoe. If we do not win, the rest of the  world will be swallowed up by thissatanic force and we will lose all our

freedoms. Their goal is to subjugate, dominate and remake the entire world,by subversion if possible and by forceif necessary! Rome is the big prize forCommunism. Our Lady of La Saletteforewarned us in 1846 and Our Ladyof Fatima in 1917. Our Lady of Fatimamentioned 1960 as being critical inthe battle for souls. Sister Lucia later

lamented that neither the good nor thebad have taken to heart or heededMary’s pleas.

We could not realize the implications of Our Lady’s message at that time but, as we look back, it is painfully clear. We view woefully the Vatican-Moscow Agreementof 1962 in which Vatican officials formallypledged to Soviet counterparts that theChurch, henceforth, would refrain fromany condemnation of Communism! This pledge has been honored withoutexception to the present day. As such, itconstitutes TREASON! Failure to opposethe satanic force of Atheistic Communismcan hardly be short of sin! ArchbishopSheen was called to Rome in 1963 and

Page 34: Dedicated Decades Winter 2011

ordered to be silent against Communismby the Holy Father. The great foe of Communism was silenced and PopePaul VI publicly proclaimed the UnitedNations to be the hope of the world!THIS IS HISTORY. Please God, we can

learn from it.

We are on the battlefield and needsome deadly serious guidelines to helpus win this war. Satan is a deceiver forhe is the father of lies and there is notruth in him. If he can get us to believehis lie, then he can begin his work inour life. He questions God’s word and

His goodness. He is a rebel against God,“You will be like unto God,” he tellsEve. God accomplishes His work throughTruth, Satan through lies, but he alwaysmasquerades his lies as God’s Truth. His target is our mind and his goal isto divert us from doing God’s Will. God’s  Will is not our duty, but our delight; itis our nourishment! Beware, we cannot

reason or dialogue with Satan. Man’s wisdom is no match for Satan is cunning. We must study our Faith, understandour duty to God, and make time forprayer, without which we will be easyprey for the devil.

B e S ober!  B e Alert!

B e P rayerful!

T he devil, our adversary, prowls

about like a roaring lion,

seeking whom he may devour.

If Satan cannot attack our mind, he ishappy to attack and destroy our body which is God’s Temple, the tabernacleof the Most Holy Trinity. Christians canbe seen and it is our conduct in thebody that glorifies and exalts Our

Blessed Lord. The members of ourbody are tools in the Holy Spirit’s Hands to help build the Church. The various trials we encounter are simplya test of our faith and they produce inus endurance. Impatience is a mark of unbelief. Patient endurance is enriching. The only way to learn patience is to gothrough the suffering that God has

assigned to us. Satan is proud, critical, unbending, stubborn, a gossip, jealousand a braggart. Pride glorifies man androbs God of the Glory He deserves. Theessence of sin, is to be independent of God. Beware if you feel important!Remember in this battle against Satanthe only way to conquer is to surrender,

SURRENDER TO

GOD!

Humility is not thinking meanly of ourselves; humility is not thinking of ourselves at all! We must know ourenemy and put on the Armor of God:truth, humility, faith and absoluteconfidence in God. Satan is a destroyer,he is well organized and his first attackis against the home. Let us give himsome resistance!

Our vast physical resources and ourmasterly technical skills will avail usnothing unless we are a people strong inFaith which gives purpose to our action, and fosters discipline and courage. Thetrue strength of a Christian Nation is thepower of God which outweighs all force

of arms! The fortress of our CatholicFamilies has been gravely undermined.Lustful self-indulgence, divorce and birthprevention have broken the lives of our youths rendering them delinquents!

Here is our little Philomena whom youenquired about the other day. Sincebirth, she has not had any ailment. She keeps growing healthy and people

are asking me, “Mike, what are you giving your baby to eat, what creamand soap do you use on her, etc.?”It’s not like I have a lot of money to take care of her like some people dobut when she stands among otherchildren, she looks different. When it was time for her to walk, she walkedand now she has started singing and

talking. People can’t stop being amazed.Thank you for accompanying me on thisjourney; when I needed your prayersright from my wife’s pregnancy, you were there for me; you remember themother almost lost the baby but for theintercession of St. Philomena andMother Mary. Philomena is ourmiracle baby!

< Michael - NIGERIA >

When I had my 6th baby, I had a longhard labor and suffered with a uterineinfection. The doctor advised me to

have no more children and suggestedI have a ligation. I became pregnant  with my 7th child last year and myfamily was very much concerned formy wellbeing. My aunt let me wearher St. Philomena cord during my 8th month of pregnancy and I prayed tothis great Saint every day. She heard myprayers. I had a normal delivery and

named the baby, Mercedes Philomenain honor of God’s mercy and in thanks to St. Philomena. < Maria – USA >

Today, while still in bed, there was agreat pressure on my left eye, butsuddenly it felt like tangled wiresbehind the eye being released. It wasastonishing. There was also pressure

ringing in my ear, which was painful.I placed my Brown Scapular on my earand my eye and felt an anointing. Theloud noise ceased and the pressure vanished. Things felt different. I tried toget up and I got right up without help.I was able to walk without assistance! All praise and thanksgiving to Godand His Saints! < Lillian – USA >

Thank you for your prayers and theintercession of St. Philomena. Mydaughter passed the bar exams andis now a full pledged attorney! PraiseGod! < Avilina - PHILIPPINES >

I wrote some time back and asked forprayers for my son to find a job. ThankGod and St. Philomena who broughtforth this miracle. My son received word,he was to fly out to the cruise ship inPuerto Rico and begin his new jobright away. He carried with him therelic card of St. Philomena and ispraying to her every day.

Forgive my delay in writing as this wasdue to the wild floods which surroundedour hospital. Here is a photo of ourorphans who have taken up a Decadein the Living Rosary. Please send usmore Sacramentals and pray for the

< Clarisse Misse - BENIN >

These good people are from Mexico,in the State of Michoacán. Her brother lost his job and, after going back to askif there was any way possible to reclaim

the job, he was told “Definitely, NO!”He was very discouraged when they weretold about the virgin St. Philomena andhow powerful she is. He and his wifebegan a novena to her with completeconfidence and, at the end, he wentback to ask for his job back. Theygave it to him right there and then!

I had a bad inflammation in my legs where screws had been implanted. Mydiabetes was unstable and I suffered amild stroke. The doctors said my toesmust be amputated. I agreed to thesurgery as my fever was high and theinflammation in my feet spread to my whole body. I was in grave danger. Ourdear friend, Jeanne Marie, visited me andbrought St. Philomena’s healing oil and other devotionals in her honor. He gaveme his own cord and a beautiful pictureof this Saint. I underwent the surgeryand he visited me every day for the nextthree days, saying that, at the end of that time, St. Philomena would heal

me and that my leg would be saved.  When the doctor came the next day,he announced that the inflammation was completely gone. Today, my bodyis healed and my diabetes is undergood control. I am at home with my

wife and son, who promised to honorSt. Philomena for all of their lives.< George - BEIRUT, LEBANON >

For three years, I suffered terrible painsin my joints, underarms, arms andknees. During this time I went to threedoctors, had tests done, and was givensedatives and vitamins. Nothing stoppedor lessened the pain. It was as if 1000needles were driven into my body, tothe point where I could get no rest atnight. At first, I judged this devotion toSt. Philomena to be exaggerated piety, foolish, truly foolish! Today, I amashamed to admit this. One night whenmy pains were excruciating, I took thelittle vial of holy oil and put it all over

my body where the pains were so bad.Instantly, I experienced such relief thatI fell deeply asleep. The pains ceasedas if by magic. But, it was not magic! It was through the grace of God andthe intercession of St. Philomena. Istopped taking all my medicine.

< Javier - UNA VOCE CUBA > On 23rd May, a dear friend of mine wastaken to the ER unresponsive. She wasan elderly woman with no relatives inour State. Our priest went out to giveher Extreme Unction, and we prayedthe Rosary around her bedside. She  was also enrolled in the ScapularConfraternity on that same day. I am writing to ask you to send meanother holy oil. My husband uses itevery day for his leg problems and, although he has always been skepticalof miracles, finds his legs much better. He has been converted by St. Philomena. He was unable to sleep or walk withoutlots of pain. He prays to this dear Saintevery night and thanks her for helpinghim! I have been faithful to my Decade.Thank you for all you do in promoting, the Decades of the Rosary. Gratefully yours, < Clare - NY, USA > We visited Paul in Liberia and he toldus about St. Philomena. My wife and Ihad been married for six months andshe was having spiritual problems. We

made the 54 days Rosary Novena for theintercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We found that she was 3 monthspregnant. Her confinement time cameand labor was only thirty minutes. Ourbeautiful baby is named Philomena.

< Alfred - LIBERIA > We want to share the miracle obtainedthrough the Miraculous Medal. Our bloodbath is increasing daily. Last week, closeto 200 people were killed by suicidebombers. The miracle was that Zai, aMoslem girl who had accepted the Medal, kept it on her body hidden from every-

one. None of her relatives knew she hadit. Her family was killed in the bombing, she alone lived! She has promised to wear the Miraculous Medal all her lifeand is asking me for more. Please prayfor her! < Paul - SOMALIA >

After working in the school, my husbandand I took the bus home. There was aterrible accident. My hand and arm isbroken and multiple injuries on mybody. Still, it is a great miracle that Iam not dead! I say, “Thank you, Saint Philomena and the holy Virgin Mary!”Here are the lists of 120 new members

for the Living Rosary. We have twomiracles to share: Yeldie was marriedfor 15 years and had no children, butafter she was anointed with the holyoil of St. Philomena, she was blessed with twins. Another lady who was ten years married without children, put onthe Miraculous Medal and anointedherself with the holy oil. She is now

expecting a child.< Paula - MAURITIUS >

I am a patient with hyperthyroidism.I began to use a drop of the holy oil of St. Philomena on my tongue. When I  went for my review at the UniversityHospital, I was told that my thyroidgland was now almost normal!

< Monica - ZAMBIA >

St. Philomena answered our prayersand the application of her oil on myhusband’s large toe prevented the need to amputate it! The black skin peeledoff and there was new healthy pinkskin underneath it. The best news of all is that he has decided to join the

Living Rosary! Thanks for all yourprayers. < Peggy – MA, USA > S aint P hilomena,I nvincible C hampion

In January 2005, my daughter was inher third month of pregnancy for herfirst child, when she was involved in a4-vehicle accident on a busy street. Two

vehicles hit her from behind and she was so blessed to sustain only moderateinjuries. The vehicle she was driving was the smallest one involved. The othertwo were totaled. To our amazement, her vehicle sustained minimal damageand the left rear corner of the car tookthe brunt of the impact and on thatside, was the bumper sticker, “Ask Saint

Philomena - To Philomena nothingis refused!” Here is Myra with AnnaRose who is now 5 years old!

material things. So many souls are onthe road to Hell. I do what I can but it isnot enough.
