PROFILES PATTERNS DIMENSIONSWIDTH LENGTH THICKNESSStore in a clean and dry place prior to finishing

and installation.

Finish decking on all four sides and both ends with penetrating oil based sealer prior to in-stallation. Finishes with fungicides, mildew-cides and UV inhibitors will keep your deck looking its best longer.

To allow for modest expansion of the boards when wet, we strongly recommend leaving a 1/4” space between each piece when laid side by side. Lengthwise shrinking is minimal, so butt ends neatly and tightly.

Our recommended joist spacing spans are 16” for 4/4 material and up to 24” for 5/4 material.

We recommend the use of high quality non-corrosive screws or nails to fasten your deck boards to the joist substructure. Galvanized nails and stainless steel screws seem to work best. We do not recommend the use of under deck fastening systems or deck clip fastening systems.

Pre-drill pilot holes 3/4” from the ends of the boards to minimize splitting and ensure the fastener penetrates at least 1-1/2” into the joist preferably at a slight angle for best results. On 6” material we recommend three fasteners per joist while 4” needs only two.

Proper ventilation is essential to allow your decking boards to breathe. Please ensure your deck is raised off the ground 18” or more to achieve year round air flow.

To Stain or Not to StainIpé can be left in the raw and over time will weather to a silver/gray color. On the other hand, to help preserve the beauty and color of Ipé, a UV resistant stain or penetrating oil finish can be applied. Before applying any type of coating, brush the surface to remove any dust or dirt.

Fasteners and Fastening SystemsStainless steel screws or stainless steel pneumatic nails are recom-mended. Because of the high density of Ipé, pre-drilling will be re-quired before installing the screws. Some fastening systems now offer the benefit of hidden screws thus giving your project a nice finished look. There are a number of hardware and fastening system suppliers that can recommend the best product for your requirements.

SpacingWhen installing the decking boards, a 1/16” spacing between boards is generally recommended. This will allow for proper air circulation between boards but also minimizes gap width after the natural seasoning of the lumber takes place.

ToolsIpé can be worked with conventional carbide tipped saw blades and drill bits. The tool life of high-speed steel will be greatly short-ened when cutting or drilling Ipé.

About the SpeciesThe wood is procured from Brazil and is machined there as well. It is one of the hardest and most dense species known. With a weight of approximately 6 lbs per board foot (net), it offers superior durability and rot/decay resistance that even pressure treated products cannot surpass. Naturally medium dark brown in color, Ipé has a smooth texture that is less likely to splinter and peel up like some other woods, thus reducing splinters and unsightly raised grain seen commonly on weath-ered decks after a few years.
