Grade Level News

KINDERGARTEN In Fundations we have learned all of the lower-case letters and sounds. This is an exciting time in kindergarten, what an accomplishment! We will now breeze through the capital letters and move into sounding out CVC words and writing them. We will also work on identifying the ending sounds and vowels in words. Remember to read to your child and practice sight words daily. What a difference it makes in your child’s literacy devel-opment. The Kindergartners will be singing several holi-day songs for all parents and guests on Friday, December 16th. You can meet us in the cafeteria at 2:00pm. Afterwards, we will have a small re-ception in our classrooms. We look forward to seeing everyone, as this is our only performance till the end of the year. Don’t forget your camer-as! ‘Tis the season for sick kindergartners. Please be teaching your child how to cough into their el-bow, blow their nose, and the importance of washing their hands with soap. With the chilly weather upon us please write your child’s name on the inside of their jackets and scarves. If your child ever looses their jacket or lunch box you are welcomed to check Lost and Found before or af-ter school; it’s located in the cafeteria hallway by the band room. On behalf of the Kindergarten teachers, we would like to wish all of our families a joyous Holiday Season. FIRST GRADE Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s already December. This month will zoom by. In Math we will be working on more complex problems, so automa-ticity in addition and subtraction facts is a must. Make sure your child continues to logon to and use Xtra Math to build up their speed. In Reading we are working on fluency and expression. Be sure to practice sight words and read nightly to

increase fluency and comprehension. In Social Studies we will be learning all about different cel-ebrations around the world. On Tuesday, December 20th we will have our winter craft rotation. Students will switch class-rooms and work on a fun holiday craft with each first grade teacher. On Wednesday, December 21st we will be watching Polar Express and wear-ing our pajamas. Please be on the lookout for supply sign ups from your child’s teacher. The first grade team wishes you a wonderful Hol-iday Season. See you next year! SECOND GRADE The holidays are upon us. We continue to be amazed at how fast this year is going. In math we are continuing to work on word prob-lems, place value, and comparing numbers. Please help your child practice math facts at home. We continue to work on comprehension and fluency in Reading. Please continue to en-courage your child to read A.R. books at home. During the Winter Break encourage your child to read daily. Homework will not be sent home over break, but it would be a good time to review spelling words that you know your child has struggled with. We are looking forward to the New Year, and hope you enjoy the Holiday Season! Thank you for your continued support. THIRD GRADE We can’t believe we are almost halfway through the school year. The kids have all been working really hard and we are enthusiastically helping our students reach their A.R. goals. Please continue to encourage your child to read chapter books at home for at least 20 minutes each night. Students should be taking library books home and bringing them back to school each day. We have been working on text dependent questions and asking the students to justify their answers by finding the evidence within the passage. We ask that you en-courage this skill at home while working on their homework packet.

In Math, we are working on multiplication and division in one step and two-step word problems and will soon be moving on to ment. The students should continue to practice their math facts as mastering these skills now, will ensure a more positive experience in years to come. We have purchased Science Studies Weekly newspapers to help supplement our science cur-riculum. These are amazing newspapers which you will soon see coming home with your child if you haven’t already. Look over these articles with your child as they initiate great conversa-tions. Since we are almost halfway through the school year, we are running through our school supplies quickly. We are in need of sharpened pencils and wide ruled line paper. Any donations in this area would be greatly appreciated. The third grade team would like to wish each of you a wonderful and relaxing Holiday Season and the best New Year ever!!! FOURTH GRADE It is difficult to believe that almost half of the school year has passed! Please ask your students about their AR goals and the progress they are making towards meeting those goals. Fourth graders have also been working on solving double digit multiplication and division using various strategies. Have them show you new and exciting ways of multiplying and dividing. Practice those math facts! We will be focusing on the animal studies unit in science. Your scientist will be-come an expert on adaptations, camouflage, mim-icry and symbiotic relationships. Enjoy your Winter Break! FIFTH GRADE The fifth grade team thanks the Finley Farms community for all the support the students in our classes receive on a daily basis. The curriculum for the future months for Social Studies will in-clude studying Colonial America, the Revolution-ary War, and the U.S. Constitution.

Currently fifth grade is exploring one of the all time favorite Science units, Motion and Design. In this unit students examine the physical laws associated with wheeled vehicles. Students study Newton’s First Law, which is: Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is ap-plied to it. In math, we have been working on multiplication and division of fractions. In December and Janu-ary we will develop greater skills relating to mul-tiplication and division of multidigit numbers. Our Math curriculum will continue to focus on solving real world problems. The fifth grade teachers wish everyone a happy Holiday Season. SIXTH GRADE The Sixth Grade team is now focusing on ancient civi-lizations and will be ready to begin the students' much favored unit on Ancient Egypt beginning in Janu-ary. Working to improve their organization in Lan-guage, students have learned to effectively use transi-tions, write better introductions, and finish off their writing pieces in style. During Math, students have practiced how to perform all the basic operations with decimals and fractions, and are now learning about integers and the coordinate plane. Finally, during Lit-erature, students are sharing an important and timely piece of classical literature in A Christmas Carol. As the end of the year approaches, please remember that you may make donations to Finley Farms and/or pay for your child's upcoming field trips and receive a tax credit from the state of Arizona. The current bal-ance due after our trip to the Mesa Grande site is $157.00. To get your tax credit receipt, just send your check to the front office, along with the tax credit form, no later than December 16th. Of course, you may still apply for tax credit in 2017 as well. Tax credit forms are located in the office. We wish you all a wonderful Winter Break and ask you to encourage your child to read daily during this time. The most important and lasting gift we can give our children is their education. Nothing else will serve them better. Happy Holidays.

New Year’s Resolutions.....

To help your students have a successful second half of the school year. 10 - Make sure your child gets a good night sleep (8+ hours). 9 - Wake them early enough to shower or clean up, eat breakfast, and arrive at school no later than 8:30 a.m. (Tardy bell rings at 8:38 a.m.) 8 - Send your child to school appropriately dressed. Jackets or sweaters during the Winter months and pants, shorts, skirts, shirts that meet the school dress code in the warm to hotter months. No beach or pool flip flops. 7 - Make sure your child has either a healthy lunch from home or lunch money for school. If they make their own lunch, check what they are bringing. 6 - Know your child’s schedule and what days they have their Special classes: P.E., Art, Li-brary, Music, and Computers. Then make sure they have what is needed to participate......... ie: P.E. shoes, musical instrument, Library book, etc. 5 - Check your child’s backpack and/or agenda daily for homework or school correspondence. 4 - Communicate closely with your child’s teach-er. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. 3 - Have a daily set homework or study time for your child and verify that they are using it. 2 - Show a genuine interest in your child’s educa-tion and let them know how important a good ed-ucation is. Relate it to your educational experi-ences, your job or their career ambitions. 1 - Be an active partner in your child’s education with their teacher, the school staff and admin-istration.

Health Office News The Holidays are upon us and we all have busy schedules and travel plans! Please keep in mind that this time of year we tend to see an upswing in lice cases. Parents may want to consider weekly head checks. If you have any questions or con-cerns, please feel free to contact the health office for lice information resources. Also, this time of the year brings different kinds of illnesses. Stu-dents are being told to wash their hands well and teachers are doing a great job wiping down their classrooms. Many of our teachers would greatly appreciate some donations of disinfectant wipes. They have been going through them like wild fire. If you are able to help it is appreciated. For in-formation on proper hand washing please visit http;/www.cdc.gov/feathures/handwashing/. Just a reminder regarding the school’s sick and medication policy: If your child has a fever of 100 degrees or higher, they are not to return to school until their tem-perature returns to normal without the aid of fever reducing medications, like Tylenol or Motrin. If your child is vomiting or has diarrhea, they are to stay home for 24 hours after the last time they were sick. For instance if they vomit at 12:30 p.m., they are not to return to school the next day even if they feel better. If your child is sick with a severe cold, persis-tent,”heavy” wet cough, excessive runny nose – please allow them to stay home to rest until their symptoms lessen. If they are experiencing mild symptoms, they can attend school. In order to aid your child at school if they have a cold please send them with the following: a water bottle, small box of tissues, and a small container of hand sanitizer. All medications must be brought into the Health Office by an adult. Please do not send any type of medication, including OTC meds like creams and ointments with your children. The appropriate paperwork will need to be completed.

YOU can Help..... ....to cut down on a possible source of flu virus con-tamination by making a donation of disinfectant wipes - the kind you now see at the entrance of grocery stores for cart wipe downs. Our goal is to have each student wipe down the keyboards before they use the computers in the lab. We know that if we are vigilant about cleaning surfaces where students share equip-ment it will help stop the spread of viruses. I hope you will be able to help us with this project. Thank you.

It’s NOT Too Late...

GPS TAX CREDIT FOR KIDS You still have time to give your tax credit dona-tion for the tax year 2016, or after December 31st for 2017. In 1997 the State Legislature passed a bill that allows an individual to deduct as a tax credit, fees paid to schools for school-sponsored extracurricular activities. Specifically, (1) Allows $400 State tax credit for any joint household and $200 for an individual paying Arizona State In-come Tax; (2) This is a credit against any State income tax liability - NOT a deduction from in-come; (3) The funds must be used towards school-sponsored extracurricular activities; and (4) Schools/District can accept unlimited funds, although the credit is only $400.00 per tax return. Some Commonly Asked Questions: Do I take this as a deduction or a credit on my Arizona State Income Tax Return? As a credit. Using Form 322, you take the amount as a credit to get full dollar for dollar value against your in-come tax liability. Do I have to donate $400.00? No, you may do-nate any amount up to $400.00, or donate in in-stallments up to $400.00. What if I don’t owe any taxes when I file my 1040 form? If you paid in at least $400.00 in Ar-izona income tax for the calendar year, then you get a refund for the amount of the credit. What does it cost me? Nothing. It is a decision regarding the income taxes you pay and who you want to receive the $400.00, the schools or De-partment of Revenue. These are just some of the groups/projects that have benefited from tax credit donations: ALP, AR Reading, Band, Choir, Bus Expenses for Ex-tracurricular Field Trips, Educational Assem-blies, Grade Level Field Trips, Peer Mediators,

Oceanography, Science Camp and Student Coun-cil. Please turn in your check to the school office and your 2016 Tax Credit Donation form by Decem-ber 18th, or the District Office by Friday, Decem-ber 30th. 2016. NOTE: Checks may be post dated through De-cember 30th . To take advantage of the Arizona tax credit, please complete the 2016 tax credit form and make your check payable to Finley Farms Elementary School or GPS.

ACADEMIC NIGHT STANDARDS

Academic Night is a district program that acknowledges and honors students in grades 4-12 who have achieved and maintained high academic standing during the current school year. To be eligible, the following guidelines must be met: 1. A student must have received no more than one “B” in all Core subject areas within the first three grading periods. All other grades must be “A’s”. Core subjects include: Reading, Lan-guage, Math, Science/Health, and Social Studies; 2. ALP students shall meet the same crite-ria as stated above, although the ALP grades are weighted so that a “B” equals an “A” for Aca-demic Night; 3. Students must have earned a grade of “3” or “2” in all self-management skills; 4. Students must be working at or above grade level in all subject areas.

Page 8: DECEMBER/JANUARY - SharpSchoolgilbertfinley.ss11.sharpschool.com/UserFiles/Servers... · DECEMBER/JANUARY NEWSLETTER FINLEY FARMS ELEMENTARY 375 S. Columbus Dr. Gilbert, AZ 85296

To participate in Academic Night, students enrol-ling in Gilbert Public Schools after school begins must enter from an accredited school, with grades that would qualify them for Academic Night the first grading period. Students entering after the second grading period will be considered for Ac-ademic Night the following year.

Responsibility Center Finley Farms Elementary utilizes an on campus Responsibility Center to assist students in pro-cessing obstacles to his/her success in the school setting. The program assists students to think and act responsibly while at school by giving them a choice to: Change their inappropriate behavior and remain in the class setting or be removed from class until they have worked through their issue to become successful. By continuing dis-ruptive behaviors, a student has made the choice to leave the classroom. In the RC the student completes (with the supervision of a trained adult) a Student Success Plan (SSP) outlining positive ways they will change their behavior. The SSP is sent home for a parental signature and due back to the RC the following day. Once a student has vis-ited the RC three times, the Principal may request a meeting with that student and their parent. Up-on their fourth trip to the RC a meeting may be set up with the student, their teacher, the Principal, RC staff and the student’s parents.

The Responsibility Center is not a place of punishment, rather it is a place for children to gain knowledge and learn techniques that will help them change their behaviors in a positive di-rection.

The goals of the RC are to offer one-on-

one assistance and interaction with a trained and supportive staff member and offer academic, emotional, and behavioral intervention to enhance the student’s attitude and overall presentation at school. The RC offers the teacher a structured, supervised, and safe environment to immediately send students that are disruptive and/or not suc-

cessful in the regular school setting, i.e. class-room, playground, etc. Ultimately, it is our goal that the RC will help with the academic perfor-mance of all students. When a child is disrupting a class, neither that child nor their classmates have the optimum opportunity to learn.

REMINDER

Please keep saving your School Cents re-ceipts. School Cents Program ends on April 30th, 2017. Continue to turn all re-ceipts in to the F.F.E. Office, take them to the Customer Service Office or now you can submit them online at shopand-log.com/santan. Thank you!

FFE Service Club

The Finley Farms Service Club is sponsoring a gently used shoe drive for disadvantaged children. The shoes will be distributed to children who are being served by Department of Child Safety. We need any new or gently used shores for children of all ages. Please drop off each pair of shoes se-cured in a grocery bag that is tied off and then place the back in a marked box near the FFE front office. Donations will be accepted through Janu-ary. We could also use new packages of pant-ies/underwear and gently used shorts (preschool to first grade age) for our health office to make available for our younger students who may need a change of clothes.
