November was a very busy month for Key Club with Fall Rally South, an important DCM,

and a ton of Thanksgiving-related community service. December’s newsletter is packed full

of information with a recap of the DCM, recognition of nominated members and clubs, a

first-hand account of Key Leader by your very own Lieutenant Governor, updated “Killer

Points” and a determined prize, and upcoming events in December.

December, however, is going to be even busier with all of the Christmas-related community

service! I encourage everybody to keep up the hard work and service to the community this

month. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting things we don’t need around the winter holi-

days, but remember all the people who aren’t as fortunate as us. A quote from a Rolling

Stones song comes to my mind around this time of year, “You can't always get what you

want, but if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need.” Let’s focus all of the

crazy spirit from Fall Rally to helping the people who hardly have “what they need.” After

all, it’d be hard to be happy without necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter, and ‘tis

the season to be jolly! Happy Holidays, and enjoy your winter vacation!

MOST SERVICE HOURS PER MEMBER: Saint Bonaventure High School

MOST FUNDS RAISED PER MEMBER: Buena High School

CLUB OF THE MONTH: Ventura High School Twice in a row, this school's

club has been chosen. They have shown that in order to effectively give a

helping hand, they must provide many opportunities for their members to

perform service. This not only allows some members to reach their member-

ship requirement of 50 hours of service as soon as possible, it also allows

members to attend events that are convenient for their schedule. With four

events in the month of October, it basically meant one for each week of

the month as an overall look to it. Planning so many events is not easy ei-

ther. So being able to have that many shows that the board works hard on

keeping projects coming for their club. Ventura has definitely proven that it

is able to keep the waves of the ocean moving.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: Ian Cootz from Santa Paula High School

From Santa Paula High School, Ian is currently a sophomore and has been

actively involved in Key Club since his freshman year, attending several of

the organized events. Nevertheless, he is also very well involved in school

academically and with helping the community outside of school. During his

spare time, he volunteers at a soup kitchen and hikes while picking up trash

along the way. As quoted by his president, "Key Club is not just for commu-

nity service. It's an honor to be in Key Club because to make a better com-

munity, we need to step over our comfort zones, take down our pride, and

help others." Ian has truly shown that he has gone above and beyond the

member expectations.

What is Key Leader?

Key Leader is a weekend sponsored by Kiwanis International, Key Club International, and the U.S. Army. It is a

weekend for young students of the grade levels 8-12 to gain leadership skills through different workshops and

activities. The workshops mainly focus on the five principles of Key Leader: Integrity, Respect, Growth, Commu-

nity, and Excellence. The activities the attendees participate in focus on communication, team work, and under-

standing. This year, 70 people attended Key Leader at Camp Cedar Glen in Julian, California from October 21-

23.

There, we were all able to experience effective learning moments with our amazing lead facilitator (Carol Clyde),

our volunteer adult facilitators, our student facilitators, and each other.

My experience (Linda Taing):

This was an event I was looking forward to for months. There is so much to say about it but to shorten it up, it

really taught me so much. How to communicate, lead a group, work as a team, take risks, choose my values care-

fully, actively listen, and much more. Aside from that, I met many new friends that as of now are building into

great friendships. Together, we were able to discover our strengths, weaknesses, and work as a team to figure out

how to utilize them. With my chicken crew, I learned the importance of communication as we succeeded in

parts of our low ropes course and also encountered some difficulties. Even the food was a magical experience

because they stuffed you until you were satisfied. With every single minute I spent at this camp, I knew that the

ones who put it together really wanted us to leave as key leaders with new skills and many stories to share of our

adventure. I could not have picked a better group of people to spend this event with!
