Embracing the Heart of the Season

Centennial’s Adult Choir will present under the direction of David Penn the Christmas Cantata “Holding On To Christmas” on Sun-day morning, December 18th during the regular 10:45 am service.

Shared memories and more are at the center of this new Christmas musical Holding on to Christmas, from beloved arranger Marty Parks. This delightfully charming “comfort-the-soul” musical is a warm invitation to “come sit by the fireside, wrap up in your favorite Christmas blanket, and reminisce about Christmas” as, together, we celebrate fam-ily and friends and most importantly, the Savior who was born so long ago on that first Christmas night in Bethlehem.

The month of November has brought some change for our Children’s Ministry and a night of travel for our Student Ministry. First let’s talk Student Ministry. This month we had a progres-sive dinner where Ann Moore joined me and some of our students to travel from house to house having a Thanksgiving meal. We started our night leaving the church on the van headed to Ra-chel and Jimmy Cox’s house where we began with salad and appetizers. Next we headed to Sta-cey Moore’s house for the main portion of the meal. We had turkey, noodles, potatoes and so much more. After eating and enjoying quite a time of fellowship through good conversation and joking we packed up to head out for dessert. Our final stop for the evening was at Sallee Lauer’s house. When we arrived we found a fire waiting for us and we proceeded to cook s’mores. It goes without saying I owe a great deal of thanks to our hosts. Without your hospitality the night would not have been able to happen. I also want to thank Ann for riding along with us in the van. Finally thank you to those who offered to open their houses up to us who we could not use for this particular event. It is so appropriate that in the month where we have a day dedicated to expressing our thankfulness as a nation that I get to express so much thankfulness to and for our congregation for exercising their spiritual gifts to bless myself and our students.

I mentioned this month has also brought some change for our Children’s Ministry. As of No-vember 30, I know it barely made it in, we have stopped using Lifeway's Bible Studies for Life Worship for our Wednesday evening program. We have now moved to using Kid’s Own Wor-ship (KOW) by Group. This program has introduced some new elements into our time together on Wednesday nights. Where previously the evening was primarily modeled in such a way that we had dinner then broke into two small groups for worship through song, games, and Bible story time KOW will offer a new model of large group, small group, large group. In this format we will still begin with eating dinner followed by the evening beginning with a time of worship with music for large group and some kind of large group game. Afterward our children will break into familiar small groups to dive deeper and learn from the Bible with stories and activi-ties (for the pre—school children this will include Theo the Faithretriever Puppet). Finally, once this time has concluded we will come back together as a large group and close with more songs before praying to dismiss. It is my hope that we will help our children to experience God in a new way through this. In closing I must now again express my thanks to our Wednesday night leaders. Thank you for all you do. It would literally be impossible for me to do this alone. Thank you for showing up week after week and investing in the lives of Children. We might not get to see the fruit of our labor for years to come, perhaps never at all, but we are building a foundation for their lives which will encourage them to make wise decisions as the you grow and (continued on page 8)

Page 8: December “A FAMILY OF FAITH 2016 STANDING TO ......“Everybody needs Jesus.” Jesus did not just come to the earth for us to have a nice Christmas where we can exchange presents,

to honor God with their lives. For the children who will in the com-

ing years become part of our Student Ministry we also build a foun-

dation for what happens there and for that I cannot say thank you

enough..

In closing I am very excited for everything that is happening for our

Children's Student Ministries. There will continue to be effort put

into raising the children and teens to be people of great faith. We

will continue to strive to experience healthy growth within both of

these ministries and I look forward to how you will be involved in

that. Eric Fleming

IN THE STABLE WHERE CHRIST WAS BORN…

SMELL the stable. Smell the fresh cow dung. Smell the dampness of the cave, the

water dripping along the side. Smell the donkeys and the cows. Smell the rancid

straw, gleaming with animal saliva.

SEE the cobwebs, the hen with her little brood of chicks over in the corner, the crude and simple atmosphere of heaven’s maternity ward.

TOUCH the warm backs of the animals as they chew their food in the stalls. Feel

the manger, cushioned with new, clean straw.

LISTEN to the wind whistling through the gate. Listen again and

you will hear the hundreds who still are up late at night, meandering

through the streets of Bethlehem.

NOTICE the shaft of light that penetrates the gate as if it were fo-

cused from heaven upon this particular place. Look over in the far corner and you

will see them. You will hear them. And you can touch them. The young mother

with her newborn child. Her sturdy husband-to-be. The wondering shepherds..

How goes the stable of your life? Where is Christ being born in the shadows of your

inner self? While the noises of life all around you continue, have you noticed what’s

happening inside your stable? Have you invited the wise to come and open their

treasures to you? Have you allowed the lonely to come and celebrate the new things

that are being born in your life? Are you listening to your dreams during the night?

HOW VERY EXCITING!!

Centennial Baptist is participating in

the Angel Tree Ministry and providing

gifts for children of inmates who can’t

get anything for them. We already

know names, ages, wish lists, etc.

Please take an Angel off of our Angel

Tree next time you are at church and put a smile on the face of a child who

can’t have mom or dad at home with them at Christmas time. There will

be an insert about Angel Tree in Sunday the 4th bulletin.

This is where opportunity meets resources.

PLEASE HELP!!
