    Hurrayfor Don!

    Finally, the luck of the

    draw prevails. Don Potter

has been putting in for aneither-sex elk permit since

    1955 thats a span of

    60 years and this year

    he nally drew a permit.

    Hell bent on lling that

tag, he got the job done in

    the middle of the general

    hunting season, bagging

6x6 bull off the Pines Road

    near the Eide spread.

    A Glasgow High School

Graduate of 1956, hewould like to thank a lot of

help from a lot of people in

    babysitting this Old Fart.

Boy am I lucky, he said,

All of you sure made me

    happy. He also added that

this was the rst time in

his life he drank a can of

beer and had two shots of

    Schnapps before 9:30 in

    the morning!

America is a country foundedon guns. Its in our DNA. Its

very strange but I feel bettehaving a gun. I really do. dont feel safe, I dont fee

the house is completelysafe, if I dont have one

    hidden somewhere. Thats

    my thinking, right or wrong.

Right now, it seems every elk hunter in Montana andbeyond who did not get his, or her, elk in the general seasonthat ended Nov. 29 has ocused on our hunting districtsbetween Great Falls and White Sulphur Springs that aretaking part in the new elk shoulder season.

Our phone lines have been jammed with hunters lookingor inormation, said Gary Bertellotti, Fish, Wildlie and ParksRegion 4 supervisor. At times all our lines are tied up. A pilot program, the shoulder season or antlerless elkruns Nov. 30 through Feb. 15 in hunting districts 445, 446,452 and 449. A similar antlerless elk season in HD 410 is Jan.1 to Feb. 15. For all these districts, hunting is allowed only on privatelands, ederal Bureau o Land Management lands and stateo Montana school trust lands. No elk shoulder seasonswill occur on national orest lands, the Charles M. RussellNational Wildlie Reuge or any FWP wildlie managementareas. For a complete list o the rules and regulations visit theFWP website: http://wp.mt.gov/ FWP has also hired hunt coordinators to help huntersand landowners. Te hunt coordinators gather inormation romlandowners on an ongoing basis regarding their need, or not,or hunters and distribution o elk in their area, Bertellottisaid. Tey will provide inormation to hunters whenpossible to try to connect hunters with access and elk. Because o the high interest in the season, phone lineshave been overwhelmed at times leading some hunters to

express rustration. People should reer to our website first or inormation,Bertellotti said. Also remember that this is a two and hal monthopportunity. Tings will slow down as ar as calls to coordinatorsand the opportunity to get inormation rom them. Prospective hunters should be aware that the hunts maynot be easy, especially or those who are not amiliar with thearea, Bertellotti said. Te majority o access and retrieval willbe walk in only. People should not have unrealistic expectations,Bertellotti said. Tis is not a game damage hunt. At timesthis will be an arduous hunt.
