December Birthdays

In astrology, those born between December 1–21 are centaur archers of Sagittarius. Archers are curious, energetic, and enjoy change, the restless travelers of the zodiac. They are funny and enthusiastic, cherishing freedom as their greatest treasure. Those born between December 22–31 are the horned goats of Capricorn. As goats climb to great heights, Capricorns strive to get to the top, using discipline and common sense to find fame, prestige, and money.

Message from the Executive Director

With the holiday season approaching,

residents and families have asked if they

may give gifts/food to staff as a token of their

appreciation for the staff’s efforts to care for

them/their loved ones. In keeping with the

peopleCare Communities Inc. policy “Gifts,

Accepting” gifts may be given to the Home

area for sharing. Please note that no cash

gifts or gifts to one staff member in particular

should be given/accepted at any time.

Management and

staff may accept

customary business

hospitality such as a

gift basket, baked

goods and

chocolates etc. The

gifts can be received

by the Home area

and the contents in the baskets can be taken

by staff to eat on their break in the Staff

Lounge.

It is preferred that gift baskets have

items/baked goods, chocolates that are

individually wrapped, so that staff can take a

serving/portion of the food with them to eat

on their break/lunch.

Gift baskets can remain in the Home area to

be divided and taken to the Staff Lounge or

outside to be consumed.

The Nurses Stations or resident Home areas are not an appropriate place for consuming foods or drinks. To support staff hydration, drinks with secure lids (water bottles, Tim’s coffee) can be stored in the labelled cupboard that is in each resident home area dining room and only in that labelled cupboard. The drinks should not be on medication, nutrition or treatment carts, in the servery, or kitchen on the Home area. If you have any questions about gift giving, please contact Lynda Monik, Executive Director.

If you have any questions about gift giving, please contact Lynda Monik, Executive Director.

News and Notes With the Holiday Season fast approaching just a reminder when taking your loved ones out of the home… When residents are leaving the Home, the resident/family/friends taking the resident on a Leave of Absence will be asked and/or should offer information about the time of the LOA, where the resident will be taken for the LOA and have a working telephone number to reach the resident/family/friends while the resident is on an LOA. If the resident requires medications to be administered by the resident/family/friends a form will need to be completed and signed by the resident/family/friend who will be administering the medication(s). The medications will be reviewed with the resident/family/friend prior to leaving the Home to ensure the resident will receive the "right" medications. If you have any questions about taking your loved one on a LOA, please contact Gloria Johnson for all 3rd Floor Residents (ext 307) Mazhar Muhammed for all 2nd Floor Residents (ext207)

Oakcrossing Giving Tree Share joy and happiness this holiday season by participating in

Oakcrossing Giving Tree!

The Giving Tree is a way of making the holidays brighter for some

residents at the Home.

Please help us make a resident’s holiday special!

Individuals who would like to give an anonymous gift to a resident,

who does not have family/loved ones are asked to take a tag off of

the tree by Main Reception and purchase the gift(s) identified on

the tag. Each tag includes the resident’s gender, size, and their wish

or the staff’s suggestion for a holiday gift(s) for the resident.

Altogether the total dollar amount spent on the gift(s) should not

exceed $40 for each resident.

Please deliver the unwrapped gifts (with the original tag included)

to Cassy Borth, Director of Programs by December 20th, 2019. All

gifts will be wrapped and delivered to the resident in time for

Christmas morning.

Thank you for making this holiday season a little bit brighter!

Merry Christmas in Languages Spoken by Our Residents and StaffARABIC - I'd Miilad Said Oua Sana Saida CROATIAN - Sretan Bozic! Is de rigueur in Croatia, but if you're heading to Eastern Europe, there are as many variants as there are nations. DUTCH - Zalig Kerstfeest! is the greeting you'll hear in Dutch-speaking countries. In Belgium, Zalig Kerstfeest would be the right thing to say to anybody. In the Netherlands, you have options. You can say "Prettige Kerstdagen," "Vrolijk Kerstfeest en een Gelukkig Nieuwjaar," (tossing in a "Happy New Year" for good measure) or, of course, "Zalig Kerstfeest!" ENGLISH - Merry Christmas! This is the common phrase in a number of countries around the world, including the United States and Canada. It's also what they say on Christmas Island, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Fiji, and if you happen to be there this time of year, be sure to say Merry Christmas in Antarctica! In England - Happy Christmas. FINNISH - Hauskaa Joulua FRENCH - Joyeux Noël! For Francophiles, Joyeux Noël is the greeting of the season, and you will hear it or say it in a number of places around the world - France, of course, and also in Canada. You'll also hear it quite a lot in African nations during your visits to Burkina Faso, Burundi, and Cameroon, or when hanging out in Chad, The Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Madagascar, or Togo.

GERMAN - Fröhliche Weihnachten! will bring a smile to the face of Germans, and if you happen to be in Liechtenstein it will be warmly received there as well. In Switzerland, there's a slight variation; there, they say "Fröhlichi Wiehnacht!" And if you are in Austria, you have less of a mouthful to say: it's simply "Frohe Weihnachten." LOW GERMAN - Moie Wiehnacht! GREEK - Kala Christougenna HEBREW – In Hebrew, the translation isn't always in the same order as it is in English. Passover is 'Pesach Sameach’. Hanukkah is 'Chanukah Sameach'. Yom Kippur is 'Yom Kippur Sameach'. 'happy holiday' is 'Chag Sameach'. HUNGARIAN - Boldog Karácsonyt ITALIAN - Buon Natale! is Italian for Merry Christmas, but be sure to say it with gusto! LEBANESE - Milad Majeed POLISH - Wesolych Swiat PORTUGUESE - Feliz Natal. ROMANIAN - Craciun Fericit, Sarbatori Fericite SERBIAN - Hristos se rodi (Христос се роди) SLOVAKIAN - Vesele Vianoce

SIGN LANGUAGE Warning – if you try this sign language please be careful of your finger positions.

SPANISH - Feliz Navidad! This is also how you'll want to wish them a Merry Christmas from the bottom of your heart in virtually every Spanish-speaking country (though not necessarily with musical accompaniment) including Spain and Gibraltar, Mexico and Central America, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama and South America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. UKRAINIAN - Veseloho Vam Rizdva
