The winter season is upon us, and at the Museum of Science that means the trains have pulled into Science Park once again with visual delights, hands-on fun, and perhaps a surprise or two. Leave your luggage behind, but bring your

sense of curiosity for two temporary exhibits and three films—all train-themed—that will leave you smiling. Take a trip to the Museum to see it all, for a limited time only!

Model This

Your first stop is All Aboard! Trains at Science Park, the whimsical

model train exhibit that debuted last year (on exhibit now through

January 7). It’s in a new location this year—next to Science in the Park

(Blue Wing, Level 2). Here, you’ll visit classic miniature landscapes

featuring model trains, snow-covered peaks, and intricately detailed

décor with familiar Boston landmarks, buildings, and even people!

Mobilize model trains and explore the scenic environment by pushing

buttons in a separate display where you can also activate lights and

other elements. Our youngest visitors can move wooden trains

Page 2: DECEMBER 2019 – JANUARY 2020 Sparks! · Computer Science Education Weekend December 14 and 15 Computers, from the large one sitting on your desk to the phone in your palm, are so

by hand around curves and over bridges on tracks they lay

themselves. And members of the HUB Division group

(model railroaders and general train enthusiasts) are here

again on select days to answer questions while they also

continue to create scenic elements and ensure that the rails

are just right for a smooth ride into the new year.

Take Two

Another train-themed experience is right around the corner,

but it’s a whole different trip aimed at visitors ages 2 – 7.

Thomas & FriendsTM: Explore the Rails, on exhibit through

January 12, includes characters and locations from the hit

television show with an interactive STEM-learning twist.

Young learners can solve problems ranging from simple

to complex, then climb into Thomas’s cab to see what

happens inside an engine. You can also manipulate

movable parts with brake, whistle, and steam sounds and

put on a conductor’s uniform just like the professionals

wear! There’s a memorabilia section that includes model

engines and more from the original live action series.

Showtime

Not one, not two, but three train-themed films will complete

your railway journey. (Separate timed tickets required for

these shows.)

Visit the 4-D Theater for our annual showing of THE

POLAR EXPRESSTM 4-D Experience. Enjoy a special version

of the cherished film—the most memorable scenes are

enhanced with thrilling special

effects for a truly unforgettable

and immersive experience for

the whole family. Also playing

is Thomas & FriendsTM 4-D:

Bubbling Boilers! Join Thomas

& Friends in this 4-D adventure

as they encounter big surprises

while racing to an exciting

celebration on Sodor.

Take a seat under the five-story

dome in the iconic Mugar

Omni Theater to get on board

the Rocky Mountain Express. Speed through the Canadian

Rockies on a thrilling train journey back to the age of steam.

Computer Science Education Weekend December 14 and 15

Computers, from the large one sitting on your desk to the phone in your palm,

are so intertwined with our modern lives that most of us would struggle to

function without them. But the computers themselves don’t “know” anything,

it’s the people who program them that allow these machines to take humanity

to new heights. As computer pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper once said,

“Programming is more than an important practical art. It is also a gigantic

undertaking in the foundations of knowledge.” Learn all about what she meant

during our annual Computer Science Education Weekend on December 14 and 15.

Hands-On

Explore how we can measure and collect data about ourselves by testing your

hand grip strength, then check out the code that makes this program run.

Challenge yourself with the Fruit Loops activity where you program a robot

“farmer” to pick up the “harvest.” Then, create a Tic-Tac-Toe game using

code cards. The goal? To write a program that consistently wins against your

opponent every time! These are some of many hands-on activities making

the weekend memorable.

You’ll want to take a break during all that action with some live music. The robot

band will take care of that as they dance, play instruments, and perform other

activities that will have you wondering if they just might be human.

Experts in the House

If you’re going to learn about computers, you’ll need some human guidance,

and several people are coming to the Museum to offer it. Meet local inventors,

computer scientists, and roboticists who will tell you about the basics and what

we can look forward to in the near future.

Computers bring us to the cutting edge, and so does the fun-filled return of

Computer Science Education Weekend!

Free with Exhibit Halls admission; free for members. For more information: mos.org/events.

IMAX® Dome Goes DigitalIconic Mugar Omni Theater leaps into the future!

For more than 30 years, Museum visitors have been able

to scale mountains, plunge to the depths of the seas, and

explore cultures across the globe through the unique domed

screen of the Mugar Omni Theater. Now, it’s time to look

ahead! Starting Monday, January 6, the theater, featuring

New England’s only IMAX® Dome screen, will be closed

for several months while it receives a digital upgrade.

Transformational Gift

The Omni’s cutting-edge conversion is made possible thanks

to a transformational gift from David Mugar, chairman

and CEO of Mugar Enterprises, Inc. The state-of-the-art 4K/

digital laser projection system will replace the 70mm film

used since the theater opened in 1987. “The new technology

is ready and we want to make sure that the New England

area has the most updated Omni experience,” Mugar says.

“By upgrading to digital, the Museum will be able to capture

the minds of a new generation.”

Omni Origin

It is thanks to Mugar that the theater exists at all. In 1985

when he was a Museum trustee, Mugar and others on the

board visited an Omni theater in Minneapolis at the urging

of then-Museum director Roger Nichols. Mugar says he

became “a huge fan of Omni” after this, and made a sizable

gift to fund the creation of the theater named after his parents

Marian G. and Stephen P. Mugar.

The venue opened March 21, 1987 with the space shuttle film

The Dream is Alive. Since then, more than 18.5 million people

have been thrilled, educated, and inspired under the dome.

Today, it is still the only 180-degree IMAX® Dome theater

in New England.

Vibrant Vision

Along with the projection system upgrade, the theater will

undergo total refurbishment, including new lighting, audio,

seats, and the queue outside. And the Museum recently

secured major funding from MathWorks®, another longtime

champion of the Museum and the Mugar Omni Theater, to

create a new pre-show for the venue’s anticipated reopening

in the spring, as well as a new film that celebrates New

England and its people. This feature-length Omni film,

to be produced by Cosmic Picture with a release date in

2021, will take inspiration from the short film New England

Time Capsule, which delighted millions of Museum visitors

for over a decade.

The theater closes for renovations January 6. The refurbished Mugar Omni Theater is scheduled to reopen in the spring.

“By UPGRADING to DIGITAL,

the Museum will be able to capture

the minds of a NEW GENERATION.”

Last Chance to Experience BODY WORLDS!Revealing anatomical exhibition from Gunther von Hagens is here through January 5.

Since the summer arrival of Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The

Cycle of Life, one of the world’s most intriguing traveling exhibitions, visitors

throughout New England and beyond have ventured to the Museum to get

a good look at the human body on full display—showing how healthy (and

unhealthy) choices can affect our bodies and help write the stories of our lives.

If you haven’t yet visited, or if you plan to return, be sure to come in before it

closes. And remember, members pay just $7 to see this awe-inspiring exhibit!

Through the Years

What makes this edition of the BODY WORLDS series different from its

predecessors is it allows you to journey through a lifetime. The more than 100

real human specimens show how the body changes—from infancy to old age—

and in all its conditions, from health to distress to disease.

Plastinate and Preserve

These human specimens are preserved through Plastination, a technique

invented by anatomist and licensed physician Dr. Gunther von Hagens more

than 40 years ago. The bodies come from donors who will them during their

lifetimes to serve the BODY WORLDS mission to “inspire visitors to become

aware of the fragility of their bodies and to recognize the anatomical individual

beauty inside each of us.”

The use of real bodies in unquestionably a key element to making this

exhibition so remarkable. Authentic human bodies show details of disease,

physiology, and anatomy that cannot be captured by artificial models. Here, you

can make the most of this experience, thoughtfully observing real specimens in

a safe, educational environment, now through January 5 only.

Admission to this exhibition requires purchase of a separate timed ticket. Members receive a discount (details in calendar).

BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life Closes January 5

Continue Exploring! While you’re here, be sure to investigate the

human organism from many different angles in our popular, interactive

Hall of Human Life. With more than 70 hands-on components, this

exhibit can really change how you think about your own biology and

manage your health. Green Wing, Level 2

3 Aim for the Stars A full house received inspiration from Captain

Scott Kelly in October when the retired astronaut

took the stage to receive the Bradford Washburn

Award. Kelly spoke about his record-setting

visit to space and his personal reflections on

leadership, teamwork, and testing limits. The

Washburn Award is named for the Museum’s

founding director and has been presented since

1964 to individuals who embody his spirit of

adventure and ability to translate and interpret

STEM concepts for the public.

4 Climate Strike Museum staff members joined other

concerned citizens on Friday, September 20

in front of Science Park and at City Hall Plaza

to demand action on climate change. The local

rally was part of the Global Climate Strike

movement—a broad coalition of youth groups,

NGOs, unions, and social movements across

the world. Museum employees were proud

to stand with young leaders from all over

Massachusetts who are working to curb the

environmental threat.

1 Cheers for Cummings Recognizing their generous support of

capital programs and exhibit development

projects, the Museum presented Bill and

Joyce Cummings and the Cummings

Foundation with the prestigious Colby Award

at the fall Colby Society event. Founded

in 1986 with a focus on giving back to the

Greater Boston community, Cummings

Foundation has inspired generations of

Boston area residents through its generous

support of the Museum and other causes.

Prior to the Colby event, Jack W. Szostak, PhD,

received the Walker Prize and presented his

lecture, The Origin of Life on the Early Earth.

2 Sci-K Success More than 400 people came out to the

Esplanade this fall to participate in and

support the Museum’s first-ever Sci-K 5K

fun run. Runners and walkers moved down

a five-kilometer path, some of them wearing

science-inspired attire and other zany

clothing. After the run, top participants were

awarded for their costumes and fundraising

while all attendees enjoyed food and activities

into the afternoon. Funds raised from the

event support the Museum and its important

role as an informal STEM learning center.

Did You Know? One of the first modern model train sets was produced by the Lionel company in 1901 and was supposed to just serve as a store-window display. But shoppers were more interested in the display than the store’s products. See and interact with model trains in All Aboard! Trains at Science Park, on exhibit through January 7.
