Carol Meschkow, President

The Friends are so grateful to the POB Community for helping make our Annual Book Sale Fundraiser such an enormous success. We thank our neighbors and friends for your kind donations of books, volunteering your time, and for browsing our Sale. The proceeds go directly towards programs and gifts to help enhance our 5 Star Library's outstanding array of services and offerings.

We also would like to express our continued appreciation to the Marriott Residence Inn, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Four Points by Sheraton and Holiday Inn Plainview for their extremely generous Raffle donations of an overnight stay and scrumptious breakfast buffet in their luxurious facilities. Prize winners have all shared what a treat this “stay-cation” was in these gems right in our own backyard. We also thank our donors for sending along LPs and CDs for the sale. They were popular purchases.

Special thanks to the Community Service Department, Children and Teen Library Staff and Administration for all their invaluable assistance and support, and for the wonderful custodial staff who worked so hard behind the scenes this fall at the Book Sale.

FAMILY CENTER @ THE PLAINVIEW-OLD BETHPAGE PUBLIC LIBRARYDECEMBER 2018 • JANUARY/ FEBRUARY 2019

WWW.POBLIB.ORG PAT POLLACK, DEPARTMENT MANAGER

FIND “BOOK OWL”Our BOOK OWL has returned from her summer vacation. Will you be able to find where the BOOK OWL is? Throughout the month of December, Family Center will be visited by a little snowy owl, and it will be your job to find her. Owls only move at night, and so does the BOOK OWL. Come morning she will be asleep in her nook. When you spot her, show a Family Center librarian where she is and you can get a little prize. As BOOK OWL likes to sleep in different nooks, you will always have to find her new nook each morning. Can you find BOOK OWL in her nook?

1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN CHALLENGE (continues enrollment)The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, toddler, and/or preschooler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around five years of age, you have more time than you think. (So get started). The key is perseverance. To help, the Family Center will offer incentives. Come into Family Center and sign up today. You will receive a packet and bag to get you started. If your child was enrolled in the Summer Reading Program those books can be counted.

Registration for the following programs is required and limited. In order to register for a Family Center program, your child's date of birth MUST be on file in the Family Center. A birth certificate or passport will be required as proof of age. Registration for all programs is age specific. Sign up in the Family Center or by telephone with your library card. ALL PROGRAMS ARE AGE SPECIFIC. NO YOUNGER OR OLDER SIBLINGS UNLESS SPECIFIED.

Our survey of love masterworks will begin in Egyptian times and will end in modern times.

Bartolomé Estebán Murillo and the Golden Age of Spainwith Inés Powell • Thursday, January 10 at 2:00 pm Bartolomé Estebán Murillo (1617 - 1682) was a leading Sevillian painter of the Golden Age of Spain. Murillo remained one of the most admired and popular of all European artists in the 18th and early 19th century.

Inés Powell, art historian and educator, who has been associated with the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1982, brings her gallery talks to the Library. Each presentation will cover art history and set the stage for discussions of different periods, styles, cultural and social framework from all over the world, spanning many centuries.
