The Health Ministry had great participation October 28, from several of the surrounding healthcare organizations in the

Broadview area. The Health Fair was sensational! The focus was Mental Health for all ages. Additionally there were free

flu shots, several health related screenings and this year offered free massages from a licensed massage therapist.

A special thanks to the members of the Health Ministry for all of their time and efforts in organizing this annual event.

December 2017/January 2018

We recently wrapped up Family Week in October, so it is fitting that we interview Shirley Clanton! Shirley wrote the

song, “Thank God for Family,” that was debuted on Family Day a few years ago. Here is more about Shirley’s Christian

journey.

Valerie: How did you learn about BMBC, and how long have you been a member?

Shirley: My co-worker, Calvin Giles, invited me. I was looking for a new church home, and was intrigued that Broad-

view was not selling anything in their announcements, and not selling church dinners.

Valerie: How did you and your husband get your children to be committed to Bible School and auxiliaries?

Shirley: Believe it or not, we did not have to pull teeth. They wanted to come. Their friends attended, and our children

did not want to be left out. Our boys were ushers and later joined the choir. Our daughter joined the choir. They may not

have understood everything, but they understood the importance of salvation.

Valerie: Do you work in the music field? What led you to write the song, “Thank God for Family?”

Shirley: As a teenager, I wrote poetry, jingles, and songs. I wrote the Farewell Song for my High School graduation. At

the time, I did not realize that God blessed me with this talent. I thought about pursuing music, but chose Healthcare

instead. When I joined Broadview, I found the Music Ministry second to none. I wrote more, and now have a notebook

full of songs. But it was Era Sherman who asked me to write a song for Family Day.

Valerie: What auxiliaries are you involved with?

Shirley: I am the Junior Choir advisor, a second soprano in the choir, and a member of the Youth Movement and Crisis

Resource Team.

Valerie: How do you keep the youth so motivated and get their parents to bring them to rehearsals faithfully?

Shirley: The children inspire me with their energy and how they worship! I love them and they love me. I get to know

each child by name. I connect with their parents on social media and communicate well with them. I am flexible because

the children’s schedules are so full and structured, and they don’t drive themselves. I wait for all the children to arrive

and assist them, before I go into the choir stand. We have a great Junior Choir Staff and we all go through background

checks for child protection.

Valerie: What do you love best about BMBC?

Shirley: Definitely the Christian Education. I like that Pastor Hopson and Pastor Parker teach us to read the Bible for

ourselves (2 Timothy 2:15), and to have a personal prayer life.

Valerie: What do you think Broadview could improve on?

Shirley: Continued communication with our Youth and Young Adults. It is also nice to allow them to head some of the

auxiliaries, because it will allow them to grow and encourage others to do the same.

Valerie: What is your favorite song that you and the choir sing?

Shirley: I have so many favorite songs! Currently, my favorite is “My God is Bigger!”

Valerie: You look like you do not age. How do you reduce stress?

Shirley: I have stress and a range of emotions like everyone else. But I pray and call on my Christian friends to pray for

me. I fast, and I listen to Christian music. I seek God, go into my closet, and fall on my knees.

I felt blessed and encouraged after speaking to Shirley. Her spirit is so uplifting that it can make any member of BMBC

want to say, “Thank God for Family!”

The Broadview Missionary Baptist Church (BMBC) Security Ministry is made up of BMBC members only. The Security

Ministry assists members, secures our perimeter, creates guidelines and action plans so that they can respond to emer-

gencies and handle critical incidents that may arise at the church. They also work very closely with the Crisis Interven-

tion Team (CIT). Pictured below are many of our Security Ministry Team members.
