It's just a small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree. No name, no identification, no inscrip-tion. It has peeked through the branches of our tree for the past ten years or so. It all began because my husband Mike hated Christmas--oh, not the true meaning of Christmas, but the commercial as-pects of it--the frantic running around at the last minute to get the gifts given in desperation because you couldn't think of anything else. Knowing he felt this way, I decided one year to bypass the usual and reached for something special just for Mike. The inspiration came in an unusual way. Our son, who was 12 that year, was wrestling at the junior level at school. Shortly before Christmas, there was a non-league match against a team sponsored by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in sneakers so ragged that shoestrings seemed to be the only thing holding them together, presented a sharp contrast to our boys in their spiffy uni-forms and sparkling new wrestling shoes. As the match began, I was alarmed to see that the other team was wrestling without headgear, a kind of light helmet designed to protect a wrestler's ears. It was a luxury the ragtag team obviously could not afford. Well, we ended up walloping them.. And as each of their boys got up from the mat, he swaggered around in his tatters with false bravado, a kind of street pride that couldn't acknowledge defeat. Mike, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, "I wish just one of them could have won," he said. "They have a lot of potential, but losing like this could take the heart right out of them." Mike loved kids - all kids - and he knew them, having coached little league football, baseball and lacrosse. That's when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought an assortment of wres-tling headgear and shoes and sent them anonymously to the inner-city church. On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Mike what I had done and that this was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and in succeeding years. For each Christmas, I followed the tradition--one year sending a group of mentally handicapped youngsters to a hockey game, another year a check to a pair of elderly brothers whose home had burned to the ground the week before Christmas, and on and on. The envelope became the highlight of our Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning and our children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad lifted the envelope from the tree to reveal its contents. As the children grew, the envelope never lost its allure. The story doesn't end there. We lost Mike last year due to cancer. When Christmas rolled around, I was still so wrapped in grief that I barely got the tree up. But Christmas Eve found me placing an envelope on the tree, and in the morning, it was joined by three more. Each of our children, unbeknownst to the others, had placed an envelope on the tree for their dad. The tradition has grown and someday will expand even further with our grandchildren standing to take down the envelope. Mike's spirit, like the Christmas spirit, will always be with us. May we all remember Christ, who is the reason for the sea-son, and the true Christmas spirit this year and always.

What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent

wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace.

VESTRY CANDIDATE FOR 2018-2021- VICTOR BAILEY

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALL SAINTS’?

Rodney and I were married in April of 2015 and were not allowed to attend either of the two churches we and our families grew up in due to the bylaws of the Southern Missionary Baptist Church and its negative views on Gay individuals and or families. We both agreed that we wanted to find a church that would support not only our marriage but would encourage and welcome our active par-ticipation. We both believe that families who worship together are stronger through a common faith in God. So, we began to make inquiries as to local churches that would not only receive and welcome us as fellow Christians but as a devoted couple united in Christ. We were quickly invited to attend All Saints by Barbara and Glenn Thompson and also by Bill and Linda Mitrik. This began

our Journey with The All Saints community. We felt very welcomed and have continued to grow in faith as part of the All Saints Community. After almost one year of attendance Rodney and I decided we wanted to join All Saints as official members and discussed the process of being received as official members with Father and Mother Brown. They were very supportive and encouraged us to participate in the confirmation classes and we were received

into the Episcopal Church on June 18th, 2016 by Bishop George. Glenn Thompson presented Rodney and I for our Reception

HOW HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED AT ALL SAINTS”!

Once Rodney and I felt slightly more confident in the Episcopal worship services we knew active participation was an important part of fellowship. We both believe that we not only should support our church financially, but we should also tithe our time and talents. We have actively participated in most community gatherings and from the very first year volunteered to help with the bi-annual barbeques. We have made some great friends through this process. We began our fellowship and attended the 8 o'clock service which allowed us to strength our knowledge and understanding of the Episcopal worship service. I decided to sign up as a greeter at the 8 o'clock service so I could get to know more of the congregation and allow other members to get to know me. Then Rodney decided to join the choir and we began to split our time between the two Sunday services so I could greet and Rodney could sing in the choir. This year I too decided to join the choir and we are each planning to volunteer with our community outreach programs. Rodney will begin this month helping with the 2nd Wednesday Bingo program in Partnership with the Morristown housing authority. I will be assisting with Food on foot beginning this month. I have also had the opportunity to present at the Agape Wednesday evening gathering. I decided to share information on the Power of Positive Prayer. A subject very near and dear to me. I gained my understanding of the power of prayer through my training as an ordained Chaplain with my former church in Miami, FL., Unity on the Bay. Rodney and I have also participated during the official visits by the Bishop to our Parish.

I am continuing to be open and receptive through prayer to calls of service to my church and community.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO ACCEPT A NOMINATION TO THE ALL SAINTS’ VESTRY?

As I have grown in fellowship at All Saints and with much prayer I felt the nomination was an amazing opportunity for me to support and help expand a ministry that has been so supportive of Rodney and me. I truly believe in the sign in front of our Parish, "All are Welcomed". Father Mark has taken up the mantel of compassion for all and I believe that message deserves to be carried to the farthest corners of our greater Lakeway community and be-yond. I truly was over joyed to have received the nomination.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL POSITIVELY IMACT ALL SAINTS’ MISSION TO LOVE, PROCLAIM, LEARN AND MINISTER!

I believe the foundational elements of a strong church are already present at All Saints'. We demonstrate weekly our ability to love one another as we love God. I want to express the love I feel from my personal relationship with God and be able to convey that love to others. I want to let others see the God in me as I see the God in them. I will profess my faith in God with zeal and hold true to the belief that God is ever present in all things. I have been a lifelong student of the word of God and know that all answers are present through prayer and the reading of God’s word. I seek knowledge and under-standing with an openness and belief that God is ever present in the learning process. I have worked in various churches in my lifetime and have always served as God has directed me to do so. I have served as an Adult and youth teacher, in a music ministry, as a Chaplain, pastoral care attendant, Direc-tor of youth programs and on the Financial advisory board, all of which helped grow and expand the ministry of the churches I attended and as directed by God. I know with my many years of service in the church and my belief that if we tithe our time, talents and treasures we can expand our churches ability to serve our community without limits.

IN A BRIEF STATEMENT WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TH CONGREGATION TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

First, I would want to say thank you to all who have welcomed Rodney and I and made us feel as though we have always been members at All Saints. And now I want you to know that each of you can count on me as much as I feel I could count on each of you. This vestry nomination is a very significant step for me to demonstrate my life long desire to take up of a mantel of dedicated service to God and the church. I was baptized at the age of 7 into the Southern Missionary Baptist Church as is common in the Baptist faith. I was met with many challenges in my youth as a result of coming out in my teen years and often ridiculed and rejected by the church but never by God. My faith helped me develop a greater since of empathy for those that society might not otherwise want to except or even extend a hand of fellowship. The Episcopal church has demonstrated its ability to recognize the greatest Christ presence in each of us and welcome all and for this I feel very blessed to have found this fellowship. I have been very fortunate over the years to participate and serve some amazing churches in Florida and North Carolina, but I had a profound longing for a more traditional liturgy and service. Now I have found the best of both worlds, a welcoming church that excepts me as a child of Christ and provides fellowship under the direction of an amazing

minister and Rector.

*I have read the information concerning Requirements for Vestry Members and I affirm that if called to service on the Vestry I would be prepared to support and advance the Statement of Purpose and to fulfill to the best of my ability all of the stated Requirements for Vestry Members.

I feel God has led me to accept and know He will lead me to use my talents to continue the positive leadership of my predecessors. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL POSITIVELY IMACT ALL SAINTS’ MISSION TO LOVE, PROCLAIM, LEARN AND MINISTER! Having been a member of All Saints’ for 40+ years, I have seen many changes, but the one consistency has been the love of our parish family, the de-votion of our members to continue to go forward when times looked discouraging and to grasp every opportunity to share our mission throughout the community. I hope that I have been a part of that past and will continue. IN A BRIEF STATEMENT WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TH CONGREGATION TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALL SAINTS’? We retired to Lake Cherokee and started looking for a church home. One of Patty’s special friends had told us how in-clusive the Episcopal Church is; that appealed to us. We wanted a smaller church and were warmly welcomed at All

Saints. Thank you, George and Lena Giles. I also liked that the crazy Episcopalians were barbecuing. HOW HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED AT ALL SAINTS”! I like to give back the blessings I receive, and All Saints has blessed us. Carol Jean asked me to consider the Vestry; I would like to share my strengths and talents such as they are. HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL POSITIVELY IMACT ALL SAINTS’ MISSION TO LOVE, PROCLAIM, LEARN AND MINISTER! I have been fortunate to always work in a helping profession, and caring comes naturally to me. Any way that I can aid in our church’s ministries will be a gift for me, and I pray for others. IN A BRIEF STATEMENT WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TH CONGREGATION TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? My wife and I have been happily married for 45 years. We have a daughter “of the heart” and two beautiful grands. VESTRY CANDIDATE FOR 2018-2021—SUSAN FUHR

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALL SAINTS’?

About 31 years ago, when my husband and I were looking for a church to attend, my husband, Jim, who is a “cradle” Episcopalian, in-sisted on going to All Saints. At the time, I was a Methodist. After our first visit to All Saints we were “hooked” and didn’t visit anywhere else! We were so welcomed by everyone, and our children were happy at All Saints as well. Besides the people at All Saints, I love the liturgy, Eucharist and the reverence of our services. In addition, the opportunity for the parish to serve and participate in the worship service is so appealing. At the time, Father Smokey was the Priest and he encouraged us to become more involved, which we did. I was confirmed, our children were baptized, and later confirmed. I taught

Youth Sunday School, served on the Vestry, became a Chalice Bearer/Intercessor, a lector, and participated in other church activities.

HOW HAVE YOU PARTICIPATED AT ALL SAINTS”!

In addition to what I mentioned above, I regularly attend the 10:30 service (when we aren’t traveling or visiting grandchildren in NC!). I was a co-leader with Jim Sharp for the Disciples of Christ in Community (DOCC) program, served on the Stewardship Committee as facilitator for breakout sessions under Reverend Scherry, and completed three years of Education For Ministry (EFM). I am planning to complete my fourth year when it is offered again. I am now serving on the ECW Planning Committee, a regular Bingo participant, worked the ECW rummage sale, hosted the ECW retreat last summer at

our home, and served on the Search Committee for a new Priest. I also participate in the BBQ, Foyer, and various church activities.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO ACCEPT A NOMINATION TO THE ALL SAINTS’ VESTRY?

As mentioned above, I recently served on the Search Committee for eighteen months. I so enjoyed all the activities and work involved; conducting three facilitated parish sessions, developing the All Saints Profile from the information obtained at these parish sessions, holding telephone and person to person interviews with potential candidates, and finally making the offer to Father Mark (which thankfully he accepted). Our Search Committee was such a great team and I found that I really missed it. I felt the need to fill the gap. When I was asked to consider a nomination, through thoughts and prayer,

I realized that serving on the Vestry would fill that gap.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU WILL POSITIVELY IMACT ALL SAINTS’ MISSION TO LOVE, PROCLAIM, LEARN AND MINISTER!

I will continue to increase support and participation in all our numerous ministries such as Outreach, Evangelism, Parish Life, Pastoral Care and Worship. I will continue serving as Chalice Bearer/Intercessor. I would also like to take training to become a Eucharistic Visitor. I would like to see expansion of

Adult Christian Formation through providing opportunities such as EFM, DOCC and other adult classes.

IN A BRIEF STATEMENT WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TH CONGREGATION TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

Should the parish family ask me to serve on the Vestry, I will make myself available to listen to ideas and concerns as well as fulfill my duties and

responsibilities of the Vestry and other ministries as needed.

*I have read the information concerning Requirements for Vestry Members and I affirm that if called to service on the Vestry I would be prepared to

support and advance the Statement of Purpose and to fulfill to the best of my ability all of the stated Requirements for Vestry Members.

Why Bother with Adult Formation? Christian education for adults has been a concern in the Church since its very beginnings. If, as we often say, the primary teach-ers of children are the parents (and the rest of the village) then a continuing conversion to the faith is critical for rearing our youth. Successful models for adult classes are not the “schooling model” that depends upon remedial instruc-tion, guest speakers, and the allocation of resources. In fact, the successful programs share only one important com-ponent: conversation. At this parish we are moving our starting time to 9:10 on Sunday mornings in order to give more people the opportunity to have important conversation about faith and faith-in-action. We meet in the Memorial Room. We officially conclude by 9:45 so that choir members can make it to rehearsal, but other folks in the class often stay for continued dialog. We have coffee, tea, and snacks . . . and prayer. We hope that you will consider joining us each week. Wednesday morning Bible Study, Wednesday evening Agape programs, and a host of other cooperative ventures with Evan-gelism, Youth and Children, and Outreach make this feature of our parish extraordinary. As the Jesuit Voices author Jane Regan says, “We can speak of the space needed for sustained critical conversation among adults as having three dimensions. The first is the physical space. Attention to comfort, aesthetics and details are all in service to the creation of a space where adults can gather to talk with other adults about things that matter. Next there is a psychic space, where hospitality is of the essence. It is to be a safe space where telling stories is welcome and recalled faith experiences are heard as just that, a person’s experience. Finally, there needs to be temporal space, that is, time marked off in the rhythm of the parish that allows for the continuing conversation.” At All Saints’ we have this! Thanks be to God!
