Have you ever wondered why the calligraphy in the Torah seems to explode with light? The rabbis talk about it being black fire on white fire. The black fire is the words on the parchment. The white fire is the space between the words. Here at Congregation Kneseth Israel, we experience this interplay of fire and words frequently: When our students in Torah School write midrash (another form of the spaces between the words); when our Confirmation students explain a text and teach me something new; on a Saturday morning, during the Torah discussion, there is electricity in the air. On Wednesday, December 6, we will have another opportunity to experience the light from words of Torah. Sofer (scribe) Neil Yerman will be here to evaluate our Torah scrolls ahead of some repairs that need to happen. Then, at 7:30 PM, we will gather to listen to him explain about Hebrew Calligraphy and its inherent beauty. Every participant will have the opportunity to take home a Hertz Chumash for your own use. This program is funded by the Torah Fund, in conjunction with the Saint John’s Bible Tour, and will illustrate the differences and similarities between the calligraphy in the Torah and the calligraphy in the Saint John’s Bible. One of the things I learned working on this project is, that for the ink in the Saint John’s Bible, they add a little egg yolk, much like when we glaze challah with an egg wash. That’s what makes the ink shiny and reflect light. The month of Kislev, this year corresponding to December, is all about light as the days get shorter, still we celebrate Chanukah. The rabbis of the Talmud argued about how to light the Chanukah lights. Rabbi Shammai argued that we should light eight candles the first night and reduce the light each night, to re-enact the miracle. Rabbi Hillel argued that we should start with one candle on the first night and increase the light each night, to increase our joy. The rabbis sided with Hillel and that is still what we do. 330 Division Street Elgin, Illinois 60120 Ph: 847.741.5656 Fax: 847.741.5924 www.ckielgin.org December 2017 The Voice of Congregation Kneseth Israel RABBI MARGARET FRISCH KLEIN RICHARD JOHNSON, President [email protected] [email protected] HEATHER BAUMANN WEISER, Director of Education CKI OFFICE [email protected] [email protected] Kislev – Tevet 5778 What ways can we consider increasing our light? Twenty five years ago, Dr. BatshevaKerem and Dr. Eitan Kerem mappedthe genetic mutation profile ofcystic fibrosis among differentJewish ethnic groups in Israel. Sincethen, life expectancy for individualswith cystic fibrosis has shifteddramatically, thanks in part to theirmedical and genetic research andongoing commitment to fighting the disease. These Israeli doctors, long married, representtwo of the world’s major cystic fibrosisresearch centers: the Hadassah MedicalOrganization and Hebrew University. Today, the Kerems’ research serves as a map for thegenetic counseling many Jewish couplesundergo before having children.

UNDERSTANDING JEWISH RISKS

Cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic disease, causes athick mucus buildup in the lungs and otherorgans that leads to breathing difficulty andincreases susceptibility to life-threateninginfections. More than 10 million Americanscarry a faulty CF gene, many unknowingly.

Thanks to the Doctors Kerem, weknow that for Ashkenazi Jews, there’sa 1 in 24 chance of being a carrier, while for Sephardi/Mizrahi Jews it’s a1 in 26 chance. If two people whocarry the mutated gene have a child, the child has a 1 in 4 chance ofhaving cystic fibrosis. In the 1980s,when the Kerems made their

breakthrough, CF patients generally didn’tsurvive their teens. Today in the United States, where more than 30,000 people are living withcystic fibrosis, the median life expectancy ofsomeone with CF is 37. Roughly 1,000 newcases are diagnosed each year, most by age 2.

A VISIONARY & BRIDGE BUILDER

A well-published research leader in cysticfibrosis medicine, Dr. Eitan Kerem’s life’s workhas focused on developing drug therapies thathelp CF patients overcome genetic mutations.Currently head of the Division of Pediatrics atthe Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), hefounded the Center for Children with ChronicDiseases at Hadassah Mt. Scopus.

NEW THERAPIES, LONGER LIVES

Cystic fibrosis mutations occur in the CFTRgene, short for cystic fibrosis transmembraneconductance regulator. This fall, Dr. Kerem willlead a new HMO clinical trial on a drug thatinstructs cells to avoid mutation. In April, Dr.Kerem met with positive results in a phase IIclinical trial for a drug that produces enzymesto make CF patients’ mucus less viscous.

NEW FRONTIERS: THE NEXT 25 YEARS

As we recognize the progress made in the past25 years, Kerem has a clear vision of what wecan achieve in the next 25 years: Nothing shortof a cure for the disease. But is that realistic?“There is a good chance,” he says, “that within25 years we will have what we need to cureour CF patients.”

For Dr. Kerem and the Hadassah MedicalOrganization, that’s just the beginning. “Thetrue breakthrough in confronting CF,” says Dr.Kerem, “will only occur when everyone withthis disease, no matter where he or she lives, can expect to achieve a normal life expectancyand quality of life.”
