Verna Lee Ferris Hazan

This story is about the angel known as Verna. Her mother called her Verna Lee, and that was also her stage name when she had been a dancer. How did I know she was an angel? I knew it the instant that I met her. She had come to our apartment, at Marcella’s invitation, to get me started on exercise. I opened our door, and I found myself in a flood of light, coming from her smile. It was not a cosmetic smile, not a “say cheese” smile, not a smile out of a dentist’s ad, it was not the common “Hi, let’s be friends” smile. It was a smile flowing from an unpremeditated source of benevolence. Only an angel could produce it, and I instantly and forever fell in love with her. Behind that smile there was unfailing kindness. In all the years that I knew, followed, loved my Verna, I never knew her to call out someone, to snap at anyone. She met every objectionable act or word, with inexhaustible forbearance and tolerance. She was generous beyond definition of the word. She never hesitated to give, to give a piece of equipment, to give extra, unbilled, time after hours, nor, to anyone in need of encouragement, to give herself. The studio she founded, Dance Discovery, where she developed exercises derived from the dynamics of dance, thrived for fifty years. It was the

place to go to in Sarasota, for fitness training, and for inspiration. Verna Lee was no commonplace angel. She was a Southern gal, to the manner born. She was Class. She had style. Verna had a gifted eye. Her greatest gift, however, was the gift of love. It came out of a great, pure heart, a love that she bestowed profusely on friends, students, lovers, even on casual acquaintance. Verna was love. As we clasp her memory to our heart we hope to let some of her goodness cling to it.
