Dear Families, Friends, and Community members: Friday, December 1 st marks the end of the first trimester. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, December 8 th . We encourage you to review the report card scores with your student and discuss the things they feel especially proud of accomplishing and what they find challenging. Our report cards are based on the Washington K-12 Learning Standards which incorporate the Common Core State Standards. For an overview of what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level, visit the Office of Superintendent of Public Instrucon (OSPI)s website at hp://www.k12.wa.us/resources/YourChildsProgress.aspx. Your childs academic progress towards achieving these standards is what is marked on the front of the report card. Behaviors that help students be successful in school are marked on the reverse. If you have any quesons or concerns about the scores, please contact your childs teacher. The end of the first trimester is also an important me to review your childs aendance. Students who are at school on me, every day, and stay all day have the best chance of succeeding in school. Missing ten percent (or about 18 days in a school year) is considered chronic absenteeism and can lead to students falling behind and having difficulty catching up. We have been in school about 60 days, so missing 6 days at this point in the year is considered chronic. We will be closely monitoring aendance and sending home leers when students have 2 unexcused absences or beyond. The law changed last year to require elementary schools to conference with families when students reached 5 excused absences. The excepons to this are when students have prior approval or bring a note from the doctor. Aendance leers will ask that you call to make an appointment to discuss ways to improve student aendance. Please do everything you can to make sure your student is at school every day, on me and all day. Thank you for all that you do to support your child and provide them with the best opportunies to be successful in school and beyond. Please let me know if you have any quesons or concerns. Dear Families, Friends, and Community members:

Friday, December 1st marks the end of the first trimester. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, December 8th. We encourage you to review the report card scores with your student and discuss the things they feel especially proud of accomplishing and what they find challenging. Our report cards are based on the Washington K-12 Learning Standards which incorporate the Common Core State Standards. For an overview of what students are expected to know and be able to do at each grade level, visit the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI)’s website at http://www.k12.wa.us/resources/YourChildsProgress.aspx. Your child’s academic progress towards achieving these standards is what is marked on the front of the report card. Behaviors that help students be successful in school are marked on the reverse. If you have any questions or concerns about the scores, please contact your child’s teacher. The end of the first trimester is also an important time to review your child’s

attendance. Students who are at school on time, every day, and stay all day have the

best chance of succeeding in school. Missing ten percent (or about 18 days in a

school year) is considered chronic absenteeism and can lead to students falling

behind and having difficulty catching up. We have been in school about 60 days, so

missing 6 days at this point in the year is considered chronic. We will be closely

monitoring attendance and sending home letters when students have 2 unexcused

absences or beyond. The law changed last year to require elementary schools to

conference with families when students reached 5 excused absences. The exceptions

to this are when students have prior approval or bring a note from the doctor.

Attendance letters will ask that you call to make an appointment to discuss ways to

improve student attendance. Please do everything you can to make sure your

student is at school every day, on time and all day. Thank you for all that you do to

support your child and provide them with the best opportunities to be successful in

school and beyond.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Warmly,

Michele Ricci, Principal

What’s the big deal about COUGH DROPS?

You may have heard that Lakewood School District has a policy stating that students are

not allowed to carry or consume cough drops during school. It’s TRUE!

Some suggestions are: Life Savers, Jolly Ranchers or Lemon Drops. Thankfully, there are

alternatives if your child has a cough or scratchy voice they keep them in the health

room, their pocket or backpack. Remember, if the cough is accompanied by a fever of

100.4 or greater, your child must be kept home until he/she is fever free for a full 24

hours.

Too Sick for School?

Lakewood School District works with the Snohomish Health District to help protect children from spreading communicable diseases. Keeping children home when they are too sick for school protects other students and staff from potential illness.

Fever: temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Child must be fever free without the use of fever reducing medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

Vomiting: child should not return to school for 24 hours following the last episode of vomiting.

Lice, scabies: children may not return to school until they have been treated and are live lice free. Children with scabies can be admitted after treatment.

Diarrhea: more than one watery stool in a 24 hour period, especially if the child acts or looks ill.

Chronic cough and/or runny nose: continual coughing and/or greenish nose discharge. Conditions may be contagious and may require treatment from your health care provider.

Sore throat: especially with fever or swollen glands in the neck.

Rash: body rash, especially with fever or itching.

Ear infection: with fever. Without fever they can attend school, but the child may need medical treatment and follow-up. Untreated ear infections can cause per-manent hearing loss.

Eye infection: Eye infection: pink eye (conjunctivitis), thick mucus or pus draining from eye.

Unusual appearance, behavior: abnormally tired, pale, lack of appetite, difficult to wake, confused or irritable. This is a sufficient reason to keep your child at home.

Weather Conditions and School

Every effort is made by the district to operate every day of the school year. However, on those

rare occasions of extreme weather conditions, school starting times may be delayed, bus

transportation may be limited, or school may be closed altogether.

Families should listen to AM radio stations KWYZ (1230), KRKO (1380), KOMO (1000) for

updated school information on school closures. To hear a recording regarding bus route

and schedule changes due to adverse weather conditions, please call 360-652-4501 ext.

9061. This information is also available on our website, http://www.lwsd.wednet.edu. If

your student stays home from school, the office still needs a phone call from a parent or

guardian stating that your child is home due to weather or transportation.

to be rich to be

generous.”

The PTA would like to thank all of you that participated in this year’s Fun Run

Fundraiser! We greatly appreciate your support!

Thank you to all who served!
