12-B Custer Public Power District December 2016

It’s been a great year for Custer and I want to talk about our accomplishments in 2016. We built ser-vice to about 86 accounts this year. The weather always has its ups and downs, but Custer’s distribu-tion system handled the load just fine and we will continue to handle the load in the future.

This year we built a sub-transmission line south of Arnold to serve a newly constructed substation about 10 miles south of Arnold. This was a much-needed project that will enable us to shift some load from two other overloaded substations. It took a lot of work to get that substation tied into circuits from other substations.

We always have to remember that all that outside work means in-side paper work. When you see the line worker building a new line it is really just the tip of the iceberg. It takes a ton of planning, study, engineering, material, accounting, and inspection to make things happen. I’m so proud of all of our employees, inside and out, for the huge amount of work completed this year.

Coming in 2017, we will be reconstructing a substation in Merna and a replacing several big sub-transmission line switches. We have several other projects throughout our service territory as well.

As we think about all that got done in 2016, I wanted to note a few positive things that we do in and around the communities that we serve. We contribute to the 4-H Foundation and the 4-H Camp. We sponsor youth to attend the Energy Camp in Halsey. We sponsor the Washington DC Youth Tour because we believe in educating school kids on the heritage and value of public power.

We provide scholarships to high school seniors who want to pursue a career as lineworkers and then try to employ those scholarship winners the following summer as interns. We want to keep more of our young people in the area.

We teach electrical safety in schools, participate in safety day for kids, and provide the high voltage demonstration and low voltage demonstration to communities and groups who want to learn about electricity and understand the hazards involved.

Along with other power districts, we participate in the Nebraska State Fair. We contribute to fire de-partments, chambers of commerce in the communities we serve, and we help the barbeques at fair time. We participate in economic development groups and the scenic byway.

These activities are carried out by the directors and dedicated employees of your power district. They donate their time and effort to give back to their community.

For that I am truly grateful, and if you get a chance and are so inclined, I hope you let them know that you appreciate their efforts, too.

In the meantime, have a joyous holiday season!

It Has Been Another Busy Year!
