President’s Message

Season’s Greetings!

How quickly this year has gone by! It seems we were just planningour first-ever official full Barn Hunt trial (plus picnic) in spring – andwhat a successful and fun activity that was! Time flew past as quicklyas the dogs ran in our fall Lure Coursing event. There were a fewhiccups on the way (who can forget our washed-out Specialty) but allin all, a good year. And in no time at all, here we are at the end of2016 to celebrate with our friends at our annual Christmas party.

In A High Sunny Place author Tom Corey said “…Those of us whospend our days with dogs, can often look back on our lives andmeasure our personal histories by a unique system. Not by a yearon the calendar, or a grade in school … rather by things thatoccurred during the time of a certain dog we loved…”

I have found this to be true. Our lives are a series of moments intime, measured by our companions who are with us moreconsistently than anyone or anything else. We laugh and cry (oftenat the same time) over dogs that we have loved so much, bothpresent and past, and how their companionship has led us to newfriends and new experiences that would have never been possiblewithout them.

Moving forward through the holiday season into the New Year, I lookforward to the new adventures we will all share with both our furryand human friends as we join together to celebrate yet another yearof our common bond – our schnauzers!

Happy, healthy and safe holidays to all!

A Christmas(Dog) Poem

Tonight!s my first nightas a watchdogAnd here it isChristmas Eve,

The children are sleeping all cozy upstairs,While I'm guarding the stockings and tree.

What's that now? Footsteps on the rooftop?Could it be a cat or mouse?Who's this down the chimney? A thief with a

beardAnd a big sack for robbing the house!

I'm barking, I'm growling, I'm biting his rear.He howls and jumps back in his sleigh.I scare his strange horses, they leap in the air.I've frightened the whole bunch away!

Now the house is all peaceful and quiet again. The stockings are safe as can be.Won't the kiddies be glad when they wake up

tomorrowAnd see how I've guarded the tree?

KEEP YOUR PET SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS!

The holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to includetheir furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays,it is important to try to keep your pet's eating and exercise habits asclose to their normal routine as possible. Also, please be sure to steerpets clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerousdecorations.

Be Careful with Seasonal Plants and Decorations

Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn'ttip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria, soprevent him from drinking it.

Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies cancause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Despite the urban legend, Poinsettia is not poisonous, but its thickwhite latex-like sap is irritating .to the throat and stomach.

That Holiday Glow: Don't leave lighted candles unattended. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire ifthey knock candles over. Be sure to use appropriate candleholders, placed on a stable surface. And ifyou leave the room, put the candle out!

All Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of mouth and paws' reach. A wirecan deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth andesophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet's mouth and digestive tract.

Avoid Holiday Food Dangers

Skip the Sweets: By now you know not to feed your pets chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol, but you know the lengths to which an enterprising pet will go to chomp on something yummy! Make sureto keep your pets away from unattended plates of food, and be sure to secure the lids on garbage cans.

Leave the Leftovers: Fatty, spicy and no-no human foods, as well as bones, should not be fed to yourfurry friends. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won't lead to costly medical bills.

Careful with Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place yourunattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them. If ingested, your pet could become weak, illand may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure.

Selecting Special Treats: Looking to stuff your pet's stockings? Stick with chew toys that are basicallyindestructible, Kongs that can be stuffed with healthy foods or chew treats that are designed to be safelydigestible.

Plan a Pet-Safe Holiday Gathering

House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercisewhile you're busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session.

A Room of Their Own: Give your pet his own quiet space to retreat to—complete with fresh water and aplace to snuggle. Shy pups and cats might want to hide out under a piece of furniture, in their carryingcase or in a separate room away from the hubbub.

New Year's Noise: As you count down to the new year, please keep in mind that strings of thrownconfetti can get lodged in a pet's intestines, if ingested, perhaps necessitating surgery. Noisy poppers canterrify pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears. And remember that many pets are also scaredof fireworks, so be sure to secure them in a safe, escape-proof area as midnight approaches.

JULIUS, QUEST FOR THE GOLD!.From Andy Kingery

When Julius was Best of Breed at the PhiladelphiaKennel Club dog show on Saturday, November 19under Judge Lloyd Amodei, he won his last point for hisGold Grand Championship! (Editor!s Note: To reachthis level, a dog must obtain 400 points in Best ofBreed competition, and since the maximum you canwin at one show is 5 points – it is a significant goal.)

Julius is now a GOLD GRAND CHAMPION. Finishingthis title was the reason he came out of retirement lastJune. He needed almost 80 points, but I believed hecould do it. " And with limited showing, (usually just twoweekends a month, and nothing in August) until lateOctober when we stepped up the pace to weekly, hehas accomplished this goal. "It was not easy. Also since June, he has earned a Group One Win, and fourGroup Placements, plus a very nice AOM at the Heartland Standard Schnauzer Club Specialty (with anentry of over 90), the week of the SSCA National in Houston.

Of course, he didn!t do this all by himself — his red Ferrari Go-cart isn!t allowed on the highways. So,Shawne Imler took over the driving, grooming, and handling. "I often traveled with him, but soondiscovered he does much better if I am not in the show area. "He is a mother!s boy and gets distracted if Iam around. "To give him his best chance, I have pretty much taken to staying home. "I have been presentfor a few big wins and group placements. "It is annoying, however, lurking behind posts and under tables!

In between the grooming and weekends of shows, he found time to father a litter of nine very cute littlepuppies. The mother, Nina, is an SSCA Leading Producer; she thought he was quite charming.

A Multiple Group Winner and Group Placer, he is officially GCHG CH Windsong Roman Ruler "(But still just Julius to friends and family)
