and third-place awards in two divisions, graduate students and undergraduate/secondary students. The cash prizes are supported by the registration fees and sponsorship support.

For 25 years the Southwest Florida Water Resources Conference has provided outstanding opportunities to share cutting-edge technical information, exchange views from a wide range of diverse perspectives, and engage the community of water resources expertise in our region. The Conference consistently draws in excess of 120 attendees representing a broad section of scientists, engineers, geologists, jurists, and other professionals involved in both the public and private sector aspects of water resources. This year’s event will once again be outstanding, keeping with the conference’s long tradition of bringing forward experts from a diversity of disciplines to provide relevant and timely research and professional perspectives on contemporary issues.

The Conference Committee is Tri-Chaired this year by Roxanne Gause, Florida Engineering Society, Karen Miller, Real Estate Investment Society and Don Duke, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Section (and National Board member). The Conference Host Committee is composed of American Water Resources Association (Florida Section), American Society of Civil Engineers (Florida Section, Southwest Branch), Audubon Society of Southwest Florida, Florida Engineering

Society (Calusa Chapter), Florida Gulf Coast University, Southwest Florida Association of Environmental Professionals, Southwest Florida Watershed Council, Florida Gulf Coast University, Watershed Council, Water Environment Association, Real Estate Investment Society and Caloosahatchee Riverwatch Citizens Association.

The conference agenda is currently under development and will be available on the conference webpage soon.

The Florida Gulf Coast University Student Chapter of AWRA will be helping organize student participation in the conference. University, College and High School students from across the state are strongly encouraged (and subsidized) to attend.

Students are invited to participate in the “Lunch with a Professional.” This is an event we tried a few years ago that has proved to be extremely popular with both students and professionals. Many students report their favorite thing about the Conference is the opportunity to be assigned to a practicing professional, and over lunch share insights into the profession, stories about how their careers developed and details of recent projects. In 2015, nearly a third of all attendees were students who went home with a powerful positive impression of AWRA and our society partners. Limited student housing is available for nominal cost of $25 per night at the scenic FGCU Vester Field Station, a short walk from Bonita Beach.

Welcome to another fantastic year with the Florida Section of the AWRA. I am honored to be following in the footsteps of so many wonderful AWRA Florida Section Presidents.

For those of you who do not know me, I am the shy, reserved, quiet one sitting in the back of the room.

Now that the laughter has subsided from those of you who do know me, allow me to introduce myself: I have been with Tetra Tech, Inc. for just shy of ten years, working out of the Stuart, Fl office. My primary responsibility is as Deputy Project Manager for the Loxahatchee Mitigation Bank which is located in Delray Beach, Fl. (Credits available! Call today!). For several years I have also been utilizing my legal background to serve as a contract specialist, preparing, reviewing and negotiating contract terms, nondisclosure agreements, reliance letters and more for the Tetra Tech CES business unit. Prior to coming to Tetra Tech, I practiced law at Lewis, Longman and Walker, P.A. and in Hillsborough County working primarily on water supply issues at the Hillsborough County Attorney’s office and then at the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County.

It was through Lewis, Longman that I was introduced to the AWRA Florida

Section. The first meeting I attended was held at the Hutchinson Island Marriott in 2003. I was hooked! Not only is the association composed of smart, interesting people, they are all so nice and welcoming! I don’t think there is a stranger among us. If you show up one time, you are welcomed into the fold.

I became a member of the Board in 2005 and have served on several committees including the webpage committee and the Rosanne Clementi Education Committee. I am eternally grateful to Jeremy McBryan for taking over the webpage when he joined the board. Jeremy improved our website 1000 percent.

It has been a joy to serve on the education committee and I will miss the frequent interaction with the students now that I have to prioritize my volunteer time by focusing on my new role on the Board. Of all the amazing things we do at the AWRA, supporting students is at the top of the list. In addition to our scholarships and awards, we provide financial support for students to attend the National meeting as well as each of our state section meetings. We also have Board liaisons for the students and student chapters at UF, UCF, UNF, USF, FGCU and Daytona State College.

We are off to a strong start in 2016, having the geographic locations of all of our meetings set, the date of some of our meetings set and meeting chairs lined up and ready to go!

• January 15 – Ft. Myers - 25th Annual Southwest Florida Water Resources Conference

• March 18 – Steinhatchee – chaired by Carol Hinton (UF TREEO)

• May – Tampa Area – chaired by Alex Chatham, Michael Condran and Susan Knepper (GHD)

• August 4-5 – Key Largo – chaired by Garrett Wallace (Alico)

• September – Jacksonville area – chaired by Michael DelCharco (Taylor Engineering) and Bill Lynch (GEI Consultants) – joint meeting with the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE)

• November 14-17 – AWRA 2016 Annual Water Resources Conference – Orlando

The November meeting presents a unique opportunity for the Florida Section to collaborate with National AWRA during the 2016 AWRA Annual Conference being held at the Florida Hotel & Conference Center in Orlando November 14-17.

The Florida Section will be hosting the Tuesday Night networking reception held in conjunction with the National conference. We encourage our Florida Section members to submit abstracts to present at the National Conference and to attend the conference. We will keep our members informed of the call for abstracts and other meeting information as it becomes available.

I encourage you to get involved with the Section. Attending the meetings is a start of course! But consider attending Board meetings and getting involved on a committee. The education committee is always looking for volunteers. Also take advantage of the social media sites such as FaceBook and LinkedIn. Share information about your projects or items of interest to you. Ask questions.

None of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our terrific board of directors. I congratulate my fellow officers – Mark Diblin, Vice President; Walt Reigner, Treasurer and Jeremy McBryan, Secretary. And also thank our recent past presidents, Michael DelCharco and Gary Howalt. Thank you and all the directors and Section members who make our premier Florida Section possible!

The November 2015 Technical Meeting was a unique experience for AWRA Florida as we joined the Daytona State College Institute of Marine and Environmental Studies (IMES) and the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach to host ShORE 2015 (“Sharing our Research with Everyone!”) - a daylong symposium on the Indian River Lagoon featuring the work of undergraduate and high school students together with recognized scientists throughout the region. The symposium was held at the beautiful Daytona State College News-Journal Center on the banks of the Halifax River in Daytona Beach.

ShORE 2015 brought together scientists, engineers, academics, water resources managers, students and the public to share information and learn about the latest developments related to the Indian River Lagoon – the most diverse estuary in the northern hemisphere that spans the coastline of five Florida counties along the Atlantic Ocean.

To recognize this unique meeting format and to offer continued support for the future water resources leaders of tomorrow, AWRA Florida’s Board of Directors voted to provide all student attendees with complimentary 2016 membership to AWRA Florida. Ideally, this will lead to additional student participation in AWRA Florida activities as well as provide professional development opportunities.

There are many benefits to belonging to a professional association, particularly for students:

• Networking opportunities

• Internship and employment opportunities

• Discounted rates to attend meetings

• Educational opportunities to learn about careers, industry standards, best practices, ethics, and policies from water resources leaders

Education Committee One of the primary objectives of the Rosanne Clementi Education Program is to support students by sponsoring them to attend the state and National meetings. We believe the students benefit from presenting but also from interacting with water resources professionals from across Florida, the United States and the world.

The Florida Section supported fourteen students to attend the National AWRA conference held in Denver in November. Below are notes form the students, letting us know how they benefitted from the experience.

Alice Alonso, University of Florida“If Denver didn’t greet us with the forecasted blizzard, it for sure didn’t fail in hosting a very great and successful AWRA annual conference. By combining a series of very interesting and insightful talks, panels and other networking sessions, this conference proved to be a great opportunity for sharing and discussing our research, and gaining water-related knowledge as well as professional experience. The support from the Florida section of AWRA was key for the students to benefit from this valuable experience, I am extremely grateful about that. Thank you :-)

Mitchell McMillan, University of West FloridaI thank the AWRA Florida Section for its support in helping me attend AWRA 2015, my first national conference. Not only was I exposed to a wealth of new ideas and information, but the opportunity to share my research with the broader community was an invaluable experience. The knowledge gained and connections made at AWRA have already shaped my own research, and I’m sure they will benefit my career for a long time to come.

Matt Cull, Florida Gulf Coast UniversityThanks again for the support. The conference was a tremendous learning opportunity and I am excited to become more involved with AWRA and AWRA Florida section. Let me know if there is anything else you need.

Grant Weinkam, University of FLoridaThanks to the Florida chapter for helping me participate in the national AWRA conference in Denver this past November! Not only was I able to present my University of Florida based research on wastewater reuse to an audience of professionals, but also participate in a number of technical and developmental workshops over the week. I got to attend numerous events that covered a wide variety of water quality and water resource related subject matter ranging from stream ecology to water sustainability. Additional events included a field trip to an urban river under restoration, and workshops for young professional development covering material related to networking, career path opportunities, and publishing peer reviewed journal articles. Overall, it was a great social and educational experience and I look forward to catching up with all the great members of the water resource field I got to meet at future AWRA events!

Monica Resto, University of South FloridaI would like to express my gratitude to the AWRA Florida Section for supporting my trip to Denver, Colorado for the 2015 AWRA Annual Conference. This was my first conference experience and I believe that it changed my life. I received very positive feedback for my presentation entitled “Manual Drilling in Academic Research and Training: Well Installation and Monitoring.” I was able to meet professionals and academics interested in my research and got contacts for continuing my manual drilling efforts abroad. I enjoyed all of the presentations that I attended and was happily surprised to hear hydrology content that I am currently learning in a course! I also participated in the Student Networking

Night, hosted by the Colorado AWRA Section; I networked and met professionals doing very interesting work with respect to groundwater resources. I was able to ask employers questions and received phenomenal advice; I hope to take a few graduate courses in groundwater modeling before finishing my undergraduate degree! I cannot wait to attend the next conference in Orlando, Florida.

Congratulations to AWRA Florida Section Student Member Marie Elena Grimmett, winner of the Siemmens Competition Math, Science, and Technology Grand Prize!

In March 2014, we invited Marie Elena Grimmett to present her research identifying a potential water purification method. Since then, Maria has presented and been published in a number of professional journals. In January 2013, she became the youngest author to publish original research in the 43-year history of the Journal of Environmental Quality.

Recently, Maria Elena, now a senior at Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches, won the $100,000 Grand Prize in the Individual category at the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students, for her work to identify a potential new water purification method. The Siemens Competition is the nation’s premier science research competition for high school students. Nearly 4,000 students registered for this year’s competition. A total of 1,781 projects were submitted for consideration, 466 students were named Semifinalists, and 97 were named Regional Finalists. Entries were judged at the regional level by esteemed scientists at six leading research universities which hosted the regional competitions.

Maria Elena’s project is entitled Adsorption of Sulfamethazine from Environmentally Relevant Aqueous Matrices onto Hypercrosslinked Adsorbent MN250. She found a new method to remove sulfamethazine, a commonly used veterinary antibiotic which is a common contaminate damaging both soil and the aquatic ecosystem. Maria Elena’s method utilized small plastic beads, which can be reused, applied at scale, and

implemented using delivery systems already in place for treating drinking water.

Maria Elena first became interested in her topic because she wanted to know why her well water was brown. She has spent years researching this issue, looking at the removal of fulvic and humic acids (color) from water before her current research on sulfamethazine.

Maria Elena anticipates majoring in engineering in college, and her favorite high school course is computer science. She is a member of her school’s weekly Computer Science Club and believes computer modeling and programming skills will prove useful in any scientific or engineering discipline. Maria Elena’s

mentor is Dr. Hui Li, associate professor of Environmental and Soil Chemistry at Michigan State University.

Outside of the classroom, Maria Elena is a mural artist and Art Club teacher’s assistant at the Weiss Elementary School. In this capacity, she paints murals in the school hallways and helps students with art projects. She also plays clarinet and is a member of her school’s Fencing Club.

10 AWRA National News

American Water Resources Association, Florida Section

National News The AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference was held in Denver, November 16-19. Florida Section Board Member Jeremy McBryan attended the conference and provided the information below.

Hi, As you may know, I attended the 2015 AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference, thanks in large part to AWRA Florida funding my travel expenses. Thank you so much for supporting my attendance.

I was able to interact with many students from Florida that AWRA Florida supported including several from the Oxbridge Academy, University of Florida and Florida Gulf Coast University. I also listened to several of their presentations – all did a great job and represented AWRA Florida well. See the accompanying photos.

At first, the water resources issues in Colorado (and the west) appear to be very different than Florida’s (because they have snow, mountains and a booming cannabis industry), but many of the issues are the same as ours: floods, droughts, water quality, competing demands, intense development, population booms, aging water infrastructure, data management, budget constraints, etc. But I was amazed at how ahead of the game Florida is in most categories.

The view from the conference (38th floor of the Hyatt) was amazing, and the cool sunny weather together with the 40+ amazing local breweries made it hard to stay inside all day…but I managed. Throughout the 4 days, I took note of things that worked great at the conference and things that didn’t…so hopefully, next year’s conference in Orlando will be even better.

One great experience was the state section leader’s lunch where each of us shared a bit about how each of our sections function, budgets, meeting fees, etc. AWRA Florida was by far the largest and most active group. Many sections have one big meeting/event per year, while some also have a 3-5 dinner functions a year. Many sections don’t do anything in the summer at all. Following this letter is a list of 36 AWRA Florida Section members (professionals and students) that attended the national conference. Thirty one were speakers of session moderators.

Again, thanks for supporting my attendance in Denver.
