What to eat & how to make them?Chun Beum Park E10AHibernation is a time for animals to enter “Hypnos’ cave”, but for people it is to find a comfortable place to rest. Finding a comfortable place is rather easy; it may be in bed on a soft mattress, and tucked in under layers of blankets, or on the sofa or even in one cozy corner of a room. The true hardship is what food to eat. Below are some preferred food recipes for human hibernation:

1. Marshmallow & Hot ChocolateJust by looking at the Marshmallow Experiment, no one can resist from a small squishy marshmallow. For marshmallow lovers, a marshmallow gone through a bonfire would be the top on his or her to-do-list . But original marshmallows are a great combination when dipped in hot chocolate. Although marshmallows can be bought, hot chocolate is what a b s o l u t e ly n e e d s t o b e h o m e m a d e , because it determines whether the hot chocolate accompanied by marshmallow is mouthwatering. So, how can one make hot chocolate?

Ingredients: • 2cupsofmilk• 4tablespoonsofrawhoney• 3tablespoonsofcocoapowder• 1teaspoonofvanillaextract• 1pinchofcinnamon

Steps:1. Pour themilk inapot, andwarmit on medium-high heat. Use a spoon for stirring.2. Once t he m i l k warms , add 3tablespoons of cocoa powder, and keep stirring.3. Add4tablespoonsofrawhoney,andcontinue stirring.4. At last , add 1 teaspoon of purevanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon. Gradually reduce the heat while stirring.

Voila! Now you have your hot chocolate!

2. Cheese Crackers & CoffeeRemember the British clay animation Wallace and Gromit, and how Wallace loved Wensleydale cheese crackers with a cup of coffee? Even during a space trip to space, Wallace was busy packing his cheese crackers. Every morning, every meal, and every night, he was shoving cheese cracker down his throat. So how to make cheese crackers?

Ingredients: • Thincrackers• SlicesofCheese

Steps:1. Prepare2thinlayersofcrackers2. Cut a sliceof cheese in the sameshape and size as the crackers3. Putthecutcheesebetweenthetwocrackers4. Microwavethecheesecracker, ifyouprefer it warm.

Milk softens the pancakes in side your mouth, until it disappears without evenhavingtochewit.Pancakesarenotoften sold in supermarkets as a finished product, and making your own also allows you to also choose the flavors for it. Lets try making pancakes of our own!

Ingredients:

• ½cupofmilk• 2cupsofflour• 3tablespoonsofsugar• 2tablespoonsvegetableoil• 2tablespoonsofbutter• ½teaspoonofbakingpowder• 4eggs

The History of Teddy BearsSparsh Nair E6G

Teddy bears play a major part in any kid’s life. Those furry, cute and not to forget warm dolls have a stunning history. It all started intheearly1900s(inNovemberof1902),whenPresidentTheodoreRoosevelt tookplace in a bear hunt. This bear hunt wasn't very successful, but his staff tried to cheer him by tying a Louisiana black bear cub to a tree. And, when anyone would think of it, it’s quite different subjects. A picture appeared in the Washington post as a cartoon named drawing the line in Mississippi, illustrated by cartoonist CliffordK. Berryman. Inthe cartoon it shows Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot the bear in a gesture. He knew it was very unsportsmanlike. This is what is believed to have triggered the Teddy Bear craze that only America was active in.

Soon, in1903,anAmerican toymaker inNew York named Morris Michtom and his wife Rose stitched a teddy bear together. They owned a Toyshop in New York at 404TompkinsAvenueinBrooklyn.Morriswas a Jewish immigrant born in Russia and together with his wife Rose the Founded the Ideal toy company that was famous because of the invention of the Rubik’s cube, apart from the Teddy Bear.

At about the same time, Europe wasn't too focused on the craze, and in Germany Richard Steiff created a Teddy Bear, when his ideas came from seeing bears at the zoo. The most amazing thing of all is that these happened at the same time. When an American man saw Steiffs Teddy Bear, he purchasedashipmentof3000tobesentto America. Morris Michtom was having people start asking him to sell his teddy bear that was for display at first. Unfortunately, he didn't have a name for it so he sent a sample to President Roosvelt In orderto make it named the Teddy Bear. At the sametime, in the1903Leipzig fairSteiffintroduced his teddy bears. And this is was how the American ordered the shipment.

In the craze, they started to make songs like “the Teddy bears picnic” by John W. Bratton in1906.Soon, in1909thefirstteddybearcartoon appeared, being named Little Johnny and teddy bears. This craze also included books being written, such as Deans rag book.

Throughout the history of teddy bears, we can learn that teddy bears are not mere cuddly dolls that we sleep with in our childhood. They have a long history as well. Thus, this is precisely why teddy bears should not be underestimated. Their capability to touch the hearts of thousands of children worldwide is enough to make them the heroes of our world.

History of Music: Acid House Niu Mao E10A

House music, an EDM (Electronic Dance Music) genre with some of the most popular sub-genres. You hear Progressive House playing on the radio, you hear Deep House playing in the hallways at school, and you see Electro House on the billboard music chart. Where and how did House music originate? Or should I say, what popularized this genre? L a d i e s a n d g e n t l e m e n , A c i d h o u s e i t i s .

Back in the mid 80s, this sub-genre of House music was born in Illinois, Chicago in the United States.

The first Acid House track ever, “Acid Tracks” by Phuture was played at a nightclub called Music Box in Chicago, by DJ Ron Hardy. Immediately, it was liked by the crowd. There were just something magical about the 4/4 beat minimalistic music style and squiggly-sounding bass line of Acid House, the music was rapidly spread to Europe, and other parts of the US East Coast at the late 80s, it brought significant influence to dance and pop music in the UK. Without a doubt, Acid House became the central attention of the Europe and England rave scene. The rave culture is a youth sub-culture closely tide to Electronic Dance Music, dancing and drugs. Acid house was closely related to the drug culture, the name of the genre ‘Acid’ refers to the psychotic results of drugs intake such as LSD or MDMA, because the sound of the Acid House is very psychedelic. The rave culture is a very unhealthy and dangerous lifestyle, the message of live fast die young leads an entire youth generation to corruption. Although now in the 21st century, the ‘ecstasy generation’ may not be as large in number as before, the music has always been the most important part of the culture, drugs or anything else cannot ever replace its position. With the existence of Acid House, it innovated the birth of many EDM sub-genres, like Trance, Psychedelic Trance, Techno,

Breakbeat, Drum & Bass… But most of all, it pushed House Music and the EDM genre f rom underground to be ing mainstream. Despite Acid House’s amazing history and irreplaceable influence, musically its very interesting sounding. One day I came to school a bit earlier than usual, started to play Acid House music out loud from my computer and watched people’s reaction as they come into the classroom. Literally, everyone that came in had either a confused, amazed or amused expression. Especially Ivan and Rendolm, my band mates; had very interesting reactions. When Ivan heard the song, he was very fascinated and started to rant about the whistle sounds in the music. Rendolm on the other hand was happily “outraged” about the funny percussion. Then, when I told them that this strange music that I was playing is the song that started House music. Their expressions were irreplaceable. Do you like listening to Zedd? Calvin Harris? David Guetta? Hardwell? Deadmau5? Dyro? Or Dannic? Without Acid house, those wonderful music producers won’t exist, without acid house, awesome house genres like deep house, progressive house, electro house, big room, bounce, complextro, Tech house, hardcore, future house, garage house, or Moombahton will not exist. So thank you Acid house, thank you Roland TB-303 electronic synthesizer for inspiring the creation of Acid House.

What to bring with you for Hibernation Yash Nair E9L

It’s been a year since you did it, and now it’s time to do it again. Hibernation. So, before you go for you months-long siesta, here’s how to stay one snooze ahead of other hibernators. Do be aware that hibernating is an extremely risky business.

Bring with you:

√ All the pillows from IKEA.√ AlltheblanketsfromthePalaceofVersailles.√ A board full of sheep. (if possible, change your wallpaper to that).√ Sound-isolation headphones.√ Aking-sizedbed.(Ortwo.OrThree…)√ A ton of sound padding.

Note: The following items are not intended for use (at least while sleeping) by mere mortals. Some exceptions include but are not limited to: telekinesis, the ability to sleep with your eyes open, and the ability to multitask whilst sleeping.

√ An earthquake-inducing machine√ A team of Ghostbusters to ‘de-ghost’ your haunted house.√ Now that people actually want to go in the house, get a marching band, a walking band and a running band (the kind that plays music, not the ones you wear) to play for you. That’ll wake you up for sure. Unless you’re still wearing the sound-isolation headphones, that is.√ Buy a piece of railway track next to your bed, and get an old train to run across the tracks.√ Buy all of the alarm clocks in IKEA. Set near ear.pictures of you to put in your sleeping-journal.

√ A haunted house (this ensures that you have no disturbances while sleeping)√ A huge invisibility cloak (large enough to cover said haunted house) √ A moat (doesn’t need to be filled up by water, mud would do fine) around the haunted house√ A selfie-stick hanging above your bed that automatically takes pictures of you to put in your sleeping-journal.

Injuries or causalities caused by attempting to replicate the methods given are your own responsibility.

It’s all very well that you’re finally sleeping. However, that itself is barely half the battle. Waking up can prove a challenge to many first-time hibernators, so these following items can assist in waking you up.

Report on manoeuvrability of Human Hibernations

Rebecca Wang DP1WAim:

Investigate whether it is possible for human to hibernate and what should we be careful about when hibernate.

Hypothesis:

Human is capable of hibernating and steps such as eat more and digest less should be taken before going to hibernation.

Method:

1.Findtenhumanbeings2.Givethem6kgof foodeveryday foramonth and force them to eat all3.Puttheminasmallroomwithaheartrate monitor attached to them4.Leave them in that room untouched for a month5. Record the heart rate with a computer6. Open the door and see who is still alive7. Observe their heart rate

Analysis:

Threeoutoftenpassedoutattheday2,day4andday5.Theyweredraggedoutofthe room. Don’t worry about them, they are stillalive.Onetester’sheartratewas50;we thought he couldn’t wake up. Luckily he waked up three days later, looking nothing but just a bit paler. The rest just got skinner and says hibernation fells like heaven.(Couldhavebeenasideeffectoflight sleeping status and slow heart rate)

Conclusion:

My hypothesis was right. Human beings to have potential to control heart rate and preform hibernation. Although it is possible, there is just no reason for human to hibernate. Imagine this: winter come, you goes to hibernate while your fellow classmate or co-workers keeps on studying or working and when you wake up, you are far behind them. Human invented air conditioner and heaters and warm bed and warm cloth to help us survive against the harsh weather during winter. We could fight the coldness simply by adding another layer of coat, why bother gathering food for a month and go hibernate?

If I were a bearJessica Chien DP2H

If I were a bear I’d curl in wait, Forthefoolishtwolegs, sofilledwithhate,That they would walk, calm and unhurried, With their axes and guns and saw unburied,And cart away my home unwearied.

If I were a bear I would stand tall,Catchingmypreywithtoothandclaw,Relishing and digging into my meal,Pawingthesoftearthwithmyheel,And to no one in the forest kneel.

If I were a bear I would be king,With scepter in hand and handful of rings,And with all my might,I’d stand with height,And protect my people with all my pride.

But because I’m a bear, a sleepy creature,Built furry and warm and cuddly in structure,Should winter come,To the cold I would succumb,And lie down to sleep with a gentle murmur and hum.

Oh,ifonlyIcouldbeabear,Andhibernatethroughthewinter…

THE DANGERS 0F N0T HIBERNATING

Dorcas Ossuetta DP2H

Hibernating refers to a state of inactivity and metabolic depression; it is also a standby state, which conserves power without los-ing the contents of memory. In other words, sleep. Sleeping is generally a good thing for humans, it allows our body systems to expe- rience rest for a brief period of time, and it helps to improve our memory as we tend to perform better after sleep, and a moderate amount also improves our life quality as too much or too little sleep could shorten our life span and so on. The benefits of sleep are end- less and this is why we are advised to sleep for not less than six hours a day. However, there are some people who have de- veloped an inabil ity to sleep; such people are most l iable to develop insomnia, which is a sleeping disorder that is known for its symp- toms of unrest and inability to sleep. There are certain signs that indicate that a personis sleep deprived, they include: always being hungry, scientists say that if the brain is not getting the energy it needs from sleep, it will often try to get it from food. As food con- sumption increases coupled with a slowdown of metabolism, you start to gain weight. You start to experience more anger, sadness and fear as time goes on and you also become less cognitive but more impulsive. H a v i n g t h e s e s y m p t o m s i s bad enough; ta lk more of the actual impacts and dangers of lacking sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems; i t puts a person ata risk for several diseases such as heart dis- ease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes from the increase in food intake and the slowdown of metabolism, irregular

heartbeat, and the list goes on. Lack of sleep ages your skin; it causes it to be sallow and your eyes to be puffy aftera few nights of missed sleep. It leads to the formation of bags and dark circles underneath the eyes, a joke from a TV show says that ‘a continuation of sleep deprivation could lead to having, not just bags, but luggage underneath the eyes’. As a learner and student, this next impact is very crucial to our ability to learn. Sleep deprivation makes a person forgetful! Scientists have proven that during the hours of sleep, our brain transfers learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain where long term memories are stored. Sleep loss also impairs judgment and ironically it can impair judgment about sleep. This means that a person who is experiencing sleep deprivation will be unable to realize or assess what lack of sleep is doing to them. Dr. Geh- rman from webMD says “Studies show that over time, people who are getting six hours of sleep, instead of seven or eight, begin to feel that they’ve adapted to that sleep depri- vation -- they’ve gotten used to it, but if you look at how they actually do on tests of mental alertness and performance, they continue to go downhill. So there’s a point in sleep deprivation when we lose touch with how impaired we are.”

This should be a warning sign to those who think that sleep deprivation i s a c c e p t - a b l e o r t h a t t h e y h a v e a d a p t e d t o t h e l i f e s t y l e o f h a v i n g less s leep than necessary. In the short run i t might seem al l r ight but i n t h e l o n g r u n i t h a s g re a t i m p a c t b o t h p hys i c a l ly a n d a c a d e m i c a l ly.A final word of advice: Despite our need to make achievements, we should not forget the things that are real ly important , most ly our health . For what is the gain of success if you have poor health and cannot enjoy it?

One day try on hibernatingPenelope Zhang E8JJacob shivered. He half wished that he hadn’t thought up such a ludicrous adventure as he curled up in his sleeping bag. The mist of the early morning scattered as the gigantic fireball rose swiftly and nonchalantly fromeverywhere but nowhere. This might’ve been a normal morning at the Arctic but it seemed like hell to the still trembling Jacob. Seeing that his companion was still asleep, Jacob quietly crawled out of his “shell”, put on his clumsy winter boots and mittens, straightened his slightly wrinkled winter coat inside his parka, took a deep shudder-ing breath as if he had never been so ner-vous before and sprinted out of the tent. Freezing. It was the only word that Jacob was able to muster after his second audacious move. He had absolutely no hope of findingplaces to siton since thegroundis covered with nothing but snow and ice. He stood there, gazing at the horizon as he rubbed his hands back and forth, momen-tarily puffing hot breath into his cuppedhands. Jacob had not been that cold through all his life and he didn’t dare to think how much temperature would drop during night-time.ItwasJacob’sideaatfirsttostayintheArctic for two days, he had studied about the Arctic back when he was still at university. The arctic sucked away all the other appeal-ing places in his mind as he willingly fell un-der its irresistible spell with no effort at all to break away. He came up with a crazy thought of human hibernation and told his friend Nickwho… “Dude, you’re up early.” It was Nick, he walked out of the tent with his eyes still closed as if still in a dream, if Nick hadn’t done this before a million times, Jacob would be slightly worried that he might fell down. Nick groaned unpleasantly as he ad-vanced to the place where Jacob was standing.

“Imean, thisissofreakingcold!Oh,Jake why did you come up with this idea?” “Ah, come on Nick! We can stay in our tent the whole day, it might be fun,”Even as he says this, he real-ized that his voice had become less stable by every passing second. They spent the rest of the day ly-ing in the tent just like hibernating ani-mals do; they seldom speak to one an-other to save strength. It was all Jacob’s idea, thought Nick as his stomach rum-bled again and again. Jacob had said that they should quit eating for one day just like animals do, although Nick protested, he couldn’t persuade a person like Jacob to change his thoughts. They sometimes just stare right at the top of the tent with-out saying anything as if daydreaming. The night came as quickly as dawn did; the moon was as bright as ever as they scrambled once more into their shells. Before they fell asleep, Jacob whispered hesitantly to Nick in total darkness, “Nick, we experienced a whole day of hiber-nating with nothing to do and absolute cold-ness, we almost achieved what animals did.” “What do you mean by almost?” Nick retorted. Even though the completely black abyss swallowed them, Jacob was able to picture nick’s scowling look. “I mean, the animals hibernate in a place with no shelter -- they often hibernate outside. Squirrels often hibernate in… ”. “So your third great idea is that we should go out and crawl in the snow or we hang ourselves upside down on the tree like bats do? There goes your death wish again!” Jacob hesitated, this might be even harder then he pictured before. “I was thinking that we

Page 15: DECEMBER 2015 · 12/12/2015  · 2 3 3. Pancakes & Milk Making pancakes doesn’t acquire much time, and yet the taste can be diverse by simply adding different syrups on the top

tent’s door ajar.” Completesilencefollowedasuneasinessslow-ly crept into Jacob’s body. His heart was pound-ing really fast but he managed to get the last few sentences out before he change his mind. “I mean, we tried one day of hibernat-ing out in the cold already, I am just suggest-ing that we could you know, make it one whole day and night. This is an adventure after all right?Wehavetoaccomplishtheimpossib…” The movement of the quilt cut him off; he could feel Nick squirming uncomfort-ably next to him. Then Nick coughed and said quietly but dangerously before he rolled over. “Jacob, you know that when ani-mals hibernate, their body becomes numb, right? So unless you have a death wish, I don’t think you should open that door.” “Butwhatdoyou…” “You’re asking for my opinion. Fine, I willgiveyoutwowords.NOWAY.”
